Photographer Ben Cope’s striking images have appeared in Nylon, Flaunt, Wallpaper and Vogue Australia, to name a few. He shot David Lynch for SCENE’s July issue and photographed Moby at his house in Hollywood for this month’s cover story. He recalls first meeting Moby. “You might want to go around to the other door, there is a baby rattlesnake next to your foot.” Moby told Cope as he answered the door. “The baby rattler became the topic of conversation for the better part of my time at his house.” Cope remembers. “He devised plans and searched for items to help him remove the baby without harm to himself or the snake.”

For this issue, New York City-based photographer Peter Murdock captured the apartments of Alexandra Richards, Lisa Salzer, John and Christine Gachot and the studio of filmmaker Casey Neistat. “It’s endlessly inspiring to discover and capture homes designed around personal style,” Murdock says. He’s also photographed Betsey Johnson’s Upper East Side home and Nur Khan’s Chinatown loft for SCENE’s @home section. When he’s not behind the camera, Murdock can be found hunting down new locations around the world.

Los Angeles based creative consultant Mark Jacobs has worked with the Gap, Target, Halle Berry and Santigold. As an editor and writer, he has contributed to V, Interview, The New York Times Magazine and GQ Style. Jacobs interviewed Moby at home for this issue. “I asked him about the house's sound system,” Jacobs says. “He told me that he listens to music on a modest iPod dock because that’s how most people will hear his music—not on grand superstar speakers.” 12 s c e n e m a g a z i n e n o v e m b e r 2 013

the interior design issue I was raised to know and care about interior design. My mother, Senga Mortimer, who has been an editor at House & Garden, Elle Decor and House Beautiful, has impeccable taste. The apartment I grew up in was classic, quirky and chic. It never felt stuffy—my scuffed-up skateboard seemed to belong on the floor of our library, which was stocked with vintage garden books and massive bronze sculptures. When I renovated and decorated my first real apartment in Tribeca, my mother schooled me in things like not choosing the “wrong green” and how to hide unsightly necessities like TV sets. I recently moved to a loft in Williamsburg and my mother’s influence is everywhere, even if our taste is different—I collect pop art; Mom bids on watercolors of unusual flowers. I definitely have the interiordesign itch. I am forever re-hanging art and when I travel, I rearrange hotel rooms and pack fabric from India to cover up an ugly chair or a hideous painting. My apartment says a lot about me—anal-retentive, obsessive shopaholic, weird sense of humor. For our Interior Design issue we visit many fascinating people at home, discovering much about who they are and how they live. Photographer Ben Cope and writer Mark Jacobs hung out with Moby in Los Angeles. The rooms of the prolific musician’s turreted house are well edited, modern and eclectic, much like his stellar new album Innocents. In New York, we made house calls with model and DJ Alexandra Richards, Lulu Frost designer Lisa Salzer, filmmaker Casey Neistat (get ready for a major dose of visual OCD), interior decorator Darren Henault and the Gachots, a design couple whose home is part art gallery, part toy store. Photographer Peter Murdock expertly captures each subject and their private space—illuminating the personality and design DNA of each home. After finishing our Interior Design issue, I raced home and started moving chairs and tables and

I’ve been wearing them since I was 13. I don’t think I’ll ever stop. I never leave home without: The Rolex my hubby Simon Doonan gave me for our anniversary a few years back. And hand sanitizer. It’s a dirty world. Right now I am coveting: A new pair of Tricker’s wingtips from Grahame Fowler’s sublime West Village shop. They’re solid, they’re singular, and if you resole them they’ll last longer than you will. Fragrance: Un-fragranced is my preference. knoll’s antenna is up TEXT BY ELIZA KRPOYAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY DOROTHY HONG Sigi Moeslinger and Masamichi Udagawa are not your ordinary furniture designers. They don’t design pieces that you’ll find knockoffs of at Ikea. However, If you have ever purchased a metro card from a NY transit vending machine then you’ve already seen their work—they designed all of those kiosks. Now they’re working for Knoll. Udagawa explains that Knoll approached them because they were looking for someone who could create office furniture from a different perspective. “They didn’t want a collection that would be a continuation of what’s been done,” he explains. Their first project for Knoll was to design an office system for commercial spaces. What they realized is that “these pieces were not something we would ever have in a home,” Udagawa says of conventional office furniture. The duo looked at their vintage Knoll dining room and wondered, “Why can’t office furniture be like this? Elegant, pure, with a feeling of lightness? Something we would want for ourselves as well.” “There is a social component to coming into work,” says Moeslinger. “People can work from home, but why were they still choosing to come into the office. The answer is “for face to face encounters.” What the couple would need to do is create an office environment that would make people want to be in the office instead of working from home. Their designs—which are centered on how people behave—take into account the fact that the rise of the Internet means there’s less need to store paper. Since people can take their laptop from one desk to another, the workspaces should be flexible, and with all of the moving around in the office, the desks should be able to support various job functions. The final product was the Antenna Workspaces—desks with sleek sturdy legs (inspired by the highway) and storage space not necessarily for papers, but for peoples’ personal belongings, “like a helmet,” explains Udagawa. The ingenious duo has also designed a LED desk light—inspired by spiral wire—for both at home and an office environment. They also have designed a chair with a flip table fit for an iPad or laptop and have Toboggan seating in the works. For the first time, their pieces can be purchased at Knoll’s retail store, which opened in May and their e-commerce shop.

