Whether one seeks to get married in pure, rural nature in front of a magnificent mountain scenery, on a lake or in the city in a luxurious hotel, couples will find it all in the DACH region.

So, if you decide to have a wedding here, be sure to know all the local customs that are associated with a wedding. For example, Swiss brides tend to spend their last night as an unmarried woman in their parents’ house where she is woken up by a loud noise like fireworks very early in the morning. This noise not only wakes her up for the special day, it also is said to expel evil spirits.

Another tradition in Germany is to kidnap the bride. This is normally done by best friends.

FREI. ABER NICHT BELIEBIG! Eine freie Trauung bietet Paaren die Möglichkeit, so zu heiraten, wie sie es wollen – ohne Regeln und überholte Konventionen. Dr. Johann-Jakob Wulf ist selbst seit vielen Jahren als Trauredner tätig. Er ist Gründer von Strauß & Fliege, eine der ersten und größten Agenturen für Hochzeitsredner:innen im deutschsprachigen Raum und beantwortet die wichtigsten Fragen rund um das Thema freie Trauung.

Was ist eigentlich eine freie Trauung? „Das ist eine sehr gute und gleichzeitig schwierige Frage, denn eine allgemein gültige Definition für eine freie Trauung gibt es nicht.

Wenn ein Paar in Deutschland rechtskräftig verheiratet sein will, dann muss es auf das Standesamt gehen. Da führt kein Weg dran vorbei. Viele Paare wünschen sich darüber hinaus aber eine ‚feierlichere‘ Zeremonie, um diese Verbindung zu feiern. Das kann z.B. daran liegen, dass nicht alle Gäste mit aufs Amt kommen können oder weil der Amtsbesuch zu ‚bürokratisch‘ wirkt. Dann wäre z.B. die 16 |

kirchliche Trauung ein schöner Rahmen für Paare, die ihre Eheschließung außerdem im Rahmen ihrer Religion feiern möchten. Es gibt aber Paare, die wollen oder können nicht auf Institutionen wie z.B. die Kirche zurückgreifen.

Vielleicht sind sie schlicht nicht religiös oder haben unterschiedliche Religionen. Vielleicht kommen sie aus der queeren Szene, waren bereits verheiratet oder sind es schon und wünschen sich eine Erneuerung. Vielleicht will das Paar an einem ungewöhnlichen Ort heiraten und da steht einfach keine Kirche weit und breit. (lacht) Für alle diese Brautpaare ist eine freie Trauung die Lösung. Sie ist nicht ge-

bunden an Ort und Zeit und generell frei von Vorgaben und Regeln. Ergänzend zum Standesamt bietet sie ein sehr persönliches Zeremoniell, das dem Ja-Wort nochmal eine ganz andere Feierlichkeit verleiht. Sie kann aber auch ohne Standesamt oder sogar währenddessen abgehalten werden. Unsere Trauredner:innen begleiten das Paar übrigens auch zum Standesamt, um dort eine persönliche Traurede zu halten“, sagt Johann.

Und wie bist Du denn auf die Idee gekommen, Trauredner zu werden?

Johann erklärt: „Ich bin 2014 privat von Freunden gebeten worden, deren freie Trauung zu gestalten. Eine totale Überraschung, eine große Ehre, – und eine echte Herausforderung.

Die Art und Weise, wie ich die Zeremonie letztlich gestaltet habe, ist so gut angekommen, dass ich danach viele neue Anfragen bekam.

Das waren dann schnell so viele, dass ich

Wedding Dreams nach und nach weitere Redner:innen in mein Team aufgenommen und geschult habe. Und daraus ist Strauß & Fliege gewachsen. Heute haben wir mehr als 50 Trauredner:innen und begleiten fast 400 Hochzeiten im Jahr. Mir ist aber wichtig zu betonen, dass die Redner:innen - man sieht es schon am Verhältnis - am Ende nur eine Handvoll Trauungen im Jahr machen. Dadurch haben sie immer wieder neu Lust, mit den Paaren zu arbeiten.“

Aber was ist der Vorteil einer freien Trauung? „Vor allem im Vergleich zu einer standesamtlichen Trauung geht es bei einer freien Trauzeremonie vor allem um das Paar und um seine Geschichte. Jede Liebe ist einzigartig und unsere Redner:innen investieren viel Zeit, um das Paar wirklich kennenzulernen und herauszufinden, was genau dieses Paar ausmacht.

Auf dem Standesamt steht letztlich doch der bürokratische Akt im Vordergrund und so engagiert einige Standesbeamt:innen auch sind, getraut wird meist im 20-Minuten Takt. Eine wirklich persönliche Zeremonie ist da einfach nicht möglich. Unsere Trauredner:innen bauen eine echte Verbindung zu ihren Paaren auf und das macht sich in der Rede und der Trauung einfach bemerkbar“, sagt Johann.

Auf die Frage was die Leistungen von Strauß & Fliege sind, antwortet Johann: „Wie gesagt

nehmen uns sehr viel Zeit für unsere Paare.

Daher auch die kleine Anzahl an Trauungen pro Redner:in. Und was kostet eine freie Trauung? „Was die Kosten einer freien Trauung angeht, kann ich leider keine konkrete Zahl nennen.

INDUSTRIAL MEETS LOVE ACHTWERK in Rudersberg, just 40 kilometres from Stuttgart, is not only a location highlight in terms of its architecture, but also thanks to how it can make any event dreams come true. ACHTWERK Events founder, Serdar Vona, comes from a catering background and was looking together with his partner, Timucin Kul, for a permanent location, so they didn’t have to transport their heavy equipment anymore.

The former metal workshop at Daimlerstreet turned out to be the perfect space. So, in 2019, Vona renovated it completely before turning it into ACHTWERK. The impressive, barrier-free clinker brick building measures over ten metres in height at its 40-metre-long glass front, which makes for a vast, light-flooded atmosphere. Das eindrucksvolle, barrierefreie Gebäude aus Klinkerstein ist an der 40 Meter langen Glasfront über zehn Meter hoch, was zu einer sehr weitläufigen, lichtdurchfluteten Atmosphäre beiträgt. Als ‚Off Location‘ bietet das ACHTWERK auf 1.500 Quadratmetern die optimale Spielwiese, um sich kreativ auszutoben und hat dazu noch 100 kostenfreie Parkplätze sowie eine 500 Quadratmeter große Terrasse. Service und Catering kommen direkt von ACHTWERK, sodass man kein Mietpersonal

Augenweide is not a typical bridal fashion store; that is something that already becomes clear when looking at the interior and the atmosphere. But this is even more so due to the service; customers should and can feel comfortable and like themselves – without compromise – when choosing the dress.

