Donald Hicks is a New York City-based fashion stylist. His signature aesthetic has a sharp focus on texture, contrast, clean lines and silhouettes that lean toward the classic but with a dark edge. His recent work can be found in various magazines such as Muse, Open Lab, Sheer, Vestal, Noise, FV and Vulture. Hicks styled singer Natalia Kills.

Alex Catarinella is a freelance writer. After interning at downtown staple Paper magazine in college, Alex has gone on to write for a number of international publications, both print and digital. Some of these include MTV Style, ELLE, i-D, Wonderland, Dazed & Confused, Fashionista and V. For his first SCENE feature, Catarinella spoke to his friend Natalia Kills.

Rebecca Carroll is a Brooklyn-based writer, editor and the author of several nonfiction books on race in America, including the award-winning Sugar in the Raw. Her profiles and essays have appeared in The New York Times and on Jezebel, GOOD, The Daily Beast and The Aesthete, where she is currently managing editor. Fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, who has two candy stores called CuRious, sells black cotton candy and edible utensils and plates. Paper’s editorial director, Mickey Boardman, samples gilded green cotton candy. Deejays Andrew Andrew present “nut mixology”— various cocktails made from mixed nuts. At the opening: David Byrne, Anna Sui, Sarah Lerfel from Colette, Bill Cunningham snapping absolutely everything, Danny Bowein from the insanely popular Mission Chinese on the Lower East Side, legendary food critic Mimi Sheraton, Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi, Debi Mazar, who has a juicy role in Lovelace as an aging porn actress, and Fiona Byrne carrying a McDonald’s tote bag. The following week, literary journal The American Reader hosts a reading and recital at Chelsea’s Robert Miller Gallery, where pianist Serene Han plays a 1971 Yayoi Kusama-painted piano—a piece polka-dotted in the artist’s signature palette of red, white and black. Han played a selection from Bach’s "The Goldberg Variations" alongside a reading of Robert Coover’s "The Goldilocks Variations" (a literary riff on Bach’s musical work). A small group of attendees later decamps to new Lower East Side restaurant Miller’s Near and Far (owned and operated by Robert Miller’s son, Christopher Miller) for a celebratory meal. The crowd, an appropriate mix of writers and artists, took many a boozy smoking breaks, each of which included lengthy discussions about beach reads and literary self-prophecies. We even encounter a Long Island City-based novelist who discusses his recent release about a man with one testicle. Upon further investigation, we are told that the book is in no way autobiographical but, by chance, his next book would be. In a toast to the end of summer, we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

In August, New York’s revolving door of glitzy events plays to a slower tempo. The humidity renders even the most perfectly blown-out hair frizzy, and silk eveningwear has to be sent to the dry cleaner the next day. However, despite the muggy weather, a few evenings are decidedly very cool. Those brave enough to leave their air-conditioned apartments flock to stylish rooftops. Never one to shy away from a party, Andrew Saffir’s Cinema Society hosts a multitude of screenings with corresponding rooftop fêtes, like pornoinspired flick Lovelace and satirical rom-com Austenland. An impressive audience turns up at MoMA to catch the New York premiere of Amanda Seyfried’s much-buzzed-about portrayal of Deep Throat actress Linda Lovelace. The film stars Sharon Stone (dowdy and unrecogizeable as Lovelace’s religious mother), Peter Sarsgaard, Juno Temple, Chris Noth, Bobby Cannavale and Adam Brody. The party is equally star-studded and brings out the likes of Gloria Steinem (a friend of the late Lovelace), Zac Posen, Joan Smalls, Nicole Miller, Zachary Quinto, Estelle and a leather-dress-clad Zosia Mamet. The crowd later assembles on the roof of Midtown’s new Refinery Hotel, where, between bites of Tuscan canapés, actor James Marsden confesses that he wishes more actual porn had been in the film. (Note: There is hardly any.) Later in the month, former Felicity star Keri Russell’s new flick, Austenland, fêtes its New York premiere with a Cinema Society screening at the Lower East Side’s Landmark Sunshine Cinema and an after-party at Jimmy, the James Hotel’s rooftop space. The film follows Russell’s Jane Austen-obsessed character on her journey to Austenland, a theme resort built for lovelorn Austen devotees. The film of course wouldn’t be complete without its own sullen version of Mr. Darcy, this one played by J.J. Feild. Mr. Feild’s real-life partnership with '90s starlet Neve Campbell did not stop female guests from hunting the dapper Englishman on the banks of Jimmy’s rooftop pool. Unsurprisingly, their search gave way to less-thanstellar results, but it’s a fact universally acknowledged that cocktails can take some of the sting out of romantic defeat. Aside from glitzy rooftop bashes, the month also played home to some artistic adventures. Paper magazine launches its second annual

