ben cope
Photographer Ben Cope’s striking images have appeared in Nylon, Flaunt, Wallpaper and Vogue Australia, to name a few. He shot David Lynch for SCENE’s July issue and photographed Moby at his house in Hollywood for this month’s cover story. He recalls first meeting Moby. “You might want to go around to the other door, there is a baby rattlesnake next to your foot.” Moby told Cope as he answered the door. “The baby rattler became the topic of conversation for the better part of my time at his house.” Cope remembers. “He devised plans and searched for items to help him remove the baby without harm to himself or the snake.”
peter murdock
For this issue, New York City-based photographer Peter Murdock captured the apartments of Alexandra Richards, Lisa Salzer, John and Christine Gachot and the studio of filmmaker Casey Neistat. “It’s endlessly inspiring to discover and capture homes designed around personal style,” Murdock says. He’s also photographed Betsey Johnson’s Upper East Side home and Nur Khan’s Chinatown loft for SCENE’s @home section. When he’s not behind the camera, Murdock can be found hunting down new locations around the world.
mark jacobs
Los Angeles based creative consultant Mark Jacobs has worked with the Gap, Target, Halle Berry and Santigold. As an editor and writer, he has contributed to V, Interview, The New York Times Magazine and GQ Style. Jacobs interviewed Moby at home for this issue. “I asked him about the house's sound system,” Jacobs says. “He told me that he listens to music on a modest iPod dock because that’s how most people will hear his music—not on grand superstar speakers.” 12 s c e n e m a g a z i n e n o v e m b e r 2 013

editor’s let ter
the interior design issue I was raised to know and care about interior design. My mother, Senga Mortimer, who has been an editor at House & Garden, Elle Decor and House Beautiful, has impeccable taste. The apartment I grew up in was classic, quirky and chic. It never felt stuffy—my scuffed-up skateboard seemed to belong on the floor of our library, which was stocked with vintage garden books and massive bronze sculptures. When I renovated and decorated my first real apartment in Tribeca, my mother schooled me in things like not choosing the “wrong green” and how to hide unsightly necessities like TV sets. I recently moved to a loft in Williamsburg and my mother’s influence is everywhere, even if our taste is different—I collect pop art; Mom bids on watercolors of unusual flowers. I definitely have the interiordesign itch. I am forever re-hanging art and when I travel, I rearrange hotel rooms and pack fabric from India to cover up an ugly chair or a hideous painting. My apartment says a lot about me—anal-retentive, obsessive shopaholic, weird sense of humor. For our Interior Design issue we visit many fascinating people at home, discovering much about who they are and how they live. Photographer Ben Cope and writer Mark Jacobs hung out with Moby in Los Angeles. The rooms of the prolific musician’s turreted house are well edited, modern and eclectic, much like his stellar new album Innocents. In New York, we made house calls with model and DJ Alexandra Richards, Lulu Frost designer Lisa Salzer, filmmaker Casey Neistat (get ready for a major dose of visual OCD), interior decorator Darren Henault and the Gachots, a design couple whose home is part art gallery, part toy store. Photographer Peter Murdock expertly captures each subject and their private space—illuminating the personality and design DNA of each home. After finishing our Interior Design issue, I raced home and started moving chairs and tables and

“I’m half a Birkenstock wearing potter, half a Lacoste-wearing squash player.”
Favorite designers: Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, Uniqlo and Mr. Turk. Style inspiration: A dash 1970s hippie, a dollop 1980s prepster. I’m half a Birkenstock wearing potter, half a Lacoste-wearing squash player. Most prized piece of clothing: I wear Uniqlo white skinny jeans every single day of the year. I collect: Lacoste polos. I’ve been wearing them since I was 13. I don’t think I’ll ever stop. I never leave home without: The Rolex my hubby Simon Doonan gave me for our anniversary a few years back. And hand sanitizer. It’s a dirty world. Right now I am coveting: A new pair of Tricker’s wingtips from Grahame Fowler’s sublime West Village shop. They’re solid, they’re singular, and if you resole them they’ll last longer than you will. Fragrance: Un-fragranced is my preference. If I could live in another decade, it would be: I’d split my time between the ’60s and the ’70s. I like the combo of mod and hippie, glam and groovy. My style in three words: Preppy, polished, potter.