concert pianist jorge viladoms is not just a gorgeous face text by eliza krpoyan Though, his striking good looks and grayishblue eyes may make you wonder, there is more to concert pianist Jorge Viladoms that pleasingly meets the eye. For one thing, he speaks five languages fluently—Spanish, German, French, Italian and English. “All of my music vocabulary is in French, so I speak better French than Spanish,” he says. Since 2011 he has been teaching master’s classes at Lausanne Conservatory for Music in Switzerland, where he lives. “Music is about communication,” he explains. “Music in a way doesn’t exist. It comes and goes. It is not like a painting in a museum. You have to share it. So I try to share it by teaching it, through my concerts, and in a social way.” And Last year, Viladoms started Crescendo con la Musica Foundation. The organization provides children living in poverty in Mexico access to instruments and art education. “It is so great for their self-esteem,” he says. The foundation is also helping the musicians who are teaching the kids. “They are all Mexican and they will have a chance to take master Viladoms. With every concert he performs, he raises funds for the foundation and spreads the word for people to donate instruments. He has already collected 100 instruments that will be sent to the school Centro Educativo la Barranca in Mexico where classical music study is now a required course.

We are huge fans of Jamaica (we even spent our honeymoon there) so we decided on Jake’s Treasure Beach Hotel in St. Elizabeth. We had our own villa right on the beach and the whole trip was beyond beautiful.

philip gorivvan As an interior designer, I am always looking for inspiration for my projects, as well as for the textiles and products I design. Travel is a great channel for creativity, and it helps that my family and I all love the opportunity to go to new places. This past summer, we had an opportunity to move to London, one of our favorite cities, and obviously a major world design center. The experience of actually living in London has been quite special; there is so much to discover on a daily basis, and its such a livable city. The other added advantage is that London is a wonderful spring board for travel all throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Recently we all went to Marrakech. Morocco is a very special place for many reasons, especially since my mother was born there, and grew up in Casablanca. There is nothing contrived about Morocco; it’s truly an authentic experience, from gorgeous desert sunsets and hearing the calls to prayer to the sights, sounds and smells of the souk. For me, its an incredible visual experience and I am particularly inspired by the myriad of vibrant colors, the architecture and the dedication to hand crafted products. This year, we stayed in a secluded riad in the Palmerie, Jnane Tamsna, which only added to the authenticity of our experience.

georgina chapman and keren craig We have always had a vision for Marchesa to be a full lifestyle brand and so the next natural step for us was to design a contemporary collection. When working on this collection we thought about unique silhouettes, prints, embellishment and fit so we could offer something new within the contemporary market. We wanted the collection to have a global attitude—for the woman who is comfortable navigating the world even if she is staying at home. Additionally, we have been able to translate our intricate Marchesa couture aesthetic into pieces with depth and character, but at a more accessible price point, which we are very excited about. The specific inspiration for the brand is a reflection of the many travels that we have experienced throughout our lives. We have been so lucky to have had the chance to travel to so many wonderful and inspiring places from Peru to India.