terrapin stationers pushes the envelope text by peter davis

The days of handwritten notes are back. Thanks to the stylish and witty Ted Harrington and his old-school cool company, Terrapin Stationers, writing a letter has never been more in fashion. “I notice a lot of people are actually posting handwritten notes online,” Harrington says over the clink and grind of letterpress machines that are more than a century old. “It means something to write a note, to have something nice to write.” The Terrapin Stationers space is dominated by massive machines that can emboss, engrave and turn letters or symbols into mini works of custom-made art. They use inks that range from shiny metallic to the brightest day-glow blue imaginable. Every job Terrapin takes on is custom, and each piece of paper or notecard is hand-fed one at a time. It’s couture writing paper— right down to the last letter. No one appreciates or understands the luxury of couture like the fashion world, which embraced Terrapin from the start. Harrington continually works with Marc Jacobs, Aerin Lauder and Tory Burch, to name just a few. “Tory was married with babies when I met her,” he says with a smile. “Now she is bigger than Oprah.” Terrapin is the go-to stationery company for glamorous parties, luxe business cards for power players and over-the-top wedding invitations. But check out Terrapin’s Instagram feed, and you’ll see stuff engraved with words that might get censored by the conservative set. Cards declaring “WTF,” “FUCK OFF BREAST CANCER” and “JE FUCKING T’AIME” or engraved with symbols like neon-pink hand grenades or silver razor blades are attracting a new customer that is more Lower East Side art director than Park Avenue socialite. “The word 'fuck' appears in five different things that I have out of 100,” Harrington pleads. “So people assume I’m the 'fuck' guy. But it’s not really all what we do.” What Terrapin does is beautiful stationery that feels both modern and traditional. Envelopes are lined with a camouflage print or maps for a "wow" moment when opening a letter. Harrington’s work inspires you to pick up a pen and write a letter—just to show off how awesome your stationery is. And Harrington keeps on pushing the—excuse the pun—envelope with new ideas. “It’s not a science, it’s an art,” he says of handmade stationery, adding, “I don’t censor. He drives a fleet of vintage cars, lives in a retro-chic Los Angeles lair decorated by the design collective Commune and has a penchant for tailored clothes. Designer Derek Mattison is practically a West Coast James Bond—with the wardrobe to prove it. Born and raised in Detroit, Mattison’s love for a well-tailored lifestyle came from his corporate world days when he started ESN Interactive.“I always wore blazers and always played around with tailored goods to compete with the bankers and venture capitalists,” Mattison says. Today, Mattison has abandoned office life for his storefront on Melrose Place. Inside, the number of wares on display is growing rapidly. The clear standout items are tailored suiting pieces with their signature thin lapel. The subtle detail gives an instant injection of modernity, but Mattison doesn’t envision any baby-faced actors wearing his clothes. When asked if there are any celebrities he would like to see wearing his designs, Mattison rattles off a confounding trifecta: David Byrne, David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch. “For some reason, I lean toward these older guys, not these younger Hollywood heartthrobs,” he admits. His years in Los Angeles have clearly not gone to his head. To him, it’s simply home. “I set up my life here,” he says. “I travel enough, in some cases maybe too much, that when I get back to L.A., I’m like, ‘Ah! This is nice!'" What has not been quite as nice for Mattison is forging a new model for designing and manufacturing luxury goods in a city reliant on cheap fabrics and fuse seams—a quality he despises in garments. It has admittedly been an uphill battle. “The infrastructure of what historically is produced in L.A. is not what I’m producing,” he says. “I’m using neoprene wet-suit material,” he continues, excitedly tripping over his words. Among these neoprene looks is, in fact, a perfectly tailored, water-friendly tuxedo. There’s lots of substances around,” SKATERS front man Michael Ian Cummings remembers. “Suddenly, this guy says, ‘Drink this!’ It was really sweet and tasty. Then he revealed that it was breast milk, which was disgusting, because, honestly, it was good.” Cummings may consider London to be the craziest party city he has been to recently, but he and bandmates Noah Rubin and Joshua Hubbard think of New York as their true home. Based in Chinatown, the trio gained a widespread online audience, without the help of a label, by posting catchy punk singles perfect for thrashing in those last hours before dawn. “It’s unreal to see venues full of people when you’ve started grassroots,” Cummings says. “There’s such a community aspect.” Already hailed as the new Strokes, SKATERS are now signed to Warner Bros., and the boys are putting the final touches on their

Pop Lipps, which hits shelves in October, is a combination of photographs and writing from Lipps’ life and promises to give outsiders a whirlwind tour of off-duty models, VIP rooms and celebrity pals. Though Lipps travels around the world, he says that New York is the perfect city to accomplish his goals. “If I’m going to be in New York, I’m going to be working my ass off,” he declares, flipping through some photographs he took that morning. “It’s an intense place to live, but that’s New York for you. Scott Lipps is outside of his office snapping photographs of lanky brunettes on the cobblestones of Bond Street. The founder of One Management has only a brief time to do so. Then, camera in hand, he rushes upstairs to deal with the hundreds of day-to-day operations that accompany running the modeling agency he started 12 years ago. It’s amazing that Lipps finds any time to be the lead drummer for the Courtney Love-fronted band, Hole. But then, when you have a passion for something, you make the time. Lipps got into music at the age of 17, after moving to Los Angeles. “I told my dad I was going to P.I.T., which he thought was the Pittsburg Institute of Technology, but was actually the Percussion Institute of Technology. I was going to be a rock star,” Lipps says. That didn’t happen quite the way he expected. Lipps managed various bands for years, leaving his own drumsticks untouched. Eventually, Lipps left the music scene and became a driver for Next Model Management agency, owned by his cousin, marking the beginning of a new career. In 1997, he returned to New York to refurbish the European agency Karin and, a few years later, founded One Management. One expanded into a full-fledged entertainment company in 2006. Successful as One Management is—it represents Iman, Claudia Schiffer and Bar Refaeli, to name a few—Lipps never completely gave up his rock star dreams. One of his buddies connected him with Courtney Love to play an event. During a sound check before the show, Lipps played the drums and was deemed “better than their own drummer” by Love’s band. “We played together that night, and it was pretty electric,” Lipps says. After that evening, he joined the band and has been touring the country with them, while simultaneously running One Management. All of this makes for an extremely eventful life, which Lipps is constantly Instagramming and updating for his

Scott Campbell has long been known as the tattoo artist of choice for celebrities like Marc Jacobs, Orlando Bloom and Sting. But now he’s making a new mark with his Saved Wines label. Campbell was always attracted to the symbolic role wine has played throughout history and its influence on art and expression. After visiting California’s Central Coast, he teamed up with Clay Brock, a second-generation winemaker in Sedona. Campbell was attracted to Brock's style and passion for the business, and they quickly bonded over their mutual interest in Old World winemaking. And so Saved Wines was born. The label was named after Campbell’s Brooklyn tattoo parlor and made its debut in August with a red and a rosé. The red is described to be “a robust, powerful wine with a big personality and generous finish,” while Campbell describes the rosé as “a pink wine for tough guys.” Leaving Brock to expertly perfect the flavors, Campbell put his artistic talent to use to create the bottles. Both bottles have a diamond-shaped design imprinted directly onto the glass and the name of Campbell's wife, actress Lake Bell, is hidden somewhere in the details. Bell must have been pleased. At the launch event on the rooftop of the Jane Hotel, the couple could be seen sharing congratulatory kisses throughout the evening. charlotte ronson This summer, I’ve been lucky enough to squeeze in lots and lots of travel, meeting up with loved ones in Amagansett, Mykonos and Istanbul. All of these places are truly inspiring. I was born in London, so it still feels like home whenever I visit, as a lot of my family still live there. I love Amagansett. I have been going there ever since I moved to the States. I have now been to Mykonos four times with my English family—such a beautiful place with the perfect amount of wind in the air to actually let you enjoy the sunshine. I went to Istanbul for the first time, and I fell in love with the beautiful and elaborate palaces, the islands that only allow horse-drawn carriages as transportation and sell floral headpieces at every local stall. This is my kind of place. Everything I saw was pure eye candy. I can’t wait to look back at all of my photographs and hopefully let them set the mood, as well as influence many of my upcoming collections. Summer always goes too quickly, so I shall look forward to my next escape.

