publisher’s note The holidays are the busiest time of year for most everyone, no matter what holiday you celebrate. My goal is to make this season easier on you. This issue provides you will find a “Gift Guide” including family-friendly local shops and top-notch national products. Also take advantage of the calendar where you will find Santa Sightings, Holiday Parades & Tree Lightings. Scrapbooking is a hobby of mine, and since the holidays equals family to me, I wanted to share a really fun way to highlight family. It’s always a great time to take family photos and look at old family photos, not just over the holidays but during the cold winter months when you‘re stuck in side. Don’t leave those pictures hidden in boxes or in digital files on your computer hard drive. Scrapbooks have come a long way from the old magnetic albums. Now it’s easy to upload those special memories to your favorite website and create online albums. One of my favorite websites for creating 12X12 album pages is now called MyPublisher.com. Try it by clicking on their link located at the JerseyShoreFamily.com homepage. Enjoy a free photo book from JSF. It’s as easy as uploading your photos, finding the product that fits your needs, and creating it with a click of the mouse. You can also create holiday cards and other unique photo gifts. The most common New Year resolution is getting in shape or staying in shape, so to start the New Year right JSF has included some ideas about keeping fit with the family this winter. Additional fun family activities are suggested for keeping busy over the two-week Winter Break. We have incorporated a new page in this issue—teen book reviews written by your local middle schools students. Hopefully these reviews will be just the thing to encourage your children to want to read. Maybe your child will even ask for a book for the holidays! Feel free to encourage your son or daughter to read a book and submit their review to JSF for publication. Please stop and visit our advertisers this Holiday Season. Let them know – “You saw it Jersey Shore Family!” After all, they are the reason you have so much great information at your finger tips.
Happy Holidays from Jersey Shore Family!

Family Fitness During the Winter Months by Deanne P. Walther, DRT
As we all know getting exercise is the key to good health, but during the winter months finding time to exercise as a family becomes a challenge. We have included some healthy recipes along with some fun ideas that will help families exercise together. Outside possibilities include tubing, sledding, skiing, and ice skating. Getting exercise inside to avoid the frigid weather may include: • Jumping jacks • Jog in place • Hula hoop contest • Dance party • Jump rope • Pilates • Yoga • Run up and down steps • High knees
• Push-ups • Indoor ice skating • Wii exercises • Bowling • Mall walking • Strength training • Treadmill • Stationary bike
Do these exercises for 25-30 seconds, then rest for 25 seconds. Repeat three times trying to increase your intensity with each repetition. These exercises can even be performed at commercial breaks while watching television! For more recipes and other resources on eating well for less, visit the OSU web site at www.healthyrecipes.oregonstate.edu. Source: Oregon State University Extension Service. Fun Holiday craft easy for the kids.. Gingerbread houses are a yearly tradition in our family like many of yours, I’m sure. This year the girls wanted to have full artistic license, so I took the easy way out and shopped for a pre-fab house. They loved it. We came close to having a whole gingerbread village to construct until I talked them out of that, knowing their ability to concentrate may not outlast the project. We brought our house home and daddy helped them glue it together with icing. I opened the candy that came with the house and, knowing it wouldn’t be enough for them, I brilliantly offered up their Halloween candy. They were so excited to decorate the house that they agreed. This was the girls’ project, and other than putting the structure together and squeezing the icing onto the house, they put it together themselves. This budget friendly project cost less than $10.00, courtesy of the Mother’s Club of Absecon and Galloway for their donation. Fortunately, the Halloween candy was free. Have fun with your pre-fab gingerbread house, and remember it does not have to be perfect. Just have fun, and let the children run wild with their creative abilities. Thanks to the Cooper Family.. See more of “Cooking with the Coopers” in upcoming issue of Jersey Shore Family!

