The Underwater Subsurfer is advertised as a “Learning toy” intended to teach kids to surf. We’re not sure about all that - but it is certainly challenging and a lot of fun. Balance is the key, and it takes a while to get the hang of it. Once our kids (and dads and even a few moms) got the hang of it they were doing tricks and having tons for fun. — www.splashsupercenter.com

LifeProof iPhone Case — The LifeProof iPhone case protects your iPhone from four main elements; water, snow, dirt and shock. It protects it from beach sand, wet hands and damp towels. We really putIN-HOME it through the PERSONAL ringer and it has survived being in the ocean and in our surfer boy’s wet board short pockets. We CHEF SERVICE dropped it, buried it in the sand, gave it to our kids to play with and it came out with flying colors. Amazing resistance to very Amanda Nahas fine particles of sand, water, sunscreen IN-HOME PERSONAL and everything else we could think Chef/Owner of, it’s a winner for sure—a protective CHEF SERVICE case, designed to work against harsh elements and it does. The sound is 609.992.5251 great, the ringer is a bit subdued. Amanda Nahas ChefAmanda@WhipItOut.net The best thing about it is that it’s Chef/Owner very slim and fits well in regular www.WhipItOut.net pockets. A must have for anyone with an iPhone.

Superdisc: Amazingly accurate, our older kids had fun aiming for targets along with playing catch. Flys super far without much effort. Super durable... even great for a game of fetch with your pup!
sprint flying ring: Same quality construction... a little different feel. Some of the little guys didn’t quite get the “ring” concept and used it in unconventional ways.... bracelet, anklet, target... still fun. Older kids were amazed at how far these suckers fly. We almost lost one on the beach because it flew so far away! —www.aerobie.com

Summer 2012
A Father’s Day Well Spent by Rob Merlino
is the game at hand. Being the coach of this team at this game was one of my prouder moments, but I didn’t know it yet. As the warm and dusty afternoon wore on, my ball players revel in the moment. I do too. I get elated when my pitcher strikes out the side, when my son bunts for a base hit, when one of his friends hits a bases clearing triple to tie the game. I feel the sense of dejection when a kid hits into a double play or gets thrown out stealing. I was as into this game as my players. When the game ended, we were victorious. I handed out game balls to the kids, gave out some well deserved high fives, and shook the hands of other happy Little League dads. Even the losing team left the field that day with smiles on their faces. What better way to spend a late Spring Sunday than at the ball field with your friends and your dad. As a father, there is nothing like watching, and in my case, coaching, your son in a Little League All Star game. That was five years ago. My little All Star has graduated high school and played his last high school questions, or to consign with us, call or email game. Since that Father’s Day when we played the All Star Game, I have watched him win a Babe Ruth Championship (on Father’s Day), seen him hit a home run in a high school game, and watched as he struck out 12 batters in the final game of his high school career. He still has some summer baseball to play and he’s going to play in college, but the days of me coaching his teams are over. A funny thing happened along the way since that day. My Little Leaguer grew into a young man; a Father’s Day can be a time of reflection. For many fathers, Father’s Day means a bit of rest and relaxation. It’s a day when you are the focus of attention. Lucky dads get showered with gifts ranging from a string sculpture your 6 year old made in art class at school to a nice dinner out with a loving and thankful spouse. While that sounds idyllic, it’s not been that way for me. I preferred to spend many Father’s Days at the baseball field. Not watching the pros, but coaching the kids. You see, in my town, Father’s Day is when we hold our Little League All Star Game. I brought my son up through the ranks, from tee ball all the way to Little League and beyond. As a twelve year old, he was finally an All Star. While some may think a little hammock time with a cold beer is the way to spend the day, I liked being out there with the kids, with their wide eyed enthusiasm and naive, unstained view of the world. To a twelve year old Little League All Star, the only thing that matters

Summer 2012
As a father, there is nothing like watching, and in my case, coaching, your son in a Little League All Star game. very kind, responsible, respectful, and likable young man. When he gave his Senior year speech, he begged me and my wife to attend. He spoke about what the game of baseball has done for him, about how it taught him sportsmanship, the value of teamwork, the importance of friendship. He told many stories of his “conquests” on the field over the years and how he will cherish those memories forever. Near the end of his speech, my wife
turned to me and said, “honey, this speech is all about you.” She didn’t notice the lone tear trickling down my cheek. This Father’s Day, there will be no baseball or All Star Games. We will spend the day with my parents, just hanging out and having a sumptuous mid-day meal of lobster and steamers. We may play a little whiffle ball in the yard, but I will certainly spend some time reflecting on many Fathers Days well spent.