Anyone who wears a larger size or is smaller than average, for example, will recall many a nightmare shopping experience, and many bridal stores don’t even have the right dress sizes for them to try on. Augenweide Lana is different, because customers can not only try on different dresses, they will afterwards also 26 |

get a made-to-measure dress according to their individual needs and wishes.

“It is important that every bride gets the dress she really wants. The same is true for evening dresses,” says co-founder and manager Lana Paustian. Early on, Lana developed a sense for fashion, and can now look back on three decades of sales experience. Her customers today profit from precisely that experience.

Often enough, brides come to the store with a picture or a rough idea and can then at first try on some dresses to get a feeling of which

cut will fit them. “This way, we develop a basis: form, volume and neckline,” says Lana. “Then we’ll try fabrics.” The shop has some samples to check out in this instance, too. “But above all, we try it out by using the available dresses.”

A designer will then work with the bride to make some drafts until the perfect dress is found – no matter if white or in colour, with lace or pearls, or even a dress a bride has only ever seen in her dreams.

“One also doesn’t have to be afraid of the prices,” says Lana. “We can adjust to every budget.” The cheapest model starts at 1,300 Euros and for this, brides will get a unique dress that nobody else has. Oft kommen Bräute bereits mit einem Foto oder einer groben Idee ins Geschäft und dann können Sie zunächst einige Ausstellungsmodelle anprobieren, um ein Gefühl dafür zu bekommen, welcher Schnitt ihnen beispielsweise steht. „So entwickeln wir das Grundgerüst: Form, Volumen, Ausschnitt“, sagt Lana. „Dann testen wir die Stoffe.“ Dafür hat das Geschäft einige Musterstoffe vorliegen. „Vor allem aber testen wir anhand der vorliegenden Kleider, da sieht man das am besten.“ Eine festangestellte Designerin arbeitet dann gemeinsam mit der Braut so lange an einem Entwurf, bis das perfekte Kleid gefunden ist – ganz egal ob in weiß oder Farbe, mit Spitze oder Perlensticker, oder ein Kleid, das die Braut bisher nur im Traum gesehen hat. „Preislich braucht man auch keine Angst vor uns zu haben“, sagt Lana. „Wir passen uns

BALIK is a curiosity. Who would come up with the idea of building a salmon smokehouse in an old farmhouse in Ebersol in the foothill of the Swiss Alps, where there is neither an ocean nor salmon in sight for miles? That would be actor and director Hans Gerd Kübel and his partner Martin Klöti.

BALIK ist ein Kuriosum. Wer kommt auf die Idee in einem alten Bauernhaus im idyllischen Ebersol in den Schweizer Voralpen, wo weit und breit kein Meer und kein Lachs in Sicht ist, eine Lachsräucherei zu bauen? Die Antwort: Schauspieler und Regisseur Hans Gerd Kübel und sein Partner Martin Klöti.

It was a genuine stroke of luck that Kübel met Israel Kaplan, the grandson of a well-known salmon master-smoker from Riga while on a guest performance in Berlin. Together, they developed the vision to continue the family smokery tradition.

When it comes to the sweeter aspects of life, the ‘Schoggi’ professionals from Bilten in eastern Switzerland are exactly the right people to speak to. For three generations, the Swiss family business has been dedicated to the creation of exceptional moments of culinary pleasure.

Chief marketing officer Patrick Farinato describes what makes Läderach’s chocolate truly special: “We want to inspire and promote the passion for fresh, high-quality chocolate. The quality and taste of chocolate, of course, depends on the quality of the raw materials, which we select with great care.

Another crucial factor, however, is Elias Läderach, the creative head of the company and creator of some superb chocolate works of art. Not only was the World Chocolate Master 2018 the first Swiss person to win this title, he also impressed the critical jurors in five other categories. Two of the award-winning creations, the Master Bonbon Mandarine and Master Tablet Caramel, are now available in stores. In his opinion, what truly distinguishes his chocolate creations beyond their quality and freshness?

“We have a lot of fun creating new things, we try out a lot. We believe in honest craftsmanship and work with a lot of passion for our chocolate,” says Läderach. “And we manufacture every piece by hand. This also makes our products exceptionally special.”

Those who want to try the chocolate are in good hands at Läderach, as Farinato and Läderach stress: “Our concept FrischSchoggi has been copied often, but has never been matched. The concept is, effectively, the scale of our range. We offer flavours such as dark raspberry, whole milk classic, macadamia and many more (there are 25 varieties!). All are available in the shops as large bars, and customers can have a piece of their own choice broken off. This way, they can test the entire scope of our assortment.”

DISCOVER GERMANY: What does ‘home’ mean to you?

Zsá Zsá: Family and friends. For me, home means feeling good and a feeling of security and trust.

issues, love, attitude and trauma. Musically, you could call the genre ‘hyperpop’, but actually it’s a journey through all the genres that have inspired me over the past few years. It has a bit of everything and is still very unique.

DISCOVER GERMANY: Where is your favourite place in the world?

DISCOVER GERMANY: What are your selfwritten pieces inspired by?

Zsá Zsá: I actually don’t have a favourite place. I’ve lived in three countries and over six different cities, all of which I share a connection with, but to this day Berlin is where I can breathe the most and feel safe.

Zsá Zsá: By my life. Especially on the Harmony EP, everything is based on my life. I always write impulsively from my emotions. I rarely sit down and say, “Well, I’m going to write now”.

It’s quite instinctive. I’ve never really written a song in the studio before. I worked on the song in the studio, but the basics mostly come to me at home when I’m playing an instrument or building loops in Logic.

DISCOVER GERMANY: How did you get into music? How did that develop?