“A good piece of art raises questions— it doesn’t answer them.” Rebecca Hall is a thinking person’s movie star. The 31-yearold Brit, perhaps best known as the uptight foil in Woody Allen’s Spanish romp Vicky Cristina Barcelona, brings depth and a measured poise to all of her roles. She’s tall—at 5’10”, you might say statuesque—and beautiful, but it’s her native ability to intuit characters’ backstories that has endeared her to directors and audiences. To see why, you need only watch her subtle, nuanced performance in Ben Affleck’s The Town, Ron Howard’s Frost/ Nixon or Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige. Her presence onscreen would lead you to believe she’s an old soul with a quick wit who is very clearly bright. In person, she is all those things. When I suggested we discuss her childhood, for instance, she deadpanned, sitting on a couch, “Should I lie down?” Hall avoids roles she doesn’t find challenging, and she’s particular about those she does take on—one manifestation of the confidence that makes her an intriguing performer. She maintains a balanced, intelligent approach to her work and has engendered plenty of industry respect. It’s only a matter of time until she becomes a household name. Hall has the rare ability to move from indie project to blockbuster with alacrity. After playing Sylvia Tietjens in Parade’s End, she appeared in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3. To go from period pieces to super-hero flicks means straddling different universes, but, as she puts it, “If one can straddle a lot of universes, one ought to.” Still, you’re more likely to see her play meatier, more difficult parts in films that have cultural resonance. Her latest is a good example. Closed Circuit is a suspense thriller, set very much in the now. The plot revolves around the legal aftermath of a terrorist bombing in London. Hall plays Claudia Simmons-Howe, a barrister (British for lawyer) appointed to handle the defense of the suspect, alongside fellow counsel Martin Rose (Eric Bana). Though each is the epitome of professionalism, both have complications in their private lives as the result of an affair between the two that went badly sometime before the action of the film begins. As they learn to trust each other again, they’re thrust in the midst of a powerful conspiracy. The movie relentlessly addresses big themes: notions of privacy in a post-9/11 (and -7/7) world, and the uncomfortable relationship between ensuring public safety and enshrining

personal freedoms. Closed Circuit refuses to draw any firm conclusions. To her diplomatic credit, neither does Hall: “A good piece of art raises questions; it doesn’t answer them. That’s what this is doing—starting a discussion.” She continues, “It’s about what we’re allowed to know, what we’re not allowed to know and how much that infringes on our civil liberties. Are we O.K. with that if it means we can live in a safer society?” Then, referring to the security imbroglio brought to light by Edward Snowden, she jokes that she has taken to signing off her emails with sweet little missives to the NSA: “Cup of tea? I’ve just put the kettle on!” “She got funnier and funnier as the shoot went on,” Bana says. “Towards the end, I remember saying to her—we were being completely ridiculous and we’d both just done something stupid in front of each other—‘Ah! Who knew that could come out of the conservative one?’ She was like, ‘What!?’ She seemed so offended that my initial thought was that she was this quiet person.” John Crowley, director of Closed Circuit, agrees: “There was a lot of laughter.” He continues, “She’s super smart but wears it very, very lightly. You would never mistake her humor for anything less than absolute seriousness about the work.” Though filled with brainy choices, Hall’s filmography only tells part of her story. Her first love is the theater, and even as she started appearing in features—her first was Starter for 10 (2006), opposite James McAvoy—she starred in productions of canonical works like As You Like It, Man and Superman and The Cherry Orchard. In a way, she’s a stage performer masquerading as a film actress. “Just doing one is a bit like going to the gym and only working out on the cross-trainer,” she says. “You’ve got to do the weights. I think doing film makes me a better theater actor, and theater makes me a better film actor. It’s different muscles.” Her next role will see her perform on Broadway for the first time. Hall and director Lyndsey Turner are mounting Sophie Treadwell’s expressionist 1927 play Machinal at the American Airlines Theatre later this fall, opening on Jan. 16. “She is an actor of rare complexity, depth and humanity,” Turner says “Essential qualities for Sophie Treadwell's remarkable writing.” The story is based on the infamous trial and execution of Ruth Snyder, a woman who was sentenced to the electric chair for conspiring with her lover to murder > 48

“If one can straddle a lot of universes, one ought to.” her husband. (The incident also inspired James Cain’s Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice.) “It’s very powerful and very strange,” Hall says. “You come out feeling like you can’t quite breathe. There’s this sense of this woman’s life being suffocated by the forces around her.” When it’s suggested that the grind of being on stage six nights per week, in the dead of winter, performing such a heavy role might not be the most enjoyable of experiences, Hall jokes, “I know! I said to my agent, ‘Please, can I do a comedy next?’ [Laughs] Lena Dunham, please!’” Don’t expect Hall on Girls too soon, though. Theater runs in her blood. Hall is the daughter of Sir Peter Hall, founder of Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company and former director of the country’s National Theatre; her mother is American opera singer Maria Ewing, whose repertoire includes Carmen, Salome and The Marriage of Figaro. Though a dual citizen of Britain and the United States, she grew up in London in creative circles—she met Tom Stoppard at age 14 while attending parties thrown by the playwright with her father. She enjoyed a privileged entry into her chosen field; her first role was appearing in The Chamomile Lawn, a 1992 television series directed by her dad. But Hall was determined to make her creative passions into her career on her own. She was a precocious child and recalls how her stay at the all-girls Rodean School in Brighton—where she was appointed Head Girl, having managed to capture what she calls the ironic vote—shaped her. “My English teacher said, ‘It’s O.K. to be pretentious, because you’ve got to start somewhere. You can’t graduate being intelligent about anything unless you start off being pretentious.’ It’s a fabulous way of looking at things. I always loved her for saying that.” Hall continues with a laugh, “I was a slightly odd combination. I was quite shy and also quite opinionated. Actually, I don’t think much has changed. I’m just better at pretending I’m not shy and quiet these days.” Hall continued on to study English literature at Cambridge University, where she appeared in plays and set up a theater company but dropped out before graduating. When asked about her decision to voluntarily leave

