from the executive editor

“The best investment on earth is earth.” —Louis Glickman

I

“IF ONLY”—BOY, IF I HAD A DOLLAR FOR EVERY TIME I HEARD THOSE WORDS FROM MY OR SOMEONE ELSE’S LIPS. If only I had listened. If only I had told them. If only I had done this or that. If only… I am fairly certain that you, just like me, have uttered the dreaded “if only” when you were buying or selling real estate. If only I had bought sooner, bought later, sold sooner, sold later. The truth is, that while home prices have remained a bit flat, home sales volume jumped in Florida. The Sarasota market remains solid and Florida’s economic outlook is excellent for 2019/2020 (gordcollins.com). Zillow gives a 9.0/10 rating for the health of Florida’s real estate market. Why wouldn’t it? As a native New Yorker, I can honestly say that if I still lived there, I would be very anxious to get out. High taxes. Businesses leaving. Did you know that New York State is ranked 48th in the country in overall business tax climate, seventh in corporate tax rates, 48th for individual income taxes, 42nd in sales taxes, 47th in property taxes and 31st in unemployment insurance taxes? Joining New York in the bottom 10 in the rankings are bordering states Connecticut and New Jersey. Last year, Florida had the most people in the U.S. moving here from other states with New York contributing the most to Florida’s gain in population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 64,000 people moved from New York State to Florida in 2017. In the last decade, over 1 million New Yorkers have fled the state with Florida being their top destination.

from the executive editor While there are many other variables that dictate the health of our real estate market, we can be sure of one thing—Florida is a great place to live. For the past decade, Sarasota County has experienced year-over-year growth. Manatee County has experienced compounding increases. US News “Best Places” rankings place Sarasota as 18th for best places to live in the nation and third for best places to retire.

Morton’s Gourmet Market, circa 1970s.

There are whispers that another real estate crash is coming (there always are), but there are key indicators, as well as many economists, that say no. It seems to be all about price right now. Local professionals tell me that if greed doesn’t take over, and homes are priced correctly, people are buying. Realistic and sensible win every time. Don’t be one of those buyers or sellers who say, “If only…” As you may have guessed, this is Scene’s real estate issue. We feature Realtors who are tops in their profession, and who have achieved great success for clients. If you’re looking to buy or sell, please consider talking to them. There’s a reason they continue to dominate the industry they serve.

WICKED SMART HOMES

Creating Tech-tacular Homes

Living with well-designed home automation technology is like having a dedicated concierge who anticipates and fulfills your wishes for a comfortable, secure and pleasing environment. Wicked Smart Homes has been creating sophisticated, and easy-to-use, integrated systems for 10 years that have earned the company industry accolades for its designs.

“We don’t just talk about equipment, we consider ourselves designers of interior technology and we always have an eye to the aesthetic vision our clients want. That is where we shine as a company,” said Mark Bolduc, President of Wicked Smart Homes. “Years ago people talked about technology enhancing lives, which it does, but now everything is about simplicity, ease of use and aesthetics.” Although lighting, motorized window treatments, climate control, and security are fully automated, homeowners also can manage their homes with app-based control and make changes from anywhere in the world.

Wicked Smart Homes was founded in 2009 by Bolduc and Adam Panzera. Today, the company has a location in Naples in addition to its Sarasota headquarters with 24 employees who have various areas of expertise, including a dedicated service team. Training is important to ensure everyone adheres to the standards and procedures that have been developed to help ensure a good customer experience. Continuing education also is emphasized to keep staff members abreast of new product developments and techniques.

ADVANCING TECHNOLOGY BRINGS CONVENIENCE AND SOME RISK TO THE FUTURE OF REAL ESTATE CLOSINGS BY SUE CULLEN

Technology touches nearly all aspects of everyday life from refrigerators that create grocery lists to beds that rate how well we’re sleeping. Now, a bill under consideration by the Florida legislature would open the door to bringing tech to one of the most significant transactions in people’s lives–closing on a home, business or investment property. As with many technological advances, this could bring great benefits in terms of convenience and efficiency, but there also can be risks.

If such legislation is enacted, notarization of legal documents would be permitted via real-time, two-way electronic communication rather than having to meet personally with a notary public. Fifteen other state legislatures have enacted laws allowing this remote online notarization (RON) and others are considering it. To ensure clients’ interests and security remain protected, real estate attorneys at Norton, Hammersley, Lopez and Skokos, a Sarasota law firm concentrating in real estate, business, tax, trial practice, and dispute resolution, have been preparing for this eventual transition to technological options and anticipating how the closing process may evolve. “Our clients often ask why they have to come in to sign documents rather than e-signing them. Everyone is looking for a convenient solution, and there is a large demand in the market for online closings,” said attorney Michael Infanti. “Remote online notarization is the first step to creating online closings. This hasn’t been possible before because, even though contracts can be signed electronically in some cases, the individual still has to be present in order to notarize other important documents.” Although this may be the first step toward a more efficient closing process, it might not be the best choice for everyone. During closings, homebuyers are faced with a stack of legal paperwork. While Truth-in-Lending and other required disclosures in the transaction are aimed at ensuring consumers are informed, it can still be confusing for many homebuyers. “We already do what we can to accommodate clients with alternative options to closings in our office. Documents can be taken to clients, if they’re in town, or mailed, and online closings would provide an even more efficient and timely choice,” said attorney Alexandra Glauser. “Millennials especially want to be able to do everything on their phones, so remote online notarization would provide that. However, online closings probably are more beneficial to an experienced buyer who already understands what they are signing. Those who are less familiar with the different aspects of a real estate transaction can benefit from sitting down with an experienced attorney so we can make sure everything is explained and the paperwork is completed properly.” Another issue that must be addressed for online closings to become a reality is hesitance on the part