Zsá Zsá: Both of my parents were musicians, so music has been an important factor throughout my life. I’ve always played instruments and then at some point was part of a school band. That’s how I started writing songs and I just never stopped until I was at the point of really wanting or having to share my songs. That may sound dramatic, but I couldn’t go on without finally appreciating my music myself and giving my art the space in my life or finally acknowledging the space it actually always had.

DISCOVER GERMANY: Congratulations on the release of Harmony! How would you describe the sound of the EP? Zsá Zsá: Thank you so much! At its core, the Harmony EP is an urban tale of life, modern

Zsá Zsá: Pull Up Flex is about striving for a better life. About being streetsmart, about the moments when you have few options and still manage to stand behind yourself and master it.

DISCOVER GERMANY: Actress AND singer – for many this is still unimaginable. How do you counter that?

Zsá Zsá: I had this problem myself when I was younger. But what should you do?

That’s my form of expression, my art. I can’t just put the voice out because people still have a problem with that. I love these two

professions so much and I think there is absolutely no reason to limit yourself these days. When you feel something and want to express something, no matter which way, who’s to tell you that you can’t? That would be a very sad, uninspired world to live in.

DISCOVER GERMANY: You have already worked as an actress in a number of productions. Which shoot do you remember most fondly and why?

Zsá Zsá: Probably Gladbeck, a film about the hostage drama in the ‘80s. The shoot was incredibly intensive, because I feel it is about a very important story that, in addition to the dramatic events, also contains a lot that is important for our current society to feel and question. It was important to tell these stories, and to do justice to the case and the real people involved. It was a great responsibility and also a great honour to be able to tell people about this case.

Zsá Zsá: A more open, loving world, more empathy and compassion. A life centred around art.

THE MÜRITZEUM

Racy UFO or ancient ship? Clad in charred larch wood, visible from afar, the ‘House of 1,000 Lakes’ proudly towers at the edge of Waren’s Old Town. “We often hear that the building by its form and size alone arouses curiosity,” relates Karin Franz, marketing manager at the Müritzeum.

‘Experience Nature – Understand Nature’ is the motto of the Nature Discovery Centre on the Müritz, northern Germany’s largest inland lake in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The starting point of an expedition through the House of 1,000 Lakes is the forum. the visitors. In between, in an aquarium two storeys high, a shimmering shoal of over 500 whitefish greets the visitors and entices them to a dip into the underwater world. It’s a welcome that whets the appetite for more.

In other small and large, near-natural designed aquariums, the curators of the Müritzeum present aquatic diversity. “In addition to more than 50 fish species, there are also crayfish, terrapins, mussels, snails and water plants.

Some of the animals, however, prefer hiding places which they only leave occasionally. Or, they are carefully camouflaged and almost impossible to spot. So, besides curiosity, one should definitely bring with them some time.

But it’s worth the wait!” promises Franz.

“It’s a little bit easier to marvel at the animal preparations in the interactive exhibition rooms. You can even listen to them in the concert hall of the Bird Life-theme world,” enthuses the marketing expert. Here, whitetailed eagles, cranes etc. can also be admired in their natural size. The tour continues in the Forest-theme room, where visitors meet a 1,000-year-old tree giant and tiniest forest dwellers of ancient beech forests. By crossing a ‘mighty glacier’, visitors learn in a journey through time how these gigantic masses of ice formed the landscape and how man impacted his environment in the past. After the visit, guests can enjoy nature on the circular trail around the idyllic Herrensee in the museum garden.

und bezaubern Naturaufnahmen. Sie zeigen die Vielfalt der Natur in den Facetten der vier Jahreszeiten. Dazwischen begrüßt ein silbrig glänzender Schwarm von über 500 Maränen in einem zwei Etagen hohen Aquarium den Gast und lockt zum Abtauchen in die Unterwasserwelt. Eine Begrüßung, die Lust auf mehr macht!

In weiteren kleinen und großen, naturnah gestalteten Aquarien präsentieren die Kuratoren des Müritzeums die Gewässervielfalt. „In den Aquarien sind mehr als 50 Fischarten, Krebse, Sumpfschildkröten, Muscheln, Schnecken und Wasserpflanzen zu beobachten. Einige der Tiere bevorzugen allerdings Verstecke, die sie lediglich hin und wieder verlassen. Oder sie sind wegen ihrer guten Tarnung fast nicht zu erkennen. auch Zeit mitbringen. Aber das Warten lohnt sich!”, verspricht Franz. „Etwas einfacher lassen sich unsere Tierpräparate in den interaktiven Themenräumen bestaunen. Im Konzertsaal der Vogelwelt kann man sie sogar belauschen”, schwärmt die Marketingfachfrau. Daneben beeindrucken Seeadler, Kranich und Co. mit ihrer Größe.

Weiter auf Streifzug durch den Lebensraum Wald begegnet man unter anderem einem 1000-jährigen Baumgiganten und winzigsten Waldbewohnern uralter Buchenwälder. Beim Durchqueren eines ‚mächtigen Gletschers’ erfährt man in einer Zeitreise, wie diese gigantischen Eismassen die Landschaft formten und wie der Mensch seine Umwelt in vergangenen Zeiten beeinflusste. Natur genießen, kann man anschließend auf dem Rundweg um den idyllischen Herrensee im Museumsgarten.

EINE LIEBESERKLÄRUNG AN DIE UNTERWASSERWELT DER MEERE

Reopened in 2008 in an impressive new museum, the OZEANEUM Stralsund, with its gigantic underwater worlds, attracts about half a million visitors each year. The natural history museum makes it possible to explore different underwater worlds – from the Stralsund harbour to the deep Atlantic Ocean.

“For more than 70 years, the German Oceanographic Museum has been dedicated to the beauty and protection of the oceans with their unique flora and fauna,” says Almut Neumeister, member of the communications team. This includes research projects and cooperation with, among others, the WWF and the Konsortium Deutsche Meeresforschung.

„Das Deutsche Meeresmuseum widmet sich bereits seit 70 Jahren auf breit gefächerte Weise der Schönheit und dem Schutz der Meere mit seiner Flora und Fauna“, sagt Almut Neumeister von der Stabsstelle Kommunikation & Marketing. Dazu gehören Forschungsprojekte und Kooperationen unter anderem mit dem WWF und dem Konsortium Deutsche Meeresforschung.

