just weeks later, I was in Los Angeles on set with Joe shooting our April cover with photographer Easton Schirra and stylist Avo Yermagyan. Writer Michael Hafford hung out with Joe while he deejayed at the Hollywood club Bardot and later met him for lunch at Soho House, discovering that Joe is much more than just a former Jonas Brother. Like all successful pop stars, Joe is evolving, changing and remixing his image and music. His next solo album will show the world (and gazillions of teenage fan girls) exactly who the real Joe Jonas is. Like pop stars, interior design is in constant flux. I’m forever editing my “stuff”—moving furniture and art around to reflect my mood. For our special interiors issue, photographer Peter Murdock paid house calls to three very stylish homes. Artist Donald Robertson is my current obsession (I relocated my Warhol soup can to make room for a drawing he did of me with pals Mickey Boardman and Lynn Yaeger, see above). The house Robertson shares with his family in Larchmont is truly living art—from his colorful, cheeky and incredibly chic drawings and sculptures crafted from shopping bags and walnut shells to his wife Kim’s impeccable decorating. Design guru Michele Varian and musician husband Brad Roberts' Downtown loft is an ever-changing, well-curated celebration of curiosities. You could spend all day in it, and your eyes would still crave more. And fashion designer Lauren Moffatt’s duplex on the Upper East Side sheds light on the mother of two behind the graphic, vibrant clothing brand. Seeing how someone lives is truly a window into their personalities, and these three homes are fascinating, engaging and incredibly fun. Speaking of fun, we have our European runway report on page 40. From Jeremy Scott’s fast food fashion debut at Moschino to the ginormous Chanel supermarket Karl Lagerfeld erected inside Paris’ Grand Palais to Nicolas Ghesquière’s first collection for Louis Vuitton, we are front row and center with every look you must see. For his over-the-top Chanel show, Lagerfeld created everyday items with a double-C twist. There was even a welcome mat that read “Mademoiselle Privé.” Now if I could just have that for my doorstep, my interior design itch would be scratched—at least for today. Peter Davis Editor In Chief

Liars: Unravel the Rainbow music meets west coast conceptualism Text by Shana Nys Dambrot photography by ben cope Since emerging from the primordial, interdisciplinary goo of the prestigious CalArts art programs more than a decade ago, Liars has been blending pop and punk to create sparkling albums that exude an ironic optimism. Angus Andrew is the lead vocalist, Aaron Hemphill is on keys, and Julian Gross plays drums. The Los Angeles-based trio make their own album art, record covers, packaging and videos. “It’s a cross-curriculum super shop!” Andrew beams. Their seventh record, Mess, is as much about art as it is about music. Rainbow yarn visually connects everything from the album’s cover to the singer’s own bow tie. The colorful motif was inspired by laid-back, hands-on conceptualists like Urs Fischer and John Baldessari, who taught at CalArts, where the trio met. The school encouraged its students to branch out and take classes in music, animation, graphic design and poetry. “[The professors] taught you to think about why you are doing or making whatever it is,” Gross explains. “That it’s not all about beauty and proficiency—sometimes it’s not even about the result.” At the time, Andrew and Gross shared a photography studio, and Hemphill worked at a record store. Andrew and Gross remember Hemphill dragging around “a steamer trunk of CDs” and playing classic L.A. bands like Suicide. The friends quickly began to influence each other. Andrew even conceived of a photography project about a fictional band. No one made music; they only produced the associated ephemera. Now, having a real band is what allows them to tie it all together—this time, with multicolored thread.

ON REAL ESTATE Carnegie Hill is a neighborhood on the Upper East Side of Manhattan known for its intimate village-like environment with cafĂŠs, restaurants, boutiques and book stores lining its streets. A wonderful place to call home with close proximity to the beauty of Central Park and all it has to offer. Boundaries extend from 86th Street on the south side to 96th Street on the north and from Fifth Avenue (Central Park) on the west side to Third Avenue on the east. The Carnegie Hill Historic District was designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in July 1974 and expanded in December 1993. Carnegie Hill Neighbors, an organization that seeks to preserve the village environment, spurred creation of the Historic District and actively monitors its well being. The neighborhood was named for the mansion that Andrew Carnegie built at Fifth Avenue and 91st Street in 1901. Today, the mansion houses the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, a branch of the Smithsonian Institution. The architecture of the neighborhood includes grand, prewar apartment buildings along Park and Fifth Avenues, brownstones with stoops, townhouses on the side streets, cooperatives, condominiums, and a handful of mansions. It is also home to the Jewish Museum, the National Academy of Design and the Dalton School. The median price for apartments in Carnegie Hill has risen 14 percent over the past year, to $1,525,000.

