A year ago, Brooklyn girl Greta Gerwig graced the cover of our first “New Hollywood” issue. This time, we photographed actor Jonathan Groff, who lives in Chelsea when not shooting his HBO series Looking in San Francisco. An undeniably talented actor, what
A drawing by SCENE columnist Donald Robertson depicting the time my “gun briefcase” was not that popular with the TSA at JFK.
makes Groff truly new is the fact that he has been openly gay since his career onscreen took off. Sure, it’s great when a movie star comes out of the closet (even if sometimes the public’s reaction is “well… about time”), but to live honestly and claim your sexuality is, unfortunately, still a big, brave move. And Groff is thriving in both edgy, indie projects (C.O.G.) and mainstream television and movies—from his role on Glee to providing the voice of Kristoff in Disney’s animated blockbuster Frozen. But it’s the actor’s role on Looking that has made me a fan. The HBO show, which got renewed for a second season despite its rocky start, depicts gay life in the most honest way I have ever seen on television or film. Groff and his costars aren’t over-the-top drag queens, over-sexed muscle heads or sassy sidekicks. They are ordinary gay men “looking” for love and struggling with life—just like straight people. In its simplicity, Looking is groundbreaking. This month, we also profile 15 first-timers—including Charlie McDowell, Desiree Akhavan and Lou Howe— whose talent is making them Hollywood’s next hot thing. These fascinating directors, screenwriters, actors, composers, casting directors, production and costume designers will define what we watch on the big and small screen for years to come. peter davis editor in chief

DRESSING FOR BILL BILL CUNNINGHAM’S “FACADES” AT THE NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM
Between 1968 and 1976, NYC man-about-town Bill Cunningham photographed models dressed in vintage period clothing in the city's streets, parks and train stations. He later donated many of the resulting silver gelatin prints to the New-York Historical Society, 88 of which appear in its new exhibition, “Facades.” Through June 15. nyhistory.org

beauty and the blog third generation editor Clémence von Mueffling launches online magazine Text by elizabeth landers photography by ben kulo
“I always say I was born in a jar,” exclaims Cleménce von Mueffling with a twinkling laugh. The Frenchwomanturned-United States citizen (a fact she proudly reveals) comes from a long lineage of beauty editors. Her grandmother and mother were both veterans at French Vogue, hence her prenatal addiction to beauty products. Now von Mueffling is focused on a more holistic approach to her regimen and is generously sharing her decades of knowledge in her new e-zine Beauty and Well Being. The online publication launched in early May, introducing a mélange of runway makeup trends, fast and tasty recipes and cultural tips. “When I had children, a good friend gave me a book on health, nutrition, the impact of industrial farming and chemicals…it completely opened my eyes,” she says, explaining the genesis of her project. Talking to the jewelry designer Aurélie Bidermann brings to mind the Pharrell Williams song “Happy.” The Parisian jeweler, whose spring and summer collections include gems in yellow, coral and turquoise hues—“happy” colors as she describes them—recently opened her eponymous boutique at the corner of Lafayette and Prince Streets. “I love the location,” she says. “Lafayette reflects the New York ambience. It has a cool vibe and the people who I want to touch live downtown.” Bidermann—who splits her time between Paris and New York City (she lives on the Upper East Side about 10 days out of every month)—already has a following uptown, with her pieces available at Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue. Another reason she chose the downtown location? “It’s next to my second office, Sant Ambroeus,” she jokes in her French accent. As the designer’s first stateside store, the boutique will include Manhattan exclusives like a “Big Apple” charm. “The inspiration for the New York store is the same DNA as Paris but with an American laid-back vibe. My brand is very sunny, warm and happy, so I chose [to reflect] California in the ’60s and ’70s,” she explains. The shop will also house signature pieces like lace cuffs, created by dipping antique lace found in flea markets in gold (she uses the same process with other natureinspired pieces, including real tarantulas, beetles, ginkgo leaves and butterflies). When visiting the store, expect to spot celebrities Emma Watson, Zoe Saldana, Mary-Kate Olsen and Beyoncé—all fans of the brand. Ooh là là. aureliebidermann.com

