From cutting a rug with Geoffrey Rush to exploding toilets in the name of art, November takes me on a wild ride, beginning at black-tie benefits and ending at downtown discotheques—all in the same night: The month starts off with Mayor Michael Bloomberg enjoying his lame duck period at

The following night, I cross paths again with the mayor at The Museum of Modern Art’s for her mind-boggling variety of roles. “You remind me of an alien who landed in Scotland,” director Joon-ho Bong tells the crowd. Swinton happens to be celebrating her 53rd birthday Other guests include the Chanel party set: Vogue editrix Anna Wintour, Jessica Biel and David Bowie, who are treated to a performance by the newest teen crooner, Lorde. The next night, Cipriani 42nd Street plays host to the Phoenix House Fashion Award Dinner. Tory Burch, Estée Lauder’s John Demsey, Dennis Basso, Proenza Schouler’s 13

DJ Steve Porter spins tunes while I chat with Cho about her next move post-CNN. Details are top secret, but needless to say the iconic broadcaster isn’t going anywhere just yet. A few days later I'm at the British Tea Bash at American Cut in Tribeca. Big-name Brits Hamish Bowles and Stephen Fry are honored among their fellow countrymen, including Orlando Bloom, Alexa Chung, Tennessee Thomas, and Tali Lennox—and yes, they all really drink tea. Or is it gin? Male model Cory Bond brings a posse of friends before decamping to No. 8 where Princess Eugenie of York joins us to party into the wee hours. I trade Tribeca for the Upper East Side the following night to celebrate Vladimir Roitfeld’s new exhibit at his uptown project space at 5A East 78th Street. The exhibition, open until December 15th, features work by Clare Rojas. “I have been a big fan of Clare’s. As soon as I had the possibility to give her an exhibition in New York, I reached out with the help of my friend PC Valmorbida, owner of Prism Gallery in LA,” Roitfeld tells me. “After reaching out, I then went to visit Clare in San Francisco a few months back. We were both very excited to be working together; it’s a great opportunity.” Later on in the night I get the chance to chat with the artisan of the hour, Rojas, about the creative process behind her works. “For me, the process of making abstract imagery is about trying to understand and nurture my natural disposition and attraction to certain colors, shapes, patterns, lines, compositions, and allowing that instinct to be enough,” Rojas says. Roitfeld’s mom and sister, Carine and

Linda Fargo, Dennis Basso

Alexa Chung

Julia, are there to show support, and art types Jeffrey Deitch, Kelly Rutherford, Michael Avedon and Stephen Gan all stop by, along with playboy Stavros Niarchos to boot. I continue to travel with the art set (and Stavros) to Greenwich, Connecticut on Sunday afternoon where the Brant family hosts the opening of their new Julian Schnabel exhibit in the Brant Foundation Art Study Center. The exhibit includes Schnabel’s portraits of the entire Brant family, including Allison Brant. Brant family friends Christopher Walken, Benicio Del Toro, Calvin Klein, Debbie Harry, Tommy Hilfiger, Nicky Hilton, André Balazs, Patrick Demarchelier, Larry Gagosian, Simon and Michaela de Pury, Paul Sevigny and artist David Altmejd all make the trek from Manhattan to the spectacular converted stone barn gallery space. The exhibition is on view (by appointment only) until January 29th—it’s worth the trip! The following night unfolds as another whirlwind evening in the city. It kicks off with dinner at the Time Warner Center overlooking Columbus Circle for the Malaria No More International Honors 2013, where self-proclaimed pantsuit aficionado Hillary Clinton stops in to make a few remarks before yielding the floor to Ingrid Michaelson, who performs two songs including one with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. The Daily Show’s Jason Jones then

John Elkann

commandeers the microphone and rallies the crowd to raise over $1.2 million for Malaria No More. “One dollar saves one life. I encourage you to shop around, you can’t beat that,” Jones quips. T.R. Knight, Jessica Stam and Martha MacCallum all join in the cause. “I first became involved with Malaria No More when I interviewed Laura Bush on the first Malaria Day at The White House back in 2006, and I’ve been involved with them ever since,” MacCallum tells me during dinner. “I’ve gone on missions to hang nets in villages in Ghana. It’s a fabulous organization. I’m so happy to be supporting it.” I then race downtown to join the after-party at the Dia Art Foundation’s Fall Night Gala in the Meatpacking District. I make it in time to catch some wacky yet impressive performance art by music duo Matmos. I catch up with one half of the duo, M.C. Schmidt, before his performance. “Well, we’re going to throw things at a wall, and we’re going to rip out a toilet, arrive at a venue the toilet is already destroyed, so there’s a new twist to this tonight!” Johan