One particular highlight is the tunnel Aquarium ‘Heligoland’, home to monkfish, cod and catfish. In the largest aquarium, the ‘Open Atlantic’, large shoals, sharks and rays swim around the replica of a 11-metre-long shipwreck, and the roof terrace of the building is home to Humboldt penguins. Thanks to large windows, visitors can actually watch them swim underwater as well. The exhibition 1:1 Giants of the Seas, developed together with Greenpeace, shows full-size whale models, and informs visitors about the endangerment of whales and the measures in place to protect them.

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state government has declared the OZEANEUM a family friendly attraction. A lighthouse with a slide, comfortable beach chairs and exciting play areas await the youngest guests in the adventure area. www.ozeaneum.de 44 |

Without steel, our modern world would look completely different. The voestalpine Stahlwelt exhibition impressively shows in which products steel can be found, and provides detailed background information.

The building’s architecture itself shows the uniqueness of steel: a huge steel rotunda, recreating a steel melting pot and housing the central exhibition, is suspended inside. Adjoining this is the ‘tower’, with many interactive stations. This way, visitors can, for example, use a console to mix their own steel and on their way through the exhibition will also experience steel production through atmospheric sounds.

Immerse Yourself in Medieval Times

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN MEDIEVAL TIMES Wood shatters as the galloping knight’s lance clatters against the U-shaped shield protecting the left side of his mounted opponent’s armoured torso. Onlookers emit gasps and cheers. Almost as an afterthought, appreciative applause ripples through the crowd that’s sitting in the banked arena within the grounds of Kaltenberg Castle.

The loser of the joust momentarily jolts back in his saddle, somehow manages to absorb the impact and recover, then continues riding alongside the barrier that separates opponents. The victor raises his lance, pumps the blunted weapon in the air, and theatrically milks the crowd’s adoration. His face is hidden behind a metal helmet topped by a plume of black and yellow feathers, but it’s easy to imagine the elation.

The skill level of the costume-wearing stunt riders who participate in the Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament is truly impressive.

We’ve already witnessed a rider dressed in a black costume, much like those worn longago by members of the secretive Order of Assassins, stand on the saddle of a galloping horse. With his mount’s hooves kicking up chunks of the arena’s all-weather surface, he maintained poise, balance and control of the horse. Seemingly impossibly, he leant sideways, parallel to the ground. Still at full tilt, he sat down, twisted around and rode facing backwards. The crowd roared approvingly.

The 2022 edition of the tournament, known locally as the Kaltenberg Ritterturnier, takes

place over the last three weekends of July.

Like so many of the world’s normally annual mass participation events, the Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament was last held in 2019.

That year was the 40th anniversary of Prince Luitpold of Bavaria first inviting medieval reenactors and members of the public onto his castle’s grounds. In the four intervening decades, the scale and sheer level of spectacle of the tournament grew prodigiously.

Prince Luitpold is a member of the House of Wittelsbach. Between 1180 and 1918 his forebears ruled over Bavaria. By the time his ancestor Ludwig IV was elected as the Holy Roman Emperor, in 1328, tournaments had become a way for knights to demonstrate their martial prowess and win honour in a controlled environment. We can only speculate what the tournament organisers of the Middle Ages might make of Kaltenberg’s

They may have been familiar with the entertainment provided by the jesters and musicians who perform on five stages around the medieval-style village and in the procession that meanders between stalls. At those 150 stalls, artisans demonstrate skills similar to those practised centuries ago in European workshops. That includes jewellers crafting precious metals, potters shaping clay and a blacksmith hammering at an anvil. Their handcrafted wares are offered for sale.

So too, are food and drink. Kaltenberg Castle is the headquarters of the König Ludwig brewery and beer is brewed onsite. It was under the rule of Bavaria’s Duke Wilhelm IV, Prince Luitpold’s ancestor, that the world’s first nationwide beer purity law came into effect. Germany’s modern beer regulations are based on the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot of 1516. Locally brewed beer is served at the castle’s Ritterschwemme restaurant even on dates that the Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament does not take place.

a cold beverage on warm days. On a sultry summer day back in 1946 – the afternoon of 28 July, to be precise – the local weather turned. Like scenes from some unimaginative horror movie, dark clouds converged over Geltendorf. They brought lashing rain, hail and howling wind. A ferocious whirlwind whipped and swirled against the brickwork of the clocktower on St Stephan’s church. It ripped away the distinctive double bulge of the onion dome and dumped it in the priest’s garden. Culturally engaged visitors may wish to view the ornate interior of the restored Baroque church.

Keen skateboarders may question that and point to the grey concrete surface and contoured wooden ramps and jumps of Geltendorf’s skatepark. Anyone who appreciates quirkier landmarks might argue it’s unfair not to list the tiny chapel on the municipality’s northern edge. Pre-booked tickets are priced between €29.95 and €74.95 for the 2022 Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament (ritterturnier.de). The opening evening, on Friday 15 July, termed the Gauklernacht, meaning ‘Jesters’ Night’, is the only of the nine dates of this year’s event which does not feature a tournament show in the arena.

The castle is a five-minute bus or taxi ride northwest of Geltendorf, the western terminus of the S-4 suburban railway line that runs through Munich on its way to Ebersberg. The S-Bahn ride from central Munich takes 44 minutes. According to Tripadvisor, visiting ‘Schloss Kaltenberg’ is the number one thing to do in Geltendorf. Perhaps surprisingly, it’s the only attraction listed.

Geneva – One of the Most Entrepreneur-Friendly Cities in the World

With around 200,000 inhabitants in its city, Geneva is the second-biggest city in Switzerland after Zurich. With its beautiful backdrop of the Alps and Jura mountains, it also is home to the Red Cross and Europe’s United Nations headquarters. In fact, it has the highest number of international organisations in the world and has made a name for itself as a global diplomacy and financial hub.

The international face of the city is also reflected in its multiculturality. While around 60.83 per cent of Geneva’s population is made up of Swiss people, 39.2 per cent are non-nationals, consisting of mainly Portuguese, French, Italian and Spanish nationals. Of non-EU and EFTA migrants, the largest groups come from the USA, Russia, Brazil, Kosovo, Turkey, former Yugoslavia, India, as well as Morocco.

