editor’s note Sherrii Brentari, Editor As the holidays approach, stress fills the air. It’s the most beautiful time of the year.. and the busiest. I’ve never quite gotten a handle on the concept “less is more.” When it comes to all things holiday related, to me “more” is more. Without fail, I plan too many outings with the kids, make too many plans, start too many projects, and buy too many presents. Every year, I promise myself I’m going to scale things back. And sometimes I actually attempt to do just that, resulting in last minute panic to make up for whatever is lacking. And, of course, I want everything to be perfect. My grandmother used to say “Christmas and Thanksgiving are just days—exactly like any other day—but with unrealistic expectations.” I have good intentions. I want the holidays to be fun and memorable, but I don’t want those memories for my children to include mommy yelling and complaining about an unfinished project or because the lights on the tree aren’t “just right.” Over the years, I’ve learned to keep some things in perspective. If all of the ornaments end up on the same side of the tree, that’s OK as long as we have fun decorating it. If I end up having only 4 side dishes at the Thanksgiving dinner table, that’s just less dishes to wash later. If I learned one thing from my grandmother, it’s to at least try to enjoy my kids and stay in the moment. Years ago, I labored over each gift box, struggling with ribbons and bows wanting each package to be a work of art. Two kids later and I still love to wrap presents, but I have to admit.. gift bags are starting to look like the way to go. And, although every year I struggle with finding the perfect number of gifts to put under the tree, I know 10 years from now no one will remember exactly how many presents were opened.. but I hope they remember that I was there, enjoying every minute as I watched them tear off the wrapping paper. Happy holidays, try to remember what’s really important, take time to enjoy your kids and, above all, don’t sweat the small stuff.

Dear Friends, It is sure hard to believe that the holidays are upon us! It seems like only yesterday we were soaking in the sun and sand of the Jersey Shore. If you are a regular reader, I’m sure you’ve gotten the impression that we love raising our family at the Jersey Shore and winter is no exception. I love this time of year and I am looking forward to lots of great adventures with the kids. We have compiled a lot of fun events and interesting activities for you to do with your family. This is the first of our two month combined issues (January and February will be also combined before we go back to monthly issues in March). Putting together the events calendar for two months was quite a chore and we had to leave some events out just to save space so be sure to check our Facebook page for event updates (www.facebook.com/jerseyshorefamily). In addition to great events, now is the time of year to be thinking about your health. You are probably starting to think about your New Year’s Resolutions and I hope a healthy lifestyle is on your list. I love almost anything outside and have been an avid runner for a few years (see the picture of my kids helping to support me after I finished the ½ marathon in Atlantic City), so it’s not hard to imagine that health and fitness are important to me and my family. This issue is the first part of a two-part series focused on your health, the family’s health and fun and fitness. I know finding time for healthy options and squeezing in some time for fitness can be challenging when you’re raising a family so hopefully our topics can help. Fitting in fitness

There is no question, family life is hectic. Soccer practice, dance lessons, doctors appointments, grocery shopping and a million other parental jobs often make exercise seem like a luxury. Everyone knows the benefits of exercise, but not everyone knows how to squeeze it into an already jammed schedule. We reached out to a two Jersey Shore moms who are committed to fitting in fitness, and we found they had one thing in common. Can you guess what it is? “I like to have fun,” says Nance Piazza, a Richland resident and mother of 3 boys. “I always tell everybody ‘Get out there and live.’” Nance stresses that she doesn’t need a fancy gym membership or special “work-out” clothes; when she finds a little time between commitments she throws on her sneakers and takes the dog for a quick walk. Sometimes she just turns on some music and gets moving. “I don’t even use
videos,” says Nance. “You need to be in a room with a TV and you have to work out for the specified time. With no video, a person can go to any free room in the house.You just need music and 15 minutes.” “I have always loved sports. Having three boys has been a blast,” says Nance. “I don’t sit home. I’m right out there with them. We go roller skating, play street hockey, or just run around in the yard.” Doing active things as a family is the perfect opportunity to get in a work out, enjoy the company of your kids, and have some fun. Lisa McGowen, a mother of 3, recently relocated to the Jersey Shore. “When I first moved here, I felt a little lost,” said Lisa. “I got caught up setting up the house and helping the kids get adjusted. Before I knew it, 6 months had passed and I still hadn’t joined a local gym.”

Lisa belonged to her previous gym for over 10 years and attended several different classes each week. “I realized I had less energy and actually wasn’t getting as much done as I normally would have,” said Lisa. “Some of the fun had just been sucked out of my life. I made great friends at my last gym and I really had fun being a part of a group.” Lisa found a gym with a Kids Club near her daughter’s day care and several nights a week they now stop there on their way home. “It’s not always easy. Sometimes I feel like I should just skip the gym and go home and start dinner. Then I realize an hour isn’t going to kill my schedule and I’m really a better mom when I have the energy to do things with my kids. I wouldn’t have that without taking a few hours for myself every week.” The key is finding an activity you enjoy that meshes with your schedule If you like what you do during your workout, you’ll view it as fun rather than an obligation.
Virtual Fitness? Increasingly busy schedules are driving some people to find alternatives to the traditional work out. No time for the gym? Treadmill offering no motivation? With the internet and computers now providing a forum for everything from medical advice to family reunions, it’s not surprising to see a growing trend toward virtual personal trainers, cyber work-outs, and virtual fitness products like Wii Fit. Although Wii Fit is no longer the only exercisebased game promising improved health and fitness to its players, it appears to be the most popular. There are even Wii Fit clubs popping up on line. The game’s balance board is not only a portal to the virtual training program, it also serves as a scale and weight journal oddly holding the player accountable in much the same way as a Weight Watcher’s weigh-in. The game format encourages users to focus on the fun. Fitness is almost a side-effect rather than the ultimate goal. Although virtual fitness isn’t necessarily the answer for everyone, it’s bound to be on a lot of virtual wish lists this season. WE ARE

“We wanted to invite Molly’s entire pre-school and our whole family, so we needed a place with enough space to accommodate 6065 people,” said Lisa. “The prices are so reasonable and the staff is so easy to work with, every event is a great experience.” Lisa was so pleased with her daughter Molly’s party that she is currently in the process of planning a party for her youngest daughter, Olivia, at the Aquarium. “I think it’s a great combination of fun and learning,” said Lisa. “After being a teacher for 13 years, I always try to disguise learning with fun. The Aquarium is perfect for that. The children have so much fun they don’t even realize they are learning a thing or two.” The birthday party packages are designed to create a stress free event for the family so they can relax and enjoy the day with their child, while the Aquarium staff does all the work! Packages include use of the party room, unlimited access to the entire aquarium, entrance to any of the daily shows, and exclusive access to the Shark and Ray Touch Tank. Just bring a cake and order pizza or a sandwhich tray and leave the rest to the staff. “The Aquarium is the perfect place to have a child’s first birthday,” says Lisa Schall, the Assistant Executive Director of the Atlantic City Aquarium. “First birthday parties are attended by mostly family, and there is usually a span in ages. There is something for everyone at the Aquarium, so it’s an easy fit.” “Guests have access to the aquarium before and after the time in the party room for as long as they like. I usually recommend inviting guests to enjoy the aquarium a half hour before their party gets underway in the party room. This way, their guests will have ample time to check out the aquarium