Debbie Harry

Lindeberg, Peter Marino, Lorenzo Martone, Diana Widmaier-Picasso, Ingrid Sischy, Leelee Sobieski, and Kate and Andy Spade all tune in. My final stop of the night is another after-party, this time at Tao Downtown for Spike Lee’s new film Oldboy. I set up camp with nightlife impresario Nur Khan who welcomes Olivier Theyskens and Ellen von Unwerth, fresh from the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Dinner. Lee and his buddy Samuel L. Jackson snack nearby before leaving the partying to the nightlife fixtures including Elizabeth Olsen, Game of Thrones’ Alfie Allen, Cory Kennedy and surprisingly enough, the 62-year-old Geoffrey Rush. After a couple nights off, I join the uptown set for The Society of Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center’s Associates Committee annual benefit hosted by Carolina Herrera, which raises $530,000 this year for pediatric sarcoma. Although more advertising is delivered online than ever before, print remains a powerful, tactile medium of permanent reference and value. In New York City, print advertising and publication are important options that remain especially viable. Print advertising must be repeated to be effective. In addition to the many exciting online options, many New Yorkers want to hold a publication in their hands, keep it on their table or nightstand, walk around with it and refer to it repeatedly. Magazines and newspapers delivered to residential buildings have great, targeted appeal and can be very effective advertising venues for that reason. Of course, all advertising and marketing should be done strategically and be of primary interest to the reader, whether it’s an online advertisement, a storefront window display with outdoor messaging, a search engine, or a print publication. Brown Harris Stevens believes in print as well as digital publishing. Our own publication, Important Residential Properties, is in its fourth year. For buyers and sellers it is the most up-to-date publication of current market inventory. Distributed in print eleven times a year to an annual circulation of 2.7 million readers, it is also online for readers who prefer the electronic version. We are committed to major print production in a consistent and timely manner.

Bringing All to Hudson Yards “The development of Hudson Yards brought much more than residential development to the area,” notes Ariel Tavivian, co-founder of the Tavivian Sporn Team at Douglas Elliman. “There are [now] tons of office and retail space, as well as parks and schools, which were very much needed.” In 2005, the New York City Department of City Planning and the MTA laid down the guidelines for the Hudson Yards development, rezoning nearly 60 blocks to Class A office space, housing units, hotels and retail space. The air rights were leased to Related Companies and Oxford Properties, two developers that are heading the development.

1,150,000 square feet of retail, 220,000 square feet of hotel, 120,000 square feet for school and a 100,000-square-foot cultural center. The first tower is set to be completed in 2015, in which retailer Coach will anchor a few hundred thousand square feet for its corporate headquarters. Luxury Along 11th Avenue “Gotham built the New Gotham in 1998, when the neighborhood was very different,” notes Melissa Pianko, executive vice president of development at Gotham Organization. “There were almost no luxury doorman buildings and there were limited restaurants. Today, it is a totally different story—10th Avenue is lined with great places to eat and drink [and] there have been more than 15,000 luxury residential units developed.”

Pianko notes that opening Gotham West, a 550-unit development at 550 West 45th Street, transformed the entire city block between 44th and 45th Streets east of 11th Avenue. The building offers apartments that range from studios to three-bedrooms with prices starting at $2,750 for an alcove studio. One-bedrooms start around $3,375, twobedrooms upward of $5,400 and three-bedrooms from $8,600. “With the opening of Gotham West Market this fall, we are going [to create] a day and night market featuring eight artisanal restaurants,” she adds. Restaurants that have signed include El Colmado, The Cannibal, Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop, and The Brooklyn Kitchen. The restaurant group behind downtown’s Saxon + Parole, AvroKO, will anchor the space with Genuine Roadside, its latest restaurant serving classic American roadside fare. “[Gotham West] is a prime example of a smart amenities package combined with

