What is your favorite Jersey Shore attraction? When you’re lucky enough to live in an area as diverse and beautiful as ours, it’s difficult to have a favorite. Like potato chips – you can’t just have one. I have so many favorites I just couldn’t come up with a Top 10 List of things to do this summer. My tastes are so eclectic and my choices so varied I couldn’t even limit the list to 50. So, instead, I decided to offer up a different thing to do for each of the 93 days of summer. You’ll see some classic must-do summer favorites, maybe a few new attractions you’ve never heard of, but surely you’ll find at least a few things to add to your own summer to-do-list.

AC hotspots fire up the night A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away–ringing bells, flashing lights and the glorious clang of coins falling were the pinnacle of Atlantic City nightlife. All that changed when, with the force and intensity of a Nor'Easter, after-hours and late-night clubs began populating Atlantic City and forever changed the entertainment climate of the area. Over the past 10 years, the landscape and atmosphere of Atlantic City has been spiraling into a mecca for partygoers and vacationers alike. by sherrii brentari

"The nightlife in Atlantic City is on its way to being fabulous," says David Peña, 36, owner of the immensely successful Planet Rose karaoke bar in The Quarter and its predecessor of the same name in New York City. "I wouldn't really say it has reached its peak... There is still room for so many things to come." High profile enterprises such as The Walk, The Pier at Caesars', and Tropicana's The Quarter have brought the area's retail and entertainment scene to new heights with each destination vying for its share of the newly attracted upscale clientele. Whether you prefer dancing to the pop and fizz of champagne bottles or the surging beat of party tracks there is sure to be a locale to suit your style. Perhaps no other establishment typifies the kind of high-end variety available as The Quarter. "Under one roof The Quarter hosts Atlantic City's best nightlife," says Mark Giannantonio, president and chief operating officer of Tropicana Casino and Resort. "This is a revolutionary concept. No other resort in the city is able to match the quantity and quality of entertainment options The Quarter presents to its guests." Variety indeed. The Quarter is home to such varied venues as Providence, Cuba Libre, The Missle bar and the ever popular Planet Rose (just to name a few). "It's kind of like a Bourbon Street atmosphere," says Peña. "The Quarter has this great energy that attracts a young, hip crowd." About four years ago, Peña expounded on his love for Karaoke and successful experience with his first club, and introduced Planet Rose to Atlantic City. It was just the right mix. "I didn't want to change the mood of the Quarter. It's supposed to be kooky, so I embraced the kookiness," said Peña. "I never want people to feel awkward. I want them to feel like they can escape from life. Be a star. Act a little crazy. Have a little fun." "We built Planet Rose from scratch," said Peña. "I knew right away it had to be karaoke all the time. Once you set up a vision or a theme you must be passionate about it." Peña describes his business style as the Willie Wonka approach. "I never set out to develop a trendy bar or club. I just try to create the kind of place I'd want to hang out." Peña believes Atlantic City will keep growing with unique venues. By taking chances and coming out with new concepts and ideas the dining and nightlife arena will continue to expand. Peña strives to develop concepts that haven't been done yet. "Once you find a formula that works you have to mix it up," said Peña. "We can't all keep sucking off the same udder. If everyone taps into the same theme it becomes watered down."