Up Close and Personal:
Elite Salon by Shiryle Seyler
Rarely is there a time when a business and community spirit come together with a common purpose. Christopher Longo, owner and Master Stylist/Colorist of Elite Salon of Linwood, has a vision: “At my business, I want to create an atmosphere where you’re a part of our family. I want to know your sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, and friends. I want this salon to be a meeting place, a gathering place where one feels welcome.” With his mother, Diane Longo, as the backbone of wisdom and support, this nice Italian family has set a course to transform the salon experience. At Elite Salon, one of the key elements of service is the art of listening: understanding a client’s vision of what they desire in a hairstyle, what overall “look” they want. “Hair is an accessory you wear every day; it’s important we get it right,” says Longo. Each client is evaluated by way of a consultation to identify his or her needs and hair-care goals. It is crucial that the stylist and client be on the same page. All stylists are licensed and rigorously trained in a unique, ninemonth apprenticeship program,
learning the A-Zs of cuts, color, and consultation. This ensures the stylist’s ability to handle any hair-care challenge that comes his or her way. The salon presently employs two full-time stylists, and four additional licensed stylists are actively engaged in the apprenticeship program. A professional barber and a full-time esthetician/skincare specialist are also employed. There are plans to engage a nail technician and certified massage therapist. With 11 hair stations and rooms dedicated to facials, massage therapy, and manicure/ pedicure, making this local salon a viable mini-spa experience. Christopher Longo of Elite Salon speaks from a heart determined to forge a strong bond with the community by offering his clients a warm family atmosphere, exceptional customer service, welltrained staff, and top-of-the-line hair and skin-care products. Elite Salon is open Tues. – Fri. 9am - 9 pm and Sat. 9am - 5pm Hair Care Tip: Always use sulfate free shampoos and paraben free conditioners. They are gentler on the hair and won’t fade color or strip the natural oils from the hair.

As you gather with family and friends this holiday season, I would guess that you will not only take lots of photos, but you may dig out some old photos to look at and reminisce. Isn’t it fun to capture your kids’ faces as they open presents or spend time with grandma? And don’t we get a great laugh at what we looked like in years past, and remember things that at the time seemed disastrous, but in retrospect are funny? Photos help us celebrate the present and remember the past, but do the mounds of digital photos or the piles of printed pictures overwhelm you? As the cold weather approaches, why not think about doing something about your photo dilemma! Cozy up indoors and make a plan. You could start by choosing the pictures you most recently took and print them to place in an album. You can choose the best ones; there is no need to use every shot you took. Write the highlights of the pictures and your feelings as you look at them; it’s a tangible way to preserve your memories. Then add those photos and journal boxes to an album page. A scrapbook album doesn’t need to be complicated, and creating it can be good therapy for the after-holiday blues. Gather some friends for a scrapbooking party and share ideas while you make a keepsake album and have some fun.

There are all sizes and types of albums to choose from, including digital books. You can choose a theme (a vacation or holiday), or a person (a parent or child), or a chronological time line. My first scrapbooks were “life books” for my children, and they became one of their college graduation gifts. And, NO, I didn’t start when they were little – my oldest son was 20 when I decided to tackle this project. How special it was to see his face as he opened those albums and poured over the pictures and journals of his growing-up years. I was able to document the things we did together as a family and portray his incredible value as part of our family. It was his family history. In the process of creating life books for my daughters as well as my son, my life was enhanced by reliving those precious memories we all share. I have also completed vacation albums, a Christmas album with annual Christmas letters and photo cards I have sent out each year since I’ve been married, and a heritage album with vintage family photos. But my favorite albums are the ones I have given as gifts. Do you know someone who would love an album honoring them? www.JerseyShoreFamily.com December 2011/January 2012

“Out of the Dust” by Karen Hesse Reviewed by Samuel Adamo
This is the story about Billie Jo Kelby, a 14 year old, who tells the poverties of her living on her family’s wheat farm during the Oklahoma Panhandle during the years of the Great Depression. Billie Jo and her family are barely making it by, and on top of that her mother is giving birth to another child. Furthermore, the winds and dust keeps destroying her father’s wheat. The only time Billie Jo can be happy is when she is playing her beloved piano, however a terrible misfortune happened. Billie Jo’s mother mistakes a bucket of kerosene for a bucket of water and it catches her dress on fire, and Billie Jo’s hands got burned badly. Billie Jo wants to help, but she accidently pours more water on her. Billie Jo’s mother dies along with her new born brother, leaving only Billie Jo and her father.