ground-floor retail that serves residents,” says Sid Whelan of the Whelan Grayson Group at CORE. Never Enough Luxury “The area is often seen as the ‘pulse’ of New York,” says Jackie Urgo, president at The Marketing Directors, noting recent developments including Strata at Mercedes House. Strata at Mercedes House, located at 550 West 54th Street, is led by Two Trees Management, who pulled in Enrique Norten to design a spiraling 32-story development. The upper 11 floors, known as the Strata, has little availability with rentals upward of $4,000 for a one-bedroom and nearly $8,000 for a three-bedroom. with the renovation of a former Verizon tower at 435 West 50th Street to create about 55 units across 100,000 square feet of space from the 10th to 17th floor, slated to open in 2014. Fortis Property Group and Wonder Works Construction Corp. are marketing 540West at 540 West 49th Street. Each of the two towers is set to span seven stories and offer loft-like and multi-level residences, culminating into 114 units in total. Unlike the other developments in the area, 540West is not a rental. Prices start in the upper $700,000 and lower $800,000 range for studios, with one-bedrooms pushing over $1 million and 1,150-square-foot penthouses breaking $2 million. “The list of developers who are actively developing or are in development planning stages in Hell’s Kitchen is a Who’s Who in the development world,” says McArdle. “Fortis Property Group and Wonder Works Construction are bringing 540West to life. Industry leaders have targeted this area for development.”

TOWN Residential, Bluerock Real Estate, Ismael Leyva Architects, David Collins Studio and Victor Homes came together to celebrate the launch of their collaborative new development, The Charles, Manhattan’s first full-floor high-rise condominium, at 1355 First Avenue on the Upper East Side. The event was held in the penthouse of The London Hotel, designed by David Collins Studio, which also designed the interiors in The Charles. The groups celebrated the launch and the property’s success: its first month saw 25 percent of the tower in contract and $73 million in revenue.

TOWN Residential raised its flag in the Meatpacking District from its new office, TOWN West Village, at the base of the High Line, where it is nestled among Manhattan tastemakers including the Diane Von Furstenburg and Stella McCartney boutiques, the Standard Hotel, Soho House, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Q&A with SUSAN DE FRANCA SCENE reached out to Susan de Franca, president and chief executive officer of Douglas Elliman Development Marketing, to discuss the integration of art and real estate. de Franca is leading Douglas Elliman in presenting its Penthouse Collection—over a dozen penthouse properties in New York and South Florida—at Art Basel in Miami Beach.

How do you integrate art into real estate? Art and real estate are inherently intertwined—both are creative endeavors that require inspiration, imagination, and the ability to execute a vision impeccably. Especially in recent years, where developers have taken to collaborating with top-tier architects and designers, real estate has been elevated to new heights; in bringing their imaginative visions and meticulous craftsmanship to real estate, these masters of their craft have engendered a new caliber of property and created these one-of-a-kind works of art. Like fine paintings, luxury real estate has proven to appreciate in value over time, and investors worldwide have taken note and begun to acquire these unique properties the same way they would a Monet or Picasso.

Tell us a little more about the Penthouse Collection. The Penthouse Collection represents some of the most extraordinary properties within our portfolio. Among the New York properties being represented are The Puck Penthouses in Soho; The Marquand, 11 East 68th Street on the Upper East Side; Tribeca’s The Sterling Mason at 71 Laight Street; 10 Madison Square West; The Schumacher at 36 Bleecker Street; 33 East 74th Street; and Walker Tower. We will also be presenting several South Florida properties, including the highly anticipated Faena House designed by Foster+Partners, Ian Schrager’s The Residences at The Miami Beach EDITION and a new development in Coconut Grove by The Terra Group and Related Group of Florida.

A number of those buildings are sided in all-glass walls. Is that a challenge? What’s the best way to showcase art in those buildings? Showcasing art can be a bit of a challenge with glass curtain wall buildings. Time Warner Center is a perfect example—it has these magnificent glass walls, but then has more limited wall space and therefore less room to hang art. So, our design solution was to include spacious galleries and hallways throughout the residences that would provide as much hanging space as possible, while leveraging the natural sunlight that pours in through the glass. These types of spaces require thoughtfully conceived layouts that bear these challenges in mind.

You mentioned a few properties in South Florida. What’s going on there? Among the South Florida developments we currently represent are The Residences at The Miami Beach EDITION, a collection of 26 residences conceived by Ian Schrager and designed by John Pawson, that have reinvigorated the Miami market and introduced a new caliber of living to the area in terms of both design and amenities and services. Another groundbreaking development that we’re currently working on in South Florida is Faena House, an 18-story residential property envisioned by Alan Faena and designed by Foster+Partners. Faena House is the first element of Faena Miami Beach, which is set to include the Faena Arts Center, an institution dedicated to celebrating contemporary art in all its forms, designed by Rem Koolhaas and OMA.