of lenders. “They are somewhat reluctant to accept electronic signatures on documents, and they want the attorney or title agent to be managing the process. With an electronic process, lenders are concerned about who is managing the transaction and verifying whether documents really are signed by the right person,” Infanti said. “Some of the larger lenders have started new initiatives to streamline the electronic process, including best practices.” Florida’s proposed legislation, House Bill 409, also addresses security concerns, including ensuring the notary and person signing documents can see and hear each other electronically, and the notary can view an official identification such as a passport or driver’s license. The statute also would require a credential analysis by a third party, which could include knowledge based verification through a series of questions derived from public and proprietary data sources or biometrics, which include fingerprints and facial recognition. In addition, notaries would be required to maintain an electronic journal of all notarizations for 10 years, including audio-visual recordings. While notaries are encouraged by the state of Florida to keep journals now, it is not a requirement. Security is always a concern in real estate with the electronic transfer of large sums. Vulnerabilities, such as theft of wire transfers through clever email phishing and other scams, have been well publicized. “People worry about security because the bad guys are very sophisticated. So we have to be smarter with protocols like encrypted keys or dual authentication,” Infanti said. “Our firm has been actively preparing for this by evaluating different technologies to benefit and protect our clients.” Regardless how real estate closings may change in the future, consumers still need to understand what they are agreeing to legally and transactions must be secure. “Who is better suited to protect a client’s interests and security than an experienced real estate attorney?” Glauser asked. “Whether closings are done in person, by mail or online, at the end of the day, it is extremely valuable to have an attorney to call on for an explanation or to give personal legal advice so you can be fully informed about what you are signing.”

Foundation

THE FOR AN “AMAZING HOSPITAL” Chris & Dr. Kirk Voelker By Sylvia Whitman | Photo by Nancy Guth

Dr. Kirk Voelker and his wife, Chris, give their time and treasure to the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation (SMHF). As its website states, “during the past four decades, the Healthcare Foundation has provided meaningful grants to enhance patient care, facilities, technology and support ongoing clinical education and medical research.” Kirk says, “How can you not support the Healthcare Foundation and everything that it’s bringing to the community?” Kirk grew up in Sarasota, attended medical school at UF, and headed to the University of California Irvine for a fellowship in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. In 1996, he returned to Sarasota with Chris, a Los Angelena and corporate event planner who traveled the globe. She had her doubts about small city life. “I brought her back to Sarasota kicking and screaming,” Kirk jokes. Kirk’s pulmonary practice kept him busy at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he marveled at the difference the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation had made both in the institution and in his hometown as a whole. “It helps provide technology and programs that few community hospitals have—because they’re outside of the scope of the budget of a normal community hospital,” he says. “That technology and support attract world-class physicians, which just improves health care in the community. That’s the full circle. We have very talented physicians who come from cuttingedge training programs or hospitals, and we’re able to supply the tools that they need to continue doing that cutting-edge work.” 42

SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2019

Almost seven years ago, SMHF tapped Kirk to serve as a trustee and chair the grants committee. He accepted without hesitation. “I had the unique perspective of not only seeing from a physician’s standpoint the good that the Healthcare Foundation does, but also being involved with decision making and evaluating the grants.” What the Healthcare Foundation looks to fund, says Kirk, is “technology or innovative programs that wouldn’t otherwise be available.” For example, SMH critical care physicians requested an ECMO machine—extracorporeal membrane oxidation—for the intensive care unit. Usually surgeons employ an ECMO in the operating room during cardio-bypass surgery. But the ICU doctors believed that a portable ECMO, used at bedside, could help their sickest patients by temporarily taking over heart and lung functions. The Healthcare Foundation found the proposal compelling and funded the purchase of an ECMO for the ICU. Last flu season, says Voelker, when traditional ventilators could not sustain several patients, doctors turned to the ECMO—and saved them. “They would have died. Young people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s would have died,” says Voelker. He also points to a cardiac patient whose “heart was stunned to the point where it couldn’t pump.” Traditional pump and ventilator protocols failed him, says Voelker, but “we were able to put him on this heart-lung bypass machine in the intensive care unit, and he literally walked out of the hospital 10 days later.”

Now the hospital has two portable bedside ECMO machines, with physicians continuing to find new applications. On her end, Chris fundraises for SMHF. She’s worked on the Healthcare Foundation’s gala and the Women & Medicine educational luncheon, which she co-chaired this year. With a featured speaker, the lunch is “all about bringing information and education to women on health issues,” she says. Last year’s program delved into stroke care and prevention. This year the program supported the FSU Internal Medicine Residency Program at SMH and stressed the importance of communication between women and their doctors—“if you feel something, say something kind of thing,” says Chris. Close to 300 women attended. “It’s become a landmark event,” she says. Chris also manages the Voelkers’ family business: State Street Eating House and Cocktails. When a tenant vacated their downtown storefront at the bottom of the recession, Chris fantasized about the space. “It reminded me of LA, with the art galleries nearby,” she says. “I thought, Maybe we can reproduce that here.” Their sandwich place grew into a full-fledged restaurant, now with a lounge next door, open seven days a week. But even State Street Eating House “circles back to the Healthcare Foundation,” says Kirk. “The connection is healthy food,” explains Chris.

As director of clinical research for the hospital, Kirk has been overseeing an SMHF-funded nutrition experiment called RENEW. The program focuses on “altering the disease process through exercise, nutrition, mindfulness, and community support.” Celebrity physician Dean Ornish has proven that extreme lifestyle changes can actually reverse cardiovascular disease and associated ailments, but the Ornish program is so strict that many people quit. “What we’re doing is less intense,” says Kirk, “but with hopefully the same benefits. It’s more sustainable.” RENEW started with about 50 hospital employees, “teaching them about the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, a plant-based diet, not totally exclusive of animal proteins but just using the animal protein for an accent.” Within 12 weeks, with help from a nutritionist and a life counselor, “they’ve all had significant changes in their lifestyle,” says Kirk. Gone are the twice daily Big Gulps. “Some diabetics have been able to come totally off insulin.” Since Medicare and insurance companies won’t reimburse costs for unproven treatments, let alone preventative care, Kirk explains, “that’s why we need the Healthcare Foundation believe in this, fund it and see we you can go with it.” This pilot has been so successful that RENEW will roll out to the community at large in 2020. Inspired, the Voelkers attended the annual Healthy Kitchens, Healthy Lives conference sponsored by the Harvard School for Public Health and the Culinary Institute of America at CIA’s JUNE 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

About nine months ago, the couple revamped the State Street Eating House menu. “That same transformation, plant-based meals, healthy eating, with everything fresh, has also transformed our restaurant,” says Kirk. Chris says that they’re “over-the-moon excited” about Sarasota Memorial Cancer Institute, which will relieve many local patients of the trip to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. For Chris, this is personal; one of her good friends had to commute for treatment, which separated her from her support network in Sarasota. “We’re taking the top cancers that we see in this community and focusing on those,” explains Kirk. In addition to a new surgical tower and outpatient radiation sites, the Cancer Institute will have oncology nurse navigators. “The complexity of all the testing, services, and treatments is such that it’s overwhelming to the average person,” says Kirk. “And you add on cancer on top of that.” Cancer, he notes, thrives on stress. “So, the navigator program walks people through this, making sure their appointments are set up—you know, hold their hand through this process.