barchetta
new chelsea eatery barchetta offers a different taste of italy text by Laura C. Mallonee
Meatballs drowning in tomato sauce. Chicken cutlet sizzling beneath gobs of oozing cheese. Sound good? Of course it does. But though it’s the soul of New York comfort food, it’s the exact thing you won’t find at Barchetta, chef Dave Pasternack’s and restaurateur John Meadow’s (of LDV Hospitality) latest contribution to Italian fare in Manhattan. Situated on 23rd Street near 10th Avenue, Barchetta instead takes its cue from the Italian phrase fatto da sole, its literal translation being “made by the sun.” That means bright tomatoes, citrus-infused olive oils and plenty of fresh seafood or crudo—raw fish dressed with lemon or lime (the Mediterranean’s answer to sashimi). Given that barchetta means “little boat,” Chef Pasternack (of Esca fame) buys his meat from local fishermen to get the freshest product possible. To start out, have a flight of crudo (you can choose six different fish), and follow it with the polipo alla galicia—delectably charred octopus with smoked peppers, potatoes and red onion. For primi, there’s the fettuccine with fresh lobster, English peas and sorrel—you’ll never again feel satisfied by the traditional, alfredo version. Next, the orata americana, a whole grilled porgy garnished with rosemary and capers. While this doesn’t leave much room for dessert, order it anyway. The rhubarb tart will send you to heaven in one bite. The restaurant’s food speaks for itself, but the ambience is also tasteful. Designer Chris Sheffield sourced the wooden tabletops from an 1840s Pennsylvania farm and bought the seating from an Amsterdam elementary school, melding urban rustic with midcentury modern decor. And though it has its maritime moments, it also pays homage to Chelsea’s artistic community with wall works by Alexandra Posen (Zac’s sister) and Eddie Milstein, among others. The overall effect is that Barchetta, now only a few months old, already feels like a neighborhood staple.

1. Tiramisu from East 12th Osteria I love this place and no one even knows about it yet. Typically tiramisu is made in a pan, like lasagne, and dished out in the same way. Here, each one is made individually, and instead of using traditional ladyfingers, they bake a ladyfinger “patty” and stick it between two giant clouds of mascarpone. Ben & Lou Howe
PRODUCER AND writer/DIRECTOR
text by Michael Hafford photography by Ryan Carville AND BEN COPE
Gabriel, the story of a mentally troubled youth played by Rory Culkin, has something going for it not a lot of movies do. It was directed and produced by the Howe brothers, Ben and Lou, based loosely on a friend they both remember from childhood. Culkin gives a powerful, raw turn as the film’s titular character, wowing audiences at the Tribeca Film Festival this April. And though the story is entirely fictional, the stakes of telling it were very real. “Knowing this person directly, but also having watched the whole process that he’s going through, and his family’s going through, definitely grounded the project in a personal place for both of us,” Lou says. “Very early on I wanted to fictionalize it, and it became its own thing.” Ultimately, Gabriel is a dark movie about fear, acceptance and the struggle to fit in. If it does as well as its early returns indicate, the brothers could have a brooding indie darling on their hands. But none of that would be possible without a relationship that goes back to birth. The Howe brothers grew up together on New York’s Upper East Side and the West Village, raised on a steady diet of ’80s comedies and a mother with a penchant for impromptu

double features. Though theirs was not a life entirely of the cinema—their father worked in finance and is an amateur photographer, their mother was a photographer’s agent and later a rape crisis counselor—it was a realization of an early dream for Lou to become a creative professional. “I always wanted to grow up to be a writer in general, and then I fell in love with movies,” Lou explains. “Mike Leigh’s Naked was a big touchstone for us,” Ben adds. “American movies from the ’70s like The Gambler, a James Caan movie. These suspenseful character studies became a model for me and Lou.” The brothers have an easy rapport, evident when they talk about making Lou’s directorial debut. 56

“If we grew up outside of New York, we would be very different filmmakers.”
“Once you got into the making of the movie … It was just easy and fun,” Ben says. “That also allowed me to be less diplomatic with Lou than I would be with a different director.” But Ben and Lou followed quite different paths to their reunion in the credits at Tribeca. Ben cut his teeth as an executive assistant for Scott Rudin, working on such films as School of Rock, The Stepford Wives and The Manchurian Candidate. After Lou’s unsuccessful attempt to follow the same path, he went to study at the American Film Institute, a school that has a reputation for churning out top-quality film professionals in all branches of the industry. Have the brothers ever experienced sibling rivalry? “We have complementary jobs, so I don’t feel competitive towards Lou in terms of filmmaking,” Ben says. “I just want the best for him.” “I was a horrible assistant producer for a little while before film school,” Lou recalls. “I tried writing a little bit with Lou and I think it’s the hardest thing in the world,” Ben adds. “We don’t have actual competitiveness between us, but we still have our leftover sibling dynamic. Ben’s the older brother and we can definitely carry that through our working relationship.” “Not having a filter can help you problem solve—” “—make quicker decisions—” “—you cut out a layer of bullshit. But that can also be problematic if you aren’t realizing how things are coming across.” Although the brothers live on separate coasts—Ben in New York City and Lou in Los Angeles—both regard their home city as the cinema capital of America. Even though L.A. is more steeped in the film business, one of the major things Lou misses about New York is going to the movies. “People don’t really go to movies in L.A. the same way that they do in New York,” he complains. “If we grew up outside of New lou howe

