The editor in chief of the stylish NYO Section at The New York Observer and also SCENE’s deputy editor, Wright interviewed Malin Akerman for this month’s cover story. “I was surprised to find Malin so down to earth and friendly,” Wright says. “And we're both Canadians!” The former editor in chief of TheGloss. com, Wright’s work has been featured in Glamour, Salon.com, Time Out New York, Popular Mechanics and Maxim. She also interviewed nightlife guru Nur Khan at home and wrote about The Writing Room, which took over the old Elaine’s space. Wright grew up in Chicago, but now calls New York home. “There's not another city in the world where you can wander into a dive bar and find a lychee martini on the menu.”

Weiss, the new social editor of SCENE, debuts his regular nightlife column “The FÊTEration” this month with a glamorous red-eye report on every party, after-party and after-after-party Fashion Week had on the calendar. “I loved hanging out with Pharrell,” Weiss says. “He’s down to earth and has the same birthday as me.” Weiss also interviews the guys behind luxury accessories brand M. de Phocas and Arlene Harrison, the most fierce gatekeeper in the city, as she holds the keys to the gilded gates of Gramercy Park.

Growing up in Manhattan, it’s a given that I love the nightlife. I started hitting clubs way before I was of legal age. (My mother was O.K. with me going to discos at 16—at least she knew where I was.) I still get a teenage rush when I walk into a fabulous new hot spot filled with New York’s most stylish PYTs. For our Nightlife Issue, we sent reporters all over the city to scout the latest lounges, chic restaurants and hipster hotels. Have you been to Bar Naná, where Prabal Gurung held his Fashion Week after-party? Or dined on the fancy food at Monarch? And you must hang out at hotelier Sean Macpherson’s Marlton, which will surely make once-trendy Eighth Street cool again. I then make a quick stop at Harlow for Us Weekly’s “Most Stylish New Yorkers” party, where I again cross paths with the Jonas Brothers, along with Brooke Shields, rapper Eve and a seemingly always beaming Christie Brinkley. Tiffany’s Atlas collection launch is next, where guests like Karen Elson and blogger heavyweights Aimee Song and Chiara Ferragni celebrated on the store’s main floor. I then head downtown for the last few minutes of the Novak Djokovic Foundation’s predinner cocktails, where Naomi Campbell debuts a new bobbed look, and guests Goldie Hawn, Jesse Metcalfe, Ricky Gervais, Ryan Lochte and Anna Wintour help raise $2.5 million for the underprivileged children in Djokovic’s native Serbia. Three fetes still remain, the first of which brings out the unlikely duo of Carmelo Anthony and Jeff Koons, who are together to reveal the “Venus,” a champagne caddy of sorts designed by Koons for Dom Perignon. “The first thing that came to mind was to do this balloon Venus, because it really represents a continuation of life energy,” Koons explains, “I think

martha stewart Everywhere I go, I seek out creative entrepreneurs, whether it's artisans and craftsmen, small farmers and gardeners, or restaurateurs that use fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I admire the courage and self-reliance it takes to start your own business and make it succeed, so I try to visit all the local markets, stores and boutiques I can to lend support. The highlight of my summer was my visit to the Annual Trade Secrets garden event in Sharon, Conn., which showcases rare plants and beautiful garden antiques. I love this event so much that I mark it in my calendar a year ahead of time. This year, like always, I met some extraordinary gardeners, potters and craftsmen and filled a van with beautiful plants to take home. I've been supporting some of the same small businesses for years, and it's always a pleasure to see how they're progressing. Many of these talented people have been featured on my personal daily blog on marthastewart.com and highlighted in my magazine, Martha Stewart Living. They've been considered for our annual American Made celebration, which will be in New York City Oct. 15-17. As in years past, we'll be showcasing a selection of honorees and “makers,” including several I encountered in my recent travels. Being able to put them in the spotlight and give them wider recognition—that’s a great feeling.

