Glow Worm tours
The Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves are a world-first conservation initiative.
Designed to protect the vulnerable South East Queensland species, our expert tour guides provide visitors with a chance to meet glow worms up close. On a tour within the sanctuary, visitors will experience the wonder of bioluminescence. During the daytime, we learn about how to protect Australia’s “living lights”. Outside the caves, visitors can stop by the native frog exhibit and explore the reforested rainforest. The ecosystem has been re-vegetated with native Tamborine species.
The colony of locally found glow worm species has thrived over the past 15 years. Since the initial establishment in 2005, the worms have been cared for by a dedicated team of scientists. Tour guides also play an important role in the conservation of the glow worms. Their combined efforts have been significant in achieving the growth in numbers of species we see in the sanctuary today.
Wild populations of the worms have suffered substantial decline over the past 2 decades. The loss of habitat and an increasing pressure from tourists have been the main impacts. As a result, reforestation efforts and public education have become the main focus of the project. The tours are informative and foster a greater appreciation for Tamborine’s unique biodiversity. As an ECO certified activity, tours support the ongoing survival of the colony. Research and replanting projects around the subtropical rainforest play an important role too.
Tours run every day from 10am and are located at Cedar Creek Estate on top of Tamborine Mountain. Book online to experience this unique tour that the whole family can enjoy. The tour is suitable for people of all ages.