The diminutive handbag designer’s space features chrome walls with white plaster hands stretching out of them. The hues represent the rainbow Mizrahi explains as she beams a dazzling smile. She appears perfectly poised in a marijuana print crop top, skinny sweatpants, heels and a leather jacket. knoll’s antenna is up TEXT BY ELIZA KRPOYAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY DOROTHY HONG Sigi Moeslinger and Masamichi Udagawa are not your ordinary furniture designers. They don’t design pieces that you’ll find knockoffs of at Ikea. However, If you have ever purchased a metro card from a NY transit vending machine then you’ve already seen their work—they designed all of those kiosks. Now they’re working for Knoll. Udagawa explains that Knoll approached them because they were looking for someone who could create office furniture from a different perspective. “They didn’t want a collection that would be a continuation of what’s been done,” he explains. Their first project for Knoll was to design an office system for commercial spaces. What they realized is that “these pieces were not something we would ever have in a home,” Udagawa says of conventional office furniture. The duo looked at their vintage Knoll dining room and wondered, “Why can’t office furniture be like this? Elegant, pure, with a feeling of lightness? Something we would want for ourselves as well.” “There is a social component to coming into work,” says Moeslinger. “People can work from home, but why were they still choosing to come into the office. The answer is “for face to face encounters.” What the couple would need to do is create an office environment that would make people want to be in the office instead of working from home. Their designs—which are centered on how people behave—take into account the fact that the rise of the Internet means there’s less need to store paper. Since people can take their laptop from one desk to another, the workspaces should be flexible, and with all of the moving around in the office, the desks should be able to support various job functions. The final product was the Antenna Workspaces—desks with sleek sturdy legs (inspired by the highway) and storage space not necessarily for papers, but for peoples’ personal belongings, “like a helmet,” explains Udagawa. The ingenious duo has also designed a LED desk light—inspired by spiral wire—for both at home and an office environment. They also have designed a chair with a flip table fit for an iPad or laptop and have Toboggan seating in the works. For the first time, their pieces can be purchased at Knoll’s retail store, which opened in May and their e-commerce shop.

concert pianist jorge viladoms is not just a gorgeous face text by eliza krpoyan Though, his striking good looks and grayishblue eyes may make you wonder, there is more to concert pianist Jorge Viladoms that pleasingly meets the eye. For one thing, he speaks five languages fluently—Spanish, German, French, Italian and English. “All of my music vocabulary is in French, so I speak better French than Spanish,” he says. Since 2011 he has been teaching master’s classes at Lausanne Conservatory for Music in Switzerland, where he lives. “Music is about communication,” he explains. “Music in a way doesn’t exist. It comes and goes. It is not like a painting in a museum. You have to share it. So I try to share it by teaching it, through my concerts, and in a social way.” And Last year, Viladoms started Crescendo con la Musica Foundation. The organization provides children living in poverty in Mexico access to instruments and art education. “It is so great for their self-esteem,” he says. The foundation is also helping the musicians who are teaching the kids. “They are all Mexican and they will have a chance to take master Viladoms. With every concert he performs, he raises funds for the foundation and spreads the word for people to donate instruments. He has already collected 100 instruments that will be sent to the school Centro Educativo la Barranca in Mexico where classical music study is now a required course.

philip gorivvan As an interior designer, I am always looking for inspiration for my projects, as well as for the textiles and products I design. Travel is a great channel for creativity, and it helps that my family and I all love the opportunity to go to new places. This past summer, we had an opportunity to move to London, one of our favorite cities, and obviously a major world design center. The experience of actually living in London has been quite special; there is so much to discover on a daily basis, and its such a livable city. The other added advantage is that London is a wonderful spring board for travel all throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Recently we all went to Marrakech. Morocco is a very special place for many reasons, especially since my mother was born there, and grew up in Casablanca. There is nothing contrived about Morocco; it’s truly an authentic experience, from gorgeous desert sunsets and hearing the calls to prayer to the sights, sounds and smells of the souk. For me, its an incredible visual experience and I am particularly inspired by the myriad of vibrant colors, the architecture and the dedication to hand crafted products. This year, we stayed in a secluded riad in the Palmerie, Jnane Tamsna, which only added to the authenticity of our experience.

