GET theLOOK Ken Norman, owner and designer of Floral Inspirations in Lewes, tells us how to recreate the door decor shown on the cover and make your home the merriest on the block.

“Nearly every inspiration starts with color, but that doesn’t mean I eschew natural, organic elements in my designs; in fact, I embrace them! Layer in the perfect pairing of textures and all of the components come together in a welcoming, wintry entrance experience. The coastal-style architecture seen in every Schell Brothers home is actually a perfect complement to holiday decor, and matched with the owner’s personal style, can create that coveted festive feel.”

TEXTURE Magnolia and cedar are hand-woven to create a garland with wonderfully contrasting textures. I particularly love how the shiny, broad magnolia leaves pair with the more muted tones of their soft, suede backsides.

COLOR The cedar gives it that pop of seasonal green, while accents of ribbon, mercury and glittered orbs add the perfect touch of sophisticated holiday magic.

Resident designer Matty Adler tells us what can make or break the design of your home - and how you can make it your own.

DO: Revel in your favorite pieces. DON’T: Inundate your space with them. One of my favorite sayings is, “when everything is special, then nothing is special anymore,” and this couldn’t be more appropriate when creating balance in a room. When the options seem overwhelming, whittle your choices down by selecting a few unique pieces that you want to highlight and let them be the stars of the show. Take your kitchen selections for example: if you choose a busy countertop, balance the busyness with a simpler backsplash. In love with a bold and funky rug? Don’t compete with it by choosing loud wallpaper. Balance is key.

“THE BEST

PART ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN IS THAT IT’S COMPLETELY FLUID.” 8 | at home with Schell Brothers

DO: Pick products you’ve been dreaming of. DON’T: Forget about how you really live.

unattainable, it’s actually as simple as picking one or two design items to repeat throughout your home. Repeating colors or patterns is the perfect way to carry design themes from room to room. I recently designed a home where I weaved scallop shapes throughout, featuring them in tile, furniture, lighting and trim work. It’s a small element, but it ties the entire home design together perfectly.

DO: Create a space you love. DON’T: Feel like you have to fill up your home all at once. Perhaps my favorite thing about my own home is that it’s filled with items that have caught my eye over the years, whether at the local HomeGoods or on my travels around the world. Walking through my home is like a trip down memory lane, and that’s what makes it truly special. And when you spot something you love – be flexible! Don’t dismiss an item right away because you can’t immediately think of a perfect spot for it. The best part about interior design is that it’s completely fluid. Swap items around over time, bring in a new find to inject life into a space that’s become dull, and embrace your ever-evolving taste.

THE PURSUIT OF

LIFE AT INDEPENDENCE WITH ALVIN & HARRIETT A true love story is one that inspires. It warms the soul, and can also travel far beyond two people. The love story of Alvin and Harriett not only encompasses their love for one another, but also their genuine love for the life they live, and where they live. For these two, it’s also a story about friends and neighbors, life at Independence, and always choosing happiness.

Brown Paper

PACKAGES... Tied up with string! These are a few of our favorite...ways to dress up the holidays with fun and inventive gift wrapping ideas. That’s right; this holiday season, we challenge you to think outside the box – quite literally. Dress up this year’s giving season with inspired packaging that will make your gifts look so good, your loved ones won’t even want to open them.

STAPLE ITEMS TO KEEP ON HAND Rolls of brown Kraft paper. This material is inexpensive, durable, and 100% recyclable and biodegradable. Pre-made Kraft paper boxes. These are available in multiple sizes and shapes (also in black for a more modern, sophisticated look) and can be purchased from your local craft supply store. Pretty ribbon, string and twine - the more, the merrier! Ornaments! Christmas tree ornaments are the perfect finishing touch to the pretty bows and ribbons atop your packages. DRESS IT UP Wrapping doesn’t have to be expensive, just unique! Repurposing items is an affordable way to dress up any gift. Keep an eye out for vintage novelties on your next antiquing trip. Tiny Santas, reindeer and snowmen are adorable additions, along with vintage light bulbs or ornaments. Shop your local craft store for dollhouse selections like wire brush trees and wreaths. Florals, twigs, berries, faux birds, pine cones and cinnamon sticks are also festive and fun. ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH Dress up gift tags by using vintage cards and cut outs from old Christmas cards or postcards. We used collectible cards that came in boxes of baking soda in the early 1900’s. Old photos can also turn a simple tag into a timeless keepsake.

