Hamm) that she loves him. It’s a pivotal moment in the wildly popular TV series. Despite countless liaisons with leggy beauties, Don Draper has been desperate for the one thing that seems to elude him: true love. And hearing those three potent words may be the most powerful thing that has happened to Draper on the show. At just 14 years old, Kiernan Shipka is not only a phenomenal actress who has grown up in television’s new golden age; she is also much smarter and savvier about the world than you'd expect from someone her age. For this issue, she joins many other “wonder kids” making a big name for themselves— all under the age of 28. We had director Gia Coppola (27) interview Nat Wolff (19), the star of her debut film Palo Alto, based on the book by James Franco. We visited Google to talk with YouTube hotshot Bing Chen (27), who propels online entrepreneurs like Michelle Phan into stardom while chasing his own dream of becoming the next Walt Disney. We ventured to the Chelsea studio of creative agency Sagmeister & Walsh, where art director Jessica Walsh (27) creates innovative, award-winning design. We also chatted with Out of Order Editor in Chief Dorian Grinspan (21), who juggles classes at Yale with publishing one of the most interesting pop-culture periodicals on newsstands. And we talked to Katherine Schwarzenegger (24), who has already penned her second book, this time about what to do when you get out of college. One piece of advice to take from Katherine’s career thus far: writing a book when you graduate from school is definitely a smart way to get ahead. Great news! Artist Donald Robertson, who we profiled at home in our Interior Design issue last month, is now contributing a monthly column, “Tongue in Chic,” chronicling the month’s style news in a way only Robertson can. His witty, colorful and inimitable drawings and sculptures are highly addictive (follow him on Instagram: @DonaldDrawbertson). I have one in my living room, and the illustration he did of moi in a Miley Cyrus Bangerz concert T-shirt (above) will soon hang above my office desk. Welcome to SCENE, Donald. Stay chic,

LIQUID COURAGE TEQUILA MEETS WHISKEY
Milenio, the new tequila from 1800, is aged more than a decade and finished in cognac barrels, lending it a richer flavor more traditionally associated with whiskey. It’s perfect for drinking while stubbornly shivering on your balcony because it’s spring, dammit—and at a certain point one wants to be outside. Also, you'll want to keep the sleek bottle somewhere visible. Show off.

BrightEyed Girl
Italian-American singer/songwriter Ariana DiLorenzo sees the world through rose-colored glasses Text by Eliza Krpoyan photography by ben kulo
“Recently I’ve taken to describing it as dance music catharsis,” Ariana DiLorenzo says of her band Ariana & the Rose. “I want people to be dancing so hard and crying, and feeling so good afterwards— like they just got out of the sauna or something.” This month, the 24-year-old Long Island native kicks off touring for her newly debuted EP Head vs Heart in the U.K. She jokes, “Whenever I write what I feel is a good song, not about love, I feel a small accomplishment, like ‘yeah, I’m writing about other things.’” But while titles like “Heartbeat” and “Love Me, Hate Me” might sound like they are only about personal relationships, DiLorenzo explains they are also about professional ones. “I was going through a time when I had to start making decisions for myself and couldn’t allow other peoples' opinions to influence me,” she explains. “The songs are a mishmosh of all of that stuff going on.” DiLorenzo says that the “Rose” part of the band’s name comes from her Italian grandmother. “My whole family—everyone’s middle names—are named after my grandma. All of my cousins’ middle names are Rose, my middle name is Rose and my dog’s middle name is Rose. I think that was one step too far, but whatever,” she laughs. When it came time to name the project, it seemed like a natural choice, though she did consider a few others. “I had some really terrible ideas before that, like ‘Ariana and the Starfish’.” With her music as infectious as her effervescent personality, you won’t want to miss her upcoming Soho House performance in June. Until then, her album is available on iTunes. 18 scene magazine

