Historic Smithville has been the home of The Wild Bird Store for over 12 years. In March of 2008 the store took on a new twist when Cheryl and Harvey Carr took over and re-opened the business as Gabby's For The Birds. This husband and wife team have a true love of nature and the environment and have created a store full of amazing, quality products for Wild Back Yard Birds.

BIRDS
Most of the items in the store come from recycled materials. Their glass hummingbird feeders are made from hand blown Eco-Glass. They have bird houses made of recycled wood, juice cans, and even recycled plastic containers! Some of these exquisite birdhouses are made from old cans and thick sturdy wood from a 100 year old barn! Talk about going green! The inventory is amazing and “If we don’t have it, we’ll find it for you,” says owner, Cheryl Carr. “We have gift certificates
Recycling is for The BIRDS

Jack Jones always loved wood working, and when he retired in 2000, he had the time to make custom furniture for his family. The amount of leftover wood amazed him. He didn't want to waste nice materials so he kept the wood. He figured that one day there would be a way to use it. That day came when his church's youth group was trying to find a creative project for their Christmas bizarre. Jack had the idea to create bird house building kits from the scrap wood. The kids built, painted and ultimately sold 40 bird houses at the bizarre! After that, people started approaching Jack asking for him to make them bird houses. That's when "J J Woodcrafts" started making bird houses from recycled materials. Since that Christmas bizarre he has bought and salvaged everything from dinning room table leaves to 100 year old barns!! About 90-95% of each house is entirely recycled. Jack 12
goes to auctions and answers classified ads in his quest for old materials. His houses are made from some of the finest woods including cherry, mahogany, douglas fir, oak and cedar. Most of the wood is 50 to 100 years old and is weathered or distressed with variations of grain, knots and wear. Each house is as unique as the wood used to make it. When you talk to Jack, you find out how much he loves every aspect of building these little treasures. You will find him at auctions and yard sales looking for things like old furniture. When new opportunities to find old materials arise; Jack is there. Jack spends hours in his shop creating new designs and researching birds to learn as much as he can about them and their living habits. Jack takes pride in his work. You can see that each piece is made with care and creativity. His beautiful houses are on sale at Gabby's for the Birds in Historic Smithville.

Keep Your Eyes Where They Belong by sage lauren sinopoli
Across America inventors tinker in their garages creating devices with the potential to change the way we live. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak are perfect examples. (Thanks to Apple Computers the personal computer is the norm across the country.) Northfield’s own Joel Caplin is one of those inventors. He has tackled the problem with the personal computers' cousins, the laptops. People who always use laptops experience back and neck pain. Joel's invention, The Eyeriser, eases the pain. Joel invented The Eyeriser out of necessity in 2004 when he started graduate school. He needed something to make researching and writing less of a strain on his body. He also wanted something prettier than a pile of books, and he found the stands at the store to be bulky and overpriced. Joel needed a light weight, portable and affordable stand to keep his "laptop off of his lap."
The first prototype of The Eyeriser was made of cardboard and duct tape and lasted Joel four years. They have come a long way since then. Now, there is a space to hold your documents as well as the computer. While developing the best product possible, Joel meticulously measured the angles and thickness of laptops on display in stores. He consulted health care professionals to make sure they were ergonomically correct, and it is endorsed by chiropractors and physical therapists. Each one is made of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. He still makes them by hand in his garage to ensure that each one is made with care to ensure quality. The best thing is at the end of the day, you can fold up your laptop and Eyeriser, pack up and be on your way. For more information about The Eyeriser visit www.eyeriser.com.

Attack of the Toxic Leaking Televisions
The Digital Transition from analogue in TV was the hot topic on the 6:00 news. There is another vital issue that needs to be addressed in regard to your old TVs. One old TV can contain 3 to 9 pounds of lead, which will leak into the ecosystem. This is called E-waste, which is pollution caused by the improper disposal of electronics. If you are planning on getting a new TV with a digital receiver, make sure you find a way to recycle your old analogue TV. You can donate it to a Good Will, make an appointment with your county’s recycling agency, or you can visit earth911.com.