Lynne Koy and SPARCC

PROVING

SURVIVORS CAN PREVAIL By Sylvia Whitman | Photo by Nancy Guth

Google Lynne Koy, and you land on the internet footprint of a powerful woman—“your Sarasota luxury real estate specialist”, an official “Five Star Real Estate Agent” who closed more than $60 million in sales in 2018. Google SPARCC, and you arrive at a Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center. Formed in 1979, SPARCC operates a hotline, a shelter, and outreach services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their children. With an annual budget of about $3.5 million, it throws lifelines to women and men who feel powerless. The link? Lynne Koy serves on SPARCC’s board of directors. She’s particularly engaged these days in governance and fundraising. But the deepest connection, the one you can’t Google, lies in the story of a young mother in the mid-1970s. Atlanta-born and college educated, this woman married her Navy sweetheart and moved to Chicago. A divorce left her a single mom with two toddlers. As she struggled to launch a career, she met a police officer with a young son. Although “signs” in the relationship troubled her, this woman thought she could “fix” her partner. She remarried. One night, while the woman’s daughter, 5, and son, 3, were sleeping, her husband held a knife to her throat. Even decades later, she underplays the violence that sent her to the hospital. “I was bruised.” Her abuser showed up at the ER, dropped to his knees, and swore, “I’ll never do this again.”

“Please don’t believe him,” said a cop at the scene. But she returned home. That’s not uncommon. This woman had long contemplated telling friends or family their shameful secret, but her abuser scoffed at the idea. Who would believe that an upstanding policeman would hurt his own wife? She was trapped—and embarrassed. “Horribly embarrassed.” She had a job and an education. How had she let this happen? Three weeks later, he threatened her again. This time, she waited until he fell asleep and “made a break for it.” With only her kids and the clothes on her back, she called a neighbor, who took her in. “Long story short,” says Lynne Koy, “we were divorced.” Although her ex stalked her for a year, they both moved on. She sold real estate and raised her children. When her parents retired to Longboat Key, Koy began making the 18-hour drive from Chicago. She recalls piling the kids into the car, popping NoDoz, and belting out “Don’t It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue” all the way down the interstate. In 1985, faced with a parental health crisis, she moved to Sarasota. “It took me a little while to figure out how I was going to feed myself in real estate,” says Koy. But within a couple of years, she was volunteering with SPARCC. “I wanted to do something to give back in a meaningful way because of that kind neighbor who had taken me in so many years ago.” In those years, trained volunteers carried a hotline JUNE 2019 | SARASOTA SCENE

phone home and often met callers at the ER. “There were many nights when I got up and met people at the hospital who looked like I had looked at one point,” says Koy.

One 2 a.m. hospital visit has stuck with her. “This young woman was crying, worrying about her children. I sat beside her, and I said, ‘Talk to me. Who’s got your kids? Are they safe? You’re safe now.’” Luckily, the children were staying with a grandmother. “She said, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to live. I don’t know how I’m going to go from here.’ “And I said, ‘You know what? You’ve taken the first step. Hold my hand. Because the next step will be easier. I’ve done it. I’ve been there. Just promise me that you’ll continue down the path. We’re here to help you.’ It was the first time that I openly admitted to anybody that I had been abused, and it was okay. There was value in that conversation.” As her real-estate dealing heated up, Koy had to hang up the hotline. But she continued to support SPARCC and accepted an invitation to join the board of directors five or six years ago. Although Koy says that sometimes she misses interacting directly with clients, she appreciates what she can contribute as a fundraiser and a “connector” recruiting new board members. As SPARCC celebrates its 40th anniversary and Koy enters her third decade of involvement with the nonprofit, she notes both continuity and change. Since its inception, the board has diversified from the handful of women who banded together to found SPARCC to include lawyers, law enforcement officers, business people, and media professionals. Yet a number are “legacies,” following in their mothers’ philanthropic footsteps. Although rarely discussed, Koy is not the only survivor; only a few degrees separate most people from domestic abuse.

After a recent board retreat, Koy sees growth and sustainability as focus areas for SPARCC’s future. One day the organization may expand its 32-bed shelter, which now accepts pets. It will update its Treasure Chest thrift store, which also outfits shelter residents. In Sarasota’s competitive charity scene, SPARCC will continue to appreciate donors and volunteers, including its busy auxiliary, and nurture their connection to the organization. In addition to helping survivors, SPARCC will continue its prevention outreach to students, encouraging them to respect themselves and their partners—be they women or men. “Our goal is to stamp out abuse,” says Koy. “But there will always be something beyond our control.” At its annual gala, which Koy co-chaired this year, SPARCC particularly celebrates survivors—without names, to protect their safety and privacy. Koy was excited to have at her table a young woman who was going to share the story of reclaiming her life. “I was going to hug her and say, ‘You’re making it. Every day is a gift.’” But the client backed out. She just couldn’t stand the spotlight. Koy understood. She wrote her nameless no-show guest a long letter. “God has blessed me,” says Koy. “My name’s in the paper a lot for real estate. My picture’s in the paper a lot for real estate. But this is the work that I was meant to do.”

With limitless and unencumbered water views stretching beyond the glistening canal all the way to Sarasota Bay, this open living home is a breathtaking example of Sarasota School of Architecture—a style that combines incredible luxury, simplicity and dynamic spatial comfort. Each room in the home shines bright with abundant light illuminating tasteful and beautiful details resulting in an incredible process of discovery as you move from room to room. And as with all homes designed by Guy Peterson, the cultural, vernacular and tropical influences of traditional South Florida architecture are blended with the philosophies of the Bauhaus, the German design school considered to be the most influential art and design school of the 20th century and whose teachings shaped modernism all over the world. The home’s sustainable design goes beyond the building to the landscape ensuring positive effects for the environment and the homeowner’s quality of life.