French is the predominantly spoken language in Geneva, but most people speak at least one other language. A quarter of Geneva’s inhabitants, for example, also speak English.

including annual GDP growth, corruption levels, financial stability, GFCI rankings and more.

The Swiss city of Geneva made it to the top of the ranking for a variety of reasons. While Singapore led the ranking, Geneva came sec-

In addition to this, Geneva’s annual GDP growth is -2.4 per cent and Switzerland is low risk for international trade.

Ian Wright, CEO and founder of Compare my Jet, explains: “With the current popularity of remote working, many entrepreneurs decide to take their business activities to the most attractive locations. It is vital for business owners to consider the benefits and drawbacks of a place to live and work and avoid locations with high corruption rate and high risk for international business.”

Assessing 20 cities all over the world, the new research also included Amsterdam in third place, which has a relatively high economic freedom score of 77, and Frankfurt, which is the fourth-least corrupt city in the analysis. The fifth-best city for entrepreneurs to live and work in is New York.

On the other hand, the five least entrepreneur-friendly cities in the world, according to the research, are Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai and Paris. As the only city in the research to be considered a sensitive risk city for international business, Hong Kong is the least supportive of entrepreneurial pursuits. The Chinese special administrative region also has the highest new business density figure of all the countries in our analysis, with 19.22.

Ranking slightly better than Hong Kong are Shenzhen and Beijing. Country-wide, China is a medium-risk country for international business and has an index of economic freedom score of 58, the lowest level out of all the countries researched.

GLOBAL AND LOCAL While Geneva has a global outlook and an international feel, you can still find corners that make it seem like you’re in a small town with a local charm. Many argue it is the perfect mix. In regards to being a small business owner or entrepreneur, Switzerland as a whole has business-friendly legislation, political stability and great infrastructure. Even better: it’s relatively quick and easy for nonSwiss nationals to set up a company in the country.

A study, conducted by NimbleFins in 2020, found that Switzerland is the third-best European country for start-ups by looking at different factors such as general economic health, cost of doing business, labour-force quality, as well as the business environment.

Only Germany and the UK were better locations to found a new business.

While life is known to not be cheap in Switzerland, the high costs of living and doing business are outweighed by many other positive factors. Entrepreneurs that seek a bustling financial and diplomatic centre, while looking for a great cultural scene and impressive untouched nature in close proximity, can’t really go wrong with Geneva.

Heute präsentiert es sich in neuem stilvollem Glanz und auch gleich mit einem neuen Namen: Pavillon im Park.

Schloss Mittersill is a true insider tip for Alp enthusiasts who, after a trip into the mountains, might want to relax in an extra-special environment. “The castle has ten individually decorated suites, whose name patron is a former hotel guest,” says hotel director Stephan Kohnke. The Coco Chanel suite, for example, has a private outdoor sauna in the old castle tower, as well as a freestanding bathtub with a view. The traditional hunting room, on the other hand, is furnished with pieces from the 19th century and original wooden floors and wall panels, inviting guests for a journey into the past. “In the whole house we put great emphasis on small details,” says Kohnke about the 54 rooms and suites.

Gut gepflegt, digital vernetzt, leicht erreichbar und in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Bahnhof gelegen, ist der Campingplatz Mühleye im Walliser Visp der perfekte Ausgangspunkt für spannende, erholsame oder, je nach Wunsch, eben auch aktive Auszeiten. „Also mir fallen gleich mehrere Gründe ein, warum sich Gäste bei uns einbuchen sollten”, lacht Helga Hreinsdottir, die Betriebsleiterin des Campingplatzes. „Alles in allem ist Mühleye einfach ein cooler Tipp für coole Trips! Zunächst einmal liegen die Viertausender Gipfel praktisch direkt vor unserer Haustür, wodurch Mühleye der perfekte Ausgangspunkt für Wanderungen in die wunderschöne Alpenlandschaft ist. Das Schwimmbad des Campingplatzes bringt Sportfans, aber auch Familien und Kindern an heißen Sommertagen die dringend benötigte Abkühlung. Im 50-Meter-Becken schwimmen die Erwachsenen ihre Bahnen, während sich die Kinder auf der Rutschbahn (45 Meter lang!), dem Sprungturm, bei den Wasserfontainen oder im Kinderbecken nach Herzenslust austoben können. Auf der großen Liegewiese, auf der ausladende Bäume genügend Schutz vor der Sonne bieten, kann man die Seele baumeln lassen. Beim Schwimmen oder Toben verlorengegangene Energie werden ganz einfach im Restaurant aufgeladen. Hier stellen

sich dann die Fragen: Pizza oder Paella? Grillgemüse oder Raclette? Mit seinen frischen und gesunden Speisen, mit knackigen Salaten, Frappès und leckeren Cocktails und Eisbechern ist das Restaurant der perfekte Rahmen für einen gelungenen Sommerurlaubstag.

Haben Sie eigentlich einen Lieblingsplatz oder einen Tipp für die Gäste? „Oh ja, den habe ich. Die Moosalp auf 2.048 Metern ist zwar nicht unbedingt ein Geheimtipp, aber definitiv einen Besuch wert. Sie ist bequem mit dem Bus erreichbar, so dass beispielsweise auch ältere Gäste oder Gäste mit kleineren Kindern sie gut erreichen können. Einmal oben angekommen, wartet nicht nur eine wunderschöne Aussicht und eine gemütliche Sonnenterrasse, sondern auch ein Restaurant mit vielen leckeren Spezialitäten auf die hungrigen Gäste.

