EVENTS EVENTS EVENTS What’s happening in Atlantic, Cumberland, and Cape May Counties
Thanks to the thousands that attended the 7th South Jersey Pumpkin Show festival held on October 9-10, hosted by the Atlantic County Fairground, S. Egg Harbor. Hundreds of sun soaked mums and pumpkins by the bins, greeted families from as far as New York, Florida, Ohio and Maryland. The weather was perfect and families stayed all day. Kathryn and Beau Wright, along with family members that traveled 547 miles from Ohio and flew in from Florida worked around the clock to make the show worth visiting. The Atlantic County Fair Association operated a food booth and received over $3,000 from the admission proceeds. Kathryn Wright, event creator, lost her 15 year old son back in May of this year from an ATV accident. Her son was an October child and his family celebrated his life quietly at the festival. The Gazette of Atlantic County held a coin toss and donated the collection to the Scott Bailey Trust. Proceeds of the Pumpkin Show will go toward a scholarship fund that will be setup this coming year in Scott’s memory. The organizers of the event want to thank the thousands that attended, the vendors, the sponsors and The Atlantic County Fair Association for your support.

Let’s Do Lunch! Comcast employees Eugene Cardona and Alex Gomez stop for lunch at Wheat Road Cold Cuts on Wheat Road in Vineland. “The food is good, service is quick, we come here all the time.”

Wheat Road Cold Cuts Looks can be deceiving. That’s exactly what you’ll discover at Wheat Road Cold Cuts, located on Wheat Road between Brewster and Central Ave., in Vineland. If you don’t slow down, you could pass right by in a blink because the hanging sign out front is so faded. Once you step inside, the on going renovations are obvious, but there is a reason for that. Paul Wroniuk, owner, and his staff are too busy fulfilling eat-in/ take-out orders for their patrons to focus on re-decorating. In addition, every day Paul and his staff prepare 400-600 meals for Meals on Wheels--feeding our senior residents-food service for 6 area Abbott district preschool programs, and Sunday Catering. The smell of coffee and fresh cold cuts, accompanied by warm sun beams shining onto the tiled floor at the entrance, gives off a neighborhood sandwich-shop feel. Behind the counter, smiling faces of long time employees Barbara Lombardo and Shannon Coulbourn as they wait on customers, is welcoming. Paul Wroniuk bought the place about 10 years ago and
runs it with an army of six staff members. When he was a kid his dad had a similar place in Camden, so Paul grew up knowing the business. As an adult, Paul initially went into a different profession and then realized it wasn’t what he wanted to do with his life. So, he bought Wheat Road Cold Cuts and never looked back. “I love it,” says Paul. “I start at 5:00am most mornings and don’t leave until closing. I work hard so my children have options in life. They don’t have to settle for that job they don’t like because they can’t find another way to make an income. They can come back here and always have something to do. I do it for them, my kids,” Paul said with a protective Dad-tone. Stop in and have lunch or call ahead and order take-out. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Full Menu: Breakfast sandwiches; subs& sandwiches; platters; salad; pasta; pizza; lunch-meats; wraps; strombolis; more Catering for all Occasions starting at $2.95 call Paul for details. —N. Piazza