georgina chapman and keren craig We have always had a vision for Marchesa to be a full lifestyle brand and so the next natural step for us was to design a contemporary collection. When working on this collection we thought about unique silhouettes, prints, embellishment and fit so we could offer something new within the contemporary market. We wanted the collection to have a global attitude—for the woman who is comfortable navigating the world even if she is staying at home. Additionally, we have been able to translate our intricate Marchesa couture aesthetic into pieces with depth and character, but at a more accessible price point, which we are very excited about. The specific inspiration for the brand is a reflection of the many travels that we have experienced throughout our lives. We have been so lucky to have had the chance to travel to so many wonderful and inspiring places from Peru to India.

In 2002, Moby, the electronic music champion born Richard Melville Hall (he’s a descendant of Moby Dick author Herman Melville) released “We Are All Made of Stars.” The single followed the phenomenal success of his career-defining 1999 album Play. The track was heralded by a cinematic music video by director Joseph Kahn that featured Moby, then a consummate New Yorker, touring the dingy pop landscape of Los Angeles while dressed in a full astronaut costume. He was joined by a cartoonish cast of Hollywood-damaged personalities including O.J. Simpson murder trial witness Kato Kaelin, fallen child star Corey Feldman and film producer Robert Evans. Even Angelyne—the ingenious L.A. local who willed herself to fame in the ’80s with a billboard series of blonde, top-heavy selfies—played a role. She took “The King of Techno,” as he was then known, for a spin in her signature hotpink Corvette. 5 4 s c e n e m a g a z i n e n o v e m b e r 2 013

Other eclectic accents, such as a silver skull, a pair of studded blue Alexa Winner pumps and (more) leopard-print throw pillows, add spice to her country-inspired charm. In the kitchen, a quirky wall sculpture of halfeaten Valentine truffles by the artist Alexandre Arrechia echoes Richards’s own living-room wall piece: a tableau of Warhol-inspired whipped-cream cans, encased in Plexiglass, that she made for a curator friend’s show. A Jeff Koons dog would feel right at home here. We leave her in the kitchen pondering the subject of window dressings. Rihanna is moving into the penthouse upstairs, she says, and she wants to shield her home from the prying eyes of paparazzi in the Holiday Inn across the street. She laments that ABC Home no longer makes the floor-to-ceiling lace curtain that now partitions off her living space. Asked whether her famous parents ever drop in, she says that her father came to one of her Christmas parties last year. “He just sat on the couch and I kept giving him beers all night,” she laughs. “He was just happy being fed and listening to music.” As we let ourselves out, we notice a balloon bouquet that Richards has picked up for a surprise bash later that night stuffed inside the laundry room. Despite the grown-up décor, she is still—like her father— every bit the party girl she used to be.

And when Salzer, founder of the jewelry line Lulu Frost, wants to tell you a story, you’d be well advised to listen. It might be a story about the mintcondition Grace Jones record that occupies a place of honor on her bookshelves, behind a decorative sunburst objet. “We love Grace Jones. Then there’s the Companion sculpture, by the artist KAWS, recently purchased by Salzer’s live-in boyfriend, dancer Marlon Taylor-Wiles. The piece sits, head in hands, on the edge of a giant ficus tree in the corner of the apartment: “He’s awesome,” Salzer says of the Companion. “Great to tell tales of woe to.” Oh, and the ficus, by the way, is named Green Boy Junior. “Green Boy Senior was tragically killed in a bad-plant-parenting accident,” she adds. That kind of good humor, too, is essential to Salzer’s character: she has the sort of effortless charm that finds her interrupting herself midsentence in order to ask if you mind if she takes her boots off. The eclectic, hip Lulu Frost vibe is reflected in her personal style as well: when we visit, she’s belted a shiny, patterned Kenzo maxi skirt and paired it with an embroidered green and gray J.Crew sweater, her modish short haircut swept to the side.