Just ask anyone who sits in on today’s version of the legendary game of Liar’s Poker—the game which became popular locally in the 1950s, when Andersonville author MacKinlay Kantor got some of his writer friends together on a Friday at the old Plaza Restaurant in Downtown Sarasota for a round of drinks, or two, or three. Realizing they needed to limit the drinking, they came up with a plan. Whoever lost a game of Liar’s Poker bought the one round of drinks that day.

WRITING

In addition to Kantor, this informal group of friends included locals Karl Bickel, Dik Browne, Walter Farley (author of The Black Stallion series), Richard Glendinning, Charlie Husking, John D. MacDonald, Ed Pierce and Waldo Proffitt. Visitors included Art Buchwald, Buckminster Fuller and Mike Royko. Leslie McFarlane, ghostwriter of the first 21 Hardy Boy mysteries, and Budd Schulberg (On the Waterfront) were also part of the group. Today the legacy that Kantor started continues with a new, local informal group of friends made up of novelists, screenwriters, journalists and columnists who gather to talk about current and past events, swap stories, share drinks and of course lie when they play Liar’s Poker. And it’s no lie that it’s a game that bestselling mystery writer Don Bruns wouldn’t miss for the world.

on the town “My childhood was great. We were free range. From morning to night we were outside. I built tree forts. I bought an 80-millimeter movie camera. We were kids playing Cowboys and Indians, building sets out old lumber. It was a very creative and fun childhood.” Bruns remembers always being attracted to the creative side of life. “I was woodwind player from the time I was in the 3rd grade. By the time I was in the 6th grade, I had formed a dance band and we played dances for Standard Oil, Westinghouse and other corporations in Lima. We were a dance band of 6th graders playing for adults. Later we formed a rock n’ roll band in high school and played all the high schools. I always gravitated toward the creative.” It was in a Lima classroom where Bruns, as a young boy, admittedly just an average student who was often bored, remembers vividly being hit with the writing bug.

But to Don Bruns writing is anything but a game. It’s serious business. Something he’s had a lot of success and fun doing since publishing his first book some 17 years ago. As a younger man, when he played a little more music on his instruments than he did on his typewriter, Bruns got the bug that often bites those from the cold Midwest when they encounter the allure of azure tides, fiery sunsets and palm trees waving welcome home signs. “I fell in love with Fort Lauderdale,” says Bruns. “I had my guitar in hand. We were there for Spring Break, playing for college kids, playing at a hotel that was right on the water. That whole thing just had the romance. It was a total feeling of wow!” It was also something that Bruns remembered years later when he was considering a place to retire with his wife. “We literally stuck a pin in a map of Florida, and it ended up hitting Sarasota.” In the beginning, Bruns was a snowbird running his advertising agency from the Sunshine State. “My staff was all up North and I could do anything on a laptop. I had a studio, could do voice work and pretty much anything.” He made the complete commitment to Sarasota about seven years ago. While Bruns didn’t publish his first novel, Jamaica Royale, until he was 50, he’s always had an affinity for the written word that dates back to his roots and beginnings in Lima, Ohio, where he was born from what he calls a “wonderful upbringing.”

“Other than the music classes, the only class that ever served me well was Typing, with my teacher Frances Gorman, in the 8th grade. I can’t imagine where I would be had I not taken that class.” It certainly helped the young Bruns when he pounded on the typing keys as the sports editor for the school newspaper, The Shawnee Chief. Still if there is ever one place or moment where Bruns could say that he fell in love with the power of the written word and the magic of storytelling, it was an American Literature class taught by Mr. Robinson (Robby). Bruns recalls, “I read like crazy all my life. And I liked to write at the paper. But Robby taught Melville’s Moby Dick. I remember him analyzing the text. Pointing out some of the red herrings and the real symbolism you had to follow. I had never read a book like that before, studying it and talking about it. It gave me a much greater appreciation. I remember him going on about how we had to capture the spirit of Ahab and feel the energy of a book. He got on his chair, jumped onto his desk and picked up a flag pole imitating Ahab going after the white whale.” Bruns remembers sitting with his classmates, mouths hanging wide open, but he also remembers something else about that day. “At that moment I realized this is bringing literature to life. I can do this.” He remembers another story. With Bruns there is always another story, and in this case, it was yet another teacher who had a big influence on him becoming a prolific author.

on the town and roll journalist of extreme charm who’s a competent sleuth. Of Jamaica Blue, author Sue Grafton wrote, “Don Bruns has staked his turf…sex, drugs, rock & roll, and murder. What more could you want?” And she is one lady who should know. She knew exactly what she wanted from Don Bruns when their paths crossed, and she saw potential in this yet to be published author. Whether you are writing mysteries or merely living the mystery that is your life, there are seminal moments when you experience something and everything changes because of a life-altering event. You don’t always know how it happened or why it happened—it just happens. That is mystery in itself. Such was the case when Don Bruns met Sue Grafton. “I turned 50, took my guitar and headed to Jamaica. There I contemplated my life. Where I had been and where I wanted to be as I explored the lifestyle that one does when they are there. “When I came back, I called my accountant and asked how I could write the trip off. He said, ‘Write a book about your trip and sell it.’ And so, I did.” “I decided that I had been writing that book for years and to now take it seriously. I had the feeling that if I don’t do it now, then I’m never going to get it done. So, I sat down and wrote a story.” A friend convinced him to go to a writer’s conference in Arizona to meet and network with other like-minded people to see how it’s done. He did. There he met Sue Grafton, the Alphabet Series mystery writer—A is for Alibi, B is for Burglar. At the conference she auctioned off a critique of someone’s manuscript with proceeds going to charity. Bruns bought her critique for “550 bucks.” After cleaning up the manuscript with the help of his wife who was an English teacher, Bruns sent it to Sue Grafton. “One week later I get an eight-page critique from Sue. It started out with: ‘Have you ever read a book in your life?’ It didn’t sound to me like it was going to be a positive critique.” “The truth is that it was very negative and filled with a lot of red ink. Comments were generally along the lines of, ‘You made this huge mistake here…What were you thinking here? What were you trying to prove?’” “Finally, I just put it away,” Bruns confesses. “Three days later I get a phone call from Sue Grafton. I thought it was a joke, because I had told some people about the critique.” Turns out it was no joke. 90