That’s great. What’s planned for Art Basel-Miami Beach?

sc.W13.Elliman.indd 2

Susan De Franca

Developers and purchasers of real estate are so often avid art collectors that a significant overlap occurs between the individuals who attend such highly curated art shows as Art Basel in Miami Beach, and those who are interested in the top-tier properties that we represent. There’s a level of discernment that carries over—a taste level, an eye for design and an attention to detail—and that informs the search and decision-making process when it comes to both art and real estate. These individuals not only recognize and appreciate—but require—inspired architecture, high quality finishes and thoughtfully conceived spaces. So to showcase the synergy between art and real estate, Douglas Elliman Development Marketing will present the Penthouse Collection in an exhibit located in the VIP Collectors Lounge.

THE COOKTOP ALL OTHER COOKTOPS WANT TO BE MASTERPIECE® SERIES COOKTOP The #1 ranked cooktop is lighting a heavenly fire under the status quo and the Star ® Burner is perhaps the single most iconic Thermador innovation. But the star shape isn’t just for show. The Star Burner delivers superior flame spread and a reduced cold spot for faster and more even heating. With 30-inch and 36-inch models to choose from featuring up to five Star Burners, there’s a Masterpiece Gas Cooktop designed to satisfy any cooking enthusiast or kitchen configuration.

A STAR FOR GOOD REASON In 1998, Thermador once again changed the shape and face of cooking with our patented Star Burner. Far surpassing the performance of conventional circular-shaped burners, Star Burners create a 56% longer perimeter than their round counterparts. This allows for more ports, greater flame distribution and superior heat coverage.

The design of the Star Burner offers greater heat coverage, and a smaller cold spot, making it ideal for any pan size.

THE MAN BEHIND THE BRAND AND INDUSTRY Founded by William E. Cranston, Thermador began as a manufacturer of electric items, most notably portable and built-in heaters. By 1932, Thermador established itself as a high-quality appliance manufacturer. In 1947, Cranston and engineer Fred Pence invented the first built-in wall oven and cooktop and introduced stainless steel to home appliances. Cranston was inducted into the National Kitchen & Bath Association Hall of Fame in 1989, and he is credited with launching the kitchen design industry.

voyeur ask annelise

Dear Annelise I can’t deny it anymore, winter is officially

upon us. Every year, I try to find the perfect stylish, season-appropriate footwear, and end up settling for ugly, clunky boots. What I’m dreaming of is a pair of fashionable, closed-toe shoes (no boots!) that are chic enough to wear with skinny jeans or a skirt, durable enough to withstand the slush or city winters, and comfortable enough that I can go sockless if the outfit requires. Be honest–do these shoes exist, or has the cold made me delusional? And, if they do exist, where oh where can I find them? Dearest Unhappy Feet I know just the shoe to make those toes tingly with excitement. With a touch of your cursor, you can go to NET-A-PORTER and order yourself a pair of CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund finalist George Esquivel’s signature leather brogues. Not only are they the most comfortable shoes you will ever slip your foot into, they look stellar with skirts, perfect with a skinny pant, and can easily weather the storms of the New York City streets. Best of all, they transition from winter walks on Madison Avenue to summer (sockless) skips in Central Park. In fact, if you’re looking for the perfect gift to make that special someone’s feet happy enough to dance away the winter blues, consider ordering a custom pair from Esquivel himself! Although it may cost you a dime or two, best to be a penny wise than be (120) pounds and shoeless.

Annelise Peterson

dear annelise I’m usually the one-guy-at-a-time kind of girl–which naturally means I’m in a dating rut. My friends tell me

that I should be a “defensive dater,” meaning even if I only really like one guy I should still date other men to keep my options open. My question is: How can I learn to play the field and still score some one-on-one time with the fella I actually like? Dearest Loyal Lady Libby I bet your friends suggest that you adopt a more defensive dating strategy so that you don’t change your Facebook status before you know more than what is posted on your partner’s

profile page. Your Fancy Fella may follow all the proper dating protocol on dates one, two and three, but he will begin to reveal characteristics of his personality on dates four, five and six that may or may not work for you. If you are one of those girls who get to “I do” before knowing what “death do us part” looks like, you only set yourself up for disappointment when your Knight in Shining Armor turns out to be another Let-down Larry. Although I applaud your single-track focus in a city on the prowl for the bigger better deal, if that exists, I suggest you keep your dance card open until your date proves that your red-riding heart is safe to introduce to your grandparents. There are a lot of wolves out there in sheep’s clothing. Make him show you that he is an emperor worthy of your throne and commitment. 110 SCENE MAGAZINE

YOU PREACH ABSTINENCE BUT DON’T SEEM TO “BELIEBE” IN IT YOURSELF. WHAT DO YOU BELIEBE IN, JUSTIN?

I’ll give you this much: You’re young. You’re 19. You’re developing in the public eye and a lot of what you do is magnified and exaggerated, to damaging effect.