a HOME FOR THE AGES
Four splendid uptown residences, each offered through Paula Del Nunzio of Brown Harris Stevens Charles Ogden Mansion at 12 East 79th Street This townhouse is perfectly positioned on today's Gold Coast near Fifth Avenue. The Charles Ogden Mansion at 12 East 79th Street is built 28 feet wide. The grand original rooms in the front and rear remain open and intact, allowing the new owner to experience the full 28 feet in width in many of the main rooms. Comprising approximately 16,000 total square feet on seven levels, this mansion is unique in possessing an incomparable historical provenance and a location that can never be duplicated. CPH Gilbert Mansion at 57 East 64th Street A massive limestone townhouse in the style of Neo-Francois I with a magnificent four-story curved bay, the CPH Gilbert Mansion at 57 East 64th Street comprises 14,000 total square feet on seven levels. This home was originally designed to have the kind of scale, and ceiling height, in entertaining rooms sought today to display an art collection of major scale. It is a special benefit that the original plan of the architect is largely intact, and details in the rooms throughout have been restored with attention to historical accuracy. No other building by CPH Gilbert is on the market at this time, and it is unlikely that another will be available, making this mansion a rare opportunity. William Randolph Hearst Penthouse at 137 Riverside Drive Before moving to California, William Randolph Hearst lived with his family in New York City where he created this extraordinary home—a precursor to his famed San Simeon estate. The quintuplex at 137 Riverside Drive comprised floors eight through 12 and was the largest and most opulent apartment in the city. Two owners, Mr. Hearst and the present inhabitant, selected this unique location for their immense art collections and their families. The qualities that appealed to them—its extraordinary interior scale and size with exquisite terraces and magnificent views in every direction—await the next owner. The metropolitan living area, with a cityscape to fawn over, accompanies the versatile interior layout—a sunny living room that offers eastern and western exposures from five oversize windows and a spacious gourmet kitchen. The large, square, chic master bedroom also offers eastern and western natural lighting and a bountiful walk-in closet. The en suite bath is in glorious, original art deco style with a marble soaking tub and shower. A Chef Haven How to get a professional cook’s kitchen at home More than ever, people are looking to bring the experiences of the outside world into their own home. Whether it’s HD TVs replacing live sporting events or VOD replacing a trip to the Redbox, the trend is to have things on demand. Trending next are restaurant-quality meals from your very own kitchen. A gourmet kitchen is about top-of-the-line appliances but also topof-the-line design. A fully integrated kitchen will enhance your culinary experience, as well as your living-space satisfaction. “Ultimately, you want the cabinetry and appliances to be proportional to the space,” says Paula Cercere of GE. “Smaller appliances like an 18-inch dishwasher or a multifunctional model that saves space and provides flexibility are quite useful. The GE Monogram Advantium—available as a built-in wall unit or above-the-cooktop model—serves as a speed-cooking oven, convection oven, warming oven and even a toaster/broiler/proofer and is the ultimate in providing everyday convenience. Further, the GE Monogram 30-inch-wide Built-in Fully Integrated refrigerator includes a lower drawer that can be converted from a refrigerator to a freezer to a wine chiller at the touch of a button.” By installing custom panels, the refrigerator and dishwasher can seamlessly blend into adjacent cabinetry, making a smaller kitchen appear larger and more luxurious. Appliances have gotten smarter both in their functionality and in the ways we use them. Gone are microwave dinners and reheated pizzas of yesteryear. Healthy is in and here to stay. “The latest addition to the modern gourmet kitchen is the steam oven,” says Ellen Elias of Elgot Kitchens. “You can use it for baking, broiling and steaming food. It can replace a microwave.”
sc.0414.KitchenADVNC.indd 2
While appliances are an integral part of any kitchen, design plays just as large of a role. Dom Interiors creates expandable, customized spaces through the clever use of sliding boards and cabinets. “Kitchens are no longer behind closed doors,” notes Brian Jevremov of Dom Interiors. “They’re part of the overall space. They’re part of entertaining, dining and living. It’s a one-room kind of situation. How do you resolve having a kitchen that needs to be clean and in as much possible order? Many people hide the kitchen. Instead, we want to make this thing beautiful and functional. With our design, instead of moving things out and putting things away, you close it and walk away. A system of sliding boards cover your cooktop and sink and opens more space.” Dom Interiors, however, doesn’t stop there. It also provides solutions for hiding refrigerators and other major kitchen appliances inside of cabinets. “We have artwork done on the cabinets by a variety of fine and graphic artists,” adds Jevremov. “The refrigerator can disappear and become a piece of artwork. You can hide your kitchen and open it when you need it and be completely useful. Our designs couldn’t be more user-friendly and beautiful. We use a range of materials including wood, glass or whatever other materials you might want.” There you have it—tips on how to have a kitchen that is as practical as it is ready for the big screen.