Jack Bryan writer and director text by Kirsten O’Regan photography by ben kulo
“My first memory is of being in a movie theater,” says Jack Bryan, the charming writer and director of the new thriller The Living. “It was a very traumatic experience, and I was kinda stuck after that.” The movie was The Bear, an emotionally complex tale of abandonment, danger and redemption, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. “I was a very cosmopolitan 4-year-old,” Bryan observes wryly. Not cosmopolitan enough, as it turned out. Watching the mother bear get crushed by a falling rock sent little Jack over the edge. “They had to pull me out,” recalls the native New Yorker. “I was apparently inconsolable.” This early trauma did nothing to deter him from pursuing a career in film—far from it. By 16, Bryan had written his first screenplay and was dreaming of the big time, inspired by the “boy wonder” of cinema. “I was thinking, ‘I’ve got nine years to be Orson Welles—I can do that!’” At 18, he filmed his first feature, but abandoned it after editing a couple scenes. In college, he worked as a production assistant and wrote several screenplays that were later optioned. By 2009, he’d completed a documentary about the legendarily rowdy after-hours New York bar Siberia and was dabbling in journalism and film production. Three years later, he cofounded the production company Shooting Films. It’s unsurprising, then, that he’s now promoting his first real feature film: a tautly plotted thriller, peopled by characters whose actions and choices are morally ambiguous and emotionally fraught. The film pivots around an incidence of drunken domestic violence and the fallout that ensues. In presenting the wife beater as an ostensibly nice, if flawed, human being, and the wife’s choice to stay or go as an agonizing decision, Bryan adds shades of gray to a situation that might otherwise be simplified. “I wanted to make a film that felt more based in the real world,” he says, “and to see the end result of that impotent revenge fantasy played out.” Bryan promises that his follow-up feature (Private Kingdom, slated to shoot in early 2015) will be “more photo by Neil Rasmus/BFAnyc.com
commercial and probably cooler—a more upbeat thing.” But he’s not too busy to sit back and enjoy the response to The Living, which recently screened at Tribeca Film Festival. “You know, it’s a dark little thriller—kind of like a rustic noir, but people seem to really be enjoying it,” he says, happily. “When you’re in the audience of a movie you’ve made, and you’re watching people screaming, that’s a lot of fun,” he admits. “That’s candy.” 66

Kathryn Neale costume designer
text by Kirsten O’Regan
Last week Kathryn Neale was in Senegal. Next week she’ll be in Tokyo. The week after that? Rio de Janeiro. Neale seems to be everywhere, and though you may not know her name, chances are you’ve seen her work. The effortlessly elegant fashion stylist and Vogue contributing editor has a portfolio to envy, and it’s expanding now, with her work as costume designer on upcoming indie flick The Living—her first foray into feature film. “What I like about my job is I get to do many things, and wear many hats,” says Neale, in the clipped uptilting accent of her native New Zealand. She’s a friend of The Living director Jack Bryan, and on hearing about the project, she immediately pushed to design the costumes. “What’s interesting working in film is that you’re given this opportunity to really tell one story as opposed to just creating iconic images,” she says. “For me it’s very exciting.” Though Neale wasn’t born into the fashion universe, she entered it quickly. She grew up in Wellington, and as a teenager was scouted by Ford Models. For the next few years she worked in Tokyo, Paris and Munich before settling in New York. “I always found it very stifling,” she recalls of her modeling years. “In the types of jobs I was doing, my opinion wasn’t particularly welcomed.” At 20, she quit to study at FIT before starting a magazine with some friends. “It was really satisfying to come up with the ideas and the creative, and to be involved in the production from the beginning, rather than just turning up and playing the role that’s assigned to you.” Since then, Neale has been working steadily as a freelance fashion editor and stylist, creating looks for Lupita Nyong’o, Kate Upton and Diane Keaton in the pages of magazines like Vogue and Lucky. After styling countless shoots, shows and commercials, The Living presented her with a fresh challenge to relish. “I think it’s great to do things when you really don’t know what you’re doing, and you’re terrified,” she says. “And then you get through the first day and suddenly you know what you’re doing and everything’s a little bit easier.” photo by Neil Rasmus/BFAnyc.com
She’s already bubbling with plans for a follow-up— an L.A. Kickstarter film project to be shot in Las Vegas. But her aspirations reach further than that. “My dream is to have a taco truck in New Zealand,” she says, mischievously. “I’d like to park a taco truck at the beach every day. I think that’d be a really fun job and I think I’d be real good at it. But I’m still working on my recipes.” 67

