he biggest ‘connector’ of them all, Facebook, recently wrote “When people connect, powerful things happen and lives are changed.” This was in conjunction with the acknowledgment of their 12th birthday where they take that same time each year to celebrate and reflect on the importance of connecting.

| South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation | SPRING IN THE GARDEN

Experts have also written about what happens when there is a lack of ‘connection,’ especially between children and nature. In his book, The Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv talks about ‘nature-deficit disorder’ and documents how modern family life has dramatically changed in the last two decades. Children and families often have limited opportunities to connect with the natural environment. Yet, the benefits of connecting with nature are well documented. Research shows that children’s social, psychological, academic and physical health are all positively impacted when they have daily contact with nature.

Here at the Garden, when we sit down to discuss plans for each season, we review our approach from many different angles. What classes have people enjoyed before? What new events do we want to try? Which events did well that we should look at doing again? What are some

suggestions members or visitors have made that we should explore further? At every discussion, we always come back to the same theme – what can we do to make sure we are getting people “connected” to South Coast Botanic Garden. As I write this, we are furiously trying to get ready for a very busy Spring Season. Not only is the calendar jam packed with fun activities, classes and special events, but we are very excited to be welcoming the Nature Connects: Art with LEGO® Bricks exhibit, opening on Friday, February 19. Take a look at the variety of classes being offered this coming Spring. Check out the various society shows and sales. Come to our annual Spring Plant Sale. Find some time to check out the Nature Connects exhibit. We’ve done our best to offer you the most fun ways to enjoy the change of seasons and GET CONNECTED at South Coast Botanic Garden!

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE Tanya E. Finney

At South Coast Botanic Garden, we are always looking for ways to use demonstrations to teach our visitors. From temporary installations such as the Giant Pumpkin patch, to annual color beds with edible winter crops, to our recent El Niùo installation partnering with Things Green and Nick Federoff on a display giving information on how to prep your home and garden for fierce winter rain storms, we love to show our visitors how to use plants in a unique way. In the Garden the gift of learning comes from adventures in nature and the outdoors. One of our newest demonstration beds was installed at the beginning of 2016 on the far side of the Vegetable Garden and across the road from the Display Greenhouse. A knee-high raised garden bed features salsa herbs and vegetables. But it is what’s under the soil that makes it so special.

This raised wicking bed is a demonstration in low water-use gardening and helps us water a difficult corner of the garden. A reservoir dug under the planter base is layered with a pond liner and filled with stones then layered with burlap. The raised bed is set on top and filled with soil, then planted. The burlap acts as a wicking layer between the reservoir and the garden soil; the reservoir is filled with water via the PVC pipe and the plants are watered from below. Finally, an overflow outlet on the opposite side prevents waterlogging plants. Voila!

Paul Lasman and Joe Moeller installing gravel for the water reservoir

The idea developed from the wish to test a new watering system, demonstrate this technique to our visitors, and solve a watering problem with a planter bed that didn’t have good irrigation cover. The wicking bed helps us conserve water by reducing evaporation from top watering and keeping soil in contact with a regular reservoir of water. It also

works great for areas that are not on regular irrigation because the gardener can fill the reservoir with water which will last for several days while water wicks up into the soil from below. In our case, the garden bed is on a hot dry corner, without a regular irrigation system, so it makes a lot of sense for us to test this here. This demonstration came to life through the vision, design, and hard work of Garden Volunteers Paul Lasman, Steve Jordan, Joe Moeller, Albert Ochoa, and Bob Papp. From their imagination and desire to try something new, grew this beautiful

Raised planter bed positioned over the reservoir

garden bed. As we welcome the Nature Connects exhibit this spring we encourage all of you to follow your imagination in nature and we hope you will visit this new garden bed and watch the Garden grow!