Fit Clothes, Tight Budget
How to buy the clothes you like, at the right price by janelle hammond
My favorite clothing brands are Guess, XOXO, New York & Company, Express, Banana Republic, and Calvin Klein. I also never buy an article of clothing for more than $20. You’re probably thinking - A) I’m a liar or B) sure, but you don’t buy clothes from those designers at that price. Didn’t your mother ever teach you about people who assume? I almost exclusively buy clothing from the stores and companies previously mentioned, and I do manage to buy my items for approximately $20 (and usually less.) Here are the secrets about how to do this! 1. Shop at consignment stores - I always start at these stores to find great buys. On average, the most expensive arti-
16
cle of clothing may be a dress, but I’ve never seen anything priced at more than $20. I’ve bought an XOXO blazer for $5 and a Banana Republic dress for $7 at a local consignment shop. Note: There is a difference between “thrift,” “consignment,” and “vintage” shops. Vintage shops tend to mark-up clothing, much more than a thrift or consignment shop, based on the clothing’s appeal and label. Consignment and thrift shops sell all the clothes in a category for the same price. Also, if you set up an account with a consignment shop, you can sell some of your clothes to them, and generally earn a percentage of the profit. Sometimes you get it in the form of

Consignment and thrift shops sell all the clothes in a category for the same price. money, other times it has to be used in the store. Either way, it's more money for shopping! 2. Shop at outlet stores - Guess, Banana Republic, and Calvin Klein all have outlet stores. The clothes sold at them are just as fashion-forward and well made as the regular stores, and the prices are significantly lower. Why pay more for the label, when another store has the same label for less! 3. Shop the discount rack/clearances Express has sales, usually quarterly, where they place boxes of merchandise in the front of their store with labels “$5,” “$10,” and “$20.” Hit them at the right time and you’ll find a gold mine of new tops and skirts that are perfect additions to your wardrobe. Every time I’m in New York & Company, I always make a beeline for the discount rack. Sometimes the items have been moved there because all the skirts in a certain size have sold out, so I check for mine. It’s also important to buy clothes that fit your personality and style, rather than what’s “fashionable.” You’ll want to get rid of those neon purple Kanye West-styled sunglasses in a year, or possibly less. A little black dress is always in style. The most important rule is to try everything on before you leave the store! Dressing rooms are there for a reason. If something doesn’t fit properly, don’t spend money on it. It’s not worth it to buy clothes you just won’t wear, especially since most of these items are non returnable. Make your cash count, and look stylish doing it! www.FREEstuffNJ.com

You Can’t Live Without It...
by sage lauren sinopoli
Quality is a word that seems to be thrown around a lot these days. Every car commercial we hear spouts chants of high quality automobiles. And, we expect it from high end retailers like the shops on The Walk in Atlantic City. Rarely do we sit and think about the quality of the simple necessities. Resources taken for granted. Last year the Associated Press released a study that showed various pharmaceutical drugs found in drinking water in the area. There are reports from both the EPA and The Department of Homeland Security citing indoor air quality as potential threat to health. The scientific evidence of pollution and contaminants entering the home is overwhelming. There is something that can be done to protect your
20
family. Actually, it is being done by caring businesses in your own backyard. When a small group of business people meet with one another to work toward better business extraordinary things happen. Every Tuesday morning the Atlantic City Chapter of Business Networking International, also known as BNI, meets to help one another build their businesses. Members of BNI take an oath to be upstanding and honest in every business endeavor. Each member works toward excellence. It was at one of these early morning meetings that Dennis Schott of Culligan and Andy Parker of AireServ began to collaborate. Culligan has been purifying American drinking water since the 1930s, and remains a leader in the industry. AireServ is a unique business and Andy is not your average heating and

air conditioning man. He is actually a home comfort specialist. Andy can install a machine to collect information on air quality in your home and he'll make recommendations to make your home more comfortable and toxin free. He also offers several different types of heating and cooling systems, which run 95% efficient. That’s right, Culligan and AireServ are in the business of making your home environment healthier and more comfortable. Think about it . . . we all need to air and water to live. So, Dennis and Andy are actually working hard everyday to improve the quality of life in South Jersey. Thanks guys!
2. Reverse Osmosis filtrations systems, like the ones sold by Culligan, provides a convenient, smart way to ensure your family is receiving the fresh, clear water they require.
3. Imagine a water bottle filled a quarter of the way up with oil. That's about how much oil was needed to produce the bottle. 4. 8 out of 10 water bottles bought by Americans end up in landfills... That's 22 billion water bottles out of 25 billion!
5. Along with plastic bags, plastic bottles are one of the most prevalent sources of pollution found on our beaches.
6. Bottled water may leach DEHA, a known carcinogen, into your water if you re-fill the bottle.
7. Each day, millions of Americans turn on their taps and get water that exceeds the legal limits for dangerous contaminants. 8. The 22 billion water bottles sent to landfills each year will never biodegrade. They will break down into small toxic bits and will contaminate our waterways. 9. Americans spend $7 billion on water bottles every year! 10. By the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has lost over 1% of its total water amount