a brooklyn bed and breakfast brings the country to the city Text by Michael Hafford
Urban Cowboy, the 1980 movie directed by James Bridges and starring John Travolta, is more or less a transplant of Saturday Night Fever to Texas. Piggybacking on the success of Travolta’s career-launching hit, Cowboy brought Travolta to the Lonestar state and had him put on a different set of duds to reprise a version of his New York dandy persona. Urban Cowboy, the 2014 bed and breakfast developed by Lyon Porter and designed by Porter and Renee Mee, reinvents the spirit of its namesake film, bringing a taste of rural upstate New York to the Lorimer L-train stop in Williamsburg. “Urban industrial meets luxury townhouse living meets the Adirondacks," Porter says of the space, and he’s dead-on. The dominant building material is pinewood, from the dark-stained exterior to the master bedroom's reclaimed barn doors to Konoono, the Adirondack cabin in the backyard. Everything is intensely curated down to the bathroom wallpaper and Viking kitchen appliances, exuding a comfortable-in-its-skin luxury that sometimes takes generations to achieve. Lyon envisions the Cowboy as a space for free-flowing conversation and camaraderie—where guests can arrive as strangers and leave as friends. Want to know what there is to do in New York? Ask innkeeper Jersey Banks or Porter’s friends and acquaintances, who he seems sure will be in and out for dinner parties. Guests, of course, will be welcome to join. “Brooklyn is now the coolest place in the Western Hemisphere,” Porter says. Now, he's bringing a touch of country to the borough, and he's doing it with the materials of a pinewood derby racer.

So you’re out, kid. May 5 was your release date after serving approximately 17 years for the killing of Angel Melendez, which you carried out with “Freeze” (a.k.a. your roommate, Robert Riggs, who’s already free) in one of the most heartless crimes of the decade. In some kind of drug-hazed fight, the two of you used a hammer, a bottle of Drano, a pillow and—the final prop—a box full of body parts, before you ran around crying victim and/or blabbing about what you’d done, knowing that your war-painted acolytes would protect their icon. Some party, huh? You not only killed Angel, you basically murdered nightlife because, as Mayor Giuliani kept looking for ways to crack down on clubs so they became safe for tourists and community boards, you gave him every reason to put further restraints and make going out an exercise in constantly looking back to see who’s watching your every move. In fact, you made it very uncool to go out at all, especially dressed with any flamboyance, because the association was with a hateful, grisly act of violence that was substance-fueled and totally demented. It was years until people were able to dress up and laugh again, and if you find the nightlife still a little too restrained when you reenter it, you mainly have yourself to blame! But your other immediate actions are what concern people since you’re now able to pursue an actual future as the alternately dreaded and appreciated-despite-it-a Michael Alig. I’d actually like to get together and have a talk since I’m no hypocrite—I followed your every move all those years, put my name on your invites, and defended the club kids’ sense of cathartic liberation on various talk shows, in between criticizing you when you went too far or behaved too crudely. I was sort of the elder statesman of the group—someone who was privy to everything

ON REAL ESTATE The average apartment price increased in Manhattan due to an uptick in high-end new development closings. Despite lower inventory, there were 25 percent more closings reported in the first quarter than a year ago. At just over $1.7 million, the average Manhattan apartment price set a new record, 7 percent higher than the previous quarter and 30 percent higher than a year ago. The first quarter of 2013 was a relatively weak quarter, due to the rush of high-end, tax-related closings at the end of 2012. The median price of $935,000 for the first quarter of 2014 was also 7 percent higher than the previous quarter, and 18 percent higher than a year ago. Cooperative prices were strong, averaging $1.22 million, 6 percent above the prior quarter and 23 percent more than during the first quarter of 2013. The condominium average price was $2.37 million. The new development condominium average price was $3.18 million, 11 percent higher than the prior record. Strength was also clear in the resale market, where the average price of $1.477 million was 19 percent higher than a year ago. Low levels of inventory combined with strong demand translate into price increases. It is a fact that when apartments are properly and justifiably priced they are selling quickly. If not, they can linger on the market for some time and typically never achieve the high end of their value range. HALL F. Apartment Perks: A grand, triple-mint pre-war residence reinvented by the esteemed architect Patrick Carmody. Everything contained within these expansive walls—from the finest marble flooring to the plaster bas-relief on the ceiling—is of top-quality material and historically accurate. The formal spaces—library, dining and living rooms—form a stunning enfilade, but the highlight of the unit is the sunny western exposure onto Madison Avenue. That’s not to mention the two kitchens or the bathrooms (five-and-a-half of them) with Waterworks, Lefroy Brooks and P.E. Guerin fixtures. With a stunning testament to luxury in the clouds of the Upper East Side, what isn’t there to like about this property? Neighborhood Perks: Located in the heart of the Upper East Side, this apartment is steps from iconic shopping, world-class museums and the best schools in New York City.