Grundlage seiner Arbeit ist das Konzept der Allgemeinen Beratung, Psychotherapie und Seelsorge ABPS® der BTS (Biblisch Therapeutische Seelsorge). „Das Modell der ABPS geht von einem ganzheitlichen Menschenbild aus. Dieses umfasst Körper (Soma), Geist (Pneuma) und Psyche (Psyche), die sich ihrerseits gegenseitig bedingen und in ihrer Gesamtheit als Seele (Nefesh) bezeichnet werden.“ Einer seiner Schwerpunkt liegt heute in der MPU-Beratung, das heißt der MedizinischPsychologischen Untersuchung für Punktesünder, Suchtkrake und Personen, die mit mehr als 1,6 Promille im Blut erwischt werden. „Zu unseren Leistungen gehört die Aufarbeitung des Delikts, das Problembe76 |

Darüber hinaus ist Dümpert in der Berufsberatung und im Coaching tätig. „Unsere Arbeitswelt ändert sich rasant. Alte Berufe verschwinden und neue entstehen“, sagt Andreas Dümpert. „Es gibt viele Personen, die nicht mehr mit ihrem jetzigen Job zufrieden sind und Hilfe bei der Neuorientierung benötigen.“ So unterstützt der Coach Berufssuchende, angehende Auszubildende und Hochschulabsolventen bei der Berufswahl oder der Neuorientierung. Für Berufssuchende geht es darum den Berufswunsch mit der beruflichen Realität zu verbinden, die richtigen Qualifikationen zu erlangen und gegebenenfalls Sozialkompetenzen und Motivation zu verbessern. Auf der anderen Seite

unterstützt Dümpert aber auch Unternehmen dabei, das richtige Anforderungsprofil für Jobs zu erstellen und Bewerber hinsichtlich ihrer Fähigkeiten im Assessment Center zu überprüfen. Darüber hinaus bietet er Hilfe bei Streitfragen im Unternehmen – Stichwort ist hier die Mediation.

In die Beratung ist Andreas Dümpert über einen Umweg gekommen: Ursprünglich arbeitete er im Verwaltungsbereich und begann dann im Zuge einer beruflichen Veränderung Seminare zu Themen wie DemenzBeratung – ein weiterer Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit – oder Jobcoaching zu belegen. „Ich hatte dann schon Klienten, wollte aber meinen Glauben mit die die Arbeit integrieren.

Das ist mir mit dem Start meiner Ausbildung zum Therapeutisch-Beratenden-Seelsorger (Lebens- und Sozialberater) bei der BTS gelungen. Obwohl die Klienten keine Christen sind, kommt ihnen diese Art der Beratung zugute“, erzählt Dümpert. THE GEHRY BUILDINGS IN DÜSSELDORF Visitors can look forward to three beautifully crooked buildings in Düsseldorf’s media harbour. Designed by the Canadian-American architect Frank O. Gehry, who is known for his deconstructionist architectural style, the buildings are situated on the Rhine and are made out of different materials. The left building is smoothly plastered, the right one has a brick façade, and the small tower in the middle is covered with silver stainless steel sheets. Since its completion in 1999, the buildings have been a famous landmark of Düsseldorf.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARY IN COTTBUS Another rather distinctive building can be found in Cottbus: the information, communication and media centre of the the city’s Technical University. With a height of 32 metres and its curved shape, it is a real eye-catcher. The steel construction which is surrounded by a double glass façade, was designed by the Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron.

THE ‘WALDSPIRALE’ IN DARMSTADT What looks like it could be placed in Barcelona instead, can be found in Darmstadt.

Here, the ‘Waldspirale’, a residential building complex, combines art and architecture in a colourful and playful way. Designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, in collaboration with the architects Josef Krawina, Peter Pelikan and Heinz M. Springmann, the building comprises 105 flats and 12 levels. It does not have any right angles and no straight lines. Colourful pillars, spirals and onion domes characterise the building.

The most recent example of the architects’ work is the energy car park Neckarpark in Stuttgart. The car park is not only the starting point for the new city quarter Neckarpark, but also secures its energy supply. Next to parking spaces for cars and bicycles, it has a waste heat-based powerhouse. Another innovation is the multilayered façade, which has been extensively planted and allows natural ventilation, as well as noise and anti-glare protection.

In addition to implementing new materials, a prominent part of the project development at K2 is the computerassisted draft, facilitating early-stage optimisation and a short building process.

Founded in the late ‘90s by Joachim Kranendonck and Klaus Kampmann in Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Architekten K2 GmbH took the step into autonomy with the idea of conquering the industrial buildings sector – a niche that hitherto only few architects had devoted themselves to: “Architec-

ture was not viewed as a cultural term with regard to jobs and production back then.” One of the first big clients was the Lufthansa AG, for whom the office creates airport lounges throughout the world. With additional branches in Wiesbaden and Cologne, the team nowadays consists of around 40 employees.

For the near future, Architekten K2 GmbH will further develop their successful new concepts, with a special focus on Hybrid Work solutions.

Right now, the team is working on a pioneering laboratory building for a renowned company, as well as a research airport building, where energy-efficient transport drones will be developed and tested: “The big challenge lies in the development of autonomous, sustainable concepts reaching far beyond the current standards. Neben der Gestaltung der Gebäude selbst rückt für die Architekten mehr und mehr auch das Umfeld in den Vordergrund – zum Beispiel die Übersetzung gestalterischer Vorzüge des traditionellen Hochschulcampus auf die Außenflächen von Verwaltungs- und Produktionsstätten als signifikante Verbesserung der Qualität des Arbeits-/Lebensumfeldes. Schwerpunkte liegen zudem auf der Verwendung neuer Materialien sowie dem rechnergestützten Entwurf, mit der Zielsetzung frühzeitiger Optimierungen und kurzer Bauprozesse.

CONTINUING TO BUILD THE CITY – FOUR NEW BUILDINGS BY STEFAN FORSTER IN FRANKFURT

The design is based on the idea of the European City with subdivided, slightly varying yet identifiable individual buildings. The new buildings take on certain design aspects of the existing structures, such as the eaves’ height and the middle gable motif. The two existing middle buildings were carefully and thoroughly refurbished and complemented by two six-storied new structures. In total, 35 apartments were realised.

The prominent new corner building draws inspiration in both materiality and formal language from the nearby former Großmarkthalle monument by Martin Elsaesser – a listed classic modern building complex now incorporated into the European central bank.

Both the reddish clinker brick and the horizontal bay window design with muntin windows refer to the 1928 expressionist Martin Elsaesser architecture. The base level offers space for a street-side cafe.