The past few months, I have been fortunate enough to travel to some truly amazing destinations. I gain inspiration for my collection in my travels; I love meeting new people and experiencing new cultures and places. Recently, I traveled to Morocco. The village markets were incredible, and I even rode a camel through the desert! I had the

opportunity to travel to Israel. It’s such a sacred place to me as it's where I spent a majority of my youth, and I always make it a point to catch up with old friends when I’m there. Israel is the happiest, most vibrant place I know! I went to Turks and Caicos with my two children, Jeremey and Zoe. We celebrated the end of the school year and had the best time swimming and playing on the beach; the ocean was crystal clear and beautiful. 2013 marks my 40th anniversary in business, and I have visited as many of my international stores as possible to thank all the wonderful people who have been so supportive of me. I look forward to traveling back to Istanbul, the location of my first international boutique, and sharing my Elie Tahari 1974 Edition capsule collection with the beautiful people there. For me, it’s not the destination that makes traveling fun; it’s the people you share it with and the memories you create that make the trip.

todd diciurcio Traveling is definitely the best part about being an artist. Living in Brooklyn, my creativity is anchored working in New York City, but seeing the world and doing what you love cannot be measured by any words other than "you just had to be there." The people you know and the new ones you meet are the inspiration gateways to this circle of creating. For that reason, music and travel are two of the biggest influences on my art. Whether taking photographs in a new country while on a surfing trip or drawing a band play live in the context of the musical performance, I try to capture that moment in time—a visceral response to the sounds and energy that are unique to each of these experiences. While nothing can replicate the act of drawing from life, social media has completely changed how we document our experiences. The immediacy of taking pictures and then posting them straight away makes the world much smaller and more accessible. As my next adventures eagerly await, including upcoming surfing trips to Kandui and Costa Rica, I look forward to posting snapshots of new travel experiences. Recently, I was invited to draw live at the Splendour in the Grass music festival in Byron Bay, Australia. This adventure was a high point for me this year, especially since some of my great friends live in Byron Bay, including Taylor Steele, my partner in Evil Twin, our film and video production company. The incredible thing about the festival is that they really embrace and integrate a full arts program to enhance the overall experience for festival-goers. For three days straight, I spent my time going from show to show drawing bands live from on stage during their performances. The access provided gave me an exclusive vantage point to work from throughout the entire festival

At age 35, Akerman gave birth to her first child, a son named Sebastian, this April. It’s an entirely new role for her, but one that thrills her. “It’s amazing having my first child. I think any woman will say it's the biggest joy of her life,” she says enthusiastically. But doesn’t it cramp her formerly free-spirited

She also has a soft spot for the truffle fries at the Bowery Hotel after a late night out. Akerman sighs as she laments, “I wish CBGB was still there.” The classic punk-rock club on the Bowery may now be a Jon Varvatos store, but Akerman will help to resurrect its spirit in Randall Miller's indie film "CBGB." Don’t expect it to be a pretty picture. The trailer for the film notes that CBGB had “50,000 bands and one disgusting bathroom.” Akerman plays Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry, who performed at the club in 1975, decked out in trash-rock gear. Long before she ever took on the role, Akerman and her husband, rocker Roberto Zincone (whom she met when they were both in the band The Petalstones) had a collage of musicians papering their bathroom, which featured Debbie Harry at least five times. Harry wasn’t the only one on that wall, of course. Akerman has a taste for music nearly as wide as her taste for roles. She loves everything from AC/DC to The Lumineers to Etta James. “I think being married to a musician and having been in a band myself made me