Imagine a designer’s exquisitely curated, minimally decorated apartment. It’s cool—maybe cold. It’s serious. Reserved. It features only the most sophisticated furnishings. under surveilance with casey neistat TEXT BY JENNIFER WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHED BY PETER MURDOCK
Going inside filmmaker Casey Neistat’s Chinatown studio feels like being admitted into a secret clubhouse. Outside his door signs proclaim “No Social Visits” so adamantly that you might be of a mind to turn away. If you’re brave enough to step inside, you’ll realize that Neistat, for all his bonhomie, isn’t joking about that message. Video cameras monitor everyone who might be trying to enter, as well as those people already in different rooms of the studio. A live video feed outside the door and intercom system is in the works. “Once you open the door, you’re obliged to be nice,” Neistat justifies. “If there’s just a robotic speaker shouting ‘I’m sorry. We’re not taking visitors’ it’s easier to turn people away.” The filmmaker, it seems, has simply too many fans. He blushes and apologizes, saying, “The truth is I’d love nothing more than to show everyone around, I’m proud of this place. But I’m here four days a week, and when I’m here—between e-mails and phone calls and interviews—it leaves very little time for me to edit, and I edit all my own movies. To let friends hang out or let my girlfriends come by or strangers come in for a 15-minute visit—it makes me unable to make movies. I can’t do it.” This stream of hopeful visitors may be an unusual problem, even among the glitterati. After all, people would probably think twice about showing up at Steven Spielberg’s apartment, knocking on the door, and asking if they can come in for a cup of coffee. However, Neistat’s films—and his HBO program, The Neistat Brothers—may invite this practice. “When you see it in the movies 8 2 S C E N E M A G A Z I N E N O V E M B E R 2 013

After all, Neistat rose to fame when one of his videos criticized the iPhone’s lack of battery replacement policy. Neil Cavuto called it a "David and Goliath story” on Fox News, and it transformed Neistat into something of an urban folk hero. But that hasn’t stopped him from getting an iPhone. “I have every phone,” he exclaims. “I probably have 12 phones. Cell phones are by far my favorite toy.” He loves it’s hard not to think this is a fun place to hang out. [But] I don’t hang out here. I don’t

The wellversed interior designers (they began decorating 30 years ago) get their inspiration from the catwalk. “The gap between what goes on in fashion and what goes on in the world of home furnishing has gotten smaller,” explains Barsanti, “The difference between fashion and home is that typically things in your home are there a lot longer.” The team, who also offer clients design services and custom furniture, therefore takes care to create sensible, classic pieces versus ones that are trendy. hbhome.com eliz a k rp oya n

Whether a formal appraisal or a broker evaluation is rendered for a specific property, the goal is the same: to provide professional guidance as to the value of the property under present market circumstances. By definition, an appraisal is the opinion of value by a professional, licensed or certified appraiser. The preparation of an appraisal report involves research into market data and objective facts about the value of real property. The broker’s role, like an appraiser’s, begins with a comparative market analysis to compare a specific property with recent sales or listings of properties that possess similar qualities and characteristics. Both the appraiser and the broker will account for floor level, street location, view, condition, size and special features. The difference is that an expert broker’s evaluation anticipates not only the objective but also the subjective aspects of working directly with buyers and sellers, appreciating their needs, desires, interests and tastes. The evaluation will be informed by that experience in addition to the factual data. A successful professional residential real estate broker brings to the process a feeling for the intangibles of the current market and for the effect they have on value. Evaluating most properties is not an exact science—it is also an art.

“The kids tear up all the furniture in this house, too. I mean, a house is meant for you to live in.”
Known for creating “luxurious, livable spaces” for celebrities and the social elite— naturally, Darren Henault has designed all of his past living spaces. For the last three years, though, he’s practically been living in a museum: the former James Berwind mansion, a home that has since been turned into five separate apartments.
Fortunately, guests needn’t worry about spilling red wine on the plush carpets or period furniture. “I could care less about that. We had a mishap in the house in Millbrook, which is also a rental,” he says of their weekend home, of which he designed every millimeter.