16 | at home with Schell Brothers

PRO TIPS Stock up on festive items that go on clearance after the holidays at your favorite craft store. Use wired ribbon for a more structured bow. Give your packages the feeling of a simpler time, by using butcher string/ twine, red and white baker's twine, ric rac ribbon and jute.

New Year, new flavors! We’ve teamed up with Lion and Meg Gardner from Blue Moon in Rehoboth to bring you some crowd-pleasing recipes that will have you ringing in the new year JUST right.

We make almost everything from scratch at our restaurant, but you don’t have to make your own smoked salmon, crème fraiche or brioche dough to enjoy these recipes in the comfort of your own home. In fact, it would add hours to your prep time and possibly cut into the time you could spend enjoying your own party. You can (and should!) buy most of those ingredients at the store. It will make preparing for your party much easier and the party itself all the more fun! But if you really want to get adventurous, then by all means, search out a recipe and go to town!” -Lion Gardner

In a mixing bowl, combine the crab meat with just enough mayo to coat the meat, taking care not to break up all the large lumps. Add a bit of Old Bay to taste, and more mayo if necessary. 4. Slice the brioche rolls along the top and fill each with a bit of the crab salad mixture. Sprinkle with a fresh herb like chives or parsley and a bit more Old Bay to serve.

PICKLED BEET & GOAT CHEESE TARTS · Pie dough · Pickled beets (red & yellow), diced small · Goat cheese · Pumpkin seeds 1. Using a cutter or some other guide, punch out dough rounds that fit into a mini muffin pan with roughly a ½ inch tall side. Bake these for 10 minutes at 350° or until they are browned and cooked. 2. Allow the tart shells to cool and then fill each with a bit of goat cheese. Top with a mixture of each color pickled beet and pumpkin seeds, plus any other garnish you choose. I like dill sometimes; it goes nicely with vinegary beets. But have fun finding your favorites!

CLUB

IN GOOD COMPANY When you stumble upon a community where the lines between vacation life and everyday life are blurred, you know you’ve found something special. Take a drive through Delaware’s Community of the Year, Coastal Club, and you’ll find just that. It’s vacation every day seemingly, with a grand clubhouse and a pool that boasts a water slide, swim-up bar, and splash zone. All the makings of a 5-star resort, right in your backyard. It doesn’t end there though, there’s a nature trail, a dog park, tennis and pickle ball courts, and a fitness center. Toto, are we in Kansas anymore? Nope, we’re at Coastal Club in Lewes, and here, there really is no place like home.

It comes as no surprise that coastal is the pervasive theme throughout this resort-style, awardwinning community. For starters, there’s the iconic lighthouse and emblematic anchor at the gated entrance. The nautical theme carries strong throughout the entirety of the community, from the thematic pilings and rope, to the interior selections in the clubhouse. Think Aegean blue cabinetry and clear conical pendants above the bar, artfully adorned with cords wrapped in rope. But it’s not only the nautical finishes that give a nod to coastal style. It’s the lifestyle, and what a lifestyle indeed. True to form, a typical summer day at Coastal Club starts and ends with complete relaxation. Stroll the 3.1 mile walking trail before hopping

For current Coastal Club Community Sales Managers Joe Wobeter and Alli Perry, work life has quickly become synonymous with family life. “I've always felt welcomed by the Coastal Club family. The sense of community is truly special,” says Joe. “We talk a lot about what a cool place it is to live,” concludes Alli, “but at the end of the day, this really is a diverse group of people who want to enjoy life. BRYN & PATRICK Coastal Club is an amazing community. The amenities are beautiful; it's like being at a luxury resort except you know everyone! The residents in Coastal Club are fun and social and we were welcomed so warmly when we moved in. While there are a few builders to choose from, we chose Schell Brothers based on their commitment to quality and home efficiency. Our construction manager was amazing; we had a superb building experience with Schell and look forward to our happily ever after here.

STEVE & MARYANNE We fell in love with Lewes on our first visit. The location of Coastal Club is a huge plus. Cape Henlopen State Park is a treasure and we are biking or at the beach at least twice a week. Furthermore, the quality of the Schell homes and the way they stand behind their work has been a stress buster. We love our Cassidy. The open floor plan and the natural light continue to please us. Our courtyard is beautiful. We keep saying we should have done this sooner; but if we had, we would not be in the community we are in, so things definitely happen for a reason.

