Time for the kids to go back to school already? The end of summer always makes me realize how fast time flies. It seems like school just ended for the summer, and here we are, getting ready to start the whole thing all over again. This is definitely not my favorite time of year. I never have enough time to get my kids fully ready for school. There is always at least one type of notebook I forget to pick up, or a bus slip that I can’t find. I might not have all pieces in place, but in the clothing department, I’m usually ahead of the game. I have a secret obsession with kids clothes. I love them. I love outfits. I love organizing clothes. I even like the way they smell when they come out of the many bins I have stashed in my attic. As I start my yearly back-to-school ritual of merging old clothes with new clothes and weeding out shoes that no longer fit anyone in the house, I quickly become overwhelmed with the task. With 3 growing kids I’ve got stacks of bins all very carefully labeled by season and size in hope of recycling the outfits that didn’t give-out during their first incarnation of school life. Although I painstakingly attempt to keep all my bins and boxes in line, organized, and ready to go, inevitably, each year I find a bunch of hand-me-downs that were outgrown before they were ever unpacked. Sad! Kids grow up too fast. So even if I sometimes complain, my hand-me-down management method isn’t just an economical way to keep my kids closets packed without breaking the bank, it’s also an excuse to take some time to think about each child and how small they were just a short time ago.. and just how much they’ve grown and will grow. I know that I’m a little nuts when it comes to my kids’ old clothes, but in a blink of an eye, a flip of a calendar page, each moment, each bin, each outgrown sandal, are all pieces of childhoods I never want to forget.

So, let’s face it… September is here and although that means Back to School it doesn’t necessarily have to mean that summer is behind us. As you can probably imagine, I’m one of those Jersey Shore residents that likes to squeeze every last day out of summer and regardless of what the calendar says, I believe that summer extends into mid-October. Let’s call it “late-summer.” Late summer at the Jersey Shore is one of the true rewards of living here. As you fellow locals know, late summer has significantly less crowded beaches and roadways, great deals from local family friendly businesses and awesome weather. You’ll be busier now with late summer responsibilities like homework and sports but there’s still time to maximize life at the Jersey Shore. Get out and enjoy it! We had a blast creating this issue for you. Be sure to check out some of the great school fashions from Atlantic City Outlets – The Walk starting on pages 8 and 9. I’d like to thank our family and friends that gave generously of their time to help us get that feature together and a special thank you to Kim Butler and Cristin Bentz from The Walk on making the photo shoot easy and seamless. I’d also like to thank photographer Larry Berman for helping us turn our everyday kinds into fashion models. There’s a great article from Georgie Wood on understanding your child’s learning needs on page 20. Reading The Signs How to know when your child is having difficulty reading “Why am I so dumb, Mommy?” That was the question that drove one local mother (who we’ll call “Michelle”) into action. Throughout kindergarten and first grade, Michelle’s daughter, Britney, was a happy and easygoing child. She enjoyed her friends and looked forward to school each day. She loved reading books about animals. “Things started to change about five or six weeks into second grade,” said Michelle. “She had tummy problems and headaches when it was time to board the bus.” Additionally, she noticed that Britney no longer came home full of news of her day, both social and educational. “I requested a meeting with her teacher and asked appropriate questions,” stated Michelle. Her teacher assured me that Britney was doing fine and that all children do not learn at the same rate. “I continued to try to help her by getting her books that were appropriate for the second grade…to my amazement, she was only reading common words, but could not sound out an unfamiliar word.” Michelle asked that the Child Study Team evaluate Britney, and by the end of second grade, it was clear that her daughter was not reading on grade level. So, at the beginning of third grade, her daughter was to receive extra help. “I did not know what to do, so I accepted what was offered by her school,” said Michelle. Why does this happen? What should a parent do to keep this from happening? We asked Mrs. Georgiana Wood, a retired special education teacher of 25 years who now works as an educational consultant to school systems while maintaining a private tutoring service in her office for 12 children a week, ages 6 through 17.

