www.jccatlantic.org Would you like a preschool with a TRUE CLASS MODEL where your child can develop lasting friendships in seeing the same children everyday (rather than a day care model)? Now in its 40th year, the school is a nonreligious educational experience in which parents get to really enjoy and actively participate in their children’s early school years. We have wonderful, qualified teachers in the classroom, but it is the children’s parents who actually run the school. This is done through volunteer Board and Committee members who are parents of the current students. At our school, each parent serves in a volunteer position based on their level of availability. We enable ownership in your child’s education- this can range from serving on the board in voting on all matters of running the school to raking leaves on our playground with other parents, preparing goodie bags for the kids’ holiday parties, or planning creative fundraisers to benefit the school. There is a small responsibility that can fit most parents’ busy schedules. Each parent also has the opportunity to attend class with their child about once per month to see firsthand the play-based learning that naturally teaches the skills to prepare for kindergarten. We are one of the few preschools in the area that offers a true class model where the same children see each other on regularly scheduled days as compared to the day care model where parents drop their children off as needed. This is a school where you will get to know every student in your child’s class, as well as their parents. We are the ONLY COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL in Atlantic County

Bear and Bunny
by Daniel Pinkwater, Illustrated by Will Hillenbrand (Candlewick Press 2015 $15.99) Beloved children’s author Daniel Pinkwater and mixed media illustrator Will Hillenbrand score with another lovely picture book titled Bear and Bunny. This book by Candlewick Press was released in December 2015. This book is the next adventure of Bear and Bunny who met in Bear in Love where Bear and Bunny become friends. They like to wander in the woods, talk to each other until they tire and need naps. The charm of their friendship is that they do not even recognize they are from two different species: “You see the bear is sure the bunny is a very small bear. The bunny is sure that the bear is a very large bunny.” One day, they discuss why they want a pet to take care of and feed, and share love. A pinecone Bear finds doesn’t seem to be a good pet, nor does the caterpillar Bunny spots on a tree. Eventually they see something moving up in the tree and assume it is a kitten. As a read-aloud, this is where the parents and kids listening to the story will love this twist to the story. (What Bear and Bunny help down out of the tree is really a frog but they are convinced it is a kitten.) Young children and their parents will love this story of friendship and acceptance. Bear, Bunny and Kitten prove that family is what you make, and hopefully we can look forward to reading many more of their adventures.
Newly orphaned Jax wakes up on the day after his thirteenth birthday to find…nothing. Well, not exactly nothing. Cars, houses and Walmarts are still there but no people. Is it a Zombie apocalypse? An Alien invasion? No, it’s Grunsday. An extra day between Wednesday and Thursday that only people who call themselves Transitioners--they transition between the two timelines—experience. There is another race called the Kin that are trapped in the eighth day, only living on Grunsday. Both Kin and Transitioners have some limited magic powers dating back to the time of King Arthur when the Kin started making war on the Normals. This was why the Eighth-Day Spell was created and there are some powerful Kin families who would like nothing more than to break the spell. Jax discovers a young Kin living next door, Evangeline, and it is his job to help keep her safe from people who would use her to break the spell. Breaking the spell could trigger a real apocalypse. But on Eighth Day you can trust no one and not everyone is who—or what—they seem.

by K.E. Ormsbee (Chronicle Books, 2015, $16.99)
The Water and the Wild by K. E. Ormsbee is a middle grade fantasy novel that follows Lottie Fiske into a magical world and on a journey that is reminiscent of C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. It also contains the everlasting friendship that binds together the Golden Trio of Rowling’s Harry Potter series as Lottie races against the clock with her new friends to find the cure for Eliot, the one friend that’s always stood by her side. But even though it reminds of the books from my childhood that stuck with me through the years, it contains its
The story never drags as we take the epic journey through the sprites’ world that’s on the brink of war: learning with Lottie of the genda, the bird familiars that all sprites possess, and the magical keen that is unique to every sprite and sometimes isn’t so much a gift as a curse. The worst part of the book was that it came to an end, and it will leave the reader eager for the next installment. Kristen Comeaux, Atlantic County Library System/Egg Harbor Township

SCATTERING SEEDS OF KINDNESS...
Local student makes a Difference! By Mari Dattolo
Brynley Riis, a local ten year old, started making back sacks with her grandmother as a project that grew into a welcome gift for children at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. As a volunteer at the Shelter, her Mom, Stephanie, introduced Brynley and her twin, Emiley to the rewards of helping kids who are less fortunate. Over summer vacation, the girls with their mom, worked on the Rescue Mission’s Farm and then started selling “Brynley’s Bags” to finance the project. Brynley says, “I thought it would be a good idea to donate them because kids love them so much and we thought it would be a nice treat for their arrival”. Brynley is a student at Linwood’s Belhaven School and hopes that her
18
school will join her effort to make a difference for the less fortunate kids who live at the Shelter. She says, “I think that kids should always try help out others and be thankful for what they have because some kids don’t have as much stuff as we do.” Recently, she worked at her first craft show at Mays Landing’s “Art in the Park” followed by Ocean City’s Block Party. Brynley’s Bags have an active Facebook Page where you can reach them to put your order in. Bag sacks start at $15 with a variety of patterns and run up to $25 for large quilted options. Messages are typically returned the same day. For more information visit www.facebook.com/brynleysbags