one of the world’s finest institutes of higher education, she’s unequivocal. “It was to do with making a choice that bucked a trend. Part of me just wanted to go, ‘I don’t want the comfort of having this degree from Cambridge to tell everyone I’m smart.’ I wanted to know in myself at that age that I was capable of making a controversial choice and sticking to it—something other people would think is throwing everything away. If I could make it then, I could make those choices for the rest of my life.” It was a bold move, and it has served her well. Hall has enjoyed the sort of success that has allowed her to be transcontinental. London is home, but she maintains a “shoe box” in the West Village for extended stays in New York City. Though she’s recognized more frequently in London, she maintains a low profile. Lately, she has been working on her own short stories and screenplays. “I really enjoy sitting in a room by myself and writing. Whether or not it will ever come to anything is something else, but I love doing it.” She’s also something of a fledgling deejay: She played the music at her last cast wrap party and is a fan of East Village Radio’s "Chances With Wolves" broadcast. But she’s a private person working in a public sphere, which inevitably means unwanted attention. When her relationship with Sam Mendes became public—the director opened up about it in 2011—Hall refused to discuss the matter. Though ill at ease discussing her personal life, she’s more engaged when discussing her upcoming projects. They include appearing in the directorial debut of Nolan’s go-to director of photography, Wally Pfister. Called Transcendence, the film is about scientists working to achieve technological singularity in which computers can surpass the powers of the human brain. It stars Johnny Depp and features a number of actors familiar to fans of Nolan’s work, like Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy. “It’s all done and dusted,” Hall says. “It’s going to be really awesome.” When pressed on any further details, though, Hall demurs. “I’m not really allowed to talk about it.” She says laughing. “It’s got to stay shrouded in mystery.” That, one suspects, is the way she prefers it.

“I've spent most of my teen years trying to escape everything: my parents, myself, my l ack of money, my l ack of common sense.” Maybe it was the combo of the British accent, the filter-free cheeky banter or her penchant for glam Goth eyeliner, but my love affair with Natalia Kills began immediately. Given her recent popularity, I’m certainly not the only one who felt that way. Perhaps that’s how will.i.am felt when he signed the English singer-songwriter. Because, really, what’s not to love? Natalia’s sophomore album, Trouble, is supremely, alarmingly catchy. She cites early Alanis Morissette, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson as influences. Backed by screeching guitars and thunderous drums courtesy of mega-producer Jeff Bhasker— known for his work with Lana del Rey, Kanye West and fun.—in addition to a handful of shadowy suicide ballads, "Trouble" is like nothing you’ve ever heard before on the Top 40 charts. Despite the fact that Natalia has opened for Katy Perry, there are no “baby, you’re a firework!” love-thyself moments in her songs. Still, Natalia is definitely what one would call a firecracker. Since meeting Natalia in a Soho loft during Fashion Week in 2011, we’ve gone on many debauched adventures. We’ve been handed tickets in the Dubai Mall for violating the United Arab Emirates dress code (we love a good midriff moment). We’ve filmed a potentially dangerous music video at 5 a.m. in a desolate downtown subway station for her stripper-anthem, “Problem.” The video featured Natalia in nothing but lingerie, fishnets, Prada shades and a mink. She later ignited the aforementioned mink on her uptown rooftop, resulting in panic from the neighbors. It was her brand of a firework moment. We recently hit up our favorite downtown spot, The Smile, for a banter-heavy, highly caffeinated afternoon. Natalia explained, filterfree as always, why she is, indeed, a problem. Alex Catarinella: Do you remember when we met? Natalia Kills: The reason I remember is because I was terrified. It was a Fashion Week party, and there were all of these New Yorkers there. I had only been to New York a couple of times and never to perform or anything. Your first time in New York is like a car crash. It's the most high-impact, life-changing thing that can happen. You suddenly feel your heart beating and realize you're alive for the first time. I felt like I had just had the best car crash ever; I had woken up for the first time ever. It was amazing and terrifying. AC: Do you remember what you wore? I sure do. NK: I was wearing high-waisted shorts and handcuffs as a belt because my belt had broke.

AC: Yes! So, you moved to New York about two years ago from L.A., and before that you were doing your thing in London. How has NYC influenced your new album, Trouble? NK: I've spent most of my teen years trying to escape everything: my parents, myself, my lack of money, my lack of common sense and all the trouble I got into. When I moved to L.A., I somehow managed to recreate the exact kind of lifestyle and shit pile from my past. I was living in these twenty-dollar motels and just trying to survive. But when I came to New York at 24, I could really for the first time ever see who I'd been, how I'd been and why everything had happened. I was alone for the first time ever. I could finally see how I had managed to get into so many problems. A lot of it was my fault and instigated by me. Being in a brand-new place and being completely alone kind of gave me this perspective. It's almost like I had been in a painting and everyone had sort of been looking at me. I was finally looking at the painting, at what I was. It was horrible and awful, and somehow I couldn't look away. Even if a painting or photograph shows you something awful, if there's something truly beautiful about it under the layers of madness, you find yourself compelled to look. That's kind of how I began to write the album, because I could finally see separately from everything else. AC: That’s funny, because most people lose their minds when moving to New York. NK: I feel like New York freed me. L.A. is a very sedating environment, and I feel like I was trying to subdue who I really am. In London, its even more madness, so I was being more extreme, but I was not conscious of it. When I came to New York, I felt finally everyone else is just as fucked up as I am. They’re doing fucked up things from five in the afternoon to five in the morning and all over again, and it never, ever stops. Finally, I can really be me and publicly as well. I can do it openly and say things openly, and it's not shocking or offensive or anything, because everyone else just did it 15 minutes ago. That's incredible to me: to be able to be the most transparent and honest version of myself in real life. For the first time ever, how I am and who I am didn't need a big censor logo on it. And that's why being in New York was really important for me to write this album. I threw myself in it. I barely remember writing my album, and that means it's been a fucking fun year. AC: Your debut LP, Perfectionist, was pretty revealing, but Trouble is on another level. The lyrics are so personal, so specific to your not-soconventional upbringing. You have a sort of riches-to-rags story. > 58

NK: I used to go to school, and kids would be like, "What does your dad do for a living?" I'd be like, "He smokes cigars and has suitcases of money. He has friends that have gold teeth. He goes to Jamaica. That's what he does." I suppose I grew up a little different. I went to private school where girls would come up to me and be like, "My daddy says your daddy is a criminal!" AC: As illustrated in the “Saturday Night” video, your father was behind bars for some time. The lyric “can you hear my heart from the prison bars?” gives me goose bumps every single time I play the song. NK: I used to write letters and poems to my dad when he was in jail. That's where I first saw true love: how my mother really stood by his side. All of the women who would visit were just desperate to hold their man's hands or kiss them. It doesn't matter what class or race or age they were. There were older couples where obviously the man had been in and out of jail his whole life, and the woman was just there, still waiting. Dedication, loyalty: Those are my morals. I don't give a shit if God or society or the law or morality says if it's right or wrong. If you do something out of true love and good intentions, then that's all I care about. AC: On a lighter note, you’re a heartbreaker. You turn gays straight. You flirt with cops. What’s the most romantic thing a boy has done for you? NK: The most romantic thing a boy has done for me is when someone had done me wrong and owed me. He went over to their house on a motorbike with some sunglasses and a knife. He banged on the door and got my money for me. I don't need flowers, I don't need diamonds, but if you will go and threaten someone's life who did something wrong to me, we can go on a date. AC: God, I love you. So, what's the nicest thing you’ve done for a boy? NK: Leave them before ruining them. AC: I have no idea what else to ask you. NK: The problem is, you know all of the answers. Let’s go shopping.