Giving back to the commmunity “Love It Forward” is a faith based group of women who come from different walks of life and different age groups ranging from 15 – 79 years old who have a collective vision of people consciously helping others in every day circumstances. If we all “love it forward” on a daily basis, think of what our community could achieve! Members of “Love it Forward” reach out to the community individually and as a group. The group has received support from local churches and food establishments in the area, that have offered to donate meals to families in crisis. Love It Forward volunteers recently visited Sunrise Nursing Home in Galloway and sang songs from the resident’s era. Sunrise residents enjoyed the performance and munched on cookies and cream puffs while they received hand massages and manicures. With smiles on their faces, residents joined in song and danced. “Our efforts were rewarded by seeing the joy we provided that particular evening,” said Janice Bucknam, Love It Forward volunteer. “For Valentine’s Day we gave small boxes of candy to people in our community who we thought would benefit from a kind gesture. When given her box of candy, a Wawa employee was brought to tears, and a woman who recently moved from Russia, speaking very little English, gave our group member a bear hug, and then accompanied us to the nursing home to “love it forward” by polishing nails. These actions are proving to be contagious, and it feels good to give of yourself and touch someone’s life. By networking and encouraging others to get involved, blessings begin to unfold.” “Individually, we are involved in activities that we each have a heart for. Some of our women visit the elderly, cook meals for individuals who are in need, help young, single moms with clothing for their children, offer prayer, as well as donating food baskets,” said Bucknam. “The possibilities are endless. We all see the needs of people around us and say someone should do something…. “Love It Forward” is doing that…. one person at a time. Do you have a special talent, or connection that could help? Do you want to be involved? Love It Forward meets every 1st and 3rd Thursday 6pm at BAYADA 35 Central Square, Linwood. For more information call Janice Bucknam at 609-226-1947.

Sleep Away Camp Survival Guide OMG! Sleep-away camp—are you ready for that? I’m talking mostly about your children, but what about you? Are you ready? Your baby wants to sleep away from home with children you don’t know, bugs, and questionable hygiene practices. Calm down. Breathe. You’ll be OK and so will they! Anxiety is normal and common especially for first time parents and first children. There are adult camp counselors and older teen assistants that are in charge of a certain amount of children at all times. Camp administrators can tell you the ratio of supervision to children in a group when making your decision. According to statistics there are 10,000 camps in the United States, 60% are sleep away, with over 6 million kids attending each year. Really. So if your child is 8 years of age or older they may attend. But you may also want to consider other factors beside age. Has your child slept away from home without you? Has he or she spent a weekend with friends or attended a sleep-over party? Was it a positive experience? If so, you can expect those positive away-from-home experiences to transfer to the sleep-away camp experience. There are lots of options for sleep away camps too. Is your child an outgoing actor? Maybe he or she is the athletic type. Or does he or she love all things scientific? How about computers? Does he or she have special medical needs? You name it; they have a camp for it! Does your child want to be close to home in New Jersey or is he or she more adventurous and want to go further away? Many even have important designated down
time for your child to just chill, recharge his or her batteries, and hang out with new-found friends. Sleep-away camps come in all shapes and sizes both big and small. Now is the time to do your research and maybe some legwork too! Lots of camps allow you to visit in person (which is a good idea to see them up and running), or invite you to check them out online. Most have brochures and pictures as well as testimonials and a gazillion programs from which your child may choose. Consider this experience your introduction to what it will be like if your child decides to go away to college. Get to your computer keyboard and make a new Favorite Page File or sharpen your pencil (do they still do that?), and get surfing! According to veteran campers and camp Program Directors, campers can find new friends, learn new things, develop better self-esteem, social skills, develop more confidence, or just have plain fun. Most camps have all you need to know on their websites as well as stores online where you can purchase all the gear your child needs. Definitely get a stamp with your child’s name on it to put on every piece of clothing. You can pack a survival package with your child’s favorite food, snacks, and personal items to help his or her adjustment to camp life and take a little bit of home to camp. Just ask the camp what is allowed first. Your child will need a bag or two full of his or her favorite clothes and activityappropriate shoes, not to mention some money for snacks and other small necessities. Don’t forget to pack plenty of stationery and stamped envelopes for writing home and some special family

photos and favorite books to make them feel more at home. And talk to them about the appropriate behavior you expect of them and what behavior they should allow and not allow from others. Advise them on how they should handle any awkward or unexpected situation they might face. You may want to write a love note with a few words of encouragement and slip it into your child’s belongings where you know they will find it once they settle in. It may be just what they need that first night in a new place! There are experts to help you make your decision easier such as The National Camp Association, spokesman Jeff Solomon (845354-5504) and author of, How To Choose A Summer Camp. Alcove Children’s Grief Center
A Southern New Jersey Resource The Alcove Center for Grieving Children and Families in Northfield is an important resource for grieving families in southern New Jersey. Founded in 2001, The Alcove is a nonprofit organization which annually provides peer support groups for more than 350 children, teens and their caregivers after the death of a loved one. It is located at 376 Tilton Road-Rear, behind the Sunbank. Groups meet every other week during the school year, and monthly over the summer. On meeting nights, about 40 children and caregivers have a pizza dinner and social time, then break into age-appropriate groups for an art activity and discussion time. The Alcove runs groups for ages 3-6, 7-10, 11-14 and 15 to 18. While the kids meet, their caregivers also participate in a separate group. Groups at the center are run by trained volunteers and overseen by social workers. In addition, The Alcove runs groups in 22 schools in high-risk, distressed communities of Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland Counties. These groups are run by a Master’s level social worker who is the agency’s School Outreach Coordinator. Peer support is key to helping children realize they are not alone in the grieving process, and to help them become comfortable sharing their feelings about the loved one who died and their feelings of loss. Children who participate in peer support groups after the death of a loved one have been shown in research to fare better emotionally even years after the death, compared to children who are left to cope alone. The coping skills developed in the groups, including learning how to ask for help, find others who understand, and share their feelings in a constructive way, are skills they will use throughout their lives. To refer a family to The Alcove, call Family Intake Coordinator Sandra Purintan at (609) 484-1133. Staff at the Alcove are also available to give a presentation on The Alcove to meetings or other professionals interested in children and grief. To learn more about The Alcove, call for materials to be sent to you, or visit the agency’s online site at: www.thealcove.org