With its rounded balconies and horizontal cornice bands, the new building to the right creates a subtle transition to contemporary architecture. The residential project thus

Frankfurt-based architect Stefan Forster and his team have been active in residential architecture for more than 30 years – from high-end apartments to economically affordable rental space through to entire city blocks. To this end, architecture for him means more than just one individual building: “A livable city will accommodate the largest possible variety of life models”.

WEITERBAUEN AN DER STADT – VIER NEUE WOHNHÄUSER VON STEFAN FORSTER IN FRANKFURT Der Frankfurter Architekt Stefan Forster und sein Team widmen sich seit über 30 Jahren dem städtischen Wohnungsbau – vom High-end Apartment über bezahlbare Mietwohnungen bis hin zu ganzen Wohnblocks. Dabei umfasst Architektur für ihn mehr als das einzelne Haus: „Eine lebenswerte Stadt bietet Platz für möglichst viele, unterschiedliche Lebensmodelle.“

Das kürzlich fertiggestellte Projekt Sonnemannstraße verkörpert den Anspruch des Büros Stefan Forster exemplarisch. Direkt gegenüber dem imposanten Hochhaus der Europäischen Zentralbank in Frankfurt am Main gelegen, umfasst es vier Wohnhäuser innerhalb eines gründerzeitlichen Straßenblocks.

Dem Entwurf liegt der Gedanke der europäischen Stadt mit parzellierten, immer etwas anders gestalteten und zugleich identifizierbaren Einzelhäusern zugrunde. So übernehmen die Neubauten etwa die Traufhöhe der Altbauten und das Motiv des Mittelgiebels. Die beiden bestehenden Altbauten wurden aufwändig saniert und zu beiden Seiten durch sechsgeschossige Neubauten ergänzt. Insgesamt sind 35 hochwertige Apartments entstanden.

Das prominente Eckgebäude lehnt sich in Materialität und Formensprache bewusst an

die ehemalige Großmarkthalle von Martin Elsaesser an – ein 1928 errichteter Monumentalbau der klassischen Moderne, der heute Bestandteil der Europäischen Zentralbank ist.

Sowohl der rötlich-braune Klinker als auch der horizontal gegliederte Erker mit seinen Sprossenfenstern beziehen sich auf die expressionistische Architektur Martin Elsaessers. Die Sockelzone bietet Raum für ein Straßencafé.

Stefan Forster und sein Team stehen nicht nur für gestalterische Vielfalt im städtischen Wohnungsbau. Zunehmend entwickelt das Büro umfassende Ideen für die Planung urbaner Quartiere, die Antworten auf grundlegende Zukunftsfragen der Stadtplanung geben. Damit möchte das Büro einen Beitrag zu einer nachhaltigen, autarken und verkehrsberuhigten, aber gleichwohl bezahlbaren Stadtentwicklung leisten, die soziale Heterogenität mit lebenswerten Stadträumen verbindet. Stefan Forster, der sich selbst gern auf dem Fahrrad durch die Stadt bewegt, formuliert es so: „Wir müssen die Straße den Menschen zurückgeben. Das wäre ein Beitrag zur Lebensqualität.“ www.sfa.de

Der zweite Neubau zur Rechten schlägt mit seinen abgerundeten Erkern und den horizontalen Gesimsbändern den Bogen zur Gegenwart. Die Wohnhäuser in der Sonnemannstraße zählen somit zu den wenigen Architekturprojekten, die Bezüge zu unterschiedlichen Phasen der europäischen Stadtgeschichte aufweisen und einen Bogen vom Historismus der Gründerzeit über die klassische Moderne bis hin zur zeitgenössischen Architektur schlagen.

THINKING SPACE – ARCHITECTS REVOLUTIONISING THE NATURE OF EDUCATION

Innovative school buildings following an open learning principle are a core mission at the Cologne based office: “Nothing in our society is more outdated than our school system. Thinking about it, regarding the learning spaces, nothing has really changed since the Imperial era.”

Recent challenges, not least during the pandemic years, have already indicated the need for a radical change in the way of teaching and learning. The BAN (Bildungslandschaft Altstadt-Nord) school project, situated in Cologne’s old town, picks up on this notion and was largely facilitated by the ‘Montag Stiftung Jugend und Gesellschaft’ foundation.

As opposed to traditional classroom learning in an atmosphere of competition between the school systems stands the idea of an aggregation of know-how in the sense of ‘crowd thinking’. Therefore, the guiding design prin86 |

ciple for the Cologne project was to bundle the existing institutions into a complete ‘educational necklace’ for all age groups.

Synergistic usage made it possible to plan and build in a space-, cost- and resourceefficient way. A large, accumulated volume of spaces was thus reduced to a minimum in building volume, integrated with sensibility and an eye for detail into the surrounding borough and public park area. Seven existing institutions, from day nursery through to high school, and from youth centre to night school, were combined to a whole new educational landscape. The project recently won both the KAP Cologne architectural prize and the Architekturpreis NRW 2021, and is shortlisted for the NIKE BDA-Architekturpreis.

At present, gernot schulz : architektur are planning a school for 1,700 pupils in Langenhagen. And in Weimar, again in liaison

with the Montag foundation, as well as the IBA Thuringia, a school building with a nod to the Bauhaus modular box idea is in the making, which the office calls “possibly the most revolutionary school building within the Open Source principle”.

Wenn wir darüber nachdenken, hat sich – zumindest was die Lernräume angeht – seit der Kaiserzeit wenig geändert.“ Nicht zuletzt in den Pandemie-Jahren deutlich geworden, bedarf es derzeit unbestreitbar einer grundsätzlichen sowie umfassenden Schulreform, die neue Wege des Lehrens und Lernens ermöglicht. Das Projekt BAN (Bildungslandschaft Altstadt-Nord) in der Kölner Altstadt greift diesen Gedanken nachhaltig auf und wurde in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Montag Stiftung Jugend und Gesellschaft entwickelt.

Im Gegenzug zur herkömmlichen, frontal ausgelegten Form des Lernens in einer Atmosphäre von Konkurrenz und Wettbewerb zwischen den Schulsystemen steht der Gedanke der Aggregation des Wissens im Sinne des ‚Crowd Thinking‘. Das führende Designprinzip für das Kölner Projekt war deshalb die Bündelung verschiedener vorhandener Institutionen zu einer kompletten ‚Bildungskette‘ für alle Altersgruppen.