ON REAL ESTATE Every client and customer relationship with a residential real estate agent should be based on trust and privacy. The agent’s commitment to confidentiality and discretion must be absolute. As guardians of their clients’ interests, agents should consider their responsibilities and ethical standards to be the equivalent of those of a private banker. Advances in technology, however, make this aspect of their job difficult in new ways. Is it possible to strike a balance between the individual’s desire for privacy and the public’s right to know? In New York City and elsewhere, residential sales of cooperatives, condominiums and townhouses are a matter of public record, and many websites popularly provide basic information about a transaction, including buyer, seller, address and price, within days of a closing. An experienced professional agent will shepherd buyers and sellers through the complex sales process so that transactions proceed as discreetly as possible. But in an age of transparency, the larger questions of oversharing, and of technologies that must be properly governed in the public’s best interest, need to continue to receive close attention. Dearest Casual Chris, Congratulations on the opportunity in front of you to update your résumé and your workplace wardrobe. I find that a buttonedup ensemble inspires better on-the-job performance, so use this change in attire as motivation to get off to a fabulously fresh start. Put your best foot forward in a pair of stylish yet understated oxfords from Mr. Hare. They will look great with a suit yet can also be dressed down for weekend wearing. Switch out the oxford laces for Car Shoe, an updated alternative to Tod’s preppy penny loafer. Todd Snyder tailored chinos will keep you comfortable in cotton without losing your professional edge and a pair of trousers by Acne Studios are essential to any contemporary wardrobe repertoire. When it comes to polos and dress shirts, Michael Bastian and Orlebar Brown offer au courant
I am dreaming of going on an exotic getaway this summer, but my passport is expired. Do you have any recommendations for where to go that’s also not a long flight from the city? Dear Citizen Casey, There are some great weekend getaways, providing an escape from the process of renewing a passport. Jump on a three-hour flight to Knoxville, Tenn., and from there you will discover one of my favorite all-inclusive destinations, Blackberry Farm. Located in the foothills of the great Smoky Mountains, this one-of-a-kind resort offers outback activities such as fly-fishing, horseback riding and shooting, as well as a wellness spa for those who prefer a more relaxing woodland retreat. Moreover, the farm-to-table cuisine will delight even the most discriminating New York City palette. If beachside retreat is more your wavelength, Sea Island, Ga. is another great option for a long weekend runaway. Situated 70 miles from the Jacksonville, Fla. airport, The Cloister offers five-star service and southern hospitality on the beach.
I’m thinking of hosting a 4th of July party. The catch: it won’t be in the Hamptons, but in my Upper East Side apartment. any party planning recommendations?

Dear Festive Felix, You need not be in the Hamptons to be a great host! I applaud your pursuit to throw a great 4th of July bash within the five boroughs. My best advice is to be unique. Go beyond red, white and blue balloons and make it your own. Create a unique theme such as Hamptons 4th of July on the Upper East Side. Guests will partake in the planning with costumes and their own interpretations from prior experiences out east. Most importantly, make sure you have plenty of bite-size morsels, beverages and music that will keep the energy enthusiastic. And don’t forget to schedule someone to help you clean! You will curse yourself when you wake up the

options that reflect a relaxed professionalism. And don’t forget to accessorize with a great classic cardholder from Bottega Veneta. The devil is in the details and first impressions count as much as a handshake. Good luck! 110 scene magazine

I’ve accepted a new job at an upscale company and the dress code is different than what I am normally used to, which is typically a T-shirt and jeans. What are some good basics around which I can build a stylish and comfortable work outfit?

SCENE took over 1080 Amsterdam by Stonehenge for a good old-fashioned speakeasy. It was a fitting affair for the launch of Stonehenge Partners and SL Green’s newest residential tower, an Art Deco masterpiece re-envisioned for contemporary luxury living. The scene was set with lively music, sparkling cocktails and feather boas aflight, as guests toured the apartments and savored the spectacular views of Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