All I did was spit and polish and add some trimmings, throw some furniture around. It’s grounding and calming to live here.” His living room is the “Charles X” room, which was used as the mansion’s library in its heyday. On a nearby side table is a giant pewter dish Henault stole from Monkey Bar. “They use it to bring chocolate mints or something like that to the table at the end of the meal, and I just put it in my bag because I really liked it,” he says. Seemingly out of place is a modestly sized flat screen TV propped up on a painter’s easel in the corner of the room. “Anyone who tries to ignore TV or doesn’t have one is ridiculous. We don’t watch that much TV, but if the girls are watching a movie, I don’t want them to do it downstairs, I want them to watch it with me,” he says. Nearby are some interesting
Initially, Henault was so opposed to living on the Upper East Side that he refused to even visit Michael’s apartment when they first started dating. “I said I would never, ever, ever, ever live uptown. But then we realized that all of the schools we wanted to send the girls to were up here.” Expecting a slow turnaround when they put the Soho condo on the market, Henault

A winding, red-carpeted mahogany staircase leads to a corridor adorned with 20 framed prints of women in colonial period dress. “Oh my gosh, Michael basically just tore them all out of a book and framed them. Don’t they look fancy?" Next comes the girls’ room, which is simple and very clean, two beds, pink and white sheets and walls, a big, pink stuffed dog sprawled out on the floor. “I always said, ‘I hate pink, pink is never going to happen. A picture of a tie-dye teddy bear hanging from a rope is mounted between the girls’ beds. “Oh, that’s suicide bear,” he explains. “One day Michael came home and said, ‘I got this art for the girls' room.’”
The decision to rent seemed like an easy one—for starters, he was tired of putting a bunch of elbow grease into rentals, but most importantly, he’s not sure where the girls will end up next for school.
Could it perhaps be a window-washing bear?
“Also, have you seen real estate prices in New York?” he scoffs.
“Nope, it’s a suicide bear. He’s definitely hanging from a noose.”
Bottom line: how does he really feel about living in an apartment he hasn’t

new york real estate market update text by Michael Ewing Market Status 2013 has been a exciting year for the real estate market in Mahattan. It’s been full of surprises, especially as we’ve seen rising prices and sustained growth entering the fall, a time when the market tends to soften and slow down. The luxury market started the year off with apartments averaging $3.8 million per unit and $2,022 per square-foot, according to TOWN’s The Aggregate report. Those

averages climbed to about $4,150,000 and upward of $2,213 per square-foot at prices with one-bedrooms averaging low in the $800,000 range, two-bedrooms at $1,750,000, and three-bedrooms at nearly $3.6 million. The rental market has also seen an increase in prices. According to TOWN’s Rental in the mid $3,000s and reaching $4,400 in Soho and Tribeca. Two-bedrooms are reaching high $5,000s through mid $6,000s, and three-bedrooms are hammering
“I still think the Upper East Side has some of the best value when it comes to sales and Murray Hill still has some great rental pricing,” says Deidre De Risi of CORE. “I also think that even though the East Village and Alphabet City are quickly gentrifying, there is still good value there too for both sales and rentals.” “Value is a relative term,” cautions Sarah Orlinsky-Maitland, a licensed associate real estate broker at NYCRS. “Of course, if you are looking for space for a steal, the