SARASOTA SCENE | JUNE 2019

Bruns remembers the conversation well. Sue Grafton: “Are you ready to shoot yourself or shoot me?” Bruns: “I don’t know you and you don’t know me, but I think you were a little harsh.” Sue Grafton: “I was going to send you a one-page letter telling you to clean up your characters, to do this and do that, but instead I sent what I sent. You are an extremely good writer. You make a lot of classic mistakes. Clean up those mistakes. Now, throw away that manuscript and write me a new book.” I told her I didn’t have the time. She said, “Don’t give me that S***. I have five books in desk drawers that will never see the light of day. Write me another book. I’ll read it and if I like it, I will get it sold.” Six months later, Bruns sent Sue Grafton Jamaica Blue. She called him the day after she got it. “I read it in one sitting. It’s wonderful. I can get those sold.” After 9/11, Grafton attended a world mystery conference named in honor of famed mystery author Anthony Boucher. As she was ready to do her Q & A with an audience of around 1500, Bruns was astonished when Grafton said, “I want to introduce Don Bruns who is in the audience. He’s got a book that somebody needs to buy. It’s really good.” “I looked at my wife and said ‘Holy crap.’ I go out in the hall after the talk and Charlie Spicer from St. Martin’s Press approached me and said, ‘Are you the guy? Do you have the novel?’ I handed it to him. He read it on the train to New York. The next week he called me and said, ‘Get an agent, because we’re going to buy your book.’”

on the town “And that’s how you get published,” Bruns says with a grin. Published in big way. Multiple times. With multiple series. Bruns will tell you that he likes all of his books while not leaning on the cliché of “I like them all—they are all my children.” Of his Caribbean series, he favors South Beach Shakedown. “Working on that was wild. The party atmosphere. Going to the clubs. Feeling the hard driving rhythms of the music. Speed boats. The rich and the powerful. Due to the nature of that whole scene, it was my favorite of the series.” I asked Bruns who he is in his books. Is he Mick Sever? He gave me the right answer—a writer’s answer. “I realized early on that I was everybody. I was the worst and the most depraved character and the guy who can leap tall buildings. They all have to come out of the same person—in this case, me.” They indeed all do come out this man with the distinguished looking grey hair, genuine smile, free spirit and easy writing style. For Bruns, writing is not a chore or something he struggles with. “I never get writer’s block. I don’t know a writer who does. Sure you put it down, but then you have to pick it right up, especially when you’re writing on deadline. The words come to you, and often it just flows.” Another mystery series followed as he created a character named Quentin Archer—a former Detroit Cop who is a New Orleans homicide detective. In its inaugural book, Casting Bones, “Library Journal” heaped praise on his effort, stating: “As hot and steamy as a Louisiana night, this series debut hits all the right nights with evocative Big Easy setting, colorful and memorable characters, and smartly twisted plot.” The kind of praise a writer relishes and that almost didn’t happen. Bruns, who was between books at the time, had been working on building his Twitter following, through the advice of others. Because of Twitter, he got an e-mail from a woman named Kate Grant who was with Severn House Publishing in England, looking to publish more of his work. Bruns would have never guessed that building his Twitter following would lead to getting his new series published. The second of the books in that series was Thrill Kill and his latest book No Second Chances was just released in May of 2019.

Stuff To Die For, was followed by Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, Stuff To Spy For; Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff; Too Much Stuff; Hot Stuff and Reel Stuff. The series has been praised by reader and critic alike with accolades a writer never gets tired of hearing. The mystery of it all. How he does it. And does it again, again and again. Bruns will humbly tell you with a straight face that he’s not terribly structured on the craft of writing. “I’m not organized enough to have a process. It would take the creativity out of it. I always have four or five ideas in my head where I want to go next.” Bruns is grateful he has contracts for the books in his series and that pushes him to get it done. He also tells me that in all the years he’s never missed a deadline and therefore never had to return an advance. I asked him how a writer knows when it’s just right. Without hesitation, Bruns boldly proclaims, “You don’t. I don’t know a writer who turns in a book satisfied. Ever. Because if you can keep it even one more week to brush up on this and polish that, and make the character a little richer, you might. You simply never know that.” What about the famous writer’s adage that a writer writes what he knows? I had to ask him. “I kill people. I don’t know about that. I don’t know how to kill people. I have a book— Murder for Dummies,” he laughs. “I flip through it and find poisons. If the authorities ever do a search on any mystery writer’s computer, they may be in a lot of trouble. I have researched some pretty dark topics.” The stuff dreams and mystery novels are made of for sure. What does this mystery writer hope readers take away from his books? “I like people to feel like they’ve been on a trip. I kid around with people about the Caribbean series. I tell them for 25 bucks you can go to Barbados, feel like you’ve eaten the food, smoked the weed, had the drinks and done everything.” His motto in life sounds like it comes straight off the pages and out of the mouths of one or any of his characters. “I am the sum of the people I’ve met and the places I’ve been. In real life, stories and song.”

For Bruns, it’s not about second chances, but about second acts. His life both on and off the page has been literally filled with what iconic mystery writer Dashiell Hammett claimed was “the stuff dreams are made of.”

On being remembered after he’s gone, he simply states, “I don’t care if they remember me. I hope that the books are still in print and they’re still enjoying the travel and the adventures.”

Bruns has penned no less than seven novels in his third series, Stuff, which follows clues and leads down dark alleys of two private investigators—James Lessor and Skip Moore. The first,

I’d like to believe him. Because he’s one hell of nice guy and a great writer. But I also know that he’s a liar getting ready to meet his fellow writers at his Friday poker game.