Whip It Out! by Chef Amanda Nahas
It’s the Sport of Kings… Fall is my favorite time of year. I love everything about it, from the colors of nature, cooler nights, smells of fires in the fireplace, sports and oh yeah the food! I am a huge sports fan, and I love football. Speaking of sports, fall brings me the feeling of nostalgia for my cheerleading days. It’s not cheerleading I miss; it’s the fantasy I used to play out in my head while being on the sidelines. I used to picture myself in football uniform running in for touchdowns and tackling pre-pubescent boys, leaving them paralyzed with my hits. What can I say? I am a tomboy. I was bestowed with the nickname “Amanda the Moose” in sixth grade. I have since retired the title and know my place is on the couch watching, yelling at the television, and of course eating. The best part about watching men in tights become intertwined with each other is the food I get to eat while watching this display of Americana. Buffalo wings are on my top ten list of football food (I know, big surprise). Although I enjoy the traditional taste of Buffalo wings, sometimes I try to whip out something different. Since it is fall, and I love pumpkin, I was thinking about how I can incorporate more of it into my food. I said to myself, “hmmmm you love pumpkin, you love chicken wings, so how can you make a match out of these two?” So I came up with my newest creation; pumpkin chipotle chicken wings. The sweetness of the pumpkin coupled with the smoky spiciness of the chipotle pepper makes these wings irresistible. They are oral bliss and make you dance like you just scored the winning touchdown. The recipe is as follows: 2c all purpose flour ½ teaspoon each of salt and pepper Vegetable oil for frying 1, 15 ounce can of pumpkin 2 teaspoons of chipotle sauce (get La Morena, 7oz can chipotle in adobo sauce) 21/2 cups water 1 teaspoon each of cumin, salt, pepper, garlic 2 Tablespoons of honey 2 pounds of chicken wings, split at the joint, wingtips removed and discarded Preheat oven to 400 degrees F Combine the flour, salt and pepper in a large bowl, wisk together. In a large heavy bottomed pot, pour the oil to the depth of 2 inches. Place over medium heat and heat until a deep fry thermometer reads 375 degrees. Working

Classic Rapunzel Costume for Girls
Parent’s Picks Much has changed in the world of Halloween Costumes. Gone are the plastic masks and nylon one-piece pull-overs of the 70’s. Each year costumes become more elaborate and the selection continues to expand as more and more manufacturers join the ranks. Specialty stores like Spirit pop up each year like beautiful Halloween Flowers, and websites specializing in Halloween costumes are as popular as pumpkins this time of year. Check out some of the coolest new costumes for the season. Zak Reinhardt as Buzz, Age 5, Mizpah Maggie Reinhardt as Rapunzel, Age 3, Mizpah

Pretty as a princess... New this year, Rapunzel made popular by the movie Tangled tops the “Mom” list of favorites this year. Intricate details on bodice and lace-up ribbon add to the royal illusion.
Boys Deluxe Muscle Light-Up Iron Man Mark VI Costume New this year, the Iron Man armor suit has realistic details. Is easy on-easy off and built tough to stand up to all kinds of pre-trick-or-treat fun. The boys loved the extra padding in the Warm and fluffy, chest and this is one of the shoulders. most comfortable They puffed costume’s out themselves up there... Our girls couldn’t wait for their turn to dress-up. The dress is well made and durable, able to withstand multiple trick or treat nights. The girls loved the hair piece “crown,” but the smaller girls had a difficult time handling the weight. Sparkle light-up shoes and Light-Up wand make this costume extra special. Available online at DisneyStore.com or at Disney Stores located at The Hamilton Mall, The Walk, and Depford Mall
Light-Up Buzz Lightyear Costume for Boys This is, by far, the best Toy Story costume out there. So much better than previous versions. Thin but durable, great for Trick-or-treat or for a quick trip to Infinity and beyond. Flashing lights are always a plus. You can purchase the inflatable wings seperately, or go all out and buy the Buzz Lightyear Deluxe Action Wing Pack by Mattel - a highly recommended addition. Our kids played for hours. The wings motorized and actually go up and down. Kids feel like “real robots”.

Light-up Buzz Lightyear Goggles are a must with flashing lights and green tinted lenses. The goggles run a little small, so make sure your child tries on before you purchase.
Childs Light-Up Twinkler Fairy Costume A new twist on Tink! This balarina style dress actually has fiber optic twinkle lights built right in. We like this one because it stands out on dark trick or treat nights making it easy to keep an eye on your little fairy as she flits from house to house. skirt and wings.