“I’m so fucking old!" Nicola Formichetti says in his unique British- and Japanese-inflected accent. His voice is a low tenor, smooth, with a steady cadence. Scruffy and sun-kissed, Formichetti certainly doesn't look old. His closely cropped hair accentuates his widow’s peak, which he leaves untouched. He wears his signature uniform well, or at least very matterof-factly: a fitted cap from his line, NicoPanda, a comfortable black tee from Diesel, Phillip Lim shorts and Lanvin sandals. “If I wasn’t traveling so much, I would look younger, but it’s good. It’s my choice." We’re sitting in a conference room inside Hotel Savoia in the beautiful Italian seaside city of Trieste—just east of Venice on the Austrian border. Castles of the late Viennese royals line the breathtaking coasts alongside jagged rocks, with seafoam green waves gently crashing into them. But Formichetti isn't here to relax. He’s here to judge the International Talent Support, an annual fashion competition in which young talent is flown in from around the globe in hopes of gaining recognition and scholarships from the likes of Diesel and Swarovski, among others. Appropriate, as Formichetti is embarking on the next stage of his career as the artistic director at Diesel—a move that surprised many in the fashion industry when it was announced in WWD. The new gig has him traveling on an almost weekly basis: He just made a trip to Tokyo from New York, then to Venice before making it to Trieste. To keep sane, he tries to take a run every morning, no matter the location, though today he decided he would rather meditate in his room. “I meditate a lot. I do TM, a new technique, the David Lynch one. You should do it. It’s transcending meditation,” he explains. “I mean, everyone is doing it—everyone!—so it must be fabulous!” he says laughing. Meditation might explain how Formichetti stays so focused. He has held many prestigious titles in his lifetime. After working at V Magazine, Formichetti served as creative director at Vogue Japan, Mugler and Uniqlo. However, he may be best known as Lady Gaga’s stylist. “We used to have 10 changes every day,” he recalls smiling. “There was always such a shortage of looks. I’m so proud of my girl Gaga. She’s done so much!” Proud though he is, he won't be working with her on her latest release, Artpop. Why the split? “We all need to move on,” Formichetti says. “I’ve done two years with her, and The Fame Monster, the whole New York thing. We introduced her to fashion. We did everything from Fame Monster to Born This Way. It’s a huge job you have to do: the imagery, the tours, the videos, everything. It’s a fucking nightmare. [I did it] because it was pure love and we were having so much fun. But I didn’t know then how much work it was! Now I know.” Formichetti has since passed the sartorial baton over to his assistant, Brandon Maxwell. “To him, I’m, like, ‘Oh, Brandon, it’s going to be great! Not too bad!’” he says laughing. “Of course, Brandon’s been working with her for so long, and he’s going to do the most amazing thing, I know!" But will he miss working with Gaga? “She’s a very talented girl, but I have to focus on myself. I have a huge job at Diesel, and we’re going to be collaborating with her all the time through what I do.” He's taking his role at Diesel extremely seriously. After his exit at Mugler last year, Formichetti says he wanted to go somewhere that was the perfect fit.

“The clothes are going to be so hot!" Formichetti exclaims. “And it’s going to be affordable. I’m doing the whole thing. I’m really designing the entire collection. The bags are going to be hot, the jewelry, everything. I’m starting new. I’m rebooting it.” Seems like Formichetti also has it all together in his professional life. He has come a long way from his time as a club kid in London. “When I was 24 or 25, I was always clubbing and doing crazy stuff. I needed a job, because I had no rent money,” he recalls laughing. He always knew what that job would be. At a young age, Formichetti says he knew he loved fashion—a fascination imparted to him by his Japanese mother. “She was fabulous. She introduced me to Italian Vogue, and I saw fashion through her eyes. She was very Italian since she married my Italian father. She loved Versace,” he says. Formichetti spent his childhood years growing up in both Italy and Japan, then to London, moving around the world every few years, which he says was an essential learning experience for him. “I had to fit in a lot of places being half-Asian and half-Italian and traveling around the world,” he says. “I learned to listen and be nice to people. It’s the best recipe, and it feels so much nicer. I just don’t like the negativity.” The biggest lesson he has learned: “The key to success is to never be bitchy. That time of being horrible to people or being really snobby—all that stuff is so ’80s. People think you have to be like that in fashion. But the key to success is to always listen and be honest and nice to people.” "Not that I'm successful yet. I’m halfway there. Another tip for success: Never be satisfied. I’ve only done it because of the support of my friends. I'm super, super grateful! It’s never a one-man show, never. Actually, I’m an imbecile. I can’t do anything alone," he says. These days, Formichetti lives in Tribeca with his longtime boyfriend and pomeranians Tank and Bambie. The two spend time at home, biking to Williamsburg with the CitiBike system (“Though that uphill on the bridge is tough!) and enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. Sounds pretty domestic. Is he ready to tie the knot? “Uh, no. ... I’m married to fashion. I cannot!” No plans to settle down? “None. I want to have more dogs for sure. Another 10 dogs. I wanna be like Valentino. But I don’t want to settle down. I think I have another 10 to 15 years. People aren’t gonna get rid of me yet! I have too much to do. I just have to do it.” But why? “Because I love it so much,” he says, his smile widening. “So fucking much.”