“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.” —E.L. Doctorow

Education MATTERS By Ryan G. Van Cleave

BOOKER HIGH SCHOOL’S COMMITMENT TO STORY

When John Timpe and his family moved to Sarasota, he sought job opportunities where he could help students develop as writers. After all, that’s what he did for nearly a decade as a teacher at the University of North Florida and he found it profoundly rewarding. Then in 2016, he learned about Booker High School’s Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) programs along with their principal, Dr. Rachel Shelley, and her commitment to quality writing and effective storytelling. “High school students have important stories to tell,” she explains, “and, often at this age, they honestly just need that outlet. Writing gives students voice to their dreams and doubts, and it encourages them to share their views and ideas.” With a principal so in line with what Timpe hoped for—and a $58 million state-of-the-art facility that features first-rate dance, art, and digital design studios—he accepted a fulltime teaching position there that started in early 2017. Timpe’s years of editing and writing for the Tampa Bay Times and the Florida Times-Union served him well since the initial opportunities he found at BHS were journalism electives and general writing courses, where students needed to learn how to write clearly and effectively in order to pass the statewide FSA exam. But soon enough, Timpe was asked to support the Digital Film & Motion Design program through teaching screenplay writing. “It’s all about developing scenic narrative as opposed to summary narrative,” he explains about the difference between writing screenplays versus, say, what’s often found in a short story or novel. “My goal is to help them understand that you’re showing and not telling. This format of creative 92

writing is fantastic for that. It’s also great for developing empathy.” Indeed, students who try creative writing quickly learn that so much of life is beneath the surface. What a great lesson for an entire generation—there’s more to every situation than what meets the eye. A number of the students in the VPA programs already love writing—thanks, in large part, to Booker Middle School’s beloved creative writing teacher, Joanna Fox, who created the incredibly popular creative writing class she calls the “Dragonfly Café.” Timpe proudly says, “I have a Dragonfly Café mug on the shelf in the room where I teach film and screenplays.” Many of Fox’s students go on to BHS and want to continue to express themselves in writing. While the VPA program doesn’t yet support a creative writing program, the students are finding writing and story-making opportunities aplenty regardless. A little over two years into his career at BHS, two-thirds of Timpe’s classes are now screenplay writing, and one-third journalism and other creative writing electives. That suits him well since he subscribes to Golden-Age-of-cinema filmmaker Billy Wilder’s idea about the importance of story. “Eighty percent of a motion picture is writing,” Wilder claimed. Stories are deeply embedded in our culture. They help us build strong relationships. In many ways, one might argue that people rely on the power of stories on a daily basis far more than, say, trigonometry. That interest in effective storytelling is translating into student success, such as the number of Digital Film & Motion Design program graduates who end up going to college, including one

A student who took one creative writing elective for fun—and then got hooked on writing stories—is now working with Timpe on a screenplay as a senior honors project. And most recently, there are the four seniors in the Digital Film & Motion Design program who wrote and created Into the Storm, a documentary that played at the 2019 Sarasota Film Festival and was considered “the most buzzed-about film” at the festival. The full-length film tells the story of the 1966-67 Booker High School Tornado basketball team, perhaps the most dominant sports team in Florida history, as well as how desegregation forced BHS to close for three years and led to a student uprising. Folks with ties to other film festivals are talking to the program about adding the much-heralded Into the Storm to their own events. “This is the first year where students have produced a feature-length documentary,” Timpe explains. “We might not come across the same situation every year. Sometimes you need an hour to properly tell a story, and some years it’s told best at 20 or 25 minutes.” Part of being a good storyteller is recognizing the organic shape and size of your material and how best to convey it to an audience. That’s one of the many skills Timpe and his counterpart Lori Burton and adjunct instructor Chandler Howard are emphasizing. One of the biggest challenges that so many teachers face is how hard the students can be on themselves. Timpe says, “They come in and see peers who are really talented, and they tell themselves, ‘I’ll never be able to do this.’” At BHS, the teachers work hard to stop a defeatist attitude and replace it with an empowering work ethic. “There’s no lightning strike from the heavens that imparts

the gift of story on you,” Timpe adds. “The truth is that it’s work. You get up and grind through it even when you’re not feeling it. But incrementally, over time, it gets done.” When this past school year started, there were 42 students total in the Digital Film & Motion Design program, with only 4 seniors. The film part of the program was just added three years ago, and so they’ve only recently had four full grade levels operating at one time. While the interest in that program will surely grow thanks to the success of Into the Storm, the practical restriction of limited workstation space cap it at 20 students per grade level. The number one thing Timpe thinks others should realize is that the students at BHS are often overcoming challenges before school every morning that most of us couldn’t believe. Despite all that, their work with stories is a gift that shows students new ways of looking at themselves and the world. It informs who they are and what they’re capable of. It’s a way of living that insists one pay attention, ask questions, and engage. “It’s hard to pin down just one item that I’m most proud of when it comes to our students and the stories they create,” notes Dr. Shelley. “Our Booker students are such thoughtful, natural writers.” Timpe furthers this thought, saying, “What they’re learning about writing is preparing them for a better future. That’s an exciting thing to be part of.” F O R M O R E IN F O R M AT IO N

Meet Artist

KENDAL KINER

Have you ever known anyone who saw an ugly mounted fish on a wall and had it lead them to a complete career change? Well, that’s exactly what happened to Kendal Kiner of My Fish Out of Water.

For 25 years she was a teacher and raised her three children. She always loved art, but never had time to pursue it. Shortly after retirement, she bought a lakehouse in Georgia. Inside hung a large, drab, stuffed Grouper mounted in the living room. Kendal decided to take it down and paint it. “I had no plan or idea of how I would paint it,” Kendal said. “I just dove in and, voila...everyone, including me, loved it! It was so unusual, friends and family found me other taxidermy fish to paint.” Kendal also paints on other coastal items, including horseshoe crabs and even alligator heads, but the fish are her favorite to paint. She works on original ideas and will customize fish for clients. “I have always loved the arts and nature, two of my biggest passions in life,” she said. “Growing up with a forest for my backyard and living near lakes taught me to love and appreciate nature. It has always been my place of peace.” Now her peace is inside The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime, an indoor market filled with other artists and eclectic finds. Open Thursday through Saturday from 10 until 3 p.m. at 821 Apricot Ave., Sarasota. 98

InHEALTH STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT CURVES By Alissa Shulman, M.D, F.A.C.S