PAULA DEL NUNZIO TOWNHOUSE RECORD Brown Harris Stevens Townhouse Broker of the Year in 2012 and 2008, Paula Del Nunzio has specialized in townhouses, penthouses and townhouse equivalent spaces for more than 20 years. Since just 2006, she has closed over $962 million in only 60 townhouse sales, and achieved an average of 94 percent of the last asking price. Del Nunzio’s encyclopedic knowledge of the townhouse market is a tremendous benefit to both buyers and sellers. Among her most significant townhouse sales were The Harkness Mansion, a 50-foot wide building off Fifth Avenue and 75th Street sold for $53 million, the highest price ever paid for a private residence in New York; The Milbank Mansion, a 48-foot wide building off Fifth Avenue, sold for $49 million; and the Duke-Semans Mansion, a 27-foot wide building on Fifth Avenue, which she sold for $40 million and again, later, for $44 million. Paula was also the exclusive seller of The Stanford White Mansion at 973 Fifth Avenue, a 25-foot wide townhouse, which sold for $42 million; and The John Duncan Mansion at 8 East 62nd Street, sold for $35 million. No other New York broker surpasses Paula’s townhouse track record. She holds the top three record sales of 25-foot wide townhouses—973 Fifth Avenue at $42 million, 18 East 80th Street at $37.5 million, and 8 East 62nd Street at $35 million. She has also represented the seller in seven of the eight highest residential townhouse sales in the history of New York, and closed 22 townhouses measuring 25-feet or wider. In June, she set the record for the highest price per square-foot ever paid for a townhouse, representing the seller in the sale of 21 Beekman Place for $34.35 million or $4,754 per square-foot. Del Nunzio owes her success in real estate in part to her varied background. Her 14-year career in advertising provided her with the experience to create proven, successful marketing campaigns for high-end properties. She was the Executive Producer at Ogilvy & Mather Advertising for the Mattel, Honda, Max Factor, Gallo and Proctor & Gamble accounts. In addition, she wrote and produced teasers and trailers for 21 Columbia Pictures feature films.

investing with ted murphy text by Hel aina Hovitz Ted Murphy, 37, wears a lot of hats. He is founder and CEO of IZEA, TD Rags, The BUZZ Line, MindComet and Odebo; co-founder and VP of creative services at MindComet; and founder/ partner of Dogfish and Hardhat. It’s a lot to handle, and Murphy lavishes time on each project. Right now, however, his main focus is IZEA, which connects brands with creators who blog, tweet, pin, and post on their behalf. The system works for everyone involved—brands receive influential consumer content, and creators are compensated for their participation. The company has completed more than 3.3 million sponsorships with creators ranging from Kim Kardashian to P. Diddy. Murphy has raised over $24 million in capital to date, including investments from billionaires John Pappajohn and Dr. Phil Frost, and he invests it broadly. Here’s a look at what he does with all his dough. Who is that with you in the photo? That is one of my bearhawks. I raise them on my farm and teach them

Voyeur — Ask Annelise
text by annelise peterson illustration by Foivi Spyridonos
Dear Annelise, Is it totally wrong to give your number to a man you know you are not interested in? Sometimes I find ignoring a text message or declining a friendship request easier than telling a person that I am not interested. What is a polite way to decline giving your number without using the tired—and also untrue—"I have a boyfriend" line? Dear Miss Molly, Your sensitivity to others must account for why you are a girl in demand. Although I applaud your Polite Park Avenue Princess attitude, I suggest you direct your focus away from what other people might think of you—especially those you have no interest in pursuing a relationship with. It is absolutely fine to ignore a friendship request or a text from a relative stranger. If you consider the pur(suitor), a friend, then pay him the respect of a polite decline such as, “Thank you. I am not available for dinner, but it was great seeing you the other night.” In short, accept (if you’re interested), acknowledge (if you want to be friends) or move-on (if you have no interest in them at all). You’re well on your way from Single Miss to Wedding Bell Blissed.
I am a woman of a certain age. That age is 44. I am in love with everything Alexander Wang designs, especially his perforated logo leather pieces from his last show. But am I too old to wear Wang? My mother, who is 70, wants me in twin sets and flats, but that just isn't my style. Can I Wang-Fun tonight? Or will I be mutton dressed as lamb? Dear Forever 21, I applaud your loyalty to one designer. There are so many choices these days that finding a stylish stride can be difficult in all the fashion traffic. That being said, I do think there is something to be said for aging gracefully. Leggo of your Logo! Rather than head-to-toe perforated leather, try adding some Wang Whimsy to your Carolina Cardigan. Good Luck—and remember: You can always be Forever 21 at heart and modify that NET-A-PORTER shopping cart. True style icons MUST mix—and in this case, Mother knows best. 14 2 s c e n e m a g a z i n e n o v e m b e r 2 013