“I was never satisfied there because we did so much,” he says. “We had a great start with [model] Rico [Genest, aka Zombie Boy, who fronts the brand’s campaigns] and Gaga. ... We had great momentum, and I wanted to do 10 times more the next season and 100 times more the next season." But that wasn’t possible, Formichetti says. “I didn’t have the support. I kept fighting and fighting. I wasn’t satisfied with the clothes, the images. It reflected poorly on me. We didn’t have a budget to make a great product. I was like, 'Agh!'" Eventually, remaining at Mugler no longer seemed worth risking his reputation. "They don’t pay enough for my image to go down," Formichetti says. "It’s harsh to say, but it’s the truth. Good luck to them. You know, they were crazy enough to hire me in the first place. They were crazy enough to hire a stylist—a crazy stylist—to do this.” Some people might say the same about Diesel. At first, Formichetti was skeptical about working with such a mainstream brand. “If a couple of years ago someone was like, ‘You wanna work for Diesel?’ I’d be like, "Fuck you. Over my dead body.'" Because he hates blue jeans? “Because I was into high fashion. I was always into high fashion. For me, [Diesel] was too street-y.” A meeting with Renzo Rosso, the president of OTB (the holding group of Margiela, Marni, Viktor and Rolf, DSquared2 and more), changed his perspective. Rosso had been courting Formichetti for years—long before he went over to Mugler. “I remember seeing his work for Gaga, and I was like, "I have to have a meeting with him!” Rosso says. “I wanted someone as crazy as me, and Nicola was that guy.” For years, Formichetti politely declined. He was too busy with Gaga, doing what he loved to do, which was more theater and something more outré. But after Mugler, Formichetti began reflecting on ways to make his work more accessible. Diesel seemed like a great way to do that. Renzo says, “He visited me one day in my office, and, when he saw the archive of Diesel’s 35 years of history, he was like, ‘Renzo, I want to design a line for you. I want to stop at Mugler.' I was like, 'O.K.' I didn’t push him, because I wanted him to come ... but when he said that, I was like, 'Wow, let’s go!” Formichetti says the timing felt right for him. “Renzo completely trusts me. He’s injecting me with his DNA, and that’s what I need.” Formichetti is launching his first capsule collection for Diesel for men's wear and women's wear. His enthusiasm for it is immediately apparent.

“I remember when the kids were 13, and this taxi literally went right by us to pick up a white dad and his t wo kids.” “Here’s the thing: I couldn’t embrace it. I couldn’t embrace the award.” Lee Daniels is sitting on the sofa in his room at the Waldorf Astoria, wearing cut-off sweatpant shorts and a clean button-down Oxford shirt. He is talking about being honored recently by his high school alma mater, Radnor High School, in Radnor Township, Pa. As the only black student there, he was relentlessly bullied and tormented. His mother made the decision to send him to Radnor after watching her two oldest sons disappear into a life of drug use on the streets of Philadelphia. She was determined to not let Lee succumb to the same fate. And it worked, to her credit—albeit at the expense of his adolescent self esteem. “It was really a nightmare,” Daniels recalls of his high school experience. His eyes gleam with an almost dazzling anger. “I didn’t even go to the bathroom. I had to hold myself in, because I was too terrified of what might happen to me in the bathroom.” The award is the school’s highest, the Hall of Fame. Daniels, who has directed and produced a string of critically acclaimed films, including his latest, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, is an inarguably well-deserving recipient. Yet when he arrived at the school for the award ceremony all these years later, Daniels, now 53, says the school’s white security guard refused to even acknowledge his presence. “It brought it back full circle, and I didn’t even want to go inside, because I kept thinking as I walked in that hallway, ‘Nigger nigger nigger. Faggot, faggot, faggot.’ I’m walking in that hallway, I’m going in the gymnasium—I don’t know what I’m walking into. In the back of my head, I think, is this some sort of sick joke?” It was not a sick joke, and Daniels’s face widens into a large, playful grin as he then describes how all the white people cheered him on when he accepted the award, waving his hands in mock hysteria. Still, he regards the honor with apprehension. Despite the school's inclusion of a handful of black kids, Daniels is not convinced that much has changed. “I kept looking at the little faces of the little black kids and wondering: Are they going through what I went through?” Tears well. He lets out a sharp exhale. “So I try to bring these feelings that I have to the screen—it’s all etched in my head. My life experience is always on screen.” Indeed, at the center of The Butler, a sweeping portrait of the Civil Rights Movement based on the real-life story of a black butler who served in the White House under eight presidential administrations, is a complicated father-son relationship that Daniels understands all too well. As the father of

my son, at 15, said, ‘Dad, why are these people looking at me when I go into stores?’ I didn’t know how to answer.” Compared to raising a black male teenager, making films is easy. Daniels is more surefooted when he’s sitting in the director’s chair than he is when talking race with his son. Never one to play to the crowd, Daniels makes the film equivalent of Jackson Pollock paintings: They splatter and smear onto the screen yet nonetheless have a kind of rigor and precision. His stories are deeply intimate, visually rich and racially nuanced. After producing Monster’s Ball, which earned Halle Berry an Oscar, making her the first black actress to win for best actress, he went on to direct Shadowboxer, starring Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding Jr. Daniels then produced The Woodsman and, after directing Precious (which earned him an Oscar nomination for best director), directed The Paperboy, starring Zac Effron and Nicole Kidman, which was roundly panned by critics. “Julian Schnabel or someone said to me after The Paperboy that if I were European or if I were Pedro [Almodovar] and had done the film, then it would have been hailed.” This makes Daniels a minority within a minority—a black filmmaker whose films look little like other black mainstream filmmakers. “I’m not that guy to be down with the ‘hood, and that kind of cinema doesn’t excite me, at all. And it’s sad, because you’re ostracized by that African-American, Tyler Perry following.” Does he feel ostracized by Perry personally? “No, not by Tyler. Well, who knows? I don’t know. And who cares?” In the past, Daniels has trusted both his son and daughter to watch his film dailies, weigh in on casting choices, scenes and dialog. This film marks the first project his son declined to help with. Daniels was sure his son would be especially critical when he saw it for the first time. “So I asked him, ‘What’d you think?’ And he said, ‘Well, I have a problem with some of the archival footage that you chose, because I’ve seen it before. But I think that the movie, I think it’s your greatest work.’” You can practically see Daniels’ heart swell from inside his chest.