I consider down-to-earth, frank information to be the best kind. Regardless of whether the interest in a procedure is for reconstructive or for a cosmetic surgery, it is always necessary to assess the patient’s general “shape” (both bone structure and soft tissue). It is important to truly understand the limitations of one’s shape. Some people are “long waisted” and some are “short waisted.” There are many options to create the illusion of the desired body shape. Adding fat (fat grafting) or subtracting fat (liposuction) can actually alter your shape. A breast reduction or lift (mastopexy) can create the look of a longer torso. With regard to padding (fat), the doctor needs to define it as either subcutaneous (under the skin) or visceral (around your internal organs). Both types of fat influence your overall shape and appearance. What most people don’t realize is that your doctor can only influence

subcutaneous fat either surgically with liposuction or possibly non-surgically with Coolsculpt. The more visceral fat you have, the rounder (apple body) the shape. The more external fat, the curvier the shape (pear shape). Diet and exercise

“What most people don’t realize is that your doctor can only influence subcutaneous fat either surgically with liposuction or possibly nonsurgically with Coolsculpt.”

help reduce all fat, but they are the only way to reduce visceral fat. Some prospective patients do the “grab test” to explain what they want. They grab a “chunk” of what they believe is excess fat; however, in reality, it is mostly skin. Excess skin can only be removed with surgery. In fact, if you can grab it and there is little fat, non-surgical techniques are unlikely to be effective. Of course, with any skin excision, there will be a scar. A scar is permanent, but will become less visible with time. Your best option is to speak with your plastic surgeon, who should be Board Certified, and be open to multiple options and opinions. Plastic surgery is as much an art as it is a science. Alissa Shulman, M.D., F.A.C.S Sovereign Plastic Surgery 1950 Arlington St., Suite 112 Sarasota, FL 34239 941.366.5476 www.sovereignps.com

THREE RIVETING NOVELS TO KEEP YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT SEEKING HYDE By Thomas Reed Seeking Hyde, the debut novel from Sarasota author Thomas Reed, tells the story behind Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous horror story, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which earned the author great fame and fortune. Seeking Hyde sticks quite closely to Stevenson’s biography, and Reed’s background—witness 20 years of exploring, teaching, and writing about the life and times of Stevenson—makes him the ideal person to engage in such a creative exploration. What’s interesting to note is that while Stevenson intended his horror story to be an act of moral contrition, it has been accused of inspiring one of the bloodiest series of events in all of English history—the Jack the Ripper murders. Indeed, exploring that irony and its complexities is at the heart of this novel, admits Reed in the back matter of this book. The cat-and-mouse ending between Stevenson and Jack will surely delight fans of the thriller genre. And those who love historical stories will doubtless find this well-researched account of Victorian England to be compelling and full of authenticity.

SKY WITHOUT STARS: SYSTEM DIVINE BOOK 1 By Jessica Brody & Joanne Rendell If you like Les Miserables, then this clever reimagining of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece might just be for you. It’s the story of three teens from wildly divergent backgrounds who deal with the looming threat of revolution on the French planet Laterre that’s full of seediness, darkness, and power plays. That’s right, the “French planet,” because Sky Without Stars is a science fiction dystopian novel yet it somehow retains the sense of an old-world setting, too. Part of the charm of this book is how the multiple points of view keep the story

arts&culture from being too locked into a single aspect of the incredibly complex world these youths face. And after all, who doesn’t enjoy a bittersweet love triangle, even IF it’s set in space? Plus there are all sorts of themes in this hefty read beyond love, such as fate, injustice, and freedom. Meet Chatine, the thief. Marcellus, an agent of the powerful Regime. And Alouette, who’s spent most of her life underground as part of a secret society of women committed to protecting the remnants of written language, which is largely forgotten by the world above. All have their own goals and aspirations, and together their destinies will shape the future of an entire planet. Sky Without Stars is the first in the System Divine series, and let’s be clear—it’s a fine story and a grand setup for what promises to be an exciting larger tale about those who survived the fall of the First World and found a new home on twelve planets lit up by three suns. Though it’s a bit light on the science side, this book is highly recommended. Rating:

BLOOD OATH By Linda Fairstein Fairstein’s work as head of the (largely male) sex crimes unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office for more than two decades has informed her mystery novel series starring Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor Alexandra “Alex” Cooper. Fairstein’s 20th novel in the series, Blood Oath, continues to display her behind-the-curtains knowledge of the D.A.’s office and reveals her vast understanding of a host of compelling New York settings. Blood Oath has two stories at its heart. One is a cold case about a woman who claims to have been raped a decade earlier by a prominent official during a big federal trial. The other is about a young defense attorney who’s attacked just steps from the courthouse. She’s rushed to the hospital only to disappear without a trace the very next day. It’s up to Alex to uncover the truth of both situations and find out how they might be connected.

Along with Martin Cruz Smith (author of Gorky Park), Fairstein was honored in April 2019 with a Grand Masters Award by the Mystery Writers of America, adding their names to a list that includes Alfred Hitchcock, Sue Grafton, Stephen King and Agatha Christie. That honor was rescinded two days later when numerous members of the organization criticized the choice because of her involvement in the “Central Park Five” case. (Just Google one of oodles of stories about that to learn more, if you’re so inclined.) But the fact remains that Fairstein’s writing was deemed worthy of such an honor. If you’d like to determine for yourself how deserving her writing is—sixteen of the books in this series have debuted on the New York Times bestseller list, after all—check out Blood Oath and see. A TASTE OF HISTORY

Now Cafe L’Europe

By Rick Dakan I was born and raised in Sarasota, and grew up in a Sarasota School of Architecture home. I’ve always found the area’s quirky architectural history fascinating, and while I love some modern architecture, there’s a soft spot in my heart for the quasi-Spanish and neo-Mediterranean styles that dominated the city back in the 1920s. So I thought this month would be the a good time to visit some classic structures that now serve excellent food.

Local legend and circus magnate John Ringling bought up much of the island in 1917 and started developing it into the residential and commercial circle we know today. In 1925, with the help of some circus elephants for hauling timbers, he oversaw the Ringling Causeway that links that circle to the rest of Sarasota.

used as a restaurant. In the 1940s, it was the Coconut Palms Restaurant, and in the 1950s, it was the popular Colombi Italian Restaurant before becoming the fine dining icon (Cafe L’Europe) that it is today.