especially excited to learn more about the history of CBGB and how it became this fabulous club,” she explains. “The project piqued my interest in the punk movement.” She was delighted to act alongside Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who transforms into Iggy Pop in the film, and to share a moment with Alan Rickman, who plays the club’s founder, Hilly Kristal (who originally named the club CBGB, for what he thought would be a country, bluegrass and blues joint). But her main focus is naturally Harry, whom she thinks “is very unique and her own artist. She’s kind of quirky in her own beautiful way.” Harry seems to approve. While the two have yet to meet, Harry says Akerman “is fabulous.” Akerman is thrilled to hear it. She laughs that Harry is now more than just a picture on her wall and maintains, “Debbie Harry is stunning, but she’s never played on that. She’s a punk at heart. I love that, and she comes across to me as very strong, as a force to be reckoned with. She was this punk girl who was getting her footing.” That strength is especially evident in the YouTube videos of Harry that show her performing at CBGB, looking tougher than she did in her late ’70s and early ’80s incarnations. Akerman watched those clips to prepare for the role. Brendan Sullivan, the music journalist and author of "Rivington Was Ours," patronized CBGB at age 15 and remembers, “Debbie was 30 when she was at CBGB. It was a move she did after being a waitress at Max’s Kansas City. Madonna, Britney, Miley Cyrus, that kind of pop act is about being a young virginal thing. Debbie Harry’s stage character is automatically a mature, grown woman, which means it’s a great role for Malin Akerman, who is already a strong adult.” Being seen as a force to be reckoned with, and even a little bit punk rock, is an evolution for Akerman. It’s easy to forget that, as well as starring in romantic comedies; she has played a drug dealer in Catch .44 and a superhero, Silk Spectre, in Watchmen. But, of course, it’s as difficult for her to find those charged roles as it is for many women in Hollywood. “I do love female power. We don’t have enough female-driven films where we have strong women, but my biggest genre is comedy, so the characters I’m portraying might not be as much strong women as really funny women. But if I got offers for more roles like Silk Spectre, I’d so go for it.” Harry may well be the superheroine of rock 'n' roll. And we have a hunch that when the world sees Malin Akerman transform from blonde to Blondie, there will be more substantial roles in the near future.

Called “Sunnier Days,” you can still hear the impact of Garcia’s Argentine heritage and his parents’ old records, but the sound is more polished, more lush and all-around gorgeous. Get ready for Garcia to be recrowned a sex symbol—this time, with a more sophisticated, wiser bent.

The companion figure is unforgettable: it’s a cartoony character with a bubbled skull and crossbones head and the letter X on his Mickey Mouse-like gloved hands. KAWS' use of the “X” has become a strong and frequent symbol in his paintings and sculptures. “It does reoccur a lot. It's originally when I started painting over the ads. I started using the skull and crossbones. And then, I started to twiddle it down to its basics. The 'X' is a strong mark.” Though he continues to maintain strong views, many aspects of KAWS’ life are in a state of transition. To the dismay of many fans, he recently shuttered Original Fake, his prolific product and toy-design operation, a collaborative business with the Japanese company Medicom. Original Fake once released a new piece of clothing or a toy every week. Sadly, he doesn't know if he “will ever create toys again. The store was great. I was doing collaborations with a lot of different artists and it got to the point where I kind of wanted to set up my own home base. I did that. I don't feel the need to continue it,” he explains. “At a seven-year point I felt it was time for the store to close. I wanted to direct my attention toward other things and other projects and come back to it eventually.” Does he still tag or do graffiti on the street? He sighs and responds firmly with a “no.” He would rather talk about working with other artists than his early days spray painting around the city. “It's always fun to how they operate.” KAWS’ collaborators are impressive and include Marc Jacobs, Pharrell, Kanye West, Burton Snowboards, Nike, Comme des Garçons, Hennessy, the cult Japanese clothing line A Bathing Ape and many others. Despite being a creative control freak, KAWS has always had his eye on the dollar. “I got into the School of Visual Arts and realized I could make a living. When I went to SVA, I was an illustration major. I was thinking of art as a practical thing. The idea of showing at galleries and collaborations were not on my radar.” Now that he's a world-famous artist and designer, KAWS tries to ignore criticism from the media. “There's a lot of weird shit online. You can either get caught up in it or not,” he says, rolling his eyes about an interview with British street artist Banksy. Although the artist doubts Banksy telling him to go “fuck off” is true, KAWS tends to stay away from the downside of a Google search. KAWS’ whole life is wrapped up in his work, which he produces at a pace that would make Warhol proud. “I wake up thinking about what I

After Hurricane Sandy destroyed Governor, their first eatery in the space, they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to let anything stop them from opening a second restaurant to showcase their ever-so-splendid culinary talents. With an open kitchen, diners watch chef Laurent work his magic on each and every dish, such as the marrow ravioli and the quinoa tagliatelle. Laurent exudes the feeling that you are a special guest in his home for the ultimate foodie dinner party.

