ROSE GARDEN RENOVATION

Phase One was made possible through the generous donations of long-time Garden member, Marion Scharffenberger and Board of Trustees member, Ann Carley.

Many of you visited the Rose Garden over the fall and winter months and were treated to a spectacular display of color due to the unusually warm weather and lack of rainfall. Many of you have also heard about the Rose Garden Renovation, and although the roses were looking their finest, there are exciting plans underway to make this space a truly special place. Once Landscape Architect Deborah Richie-Bray completes the construction documents, Phase One of the renovation will begin.

PHASE ONE includes the

installation of the Entertainment Lawn which includes a center trellis, event lawn and surrounding plantings. In addition, the entrance and center walkways will be redesigned and offer a lovely way to move throughout the garden.

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE TANYA E. FINNEY How do we know it’s spring? At South Coast Botanic Garden a collection of almost 200 flowering fruit trees, including Cherries, Nectarines, Apricots, Peaches and Plums, are the first trees to bloom each year and

signal that spring is here! By far the showiest variety in the Garden is the ‘Pink Cloud’ Japanese Flowering Cherry, named for the large round clusters of pink flowers created when they bloom en masse in late February to early March. The Flowering Cherries can be found throughout the Garden, and two of the best areas

to view them are the Amphitheater and Sakura Meadow (Sakura is the Japanese word for Flowering Cherry).

Flowering fruit trees can also be found in the Rare Fruit Orchard on the far side of the Garden where Acacia Loop and Tram Roads meet. Many fruiting Cherries, Apricots, Peaches and Plums require long winters to produce fruit. The Rare Fruit Orchard displays cultivars that require fewer chill hours, and thus are viable fruiting varieties for our mild winter area. Apricot ‘Katy’, Nectarine ‘Panamint’ and Peach ‘Red Baron’ are three of the varieties of flowering fruit trees that are displayed in the orchard among other unusual tropical fruiting trees and shrubs such as Citron, Bananas, Macadamia and Persimmons. This year we will be welcoming the beginning of spring with picnicking under the Flowering Cherry trees. We hope you will come and enjoy “Hanami” with us (the centuries-old practice of picnicking under a blooming sakura or ume tree) as well as musical and cultural programs during our Cherry Blossom Festival over two weekends beginning on Saturday, February 28.

RAP UPDATE Effective December 1, 2014 Descanso Gardens will no longer be providing free admission to members of the AHS Reciprocal Admission Program that lie within the 90-mile exclusion radius of their garden. Conceived in the 1950’s to encourage garden tourism, the RAP program offers members free or discounted admission to flower shows and botanical gardens throughout North America. It was never intended to be a dual-membership program between neighboring gardens and for this reason, your SCBG membership will no longer allow you admission to Descanso Gardens. There are still many more gardens to visit on this program.