The Local View by Mayor Chuck Chiarello
All politics is local I was recently asked to provide more of my personal views on issues facing local government and other topics as they come along. As House Speaker Tip O’Neill said: All politics is local. The front door to government is your local municipal building and your elected officials. There are changes in the air and significant challenges facing local governments. Unquestionably, we have entered into a new era of change in both how government is run and the public’s expectations of government. Many factors have brought about this change including the state of our national economy, increased pressure to reduce the size of government, and a somewhat bad image that government, in general, gets in the media. Local governments are facing an ever shrinking amount of financial support from our state government. I also find that state legislators are making more and more decisions on behalf of local government. Many times, decisions are made without our input or our blessing! Local government is still the first line of defense for our taxpayers and citizens to solve problems or voice their complaints. Since the most recent governor’s election, I have seen a trend of more citizens complaining about more issues. Those citizens want to pay less taxes and get more services or, at least, not lose any services. We are, however, heading to a point where local government may not be able to accomplish the full expectations of our taxpayers and residents. The expectations of our citizens have changed. Most believe their individual problem should be the number one priority of the municipality at that moment. The problem could be trash that was not picked up, a pothole, or a dog running loose in the neighborhood. Citizens want more from their local government than ever before. In fact, they are looking for “one stop shopping” whether their issues are on the local, school, county, state, or federal level of government. Since local municipalities generate the tax bills, citizens tend to come to us first. Many times, they are addressing issues that we can not help them with on the local level. Our municipality has always tried to help our residents get answers, even if they are out of our jurisdiction. Explaining to a resident that a problem can not be resolved by their town leads to a certain amount of dissatisfaction which we have little or no control over. Our school system is entirely independent of our local government. While we do work with the schools on a regular basis, the public expects us to have all the answers regarding their decisions and their budgets. With economic problems looming and some anti-government feelings circulating in New Jersey (and across the nation), I believe that people have become very cynical of government. There is a belief that everyone in government is in it for themselves. There is also a belief that other residents are getting a better deal than they are. It is our job as elected officials to try to change that mind set. I have always spoken very positively about the value of government. I have told our residents that they get a good value for their tax dollars in our community. Promoting the positive aspects of your town leads to a better understanding of what your government is doing and how it compares to other communities. In Buena Vista Township, we tell residents what their tax dollar is providing for them on the local level – roads, public works, parks, street lights, trash, recycling, snow removal, and so much more. In our town, 17 cents out of every dollar covers local services and 83 cents goes to the other layers of government – schools, county, health, library, open space, and fire districts in Buena Vista’s case.