“First of all, let’s not play the blame game,” states Wood. “Teachers and administrators want to help your children. Increasing class sizes, no paraprofessional staff, and dwindling school budgets present challenges to the classroom teacher,” she adds. “But, I also understand that knowing this does not help your child to read. Parents should be assured that the majority of children learn to read with no problems. For most, the reading programs that the schools utilize are sound and research-based.” A few children, however, do not learn to read like their peers. Mrs. Wood advises that your child may need extra help if he or she exhibits the following signs: • Slow to speak as a baby • Has a very limited vocabulary — cannot answer in sentences • Does not like school • Asks you to do his or her work for them • Spells with no sense of phonics (can’t sound out the sounds of the letters)

• Misreading the letters b, d, p, q (This may just be a maturity issue, but if it persists, it needs to be addressed.) • Does not like to read anything • Does not sound out unfamiliar words or does not have word-attack skills Mrs. Wood explains that some children are excellent at memorizing what educators call “sight words.” These are the most commonly used words, such as the, because, said, etc. Most reading texts in the early grades are written with many of these words. A struggling child who is a good listener and has memorized many of these words will go unnoticed until the first achievement tests are given at the end of second or third grade or when they are asked to read social studies or science texts on their own. Most of all reading in the primary grades is done together as a group. “Today, most children can read by the end of first or second grade,” says Georgiana. “If it is in your budget, have your child tutored in the summer after kindergarten if he or she does not know the letter sounds, and after first grade if he or she cannot read most one-syllable words. If the problem still exists atthe beginning of second grade, ask the school for help. Remember, little holes in reading eventually will cause the misreading of words and eventually comprehension problems.” In extreme cases where the child has a reading disability and has been evaluated by the Child Study Team, a special reading program should be used. They are special because these programs are multi-modal, meaning that they use the child’s sense of hearing, sight, and feeling: they are hands-on. Mrs. Wood likes to use three different programs in her office: Project Read, by Language Circle, for the little ones who have an average or above-average IQ; Wilson Reading Program, by Barbara Wilson, for the third-grade-and-up students with an average or aboveaverage IQ; and for any student with a

below-average IQ, she uses The Stevenson Language Skills Program, by Nancy and Bill Stevenson. The Stevenson program teaches a child how to read without all the phonics rules. It is very visual and has been successful with even the most severe reading challenges. These are her personal choices, but Georgiana acknowledges that there are many more programs available to teachers. “Just make sure that you do not keep giving a child more of the same program that has been unsuccessful. Parents cannot choose what reading program the school uses with his or her child, but they can ask for a change of program if progress is not being made. The program used should match the child’s learning profile.” This discussion would take place at a Child Study Team meeting. Georgiana is currently employed by school systems to provide continuing educational workshops for teachers. She also does private tutoring in her office in Manasquan. Soon millions of teary-eyed parents will send their wide-eyed teens off to college for the first time. As the car pulls away, parents reflect with nostalgia as their children embark on the next adventure in their lives. Preparing college-bound teens for life away from home can be an anxious and task-filled time. While many parents will be teaching and reminding their teens about diet, laundry and personal safety, they too frequently forget the important subject of car care and repairs before sending their teen and vehicle off to college. Because the teen’s vehicle is usually maintained by someone else while they are living at home, many college students neglect basic points of car care needed to keep both the student and car safe. Before students start heading off to dorm rooms across the nation AAA encourages parents to review four main areas about properly maintaining a vehicle and preparing for the unexpected Check and Maintain Tires: • Make sure young drivers have a tire pressure gauge in their vehicle, know where it is and how to use it. Maintenance: • Regularly scheduled maintenance on a vehicle • Make sure the owner’s manual is in the glove box of the vehicle. • Point out the current mileage of the car and at what mileage mark it’s time to perform maintenance again

Help teens identify an auto repair shop they can trust near their school in case an unexpected repair is needed. If unfamiliar with the area around the college, look for a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility. As a free public service for all motorists, AAA inspects auto repair shops around the country and only approves those that meet and continually maintain high professional standards for equipment, customer service, cleanliness and training.
Prepare for Roadside Emergencies: • Make sure the teen’s vehicle has a well-stocked roadside emergency kit including: flashlight, extra batteries, jumper cables, first-aid kit, bottled water, rags or paper towels, tire pressure gauge, blanket, screwdriver, adjustable wrench, and pliers. • In addition to making sure the spare tire is in good condition and properly inflated, be sure the vehicle has a working jack and tire iron. With so many new challenges rising before their children often parents are overwhelmed with fear for their child’s safety. Even the most prepared, experienced and informed driver can have car trouble. For many parents these fears are compounded by the fact that their teen will be driving their cars miles away from home without the safety-net of parental help just a phone call away.
