| South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation | SUMMER IN THE GARDEN

And boy, did it ever!

2

As the exhibit came to a close this past Mother’s Day weekend, we were in awe of the record breaking numbers. Over 45,000 visitors came through the gates between February 19 and May 8. On Sunday, May 8 alone, over 1,700 people visited the Garden. Many more became members, donors and converts to the beauty and wonder a botanic garden can hold. Thousands learned what is possible when large open pits created from mining eventually became a landfill – and through creativity and determination – resulted in 87-acres of a thriving and lush botanic garden. A true of example of what happens when ingenuity meets opportunity. We could not have accomplished the feats of hosting an exhibit of this magnitude if it weren’t for the support of our sponsors, donors, staff members and volunteers. It took many planning hours, ideas,

“Nature is SO Cool!” – 10 year old “I’ve lived in the South Bay my whole life and never new this Garden was here!” – First time visitor “The Garden is so beautiful!” – Long-time member “Can we live here?” – 1st grader

“Mom, I LOVE NATURE!” - 6 year old

meetings, and in some cases, leaps of faith, to achieve the results we did. Regardless, everyone was committed to one thing - the importance of connecting people to nature and the known benefits making such connections have. The Nature Connects exhibit allowed us to introduce concepts of sustainability and wildlife habitats to thousands. Children and families participated in the LEGO Build Workshops and Contest, hundreds downloaded the Get Connected

App and marketing and social media allowed us to reach millions well beyond our Garden gates.

A new energy has been infused into South Coast Botanic Garden. One that not only revels in the discovery of a dynamic natural world but one that looks forward with great anticipation for what exciting experiences lurk around the corner. We look forward to having you continue this magnificent journey with us!

South Coast Botanic Garden Staff worked around the clock to ensure a successful Nature Connects Exhibit.

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE Tanya E. Finney Coccinellidae A.K.A “Ladybirds”, “Lady Beetles”, or “Ladybugs” are a favorite find for the many young visitors to the Garden. The look on a toddler’s face when she finds one in the flowers is priceless and a reminder every day of how special this Garden is. This spring we were happy to provide a new home to several million ladybugs and I wanted to share with you a little bit more about these special creatures. Ladybugs live for about one year, maturing from larvae then pupating to their adult form. In winter the adults hunker down near water, in the spring and summer they will mate, lay eggs, and then die. The larvae live for about one month and are particularly voracious predators of aphids and other soft bodied insects. After the larvae mature, they pupate and emerge as adult ladybugs. As with many insects, the larvae look completely alien from the adult forms. Ladybug larvae look like small alligators with a black body and red stripes. As part of the Garden’s Integrated Pest Management or IPM program, we encourage these natural predators to help control early spring aphid infestations. This last year we partnered with Orcon, a

local organic pest control company to release several million Convergent Ladybugs into the Garden. These beetles are native to California and overwinter in the Sierra Nevada foothills. We spoke to a friend of the Garden who is a ladybug expert about collection and release of ladybugs for biological control of aphids: “The ladybugs released in the early spring are at the end of their natural life cycle. They are looking for aphids to eat so they can mate and lay eggs. Look for the clusters of yellowish eggs on the underside of the leaves and keep your eye out for the resulting larvae. They look like little alligators, pointy on both ends, black with red stripes/blotches.” On your next Garden visit be sure to look for the ladybugs and their larvae; and help us cheer them on in their efforts to keep the flowering plants free from aphids.
