Spring: A Time Renewal

“Lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.” —Song of Solomon Rainy days at the Garden are magical. Children can enjoy a quick puddle jump and get as muddy as their parents will allow, our thirsty collections dance with delight as they drink up their fill and sway in the wind and the birds hunker down and wait out the storms. The pitter-patter has made me contemplate the renewal that will soon spring forth. Already bulbs are sprouting, flowers budding and the meadows are a lush green, but before long, we will witness a rainbow of spring color in our glorious South Coast Botanic Garden.

| South Coast Botanic Garden | SPRING IN THE GARDEN

Another important renewal is on the horizon — the renovation of the Rose Garden. I am happy to report that as this newsletter goes to print our temporary construction fencing is going up. Shortly thereafter, we will welcome the equipment and crews that will revitalize the space, and before long, our specialty area will serve as a living, breathing museum of the rose.

2

The new Rose Garden is the first in a sequence of planned capital projects intended to attract new audiences and enhance the guest experience. The renovation will provide unparalleled access opportunities for visitors of all abilities and will serve as a place that is contemplative and serene, providing respite from the congestion of city life amid a stunning showcase of rose species, including hybrids, tea, floribunda, grandiflora and English varieties. Staying true to the spirit of the South Coast Botanic Garden’s history as a landfill, the project employs sustainable horticultural practices. Every inch of the existing garden will be repurposed in the new plantings and architectural elements — fountains will be deconstructed with stones redeployed; paving bricks will be crushed and reused; and diseased plants will be mulched and composted. Water conservation is a major priority, with water reuse systems that will employ smart controllers and water reclamation. With a letter devoted to spring renewal, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind you that your renewed membership support helps to make our Garden grow. Membership dues, plant purchases, Gift Shop patronage and additional donations are all so vital to our success. If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to renew your membership and perhaps also consider making a gift in support of the highly anticipated new Rose Garden.

Thanks to the rains, visitors were treated to the rare event of a full lake at SCBG. Photo by: Craig Oda

DEVELOPMENT Your Support Matters

Y

our donation to the Garden can make a big difference in the lives of our visitors, especially children who come for free programs and field trips. As a touching reminder, we recently received this note from Nalani, a first-grade student from Oxnard St. Elementary School in North Hollywood. As part of our partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, Nalani’s class participated in our Nature Explorer’s Passport Program. The free pilot program connects students to natural science concepts through grade-specific walking adventures in the Garden. Nalani’s school is classified as “Title 1,” which means it is eligible for subsidized nutrition programs and that their students are particularly in need. If you’d like to make a donation to support our school visits program, please contact Audra Platz at (310) 544-1948 or audra@scbgf.org. On behalf of Nalani, and the other 1,200 students who visit the Garden each year, thank you for your generous support.

A Gift of Stock Ensures the Future

10

Hoping to inspire others, long-time friend and champion of the Garden, Susie Norton, recently made a $25,000 gift for the new Rose Garden Renovation with a donation of stock. “My husband John was a member, and after he introduced me to the Garden, I became a volunteer for many years, including as a former trustee. While I don’t personally like to plant and tend to a garden, I do love to enjoy the vibrant colors and sweeping vistas that the South Coast Botanic Garden provides. I cannot think of a more suitable way to honor John’s memory while also supporting an important cultural destination.” Susie explained, “A gift of stock is an advantageous way to give, and it can be very simple.”

There are also financial advantages to making a gift of stock: ►► You can donate appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds ►► The total value of the stock upon transfer is tax-deductible ►► There is no obligation to pay any capital gains taxes on the appreciation To learn more about making a gift of stock, please contact Audra Platz at (310) 544-1948 or audra@scbgf.org.

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE While walking the Garden recently, I was reminded of one of the things that makes our plant collection unique, our many mature trees and shrubs. This includes our magical Banyan Grove and our Bronze Loquat tree, notable for its listing in the California Registry of Big Trees. Some of these trees are plants you may be familiar with and others are hidden gems. I’d like to introduce you to a couple of them and welcome you to check out our mature specimens on your next visit.

A spectacular example is the Floss Silk Tree (Ceiba (=Chorisia) insignis and C. speciosa). While both are common species in parks and large landscapes, the Garden’s specimens are unusual in their size and natural forms. One of the oldest trees in the Garden is the White Floss Silk Tree located on the Tram Road near the Redwood Grove. This tree is so large that it gets lost in the surrounding canopy, but if you are looking up from the Tram Road in the spring you will be treated to an amazing show with the tree canopy covered in white blooms. And if you miss the flowers, you definitely won’t miss the large conical spines when you check out its swollen trunk. Related to this is the Pink Floss Silk Tree that greets you at the circle when you step through the gates and, when in bloom, stops visitors in their tracks!

Schinus lentiscifolius tree form

Last year we uncovered another hidden gem. Just beyond the Banyan Grove a tangle of cape honeysuckle had overgrown surrounding trees. When the crews completed clearing overgrowth, in addition to highlighting the Ficus trees, we were delighted to discover an unusual tree related to the Brazilian Pepper. Native to South America, Schinus lentiscifolius, Uruguayan Pepper Tree, forms a swollen caudex-like trunk with a canopy of lacy leaves. This is an unusual

species in cultivation and our specimen is an unusually mature form. In a Garden of 87 acres there are many hidden gems, some are hidden right in front of us. Look for the Chilean Wine Palm, Bottle Trees, Bronze Loquat and Ponytail Palm; all can be found if you take a walk along the Tram Road. When you visit the Garden next, I hope you’ll take some time to visit some of the mature plants of our collections.

Ponytail Palm
