John Williamson

Old Man Emu – Now available for the kids!

When we speak about great Australians and those who embody the Aussie spirit, it is guaranteed that this particular gentleman will feature in the conversation. Known affectionately as ‘Mallee Boy’, John Williamson, for over 50 years, has warmed the heart of Australia with his music, telling the tales of the Australian bush and its characters as only he can.

Aussie through and through, John gracefully dismisses the compliments and praise. From Sydney to Perth, Byron Bay to Broome, John Williamson has seen more of this great arid land than most. For decades, this bush poet has enlivened the spirits of those who call this remarkable continent home in sold-out venues far and wide.

This year is the 50th Anniversary of the release of John’s first song ‘Old Man Emu’; the debut hit which made John a household name. First performed in a pub in Moree, the hilarious story of Old Man Emu has become part of Australian culture and is now available as a hardback picture book to the next generation of young Aussies. In collaboration with Simon “Sketch” McLean, the story of Old Man Emu has come to life within the pages of a beautifully illustrated children’s book and is a must have for the family.

John and Simon have become great mates after John’s chance discovery of Simon’s art in a hotel in Bunbury, WA. Coincidentally, John discovered that Simon lived on the Gold Coast, not far from John’s own property in the hinterland. Some years later, John commissioned Simon to do the cover artwork for his 50th album, ‘Honest People’. At their first meeting they instantly connected. Fast forward ten years and it was a late night, light-bulb moment that it was decided Simon would be perfect to illustrate ‘Old Man Emu’. Simon Mclean, world renowned for more than twenty years, has produced Illustration and art for a myriad of advertising and publishing companies across the globe. Famous for his intricately detailed, full-colour cartoon poster artworks and his diverse and often quirky style, Simon’s great sense of humour and personal insights into John have resulted in a picture book that has something for young and old alike. Old Man Emu, the children’s book, is a culmination of great poetry and great art and a story every child should know by heart. Instead of celebrating his 50th year in the industry with his massive ‘Winding Back’ tour, 2020 has been a year of great disruption but has allowed John time to reflect on the past five decades and pursue other creative activities on his farm at Springbrook. ‘After fifty years, I am truly grateful that Aussies of all ages are still coming to my concerts and listening to my songs. We share a love for our amazing ancient land. It’s hard to believe that ‘Old Man Emu’ is fifty!’ Never one to sit idle, the time off the road this year has given John a chance to produce some new music. As usual, John’s view of the world creates insight into our plights as only John Williamson can. The magical timber of his voice delivering yet another Aussie classic.