A Breath of
Fresh
Aire
by sage lauren sinopoli
Andy Parker and his family were just like yours. Loving, hardworking, and living day by day. His dad was in and out of the doctor’s office while he fought with emphysema and asthma. The Parkers followed the doctors advice, and his dad continued to take up to four medications at a time for relief. As dialogue between the doctors and the Parkers continued, Andy noticed a trend. “The doctors would always wonder if he was allergic to different things,” Andy explained. But, no one offered a way to test the Parker residence to get to the root of the problem. That’s when Andy first found out about AireServ, a heating and air conditioning company different from the rest. AireServ uses equipment by AirAdvice, manufactures of the most trusted air quality equipment in the country. The company even addressed Congress in 2007 in the, AirAdvice State of Our Indoor Air Report. After Andy’s dad’s home was evaluated the technicians suggested that they use a filtration system. Using filtration and ventilation systems are effective ways to clean the air your breathe inside of your home. After installing the filtration system, Andy’s dad started to breathe easier. He still needs to take medication to help him breathe, but thanks to 22
AireAdvice he has been able to cut back on daily medication. Andy saw first-hand how improved air quality changes quality of life. After his dad’s condition improved, Andy set out on a mission to improve his friends’ and neighbors’ quality of life by purifying the air they breathe. “Doctors are great! Still, sometimes we all overlook the source of the problem. That’s where we come in,” says Andy. He and his team can install a machine to collect information like temperature, humidity, particle allergens, VOC (“volatile organic compounds,” detectable chemical pollutants), CO and CO2. After data is collected and anylized, recommendations for the individual home are made. Your family is probably also affected by indoor impurities, remember even though you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not effecting you.

In the mid-70’s, she visited a holistic practitioner in Pennsylvania, which transformed her thinking and enabled her to realize that each of our lives, as well as our health, is the sum total of the choices and decisions we make. It took decades of research and practice for her to develop a wellrounded and practical approach to a lifestyle of wellness. That led to her passion of helping people to make educated nutritional and environmental lifestyle choices for wellness in their lives and homes. The following is a question and answer session with her.
With a brief review of these sites, you will quickly find out that these are serious concerns that shouldn’t be ignored.

It’s Raining Fuel… Sort of
A local New Jersey man continues to develop an environmentally friendly, mileage increasing engine by gina caciolo
Gas prices refuse to settle at one price and, if anything, continually rise and rise. Nobody is happy about it. Other than buying a new Prius, it feels like there aren’t a lot of options. Well… now there are. James Keene started studying Hydrogen Generators and Eco-mizers about a year and a half ago. He read up on it and began understanding all the technicalities for the first six months, and then he tried it out on his Ford E50. “I went from 9 mpg to 15 mpg,” Keene shares. “After creating a fuel additive, it went from 15 mpg to 22.” Keene’s website, Fueled With Water, gives a very long list of the immediate benefits of this invention. Primarily, because of the use of water, water vapor is created, keeping the engine at a cooler temperature, which maintains the life of the engine. It helps improve gas mileage, enhances the octane of the mixture. And, by using this method you might be eligible for a tax credit. Each and every way it helps your car and helps your wallet. Better gas mileage and enhanced octane means fueling up less often and a tax credit always saves some green. Into keeping the world a little greener? This is the engine for you. “The hydrogen also helps in the removal and reduction of carbon deposits, an environmental plus,” the website reports. How about emissions? This ‘green machine’ has much 26
lower overall emissions, helping keep the environment a little less polluted. So, how does it work? The invention breaks water into it’s basic elements: hydrogen and oxygen. Next, the hydrogen is induced into the combustion chamber. This mixes with the gas and improves octane value, which gives it a cleaner more powerful burn. It releases hydrocarbons and the exhaust is actually water. You’re probably thinking, “Ok… but this costs an arm and a leg, doesn’t it?” No no no no no no no no no. One more time: No. “I’m writing a book about how to make it,” Keene states. “It’ll be inexpensively priced, and people can make it themselves for about $100.” Keene will build it for you for about $600. “But I’m looking to get out of that business,” he said. “I figure the $500 or so difference is a nice incentive.” In this economy, of course it is! Keene’s development of this creation saves consumers money in so many ways. An increase in miles per gallon means having to fill up your tank less often. If you like wasting your money at every moment, this isn’t for you. But you probably wouldn’t be reading this either. For everyone else out there, start taking care of your car and your wallet and check out Keen’s invention For more information please visit Keene’s website: www.fueledwithwater.com

th i w e l Recyc
Taking a closer look at local Freecycle.org groups by nicole mayweather
Do you have a bunch of junk just laying around your house? Do you ever think: “Why did I ever think I’d need all of this?” “We’re such a consumer oriented society,” says Dee Kramer, moderator of Margate’s Freecycle.org. “People don’t even think about how the stuff we have lying around could fill someone’s needs.” As the owner of Weichert Realtors Sea-
28
gate in Margate, and a Realtor herself, Dee sees homes filled with tons of ‘stuff.’ She once sold a fully furnished home and the new owner didn’t want anything in the house. What did Dee do? She put every single item on Freecycle.org. “I remember a single mom with 3 kids. Her children had been sleeping on the floor, and she took the beds,” Dee shares. “And I remember a woman who ran a youth home in Atlantic County and didn't have any chairs for the outside space, so she took the lawn chairs.”

