into her world of imaginative play. Anyone within earshot is subject to finding their child within and must succumb to the creative scenarios that come from the mind of a toddler. Other times, she relishes being alone, often finding something quiet to do by herself. Maybe she’ll take out the markers and color or read a favorite book. Most recently, she took out a box of colorful blocks and began building. I watched her sort through colors, line up similar sized pieces and stack blocks ever so precisely. I resisted the urge to jump in to help her when her towers would fall over because they became too top heavy or she didn’t provide the structure with enough of a foundation. As I sat back, it occurred to me how metaphorical building blocks are to what is going on here at South Coast Botanic Garden.

Our long-range vision plan has laid the foundation for projects moving forward. With the plan as our guide, we are able to establish vista points within the Garden, expand plant collections and build new garden areas. As you all know, the Rose Garden Renovation is currently underway. It is our hope that by the time you are reading this, we will have received the “all-clear” to begin breaking ground. We have also completed schematic designs for two new garden areas – the Children’s Garden and a Native Plant Garden. We challenged the designers and our working group teams to come up with a design for both garden spaces that gave a nod to our mission but also represented designs that showcased innovation and creativity. We feel we now have the foundational building blocks for the new Children’s Garden and Native Plant Garden and can move

As members, you all know how special the Garden is and the many things we offer in service to the community. Unfortunately, there are many more out there that have not heard about South Coast Botanic Garden or “drive by us all the time” but have not made it a point to come in. We are determined to no longer keep the South Coast Botanic Garden the best kept secret in the South Bay! We’ve taken the necessary steps to build awareness of the Garden in the community and beyond. You have probably seen the subtle changes we’ve made to the formatting of our newsletter, the makeover of our website and our increased marketing efforts. Over the next few months, you’ll witness an increase in attention to the Garden as we get ready to welcome the Nature Connects exhibit in February of 2016. Nature Connects is an award-winning, record-breaking exhibition now touring the United States. Built from nearly half a million LEGO pieces, this show features 27 larger-than-life sculptures built with LEGO bricks by New York
artist Sean Kenney. Visitors will be in wonder as they walk under an eight-foot tall hummingbird, stand next to a seven-foot rose, and go noseto-nose with a five-foot butterfly. We are excited to host this exhibit and eager to see how these literal building blocks will help create a sense of wonder for all who visit. There are also some exciting programs and members-only events leading up to the arrival of Nature Connects, so make sure you check our website for updates, read your eNews and Newsletters, and keep up with us on Facebook. This is something you don’t want to miss!

GARDEN LEADERS HONORED The South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation hosted a rose-themed luncheon on June 17 to honor two extraordinary women, Ann Carley and Marion Scharffenberger, for their support of the new Rose Garden. These long-time Garden members provided the lead gifts for the new Rose Garden which is slated to be completed in 2016. (L-R) Marion Scharffenberger, artist Jennifer Hudson and Ann Carley
Mrs. Carley, who also serves on the Foundation Board, and Mrs.Scharffenberger, both expressed how impressed they have been with the Garden’s progress over the last five years under the new leadership of Adrienne Nakashima, Foundation CEO. Both honorees shared with fellow donors and guests that in addition to their passion for gardening and roses, the innovative direction of the Garden’s leadership and growth was one of the deciding factors in their decision to support the new Rose Garden. Each honoree was presented with an original watercolor painting of a single rose created by Beverly Hills artist, Jennifer Hudson, who took her inspiration for the paintings from the current Rose Garden. Ms. Hudson’s work can be seen and purchased in the Garden Gift Shop.
SUPPORT FOR NEW ROSE GARDEN ENDOWMENT KICKS-OFF! “My grandmother instilled in all of us the importance of giving back and to make every day count!” said Gabby Norton, Foundation Special Events Manager. “So, when my family and I heard that we could adopt-a-rose bush to support the new Rose Garden, we knew this was the perfect way to honor this amazing woman who demonstrated these values every day.” It has been exciting to see Garden members, volunteers, County and Foundation staff all come together to support the new Rose Garden Endowment, ensuring it is as beautiful and relevant in Events Manager, Gabby Norton, in the Rose Garden ten years as it will be the day it reopens to the public. The endowment goal is $300,000 and all contributions will be reserved in a special fund for the Rose Garden’s ongoing preservation. We invite you to consider giving to the new Rose Garden Endowment. Your gift is tax-deductible and will continue to give back to our community for generations to come.

FALL IN THE GARDEN 2015
SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE TANYA E. FINNEY Sometimes it’s the little things that really bring home the importance of our Garden’s unique horticulture. On a recent Member’s Only Garden Walk, a budding young botanist, along with her mom, siblings and 25 other members, hiked the Garden’s hidden trails. It was a beautiful summer evening. We dissected flowers, compared seeds and seed pods, and asked questions about the trees and flowers we saw. Her excitement about our “trip to Australia” (even though we didn’t get on a plane!) and the hug I got at the end of the hike reminded me how the Garden and our special collections can inspire and excite both children and adults. On your next visit, I hope you’ll enjoy visiting some of our unique collections, whether it is the magical Banyan Grove with its magnificent Morton Bay Figs or the Conifer Collection featuring Aleppo and Torrey Pines as well as the giant Bunya Bunya tree. The name plates on our trees show you where the plant grows naturally, so you too can take a trip without even getting onto a plane! You’ll also want to check out our newest landscape, which is a water-wise addition at our Guest Services Center. Framing the Garden’s name sign are masses of two of our favorite plants: Aeoniums and Aloes. The low growing Aloes are botanical cousins to the three tree Aloes that are featured in this space. We love the colors and textures that these succulents provide and hope that this installation will inspire you to create a beautiful, low water landscape in your own garden.
VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT South High School Teen Gives Back to the Garden “When I was trying to figure out how I wanted to spend my summer, naturally the Garden came to mind,“ said the 17-year old member. Meghan Tahbaz, a South High School student, had fond recollections of enjoying the Garden as a young child. Last year, Meghan asked SCBGF Guest Services Manager, Carol Howden, to speak at her 4-H Club. “Carol really inspired me to volunteer by sharing the Garden’s history and role in the community. I began volunteering at the South Coast Botanic Garden not because I needed community service hours for my school or even because I wanted to list it as a job on a future résumé. Actually, I just wanted my summer to have a purpose other than sitting lazily on the couch, watching a marathon of The Housewives of Atlanta. I’d thought about various places to volunteer—the animal shelter, preserve areas, the aquarium—but the Botanic Garden was the only place that held memories for me
Guest Services Manager, Carol Howden, with student volunteer, Meghan Tahbaz
and continued to be a significant part of my life. As a toddler I had skipped through the Children’s Garden, always making sure to peep in at the doll in her dollhouse. As a 10-year old, I had toured the grounds with my girls scout troop, commemorating the field trip with a picture over the Japanese bridge. As a middle school student I had visited the Garden’s conference room to participate in one of my 4-H meetings.” Now, as a high school student, Meghan volunteers at the Garden’s Gift Shop. “It’s wonderful to be surrounded by nature and appreciate what the Garden provides for people of all ages.” Students and youth volunteers such as Meghan have been a wonderful addition to the South Coast Botanic Garden. Volunteer opportunities for high school students are available year-round. Most of the students help with various garden projects, special events or at The Gift Shop.