The continental cuisine fine dining restaurant Cafe L’Europe dates back to 1973, but the historic building began as the real estate office of John Ringling himself as he oversaw the key’s development. He was reputed to have sat on its front porch and watched his circus performers practice their acts a short distance away. After Ringling, the building was

1216 1st Street, Sarasota 941.445.5660 Tues–Thur, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Fri–Sat, 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Do you remember Ringling Towers? That iconic bayfront building that stood empty for years before its final destruction? Now it’s where The Westin resides, one of many modern high-rises that have all but erased the 1920s-era Spanish-eclectic architecture that used to define downtown. Fortunately, right across the road there’s a prime example that has managed to survive: the former Sarasota Times building, now the new restaurant Sage. Architect Dwight James Baum oversaw many of the signature Sarasota structures of the 1920s, including the Sarasota County Courthouse, the Sarasota Times building, and most famous of all, John and Mable Ringling’s fabulous Ca d’Zan mansion. The building later became an office for Owen Burns’ citrus business and eventually housed the briefly flourishing Ceviche restaurant several years back. Now Sage has breathed new life into a beautiful structure that might be a little small for a modern newspaper but is pretty enormous by downtown restaurant standards.

Sage

The restaurant has gotten a modern remodel inside, and a menu that’s “seasonal and globally inspired, combining fresh ingredients and cooking styles from around the world.” It’s unlikely that the city founders in the 1920s would’ve recognized what “vegan and gluten-free friendly” meant, but the modern diner can enjoy fine cuisine while admiring the view of the every-changing Sarasota skyline from the excellent roof-top deck.

Burns Court

Owen Burns was no John Ringling. However, back in the 1920s he owned most of downtown Sarasota and has certainly left his mark. When I was a kid growing up in Sarasota, Burns Court was not the best of neighborhoods, but in recent decades the quaint block of Mediterranean Revival bungalows have returned to their upscale roots and are a well-preserved slice of local architectural history. Burns lived at 431 Burns Lane. Just a few steps away and named for Owen Burns himself is Owen’s Fish Camp (516 Burns Court, 941.951.6936. Sun– Thu, 4:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., Fri–Sat: 4:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.), a high-end casual restaurant that specializes in seafood. Situated in a refitted classic wood Florida home, Owen’s has a great old-Sarasota feel different from the surrounding bungalows, but equally nostalgic. For fine dining in those Mediterranean Revival buildings, there couldn’t be a more appropriate Italian Fusion cuisine than that of Amore Restaurant (446 Pineapple Ave., 941.383.1111, Tues–Sun: 4:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.), which is a fine dining experience with a menu that reflects both the old and new wealth of downtown Sarasota.

Laughing MATTERS THE ONE ABOUT BEING A WRITER By Ryan G. Van Cleave | Illustrations by Darcy Kelly-Laviolette

S

o, an investment banker, a corporate lawyer, and a writer all walk into a bar. . .

With a setup like that, you sort of expect a zinger punchline, right? But I’m the writer in this equation, and the other two folks are my pals Mike and Dave (no, not the ones in the movie who desperately need wedding dates). And this setup is no joke at all, but rather what happened last Thursday at a Main Street drinkery in the almost-wee hours of night. You might also think (cue the Sesame Street “One of these things is not the other/one of these things just doesn’t belong” song) this month’s column is about the likely income disparity between us. Nope, that’s not the story here, though in all likelihood, both of them carry more 20s in their wallets than I do singles. We order our drinks (Patron, Grey Goose, and my Coors Light), and then Mike gives me the stink eye. “You’re doing it,” he says. I say, “Huh? What?” To which he replies: “Writing.”

He’s correct—I’m thinking about how to use a sandy-haired, middle-aged investment banker in my new YA thriller. But I lie, saying, “Nuh-uh.” Dave chimes in with, “You’ve got that I’m-writing-a-novel look. It’s the same look Alfie [his Yorkipoo] gives me when I crack open a can of Purina One. Only with less drooling.” I consider fighting them on this, but why bother? They’re right. I’m a bit like James Thurber, I guess, the cartoonist, humorist, and writer for The New Yorker, who famously said: “I never quite know when I’m not writing. Sometimes my wife comes up to me at a party and says, ‘Dammit, Thurber, stop writing.’ She usually catches me in the middle of a paragraph.” So, I stare at my buddies and proudly say, “Yes, I’m a writer. What’s YOUR superpower?” Then I’m reaching for my omnipresent notebook to jot down ideas on how to market that phrase on a t-shirt to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars of profit. They burst into laughter.

insider Writers and artists have long suffered the slings and arrows of Those Who Don’t Get It. I want to tell them the truth, that being a good writer is 2% talent, 2% luck, and 96% not getting sucked into internet time-wasters. I want to tell them the pain of writer’s block, when even my imaginary friends won’t speak with me. I want them to think I’m a wee bit quirky and maybe a touch “dangerous” by admitting that I became a writer so I could finally give all those voices in my head something productive to do. Instead, I offer my buddies a joke (my sidekick character in the new novel is a nonstop joke cracker, a real yukster, so I’m loaded for bear in the ha-ha department). I put down my beer and say, “What’s green and has wheels? Grass. I lied about the wheels.” I’m all about the follow-through when I commit to something, so I give them one more—the same thigh-smacker my sidekick delivers to guffaws at a PTA meeting. “Why do you smear peanut butter on the road? To go with the traffic jam.” Then comes That Moment—where my pals move onto talking about mortgages or the bite radius of a velociraptor or whatever it is people talk about when I’m zoning out to think about a writing project versus paying attention. That’s what writers do, I realize. We live entirely in our own world, where the rules are just different. Like when my wife says, “I don’t see how helping with the dishes is going to burn up your creative energy,” and I act like she’s asking me to French kiss an anteater. Or when my neighbor invites me to a backyard cookout, and while she asks me how I want my burger done, the grammarian in me starts to giggle at the “well done, well-done, or well, done” possibilities. My pals order another round and then Mike says, “It must be nice not having a real job.” Though Dave finally admits, “I always thought I’d write a book someday when I retire and have time to kill.” And just like that, I decide to change chapter 45 so that when my protagonist whips out an M203 Grenade Launcher, the only two people who get blasted to smithereens are named Ted Mike and Brandon Dave. One’s a dentist banker and one’s a private detective lawyer. “Yeah,” I tell them while tossing back my head and laughing maniacally. On the inside. On my outside, I just smile and say, “Being a writer is the best.”