Freecycle.org is genuinely about giving back. The moderators stand behind the organization’s motto of “Keeping stuff out of landfills.” OC’s group has over 1,600 members and was created in August 9, 2005. Mays Landing’s group falls just shy of 1,900 members and is about a year younger than OC’s group. Dee joined OCs Freecycle.org first and then attempted to join EHT. Her membership was denied because she wasn’t an EHT resident. But when one door closes another opens, so she applied to start Margate’s Freecycle.org as a result. Sometimes, the strangest things can are offered or requested on the site, truly showing that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. “The strangest thing I have offered is a bunch of out dated and freezer burned meat,” Ali, the Mays Landing moderator shares. “It was taken by a gentleman who used it to make food for rescued dogs.”
www.FREEstuffNJ.com
What about the bad items? “There are no “worst” items,” Ali shares. “It doesn't matter what is offered, most often someone can use it. It's all about recycling at the grass-roots level.” You can offer items and you can ask for items you need. This keeps the website community and environmentally driven. Next time you have a pile of stuff you’d normally just throw away… DON’T! C’mon, help keep stuff out of landfills! Please visit Freecycle.org and look for a local group. On a strictly local level, FREEstuffNJ.com is a new eco-friendly site offering Free Stuff from local businesses who pledge to give away items that may or may not otherwise go to waste in hopes that it may encourage commerce and help jump start the local economy... so check it out and LIVE and SAVE GREEN!

Going Green Since by sage lauren sinopoli
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, aluminum foil and closures accounted for 400,000 tons of our nation’s municipal solid waste stream. Only 10% of that was recovered or recycled, leaving 360,000 tons of waste in the landfills. Add to that, 2 million tons of plastic wrap and over 1.5 tons of plastic bags—each year. Since 1946, Tupperware has been producing lifetimes of safe reusable products. Tupperware is the original green brand. When Earl Tupper invented his first Wonderlier® Bowl and Bell Tumbler sets he became a pioneer without even knowing it. He invented a sustainable, safe product that he believe in so much that he put a lifetime guarantee on his products. If your Tupperware cracks, chips or peels Tupperware will replace it for you . . . FREE of charge. Long before anyone even whispered about toxins in plastics 30
1949
Tupperware had found a way to remove them from their products. Today, Tupperware is greener then ever. The company continues to research and test products to make sure that you're family is safe from harmful toxins. Tupperware has always kept food fresher longer, which keeps food in your house and tummy and out of landfills. Not to mention saving you those extra trips to the food store! It is one of the few plastics safe to reuse time and time again. They offer products to help save energy and back up each one of their products with research and confidence. You can keep aluminum foil, plastic wrap and sandwich bags out of landfills, while keeping leeching chemicals out of your home. Tupperware isn't just for Mom any more. Now, it's for the savvy Earth and pocketbook conscious consumer.

Bring New Life To Everyday Items by janelle hammond
Redesign worn articles you use daily and make them new again People call me a bit of a pack rat, but it comes in handy more often than people think. Why should I waste money on new stuf when I can reuse things I already have and create new, different items. For example, I’m a wine lover and I love to sew. I collect my corks and glue a few together. My pin cushion is all set. Next, I dig through old t-shirts with pit stains or holes and find throw pillows with stuffing falling out. Make a few snips, add a little thread and I’ve got new pillows, adorned with pictures of my favorite bands and some catchy phrases. I might even head out to my garden and pick some longer stemmed flowers. I’ll rinse my wine bottle out thoroughly and give my flowers a spiffy, new home.
32
If I’m traveling, I might bring clothes that need to be hung and covered. Head to the kitchen and pull out those trash bags. Rip a tiny hole in the bottom and slide your hanger through. Ring a rubber band around the hanger heads and I’m all set for a long car trip without wrinkly clothes. When a glass or plate breaks, I’m bummed, but only for a moment. I try to arrange the pieces in a way where a mosaic could be made. Paint a little color, be careful of the sharp edges, and I’ve got a beautiful addition to that mirror in my hallway. Recycling may label you a hippy, but take the label with pride. Saving money by reusing items makes sense and cents, and David Byrnes will sure be happier for it!