Synergetische Nutzung der Räume ermöglichte eine raum-, kosten- und ressourcenschonende Art der Planung und des Bauens.

Ein großes, akkumuliertes Bauvolumen wurde auf diese Weise minimalisiert und sensibel in das Viertel und den öffentlichen Park integriert. Sieben bestehende Institutionen von Kita bis Gymnasium, vom Jugendzent-

rum bis zur Abendschule wurden so Teil einer umfassenden, offenen Bildungslandschaft.

Das Projekt gewann kürzlich den Kölner Architekturpreis KAP, den Architekturpreis NRW 2021 und ist in der engeren Wahl für den BDA Architekturpreise Nike.

Auch die Zukunft gilt bei gernot schulz : architektur im Besonderen dem Schulbau: Derzeit plant das Büro eine Schule für 1.700 Schüler in Langenhagen. Außerdem wird in Weimar, wiederum in Zusammenarbeit mit der Montag Stiftung sowie der IBA Thüringen, in Anlehnung an das Baukastenprinzip der BauhausÄra der „wohl revolutionärste Schulbau der Schulbau Open Source” entwickelt.

So entstehen offene Lernlandschaften, in der die Architektur flexibel parallel zu Lehrern und Eltern als dritter Pädagoge auf die Anforderungen des Unterrichts reagieren kann. www.gernotschulzarchitektur.de

SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE WITH HIGH DESIGN ASPIRATIONS The roof construction of the Luxembourg National Library is a good example for a sustainable design as it is made from wood – a renewable resource. An intelligent system of openings in the façade additionally allows the building to cool down in the early morn-

ing hours of warm summer days, so that the building does not need an environmentally harmful and energy guzzling air conditioning system.

“In the end, the programmatic, the technical and the sustainable simply and elegantly have to come together as architecture, a spatiality with a recognisable and unique character,” the architects say regarding the requirements for a modern, sustainable architecture. Of course, the aesthetic shouldn’t be forgotten either, like the example of the Luxembourg National Library shows. “The project demonstrates its purpose by articulating its architectural elements; on the inside ascending terraces and galleries offer a fantastic reading and learning experience.”

Julia B. Bolles-Wilson is originally from Münster and initially received an architecture diploma in Karlsruhe before moving to London for postgraduate studies. There, she taught at the Chelsea School of Art, followed by a professorship in Münster. Since 2022, she has been President of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. Peter L. Wilson is originally from Australia and, after architectural studies in Melbourne, moved to London as well, where he worked as professor at the AA School of Architecture. Visiting professorships in Berlin, Mendrisio and Edinburg followed, as well as the Gold Medal from the Australian institute of Architects and an honorary Doctor title in Melbourne. Since 2019, he has been honorary citizen of Korça in Albania, where the architectural office developed a masterplan for the city centre combining a choreography of new buildings and public spaces with the city’s existing historic complexity. The interplay of two different architecture schools and cultural regions – the AngloSaxon and the middle-European – is another characteristic of BOLLES+WILSON. “It might not be exaggerated if we call ourselves the architects for the exceptional; maybe an interesting side-effect of this intercultural cooperation,” says Bolles-Wilson. “The Anglo-Saxon sensibility is empiric, not dogmatic; the way of working more experimentally.

Beyond that, an Australian spatial sensitivity is shaped by a sublime and endless landscape.” The German mentality and way of working stands in clear contrast to this: “A middle-European sensitivity is rational, systemic and less poetic, and is significantly more shaped by the classical modernism of the 20th century,” the architects explain.

“This combination – often heavily discussed – is in fact for us the most interesting.”

Julia B. Bolles-Wilson stammt aus Münster und machte zunächst ihr Architektur-Diplom in Karlsruhe, bevor sie für ein Postgraduate Studium nach London wechselte. Dort unterrichtete sie an der Chelsea School of Art, gefolgt von einer Professur in Münster.

Seit 2019 ist er Ehrenbürger der Stadt Korça in Albanien, wo das Architekturbüro einen Masterplan für das Stadtzentrum entwickelte, das eine Choreographie neuer Gebäude und öffentlicher Räume mit der bestehenden Komplexität der Stadt verbindet. Unter anderem waren BOLLES+WILSON auch für das Ikonenmuseum in der Stadt verantwortlich.

Die Anerkennung des kulturellen und urbanen Kontexts ist wichtiger Bestandteil der Unternehmensphilosophie.

The plagiarism hunter When did you last come across the term ‘plagiarism hunter’ in English? Your answer might well be never. It’s not something that seems to be a thing in the English-speaking world. Cue another German-language (culture) curiosity, because ‘Plagiatsjäger’ is a word we’re very familiar with. It’s close to a profession; people who scour academic and other publications for plagiarism. And sometimes it feels that no week goes by without yet another prominent case of plagiarism in the media.

Time and again, high-profile cases have over the years even led to German government ministers resigning (imagine that in the UK, ha).

People with political power seem to be popular prey for plagiarism hunters and there are numerous examples of politicians stumbling over wrong or rather ‘forgotten’ citations and similar academic writing mishaps. In February 2011, accusations of plagiarism in the PhD dissertation of Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, then Minister of Defence, were made public, and – following a very German outrage involving criticism from academics, legal scholars and politicians – Guttenberg 98 |

announced his resignation in May of that year. In 2013, Annette Schavan, Minister of Education and Research (the irony), resigned following the revocation of her PhD because of plagiarism. In 2021, Family Minister Franziska Giffey resigned after allegations of plagiarism for her dissertation which was submitted in 2010. And even Germany’s current Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has been under attack during last year’s campaigns for the federal election in September when she was accused of ‘copy and pasting’ in a book she published in 2021 as a manifest of her political beliefs and agenda.

I could go on, including examples from Austria, another country which, based on my research, is quite keen on a bit of hunting for plagiarism, and is, in fact, home to a communications professor who has been called by the New York Times “the ‘plagiarism hunter’ terrorising the German-speaking world”. But I’ll leave it for you to make up your mind about the ‘Plagiatsjäger’ concept. And the importance that is quite clearly attached to doctor titles and getting your footnotes right in the DACH region…
