25 Years Ago Elaine Cornish Planted Seeds for the Future

The

Banyan Legacy Society

“When Elaine passed away she left her 5.5-acre property, which included her home in Rancho Palos Verdes, to the place she loved, the South Coast Botanic Garden.” Those are the words of family friend, Susanne Luard Lenz, remembering Elaine Cornish, who named the Garden as a beneficiary in her will when she passed away in 1992.

| South Coast Botanic Garden | SUMMER IN THE GARDEN

“Elaine so loved plants, greenery and how the Garden always gave back to others. She volunteered at the Craft Workshop and actively took classes. She wanted to perpetuate her love into something tangible for all to appreciate and enjoy.”

Fully inspired by Susanne’s call, we decided it was time to begin acknowledging our generous planned giving donors during their lifetimes. As such, we are pleased to announce the formation of the Banyan Legacy Society – a recognition program for individuals who have included the Garden in their estate plans. Society members will be recognized on a new donor wall, receive a stylish pin to showcase their commitment and be invited to participate in permanent naming opportunities in our new Garden projects, like the Rose Garden.

“Often individuals don’t realize that they have the means to make a significant gift to their Elaine Cornish (left) with friend Dorothy Barnes (right) 1982 favorite charity, but once they consider the at her home in Rancho Palos Verdes value of their estate, things open up a bit,” said Susanne recently reached out to us asking if we Brown. “Suddenly a six or seven figure gift to were interested in photos of Elaine that she had name a portion of the Rose Garden is easily come across while cleaning her basement. Introducing the NEW

14

Nature can inspire endless creativity in children. A shrub can represent a hiding place for a village of secret creatures; a hole in the ground an access point to a hidden lair; and the rustle of leaves a beckoning song for a troupe of woodland creatures. If you can coax the electronic devices from their tiny hands, real-life adventures await.

And, in order to invite a larger number of children and families to participate, we’ve designed the new program in a drop-in style, allowing busy parents to plan what is right for their schedule – whether participating in a bite-sized trip with participation in just one station, or taking the afternoon to fulfill all four missions.

This month we are re-launching the Kids Club program with a new philosophy that harnesses the creative energy of the Garden to encourage blossoming minds and family connections to grow.

Each mission will provide a lens for interpretation of the Garden, not through fancy materials, but through creative inspiration. Close your eyes and listen to the sounds of nature and draw a picture of what you heard. Make a “painting” with natural materials and let it blow away in the breeze. Use your imagination and go searching under rocks for evidence of magical creatures.

Led by your little Indiana Jones, grab a Kids Club map and chart your adventure to find four secret mission stations each month. Participants will be invited to work together as a family and take a closer look at the plants and animals living within our gates.

Check our calendar listings and stop by monthly to meet the new kid in town! As a member, your participation in Kids Club is FREE! Non-members are welcome too, with the purchase of Garden admission. Reservations are not required.

Announcing Expanded Summer Tram Service

The Garden is filled with fitness-lovers, whether the yoga students on the meadow, the Tai Chi participants on the Koi Pond Patio, or the throngs of walkers rounding the loop daily. But, if you find that logging your daily 10,000 steps during the hot summer months is too daunting, we’ve got great news for you.

We are thrilled to announce expanded tram service beginning this summer, with new on and off privileges at five different stops around our Tram Loop Road. Now you can take an excursion out to Phoebe’s Meadow or adventure into the deep woods without fear of a treacherous return trip.

Pick up a tram wrist band the next time you check-in at Guest Services and take a ride. Tram service will be offered at $5 per person and will run from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays and from 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. Our new Deluxe level of membership offers unlimited tram rides – so this is a great opportunity to consider a membership upgrade and take a free ride! 15