A garden terrace leads to the main dining room, warmly lit and stretching back further than you might have guessed before entering. Upstairs, a second floor features more seating, a private dining room and an additional bar. The décor is a bit nautical, but not ostentatiously so, with beautiful custom-built wood accents and framed maps on the walls. This nod to exploration is echoed on the menu, on which a map is printed showing locations in New York and Connecticut, among others, where The East Pole and The Fat Radish source their food. The dinner menu, which Winser notes will change seasonally, features earthy starters like the beetroot and walnut hummus, and an heirloom bean salad served with crispy pig cheeks and relish. For dinner, Winser recommends the chicken kiev, accompanied by charred broccoli and a “Timberdoodle broccoli puree,” or, for the less carnivorously inclined, the East Pole macro plate. liquer and lemon, is a potent standout. The Marlton Hotel is MacPherson’s latest project and just opened its doors as a “baby grand hotel” in the West Village. Built in 1900, MacPherson decided to renovate what was originally known as Marlton House and was once a Beat Generation flophouse for Neil Cassady, Gregory Corso and Jack Kerouac, who wrote The Subterraneans and Tristessa while living there. And Valerie Solanas, famous for shooting Andy Warhol, lived in room 214 at the time she shot the pop artist in 1968.

king khan a daytime visit with nightlife royalty nur khan text by jennifer wright photography by peter murdock Walking into nightlife impresario Nur Khan’s Chinatown loft feels like stepping onto a Hollywood set of the lair of an ancient warlord. Skulls pepper the apartment in the form of busts as well as two massive swirl paintings that Khan worked on with his close friend, artist Damien Hirst. Across the room from the Moroccan rugs and Balinese daybed is a totem comprised of wincing demonic forms. The effect is pure Addams Family—“mysterious and spooky,” maybe even “altogether kooky.” Given the surroundings, you might expect the creator of the Rose Bar and owner of The Electric Room to be a menacing figure. That is, until you meet him. Then, the gothic backdrop only seems to throw Khan’s soft-spoken, gentlemanly personality into relief. “That totem is Balinese!” he explains cheerfully, while adjusting the plague-doctor mask necklace designed by his friend Lazaro (of John Varvatos fame) around his neck. “It’s all gray, because it used to be outside on my roof patio. It looks gnarly, but it actually wards off evil spirits as far as the Balinese are concerned. It’s good luck, actually. The dragons are good luck.” Dragons have special significance for Khan, who spent a year practicing martial arts at a Chinese Shaolin temple in 2004. “My Shaolin temple name is Shaolin Brother, Incredible Dragon,” he says. The name was chosen because of his dragon tattoos, but it is also appropriate for someone who seems to have led a fortunate life. The more you look around the apartment, the more the focus appears to be on celebrating and prolonging life, not death. Amid the skulls and numerous memento mori, there are abundant tokens of good times with his friends. On a table by the bed, there is a photo of Kate Moss, her mother and Khan posing in 1920s costumes. They all make fetching gangsters. Then there’s one of him performing with Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction and Richard Fortus from Guns N’ Roses. To the right, there’s a photo of Khan with Keith Richards, who is sporting an oversized crown. “I go up to his house for the holidays every now and then, for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Khan notes, indicating that the crown is not Richards' usual attire (though if anyone could get away with it, he could). There’s even a customized Ovation guitar in the living room, given to him by his friend Axl Rose. Khan doesn’t play, but he keeps it around for the pleasure of his friends who do. “I don’t know what I’d do without martial arts. I’d be too lopsided— it’s the yin to my yang with nightlife.” Cluttered on the glass-topped, tree-trunk table Khan brought back from Bali are a scattering of martial arts DVDs. “It’s key to the way I balance my life,” says Khan, who began practicing judo at 8 years old. “I don’t know what I’d do without martial arts. I’d be too lopsided—it’s the yin to my yang with nightlife.” The apartment also houses a punching bag and set of well-worn boxing gloves. There’s even a Solé bicycle propped up on the wall. Khan’s fridge is similarly health-conscious. The initial impression of the apartment might lead you to expect it to contain rare wine, to be drunk from 18th-century goblets, but instead it’s stocked with drinks from Juice Press. They are part of Khan’s attempt to give up sugar, salt, carbs and dairy. “I stopped drinking beer a year ago, but sake is my poison. I’ve quit everything else, pretty much, but not that,” he says, while standing next to an edition of Damien Hirst’s 2005 Pharmaceutical photograph. That may seem like a funny juxtaposition. However, “If you look at Damien’s work, it’s all about life and death,” Khan explains. “And that’s what everything is.” He indicates a cartoon, hidden off to the side of a wall in which a skull proclaims “Fuck Death.” He explains that it was a gift from Hirst. “When he made that one, I said, 'Make one that fits my personality.' So he made one that said ‘Fuck Death." In a nearby space, a skull and crossbones exclaim, “We’re here to booze,” which also seems fitting (though only with sake) considering the legendary parties Khan used to hold at his 8,000-square-foot Meatpacking loft. However, he claims he does so less often now. “When I have people over now, it’s six people pretty much.” That’s because, when he hosts a large crowd, “I worry about the art.” Death then might be nothing to fear, but having something happen to that collection of Hirsts? You’d have to have a heart of steel not to worry about that.