Somehow, it became a harbinger of Food forfamily Thought daily routines. Oh My!
The Social Network 2: OMG! I hope there isn’t a sequel set in stone for The Social Network. The Social Network is based on the brainstorm and creation of Facebook (FB). I have the sequel in my head that has to be written. Working title right now would be “The Social Network 2: OMG.” To be clear, I haven’t seen the movie--but I am ready to write the screenplay to the sequel. Picture if you will, Mary the shut-in. She’s had a horrible morning. Last night’s storm has her alarm clock blinking and she’s going to be late for work. She stumbles down the hallway and slides through a mass of slimy gelatinous carpet mess left by sicky-wicky little Zach. Zach is not her son. He is a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier with weepy eye cancer and medicine that has made him pukey-wukey while Mary slumbered beneath her C-Pap machine. Zach is named after her favorite heart-throb, Zach Efron. You’re not shocked she has the High School Musical collection on Widescreen Blu-Ray HD DVD are you? I was not. Zach wouldn’t run her over if she was extra points in Death Race 2000! Is she my sister? No. Neighbor? No. Co-worker? No. How do I know so much about Mary? Because the dimwit blabs it ALL on her FB “Wall”! I thought Fox News was bad. Oh, but it gets better. Now every FB Twit jumps, er, I mean types to her rescue. Roxanne, the Percocet-addicted-nympho, tells Mary she’s “there for her” and will TTYL. Roxanne doesn’t actually know Mary, they’re not even in same state, but she’s only 2 or 3 friends removed, so they’re close. Then one of Rox’s friend, Keli, sees the post and adds to the crapfest. Keli rambles on about how her daughter shat herself in line at the Walmart Audio department once. 1st of all Walmart does not get to call the place they keep CENSORED CD’s and Reba McEntire Box Sets, an “Audio Department”! (No. NO! Get down, Bad dog.) Secondly, did I just write ‘shat’? Keli then posts Christ-Like wisdom and suggests how it may pertain to Mary’s pooch-puke filling her webbed toes. By this time I have jammed a fondue fork in my right eye to teach my left eye never to read Mary’s “FB wall page” before my Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Purple Koosh kicks in. It’s times like this I wish Al Gore didn’t invent the internet! Anyone who has been a victim of my FB post or comment rants, I would like to apologize now. I said I would like to, but I am not going to at all. You deserved it. I have 516 friends on FB but I have less than 10 REAL FRIENDS like we all do. No one has that many friends. Not even Paris Hilton, even though she’s slept with more than 516. These FB noodnicks say “I love You” all the time! They are not your friends. You have never had a drink or play-date with them. Go to Borders any afternoon and you will find puff-alumps just dying to be your friend, AND they’ll even let you touch them and go home with them for hours of Twilight Saga banter and valerian root. Then you can both post it on your walls and Keli, Roxanne, Mary and the stalker in 3C can comment on your ungodly night. And then I’ll read it and hemorrhage out my organs through an orifice of your choice. Proposed Solar Farms Hold up Renewable Energy for Residents Many local South Jersey residents and small to moderate businesses are ready right now to move forward with the installation of solar panels and other renewable energy projects for their homes and businesses. But they can’t go ahead because of an unfair system that puts them behind very large out of state companies that want to build big solar farms – and then export the electricity they produce out of state. These companies are pushing local residents and businesses to the back of the line for approval from the state Board of Public Utilities to connect to the electric grid. Reserving this valuable electric grid space for big out of state solar farms, to the exclusion of South Jersey, is just another in a long line of examples of South Jersey residents and small businesses – including F&S Produce in Rosenhayn and JM Enterprises in Cedarville -- getting the short end of the stick. The system is wrong and it needs to be changed. My Assembly colleagues, Nelson Albano and Matt Milam, and myself, are working with Atlantic City Electric and the BPU to change the system to a first come, first served process. These small businesses and residents are the victims of a regulatory process that unfairly reserves valuable electric grid space for proposed very large solar farms – that may not be able to produce electricity for up to seven years – while small businesses and residents, who are ready to do so right now, and here at home, wait in line. Atlantic City Electric and the BPU agree with Assemblymen Albano and Milam and me that this system simply makes no sense and we continue to move forward together to fix it. Included in our effort was a letter I recently wrote to Atlantic City Electric’s President, Vincent Maione, which, in addition to pointing out the inequities of the current system, noted that it is costing South Jersey, especially Cumberland County, hundreds of jobs right now, because the local solar panel projects are “shovel ready”. Therein lies the problem we all face: As soon as these large out of state companies apply to be on the Atlantic City Electric grid – which is fast running out of room – the space is reserved for them, significantly reducing the space that can be reserved for residents and businesses like F& S Produce and JM Enterprises, who, when they apply to be on the grid, have no room due to the lack of infrastructure in South Jersey. Just as important, the local residents and small businesses would use – right here at home -- the very electricity their solar and other renewable energy projects produce, while the large out of state solar farms would produce electricity for export outside of South Jersey. Atlantic City Electric and the BPU have, in my view, an obligation to take care of our own South Jersey residents and businesses first. That obligation can and should be met by putting them at the front of the line, not the end of the line, to reserve the grid space they need to get their projects up and running in the very foreseeable future, a change that would also reduce the demand on the electric company. I assure you that Assemblymen Albano and Milam and I are committed to work with Atlantic City Electric and the BPU to ensure that they “do the right thing”. The good news is that both the BPU and Atlantic City Electric seem committed to doing just that. We’ll keep pushing.

Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Petty Officer Salvador Carire Honored in WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02), Ranking Member of the House Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation Subcommittee, recently applauded Petty Officer Salvador Carire, a rescue swimmer stationed at Air Station Atlantic City, for being the recipient of the 2009 Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS)’s “Gold Medal” award. On December 23, 2009 Petty Officer Carire rescued the lone survivor of the fishing vessel, Alisha Marie, which submerged 36 nautical miles southeast of Barnegat Light, NJ. “I applaud Petty Officer Carire for his exemplary bravery and determination under the harshest of conditions to rescue a stranded
fisherman during last year’s Nor’easter. The result of his actions is undeniable; a life was saved,” said LoBiondo. “Salvador and his fellow colleagues at Air Station Atlantic City represent the dedication of the men and women of the Coast Guard to the traditional mission of search and rescue, and their critical role in keeping our nation’s waters safe. I congratulate Petty Officer Salvador Carire on this distinguished honor – an honor he rightly earned. At a Capitol Hill ceremony last week, LoBiondo joined Admiral Robert Papp, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, in presenting the Gold Medal award to Petty Officer Carire. Petty Officer Carire’s wife Leslie and daughter Lei Ann accompanied him to Washington.

Buena Regional High School 1975 For those Buena residents who graduated from Vineland High School before we had our own high school, Buena Regional HS probably still seems like a new school. But, its doors opened in September of 1973 – 37 years ago. There were no seniors in the school. They were allowed to remain at Vineland High School to finish up. The 1973-74 juniors became the first class to graduate from Buena in 1975 – 35 years ago. In the spring of 1974, the baseball team won the Cape-Atlantic League Championship. Not bad for a school without seniors, and for a team who came together for the first time that season. Class of 1975 spent their high school career in three different schools. Cleary was a junior high school then, grades 7 through 9. Freshman year was at Cleary. We were still a sending district to Vineland when they were sophomores, so they attended Vineland High School in the afternoon session. That is where I first met them as their Personal Typing teacher or study hall proctor. Buena Regional High School opened in 1973, so they came home for junior and senior years and became the first class to graduate from Buena Regional High School. Since you are usually around 18 years old when you graduate high school, those young ‘uns are in their early 50’s now. Since I was teaching there and was their class advisor, I won’t tell you where that puts me. The Principal, John Kulikowski, had the opportunity to put together a great faculty. He had an equal number of men and women; some already teaching in the district and some from outside; new teachers to very experienced teachers; teachers with graduate degrees as well as bachelor’s degrees; local folks and folks from other areas of the state. Ken Nelson, Buena Regional Middle School Principal, was one of those first year teachers. Maria Romeo Benedetto, teacher at Milanesi, was a member of that first graduating class. During the 1974-75 school year, we now had four grades, so we needed to add new faculty. Two teachers that came that year are still active members of the faculty at Buena Regional – Bob Gruccio and Barbara Meyrick. THE CLASS OF 1975 IS PLANNING A REUNION ON NOVEMBER 20. If you were part of that class, a teacher or staff member in the school at that time, you are invited. For further information, send an email to Buena1975@yahoo.com or contact Gary Leone on Facebook or by phone at 215-370-1009. Don’t forget our genealogy project. Forms are available at http://www.buenavistatownship.org Your work would make great Christmas gifts. We will be at Cranberry Run, Monday, November 8, at 6:30 p.m. If you want to schedule a program, call Gail Benson at 692-5227 or email BuenaHistorical@gmail.com If you remember stories about local history or have any questions, you can email us at BuenaHistorical@gmail.com or contact us by regular mail at P. O. Box 114, Buena, NJ 08310. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at 7:30 at the Buena Vista Township Municipal Building, Route 40, Buena