two teenagers (twins, a boy and a girl), Daniels has found it not only difficult to explain race and racism to his kids, but increasingly hard to find common ground with his son. “He and I are disconnecting. I understood what the butler was going through with his son—a lot of those words in there are words that I have with my own son,” Daniels says, referring to the fiercely heated arguments between the butler (Forest Whitaker) and his activist son (David Oyelowo) throughout the film. “It’s a universal story. He’s bucking me. It’s part of growing up and becoming a man.” Stakes get a little higher when it means growing up and becoming a black man. “I remember when the kids were 13, and this taxi literally went right by us to pick up a white dad and his two kids. Like from here to there.” Daniels draws a short line in the air between us. “I couldn’t deal with the uncomfortableness that it made me have with my kids. It’s like having that sex conversation—it’s worse than having that sex conversation.” In fact, the sex conversation with Daniels’ kids, whom he is raising with his ex-partner, casting director Billy Hopkins, is a nonissue. “My kids are so evolved. They’ve got two dads, so the concept of sex and their idea of parenting. ... They’re a new breed. They don’t get it that you don’t get it. And fuck you if you don’t get it. I mean, it goes there.” Sadly, it also ends there. “I assume the world is like that now, until I can’t get a frickin’ taxi.” The main point of contention between Cecil Gaines, the title character in The Butler, and his son, Louis, is Cecil’s passivity. It’s Cecil’s firm opinion that he should have exactly no opinions when it comes to racial politics— or, indeed, any politics. His job is to be entirely subservient and stay quiet. To say nothing at all. His son, on the other hand, believes it is a crucial time for black Americans to make their voices heard—loudly. This drama makes an interesting personal backdrop for Daniels, who argues regularly with his son over how to navigate the world as a young black man. “There’s always a reason why I’m doing a film. Why did I want to do The Butler? I kept asking myself, and I realized that it was because

I was surprised to hear that for years you allegedly tried to hide money in order to avoid paying taxes on it. You’re normally so outgoing! You two specialize in flamboyant, unapologetic, no-holds-barred chic, with everything out of the closet and fit for celebrity consumption. And suddenly you’re keeping stuff behind closed doors? This is so not you. You were recently sentenced for selling your brand in 2004 to a holding company based in Luxembourg. Reportedly, that allowed you to avoid paying taxes on approximately 1 billion euros of royalties. That sounds like the world’s biggest game of hide the salami! The judge wasn’t dazzled by your flashy eyewear and your sparkling record of creating haute couture for the cognoscenti and their entourages. He served a suspended sentence of a year and eight months, and, though it’s unlikely that you’ll actually serve time (the appeal process is long and complicated), the statement was made loud and clear: Even designers have to pay taxes! You’ve always denied having done this, but I’ve always wanted a few more details about your innocence. We kept waiting to hear just why you transferred everything to this tax-free Luxembourg company, which prosecutors claim didn’t have anything to do with the management of your brand—it was basically a shield to throw everyone off the scent of moolah. I was hoping you wouldn’t come off like Martha Stewart when she insisted on chopping a salad on TV without addressing her then-raging insider trading problem. I thought, the salad can wait, guys. Start addressing the other green stuff! And then you did. Your lawyers said the amount in question is wildly incorrect, the statue of limitations is up on this whole jig anyway, plus you’re completely innocent. Oh, prego! In the future, please realize that shuffling funds around might save you a ton of money for a while, but it will catch up with you because it’s, like, totally illegal. The people who do that sort of thing are very often murderers who don’t want to pay off the civil suits they’ve lost to the victims’ families. That's why they bury their dough in some under-attended European country and cry poverty. But you should be better than psychos who hack off innocent people’s heads while hiding their resources. Fashion is supposed to be about style, class, luxury and appearances, and this whole mess makes you look really terrible! It’s not chic! Besides, if you ever do go to jail, it’ll probably be some fashion prison where you might be forced to share a cell with John Galliano, who’ll guzzle fizzy cocktails while railing on about his desperate longing for another holocaust. Can you imagine the horror? You might also be forced to share space with designers who’ve foisted terrible clothes on the world—talk about offensive—and worse, who’ve done mind-numbing reality shows that truly deserve maximum punishment. You can all fluff each other’s hair and try to do runway in your tiny little quarters, but all locked up, without celebrities to give a face to your work, you will surely rot, far from the fabulosity that makes you thrive and ka-ching. And orange is definitely not your color, kids. We love you, D&G. You’ve brought lots of joy to those who can afford it, and you’ve elevated the aesthetic environment of our entire planet by making things sleek, patterned, sexy and eyeball-grabbing. But why did you have to cut corners with your finances? You make a fortune. In fact, your clothes cost so much that most people have to mortgage their house to buy a simple dress. Even after giving the government its share, I’m quite certain you wouldn’t be holding out tin cups on street corners. You’d be fine! So get used to doing that, O.K.? I do it all the time, and it may hurt, but I’ve been told it’s definitely the right thing to do. But wait a second! There was a whole other D&G scandal recently. A male streaker popped up on the catwalk during your last Milan show and caused a frenzy of excitement and speculation. Were you trying to save even more money by trotting out a model with no clothes on? Was his outfit hiding somewhere in Luxembourg? Just kidding. I’m convinced that you had nothing to do with that naked personage. You only advocate showing some flesh, not all. But please reveal all your revenue from now on, O.K.? Think of it as the ultimate fashion show.

Describing a visit to Betsey Johnson’s apartment as quirky and action-packed is an understatement. Johnson opens the door to her Upper East Side home by announcing, “This is my junior suite. I’m done with large homes. I’d rather travel these days.” She pops open a bottle of Moët & Chandon. “Surely it must be five o’clock somewhere,” she reasons with a wink. It was 2 p.m., but close enough. Her glass dining table is decked with grapes, cheese, nuts and olives. Johnson knocks over her glass of bubbly, soaking a skirt. “This is good Champagne; it will dry beautifully,” she promises, reaching for cheery Anne Taintor napkins. Champagne still in hand, Johnson says, “My daughter and I are like Siamese twins.” Lulu Johnson lives on the fifth floor of the same building. “Her father and I split three weeks after she was born. So it was always me and Lulu.” Their close relationship was documented on the Style Network reality show XOX Betsey Johnson, which ran for eight episodes. “It was a hard, easy, fun, wonderful, exciting thing to be doing. As Lulu and I were going through our major trips:

me bankruptcy, Lulu divorce. There were fun problems, too, you know, living in the same building, crashing. We were really glad to do it.” There were glimpses of her mostly white lacquered, sparely decorated apartment on the show—a design aesthetic much different than her more wild and wacky homes in Mexico and East Hampton. “As soon as the grandchildren were born [Ella, now 5, and Layla, 7], I had to change my decorating style from over the top to minimal.” “I love East Hampton,” Johnson says. She describes her house there as “an old, classic, barn-style structure. I bought it as a present to myself, because I was clear of breast cancer. I was clear in January, so I said, ‘Lulu, what do you want to do?!’ And she said, 'Let's buy a house in the Hamptons!’” Buying wasn’t always something Johnson would have considered. She recalls, “I was out with Warhol and the Velvet Underground in the ’60s. We were treated like freaks, and the Hamptons was very snob rich [then]. Now it's a completely different place.”