A Jeff Koons dog would feel right at home here. We leave her in the kitchen pondering the subject of window dressings. Rihanna is moving into the penthouse upstairs, she says, and she wants to shield her home from the prying eyes of paparazzi in the Holiday Inn across the street. She laments that ABC Home no longer makes the floor-to-ceiling lace curtain that now partitions off her living space. Asked whether her famous parents ever drop in, she says that her father came to one of her Christmas parties last year. “He just sat on the couch and I kept giving him beers all night,” she laughs. “He was just happy being fed and listening to music.” As we let ourselves out, we notice a balloon bouquet that Richards has picked up for a surprise bash later that night stuffed inside the laundry room. Despite the grown-up décor, she is still—like her father— every bit the party girl she used to be.

West 14th Street apartment, a pair of artist’s models swoop gracefully in midair as if caught in a pas-de-deux freeze frame, with three plump, cheerful little cacti serving as spectators. Then there’s the Companion sculpture, by the artist KAWS, recently purchased by Salzer’s live-in boyfriend, dancer Marlon Taylor-Wiles. The piece sits, head in hands, on the edge of a giant ficus tree in the corner of the apartment: “He’s awesome,” Salzer says of the Companion. “Great to tell tales of woe to.” Oh, and the ficus, by the way, is named Green Boy Junior. “Green Boy Senior was tragically killed in a bad-plant-parenting accident,” she adds. That kind of good humor, too, is essential to Salzer’s character: she has the sort of effortless charm that finds her interrupting herself midsentence in order to ask if you mind if she takes her boots off. The eclectic, hip Lulu Frost vibe is reflected in her personal style as well: when we visit, she’s belted a shiny, patterned Kenzo maxi skirt and paired it with an embroidered green and gray J.Crew sweater, her modish short haircut swept to the side.

Imagine a designer’s exquisitely curated, minimally decorated apartment. It’s cool—maybe cold. It’s serious. Reserved. It features only the most sophisticated furnishings. You certainly won’t see any trace of children, who are doubtless kept in one small room and, if they are ever allowed out, are sternly instructed not to touch anything. Going inside filmmaker Casey Neistat’s Chinatown studio feels like being admitted into a secret clubhouse. Outside his door signs proclaim “No Social Visits” so adamantly that you might be of a mind to turn away. If you’re brave enough to step inside, you’ll realize that Neistat, for all his bonhomie, isn’t joking about that message. Video cameras monitor everyone who might be trying to enter, as well as those people already in different rooms of the studio. A live video feed outside the door and intercom system is in the works. “Once you open the door, you’re obliged to be nice,” Neistat justifies. “If there’s just a robotic speaker shouting ‘I’m sorry. We’re not taking visitors’ it’s easier to turn people away.” The filmmaker, it seems, has simply too many fans. He blushes and apologizes, saying, “The truth is I’d love nothing more than to show everyone around, I’m proud of this place. But I’m here four days a week, and when I’m here—between e-mails and phone calls and interviews—it leaves very little time for me to edit, and I edit all my own movies. To let friends hang out or let my girlfriends come by or strangers come in for a 15-minute visit—it makes me unable to make movies. I can’t do it.” This stream of hopeful visitors may be an unusual problem, even among the glitterati. After all, people would probably think twice about showing up at Steven Spielberg’s apartment, knocking on the door, and asking if they can come in for a cup of coffee. Known for creating “luxurious, livable spaces” for celebrities and the social elite— naturally, Darren Henault has designed all of his past living spaces. For the last three years, though, he’s practically been living in a museum: the former James Berwind mansion, a home that has since been turned into five separate apartments.

Fortunately, guests needn’t worry about spilling red wine on the plush carpets or period furniture. “I could care less about that. We had a mishap in the house in Millbrook, which is also a rental,” he says of their weekend home, of which he designed every millimeter.

Sometimes I find ignoring a text message or declining a friendship request easier than telling a person that I am not interested. What is a polite way to decline giving your number without using the tired—and also untrue—"I have a boyfriend" line? Dear Miss Molly, Your sensitivity to others must account for why you are a girl in demand. Although I applaud your Polite Park Avenue Princess attitude, I suggest you direct your focus away from what other people might think of you—especially those you have no interest in pursuing a relationship with. It is absolutely fine to ignore a friendship request or a text from a relative stranger. If you consider the pur(suitor), a friend, then pay him the respect of a polite decline such as, “Thank you. I am not available for dinner, but it was great seeing you the other night.” In short, accept (if you’re interested), acknowledge (if you want to be friends) or move-on (if you have no interest in them at all). You’re well on your way from Single Miss to Wedding Bell Blissed.