Washington Report by Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02)
Misguided Spending Priorities The history books will likely remember the 111th Congress with distinction. That distinction, however, has not been for the long-term benefit of our country or the American people. Statistics support that sentiment: unemployment remains near 10 percent; the deficit for the fiscal year ending September 30th was $1.413 trillion, or 9.9 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP); total federal spending during that same period increased by $535 billion; and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the national debt totals $13.260 trillion. Yes, the 111th Congress will surely be remembered…for its misguided spending priorities and further damage to our fragile economy. The excessive spending started immediately in 2009 with the $862 billion so-called “stimulus” bill that was meant to get our sluggish economy growing and spur job creation. Rather than targeted, proven job-creating projects such as shovel-ready construction jobs and business tax credits, taxpayers funded turtle highways in Florida and STD clinics in California. In South Jersey, projects that were already fully funded – such as the Route 52 Causeway - were involved in a shell game switch to refocus state funding elsewhere. And, as the year wore on, unemployment continued to rise as the bulk of the “stimulus” spending was spread out across the nation. The pattern continued into 2010 with selective taxpayer bailouts of the auto industry, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The ultimate misguided spending priority, however, resulted in the trillion dollar healthcare reform law, which promised new mandates and hefty tax increases on American families and small businesses for years to come. And least not we forget the inability of the House of Representatives to pass a budget – the first time since 1974 – and its decision to punt on all 12 of the annual appropriations bills needed to keep the federal government operating. To fund all of this new and unnecessary spending, this Congress has sought to increase taxes during the economic recession. That is exactly the opposite way to be create jobs and promote economic growth. By allowing many popular tax cuts that benefit families and small businesses - from the marriage penalty tax and the child tax credit to reductions of the tax rate on dividends and long-term capital gains – to expire at the end of the year, this Congress would effectively raise taxes in an economic recession. It is the wrong approach at the wrong time by Washington when the goal must be to create and sustain jobs. Increased spending and taxation, however, have never been my governing philosophy. I believe the best economic policies are those which support a smaller government while allowing taxpayers to keep more of their hard-earned money. In fact, that is how I run my office, which is one of the most fiscally responsible in the Congress. Since 1995, I have returned a total of $4.3 million in unspent office funds to the U.S. Treasury. Furthermore, I’ve never allowed for South Jersey taxpayers to pay for a car lease, a cell phone, or health insurance…and never will. Despite indicators of an economic recovery that some may point to, the real recovery won’t be felt by South Jersey families until they have well-paying jobs and less strain on their personal finances. It is for this reason that I support significant reductions in wasteful spending, making the expiring tax cuts permanent, and ensuring pro-growth economic policies are put in place. Our economy cannot grow if our country’s out-of-control spending continues. Our families cannot move forward if proposed tax increases keep holding them back. Looking forward to the 112th Congress, we need to get our priorities in order, focused on growing our economy and getting our citizens back to work.

A-h-h-h-h Fall! I love the Fall. With a childlike glee I look forward to the crisp and invigorating days of September through March. I can’t wait for the first snow. I love a beautiful snowfall. Then later the gentle and refreshing rains of spring will arrive, preparing the earth for flowers and other green things. And then there is summer--the season I like the least. Let’s just say I am not a “fun-n-the-sun” type of guy (Lord knows I don’t need a tan) and insects really bug me. Add to that the hot sun, and I am one miserable person during summer. Prior to moving to the fair city of Millville, I lived in Oscoda--- a small northern Michigan town located on the banks of Lake Huron---roughly 200 miles north of Detroit. I always looked forward to autumn, because the colors of the trees were so brilliant that people would come from all over just to see the “color show.” Then came winter----ahhhh winter—my family and I were always excited when the snow started to fall, and fall, and fall, and fall----and soon we would have snow that covered cars and came up to the tops of windows----and to see 3 or 4 feet on rooftops was not unusual. The great thing about Oscoda was that the town was well equipped to handle any amount of snowfall and usually, within 8 hours or so, all major streets were clear. And the cold was biting and it was relentless---but some of us like it cold. Winter snows brought opportunities to ice skate, sled, snowmobile, ski and most of all engage in numerous snowball fights. It was not unusual to see a snow man in almost everyone’s yard and, of course, the snow was a beautiful accent to Christmas lights and decorations. The true symbols of the Northland are the beautiful Siberian huskies and the many different types and styles of sleds they drew. Many of the sleds are uniquely designed. There are professional sled builders, but many people like the challenge of designing and building a sled from scratch---an ambitious task to be sure-- but very satisfying when completed. As much as I love fall and winter, I have mixed emotions when spring arrives. I love the refreshing spring rains and the slight chill still in the air, but it also signals that summer is soon to come. I try not to think of the summer season. In closing, let me say if we do get a significant snowfall this winter, I would ask those who hate snow not to picket out in front of my house. You can bring over beef jerky, hot cocoa, hot tea and if anyone has the blue prints for building a good dog sled, please bring them by-------Any Siberian Huskies out there? MUSH!!