“If I do clut ter [in Manhat tan], which I love, It’s here." East Hampton is a place where she can house her “clutter.” Or at least some of it. “If I do clutter [in Manhattan], which I love, it’s here,” she explains, gesturing to the white polyflor table of her eat-in-kitchen. “This is the place and the only place.” The area is covered with tchotchkes as she calls them: a Santa Claus dressed in pink, a porcelain jewelry box with things like a delicate vintage bracelet and one made of brightly colored Barbie doll shoes, and a small photo of her daughter. Nearby, the TV set is on TMC with a black-andwhite film of Bette Davis—Johnson’s favorite— playing. “I put my makeup on to my TMC [The Movie Channel]. Like a true New Yorker, Johnson confesses, “I don’t cook. I don’t shop. I treat myself out to dinner every night.” She loves the branzino from Vico on Madison Avenue. Much like the episode of Sex and the City, where Carrie Bradshaw explains that she uses her oven for sweater storage, Johnson shows off her own oven, in which she stores piles of makeup. And the pots and pans? Those are crammed in the dishwasher, which stopped working after two uses. Johnson’s bedroom is predominantly white. Her bedding is by Donna Karan Home in a silk ivory with eight large pillows. She throws them all off and pulls the cover off too, to show the one pillow she actually sleeps on. It is the same size as a baby’s pillow. The bathroom has the most fabulous items in her apartment, she explains. Like a Toto toilet with a seat that lifts automatically with the wave of a hand. A space-age chandelier. She actually has four chandeliers in her apartment—vintage ones that she found on eBay. This is nothing compared to her house in Mexico with 34 chandeliers. “I went nuts in Mexico. I was single. I had a cowboy boyfriend down there. I didn’t pay a fortune for anything.” The walls of the apartment are covered in art—some framed drawings by her grandchildren near paintings of three beautiful women from different eras. She calls them “the three sisters.” Above her couch is a large photograph of herself and Lulu. Despite being a fashion designer, she is not drawn to labels. Most of what she wears is vintage or T-shirt dresses, with the exception of Lanvin. She collects Lanvin dolls and bought a Lanvin piece in a children’s size. “I don’t talk to my dolls,” she claims. Does Johnson entertain in her small, jewel-box space? “One-on-one. Men. Boys,” she quips with her trademark ear-to-ear grin.

“I had to change my decorating style from over the top to minimal.”

THE TRIBECA DISTINCTION A loft in Tribeca is second to none. The neighborhood has a distinctive feel from its cobblestone streets and expansive lofts. Unlike its northern and commercialized neighbor, Soho, Tribeca has maintained itself as a one-of-a-kind luxurious residential neighborhood. “First and foremost, you won’t find a lot of cookie-cutter apartments in Tribeca,” Jeffrey Fields, a broker at Rutenberg Realty, said. “I think that’s one of the main differences between a Tribeca loft and a classic prewar layout on the Upper East Side. They are complete opposites.” “Tribeca apartments and lofts are larger than typical New York residences and have higher ceilings, more open layouts and larger windows,” Richard Cantor, principal of Cantor & Percorella, the exclusive sales and marketing team behind Franklin Place, said. “Internal spaces tend to flow, rather than be cut up into many discrete rooms, so they feel less boxy than traditional apartments. Large, open kitchens and oversize master baths also define Tribeca style, finished in natural materials like wood and honed stone.” Cantor further distinguished Tribeca from the Upper East Side, noting that the downtown apartments are typically less glitzy than

TRIBECA: A HISTORY The Triangle Below Canal Street, eloquently shortened to Tribeca, has risen as one of the most expensive and sought-after neighborhoods in New York over the last 20 years. Bound by Canal Street to the north, West Street to the west, Broadway to the east and Vesey Street to the south, the neighborhood has a deep and rich industrial and artistic neighborhood. In the mid-19th century, Tribeca transformed itself into a commercial center with large open lofts running along Broadway. The developers also consulted with 92Y to establish the children’s residential playroom. Amenities are similar in 250 West Street, which also added an indoor pool and 5,000-square-foot common roof terrace to the roster of amenities. “The building [at 250 West Street] was originally a warehouse and has been converted into 106 residences featuring meticulously appointed finishes, up to 13-foot ceiling heights and large windows overlooking the water,” Sax said. 250 West Street offers a greater diversity of condominium options from studios to two-bedrooms to four-bedrooms. She says he is loud and obnoxious (he is a bit of a frat boy but also very sweet and sensitive). It is my boyfriend's 35th birthday, and I want to throw him a chic dinner at The Lion, but I am nervous that my best friend will show up and roll her eyes every time he opens his mouth. What do I do? Help! Dear Lady Lioness Although our loved ones typically have our best interest at heart, every person needs different things in a partner. In this case, your friend prefers a mellower fellow than your roaring Lion. I suggest you ask your friend to lunch and let her know how much you appreciate her well-intentioned concern. Request that she give Kevin the opportunity to move from the Dog House to the Lion’s Den and get to know him before she jumps so quickly to your defense. If she still meets you with resistance, proceed with the birthday party and develop a thicker skin. After all, the Lioness does all of the hunting for the pride.

Dear Annelise, I've been dating a guy for nine months. We are going on our first vacation together to London. We are staying at my favorite hotel, Claridge’s. I am very particular and neat when it comes to the bathroom, closet and everywhere else. My boyfriend is a bit of a slob. His loft would be a disaster if his maid didn't pick up all the clothes and stuff he chucks on the floor. Any advice on sharing a hotel suite with a sloppy Joe? I suggest you use the British Army adage otherwise known as the Seven Ps: Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Call ahead to Claridge’s, and convey your concerns about your messy man. Request thrice-daily maid service, and tip the hotel staff accordingly. If things get really rough, shower at the spa. Save the complaining for a time other than your first romantic rendezvous. After all, you do aspire for a rendezvous part deux, don’t you? Complaining now may cost you more than the extra pounds that you tip Claridge's for keeping it tidy.