Peña's credibility in clubland is pretty much unmatched, so when he approached Resorts Casino with a new idea for a radically different retro-style club they were all ears. His vision was for a club that offered a mixture of different decades and all the great things he loved from growing up. He proposed a look-back at the 70's and 80's and a celebration of that time period. Resorts understood that vision and had the perfect room available. And just like that–his most recent brainchild, Boogie Nights, was born. With three highly successful clubs under his belt, Peña makes attracting clubbers seem easy. But ask any club manager– competing with the almost endless parade of entertainment venues is anything but easy. Clubs like Borgata's mur.mur and the MIXX rival the glitz and the glamour of the casinos by creating a multimillion dollar atmosphere and catering to an exclusive upscale clientele. On any given Friday, scores of socialites happily stand in long lines for the chance to rub elbows with the celebrity-studded crowds of South Jersey's beautiful people. Of course, getting those who call the Jersey Shore home to continue to flock may be a bit challenging. There is no shortage of visual spectacularama, celeb appearances or other strategies to entice the trend-setting scenesters to local venues. The once popular "Ladies Night" is on its way out–the only requirement for reduced prices was a double-X chromosome and perhaps a Double-D something to match. Instead, now many clubs rely on the appearance of exclusivity or high-tech equipment to attract clubbers. The Taj Mahal's Casbah Club, one of AC's first high-end clubs, maintains its success, in part, by featuring the eye-popping beauty of The Casbah Club dancers in their bootylicious attire, gyrating to the beat on strategically placed elevated platforms. Sometimes the biggest crowd pleaser a club can have is the crowd itself; think bodacious bikini babes that frequent The Pool at Harrahs. Regardless of the hook, attraction, or amenities offered (or not) by the many after-dark hotspots, AC's nightlife is alive and well as evident by the crowds that continually flow into local clubs like so much Cristal in a VIP booth. Not sure where to get your groove on? Check out this sizzlingsampling of Atlantic City hot spots:
Tropicana/Providence 609.345.7800 • www.providenceclubac.com Described as a New York City Nightclub and Ultra Lounge, the Providence features an energetic vibe, DJ "spin-offs" with bottle service and VIP lounge areas. Well-known DJ's dominate two DJ booths and create a high energy, back and forth "dance mix" throughout the night. Ideal for groups and bachelor/bachelorette parties, Providence is the premiere nightlife venue in Atlantic City. Doors open at 10 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tropicana/Cuba Libre 609.348.6700 • www.cubalibrerestaurant.com On weekend nights, after dinner hours, Cuba Libre turns into one of Atlantic City's most exciting and unique night spots. Dance all night to the DJ spinning salsa and other upbeat Latin music through a state-of-the-art sound system. Late night Latin Floor Shows every Friday and Saturday feature Cuban master percussionists, singers and DJs spinning Tropical Dance, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and Latin House music. You never know what you might see or who you will run into at Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar. Open 7 days, call for hours. Tropicana/Planet Rose 609.344.6565 • www.planetrose.com Planet Rose hosts a non-stop karaoke party nightly. Thousands and thousands of songs to choose from and the best service and drink selection in the galaxy, make Planet Rose an AC locals favorite. Thanks to its deliberately garish décor and unique take on the fine art of karaoke, Planet Rose encourages an over the top attitude that allows people to get a little freaky and adds to the fun of a night out with friends. Call for hours. Taj Mahal/Casbah 609.449.5138 • www.casbahclub.com Noted as Atlantic City's first mega club, the Casbah set the bar for Atlantic City nightlife. Celebrity sightings, special DJ's, the gorgeous Casbah club dancers rock the Casbah. Great music and a rockin' atmosphere makes Casbah the place to kick it on weekends! Call for hours.

Over the past few months my co-workers and I have done very little other than labor over Edge Magazine. Like expectant parents, we spent a lot of time making plans, picking names and preparing for the arrival of our 'new baby.' I wondered… would she be pretty? Intelligent? Popular? Knowing that first impressions are crucial, I struggled over each editorial decision made for this premier edition. The Edge staff did tons of research and attempted to channel our inner psychic abilities to predict what would make a successful magazine. We gathered a team of award winning and diversely talented writers, photographers and designers to help us nurture our vision. We hope you’ll be delighted by all the local insights and unexpected goodies packed inside our bundle of joy. Our inspired staff has done what they do best –entertain, inform, report and gossip all about southern New Jersey. Finally, the big day has arrived. Edge Magazine is born! Although all parents think their child is the best and the brightest, I'm sure you'll agree - we've got something special here. In this issue, we invite you to celebrate 25 years of the Atlantic City Restaurant Gala with Jen Miller. Contributing writer Karen Calabrese tempts you to experience the culinary delights of the most passionate chef she knows–Luigi Baretto. Just back from Costa Rica, our staff writer, David Enscoe, shares details and photos of his boys-only fishing trip to a secret island get-away. Back on the home-front, I'll take you trippin' into the clubworld of AC and shine some light on the after dark crowd of the city. And, for all of you Boomers out there, we wrap the whole edition up with a big nostalgic kiss, as Mary Lebeau revisits the past, coaxing you into the depths of the Brigantine Castle. Also included are updates and info on the latest trends in fashion, gizmos and gadgets, high-tech kitchens, wellness and finance. There's sure to be a little something for everyone in this baby. There is truly so much to love about living in South Jersey. From the infinite entertainment possibilities and fine restaurants to the beautiful beaches, fantastic shopping and first-rate healthcare, we are lucky to live in such an incredible area. I'm looking forward to bringing you a piece of all the best the Jersey Shore has to offer. Live on the Edge,
Sherrii Brentari, Editor sbrentari@pressofac.com P.S.
We'd love to find out what you think of our new ‘baby.’ Please send any questions, comments or suggestions directly to me .