TOM & LAURA We love Coastal Club! It’s like living at a high-end resort! The pool and clubhouse are great places to gather and form new friendships. Moving here was the best decision we’ve ever made!

NICK & LOURDES No other subdivision, at least to our knowledge, has a ring road servicing the different communities. This provides individuality and ease of ingress and egress. The clubhouse, pools and facilities are top-notch. Food and beverages are good quality and reasonably priced. Our neighbors and everyone we meet are so friendly and genuinely nice people. We’ve made more friends here in 6 months than we’ve made in 30 years at our old home.

Q&A WITH SUSAN

How do you choose a color pa let te when desig n i ng a n enti r e home? I usually f ind something I love f irst. A lot of times it’s a fabric; with this model specif ically it was the dining room rug.

W hat’s a su r pr isi ng way to add color? Def initely with metals, like copper accents. Surprisingly you can add color with metal and it results in the perfect balance of sophistication and fun.

What’s your biggest decorating “don’t”? What should people skip? Over accessorizing, and I see it all the time. Less is more!

Is there a difference between designing for a secondary residence versus a primary? Absolutely, and often it is motivated by budget. But there are also lifestyle differences to consider if the family is planning on renting the home out or having frequent out-of-town guests. Practical fabrics and accessories are definitely a top priority in that case. we mentioned earlier, while also t ying

WITH THE RYANS Schell Brothers’ power couple Frank and Karen Ryan are both longtime Schell employees, Frank a seasoned member of the sales team and Karen an integral part of the design team. But away from work, you’ll find Frank and Karen doing what they love most - spending time with family which includes their two boys, Nicholas and Anthony, and their adorable pup, Kona. And at home, it’s all about fun, family shenanigans and quality time together.

THIS IS U S

ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM DELAWARE? Frank: No, I am originally from Long Island, NY. After we started our family in Baltimore, we wanted to raise the kids somewhere close to the water and in an environment that reminded us of our childhoods.

Karen: We vacationed in Delaware a lot because my brother and dad both lived in the area. We finally decided to move here in 2010 and that was the best decision we ever made!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH SCHELL AND HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT THE COMPANY? Karen: I’ve been working with Schell for 7 ½ years. My father was doing some work with Schell and he highly recommended that I look into joining their team. With my dad’s recommendation, there was no doubt in

my mind that this was a great company!

Frank: I had gone to school for education, and then nursing...I had always envisioned myself in a position to help people. I joined Schell a year and half after Karen. Through Schell Brothers I found I can help people with one of the largest decisions most make in their lifetime - finding a place to call home.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY - WHAT DOES A TYPICAL FAMILY DAY OFF TOGETHER LOOK LIKE? Karen: With having opposite work schedules, we don’t have that many days where we are all together; so when we do, we try hard to really spend the day together having fun! Usually this will involve time by the water, whether it’s the pool, beach or out on a boat. We just had a family day yesterday and it was the best! We started the day with brunch at Jimmy’s (the boys love their cinnamon rolls), then headed out to Cape Henlopen for a bike ride, followed by playing football on the beach, a little skimboarding and swimming for the boys.

Frank: We made it back home to watch the rest of the Giants game (they lost; it was sad), showered up and met some friends at Crooked Hammock for dinner and games, then back to the screened-in porch for a few minutes of TV before the boys went to bed. The days we

Karen: With our schedules being pretty chaotic, our date nights tend to be a little more relaxing. We usually start by grabbing a drink or two followed by dinner, before heading back home to hang out and listen to music or watch a movie. We are spoiled by living here because there are so many wonderful restaurants with the best atmosphere and fresh ingredients. I would say our favorites have to be Henlopen City Oyster House, Salt Air, Bluecoast, and for the best pizza, Half Full!

Frank: It’s funny, every night is a date night in my mind. But on those rare nights that we don’t have the boys, a recipe for a date night is not unlike a recipe for a family day - we keep the games, jokes and laughter, but substitute the kids with a couple of cocktails! Whether it’s a night in and I cook while Karen keeps me company with a glass of wine, or a night out at Bluecoast (Karen’s favorite), we love to be reminded that we live at the beach and that this is not just home, but our happy place. Either stay in or go out, date nights always end snuggled up on the screened-in porch which is Karen’s absolute favorite place in our house.