On Real Estate 3RD QUARTER 2013 The inventory of available apartments remains well below last year. However, the number of closings rose from 2012â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third quarter. In the beginning of September, there was a 3.3 month supply of apartments for sale in Manhattan, down from 4.2 months in August. A year ago the absorption rate was 5.2 months. The absorption rate is the number of months it would take to sell all active listings in a given market. Historically, an absorption rate between 6 and 9 months indicates a balance between supply and demand. Inventory remained scarcest on the West Side, where the absorption rate fell to just 2.5 months. Over the past year the East Side saw the biggest drop in its absorption rate, which fell 45 percent from 6.4 months to 3.5 months. Both the average and median prices were higher than a year ago. The average time on the market for units sold fell dramatically.

After all, that’s what everyone else on the planet has been doing since your VMAs appearance, and, besides, I’m the guy who ritualistically chastises celebrities for a living. I read into Amanda Bynes, deflated Anthony Weiner and undressed Dolce & Gabbana. But to you, I say, "Bravo!" I love what you did! And I’m not even joking! My friends and I watched your performance and agreed that it was the high point of the night, full of raunchy delight and giddy spirits. It was the kind of thing I’d love in a nightclub, so why not applaud it on TV, especially when pulled off with such shameless abandon, not to mention a suitably awkward-looking Robin Thicke dancing around like a used-car salesman gussied up for a Saturday night gala? The sour looks on the celebrities in the audience as you worked your ditzy magic really mystified me. Every single one of them has done horrifying personal things. Their antics are constant grist for the tabloids, and yet here they were, dissing you for doing something perfectly legal and carefree. Part of it must have been sheer jealousy that you were hijacking the night, but that wasn’t the main dynamic at work here. It was the puritanical edge that takes over so many Americans when faced with something overtly sexual. Being comfortable with sex is considered a no-no in our culture. We’d rather make everyone grow up with silence and shame surrounding the topic instead of acknowledging that it can actually be pleasurable. This is the same sensibility that had Elvis’s pelvis labeled as dangerous, the Beatles targeted as a pack of heathen and Madonna branded a satanic succubus. And it turned out that none of those stars really hurt anybody, did they? (Though Madonna was rude to me once, but that’s another story.) Neither will you, Miley. You had to do something outrageous to break out of the Disney mold you’d been forced into, way before you were able to make career choices for yourself. You were desperate to announce to the world, “I’m not Hannah Montana anymore,” and you did so with a vengeance. No one will ever think of you as a child star (or even an ex-child star) again.
