to give our beach gear a well-earned break and relax in the
warmth of old friendships, family gatherings, and comfort foods.
The beaches empty as farm fields fill with snow geese and canal views seem to go on forever. There is no better season to cherish our lower, slower pace. Yet, when we hunker down inside, a surprise snowfall re-energizes our need to connect with neighbors over a simmering bowl of soup or a toasted cocktail.

WREATHS It’s been said that less is more. While that may be true of architecture, Mies van der Rohe was not referring to holiday decor. This time of year, as Clark Griswold and like-minded people will agree, more is better.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to deck the halls is right at the front door. I like to begin with a color palette and some inspiration from iconic seasonal elements, especially Mother Nature. Here is an unexpected combination inspired by the hues of cinnamon and marshmallow. Sturdy evergreens paired with southern magnolia provide the base of this handcrafted wreath. Accents of frosted pinecones, copper-gilded branches, and faux leaves add seasonal f lair. Dried lotus pods and pheasant feathers enhance the natural and organic theme; thank you, Mother Nature. Rusted jingle bells and bleached ruscus unify the color palette.

If you’re ready to paint your house and aren’t sure where to start, these tips from our resident designer, Matty Adler, will guide you through the process.
DO: Try out colors first. DON’T: Put multiple colors side by side when you are comparing swatches. Most paint companies offer color swatches you can test on a wall, and some even provide more accommodating 8 x 10 samples. Try your paint colors out first but do give each color its own space, making sure the lighting is consistent as you consider each one. You will find that paint colors can look dramatically different depending on the volume and intensity of light in the space.

Sisterhood
LIFE AT GOVERNORS WITH SISTERS ROBERTA, CHRIS AND PENELOPE
When it comes to interior design, every decorator knows that the rule of three is a sure way to create a pleasant, memorable grouping. After meeting three adventurous sisters who were destined to retire together near the beach, we understood this rule better than ever— and came to appreciate it in a new and heartwarming way.

everything. Although it had been in the works for a while, the story really began when Penelope Moreland-Gunn wanted to move out of the busy Washington metropolitan area after retiring from a rewarding 30-year career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). For years, she and sisters Chris Miller and Roberta Moreland had talked about retiring in a community together. While living in different areas of Northern Virginia— Penelope in Falls Church, Chris in South Riding, and Roberta in Leesburg—the three siblings had enjoyed going to the theater, watching movies, and spending the holidays together. With a new retirement destination in mind, they explored a variety of states,

I liked the bike path, the cute historic town, the ocean and bay beaches, and the overall feel of the development. Just like that, I was on my way to Delaware and a new lifestyle.” As soon as Penelope made her decision to buy a home at Governors, Roberta and Chris, along with her husband, Jim, followed close behind. For Jim, the choice was easy. The couple cherished the value of family ties, and Jim viewed the move to Lewes as a gift of love for Chris. When her sisters and other family members visit, the porch is the preferred place to sit, eat, chat, and just be together. Along with these sections of the home, the bonus room is a favorite year-round space for Penelope who was a certified yoga instructor prior to retirement. “This area truly is a bonus because it’s the only room that is just for me,” she explained. “I use it for yoga and meditation.” Also choosing a townhome, Roberta elaborated that her reasons for selecting the Tidewater were focused on the first-floor bedroom suite, the screened-in porch, and the great room. “While I spend most of my time in the great room, the screened-in porch is also a favorite,” Roberta said. “My rabbit, Fiona, feels right at home there, too.” Unlike her sisters, Chris lives in a single-family detached home, still with the benefit of a first-floor primary bedroom suite. In her home, known as the Bluebell, Chris especially likes the

WALDEN
The direction of dreams To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau in his iconic book written from the shores of Walden Pond,
there is something very satisfying about getting away from it all and living the life you’ve imagined.

With a setting that is close to the beach yet tucked away on its own, Walden will deliver a laid-back coastal lifestyle enhanced by a new era of outdoor attractions. Positioned in a scenic Harbeson location with easy access to Lewes, here nature takes center stage. The thoughtfully designed neighborhood is flanked on one side by Burton’s Pond, while a variety of smaller water features are artfully scattered throughout the community, encouraging residents to interact with nature’s treasures. PATTI & RICK “We looked so long for our forever house and Walden was everything we could imagine! Not only did we get to choose all our selections, but Joe and Carole were the best sales representatives we could have asked for! They walked us through the thousands of questions I had—always with a positive attitude—which was so important for us because we were far away from the site. Then we connected with our community and met future neighbors who have become like family. We could not ask for kinder, more helpful people. Even though we’ve not yet broken ground on our home, we already feel like this is the best choice for our retirement.”
DAVID & DEE “We discovered the charm of Walden when Dave’s parents decided to relocate from Florida to Delaware. Dave’s mission was to find a beautiful neighborhood with very high-quality construction in the Delaware beach area with access to back roads that make it easy to travel wherever we need to go. Walden is exactly what he was looking to find for his parents…and then us! Two months after Dave’s parents bought their beautiful home, we selected our dream home, right around the corner. All the neighbors here feel like family. They are all super-friendly and welcoming, just like Joe and Carole!”
THE DICECCOS “We chose Walden because we loved the architecture of the Schell homes and the look of their well-manicured communities. As we went through the process, we were delighted to discover that we chose a multi-generational community with a family feel. My boys love fishing in the local ponds and getting frequent visits from the ice cream truck. We also love how the wonderful sales team plans ongoing events for the members of the community to socialize and get to know each other.”

When the sun goes down before 5 o’clock and there is a frosty chill in the air, we crave the warmth of nestling under a hand-knit blanket by the fireplace. There is no question that the best foods for this time of year are slow cooked. We find unmatched comfort in braised meats and vegetables that are easy to serve directly from the oven into a bowl. The following recipes combine a few easy-to-find ingredients, an enameled Dutch oven or casserole dish, and patience. But the wait is worth it as you create a magical blend of scents and tastes to warm your stomach and delight your taste buds.

When the butter starts to bubble, add onions and sauté for approximately 10 minutes, rolling carefully so they brown as evenly as possible. While the onions cook, make a bouquet by tying the herbs with twine. When the onions are browned, pour in the liquid, season to taste, and add the herb bouquet. Turn down the heat to low and cover. Simmer for 40-50 minutes. The liquid will evaporate but the onions will stay intact. Remove herb bouquet before serving.

SAUTÉED MUSHROOMS INGREDIENTS: 1 pound button mushrooms, wiped clean, stems removed 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS: Sort mushrooms by size. Quarter the larger ones, leaving the small ones whole. In a medium skillet, melt butter and oil over high heat. When the butter foams, add the mushrooms. Turn the mushrooms over to evenly coat. Shake the pan over the heat, cooking mushrooms for 4-5 minutes. Mushrooms will absorb all the fat and then begin to brown. Continue to sauté an additional 4-5 minutes, until lightly browned. Remove from heat and season to taste.

ONION BREAD PUDDING Yields 6 entrée-sized portions or 10 side dishes
INGREDIENTS: 1 baguette, sliced into ½-inch slices 9 tablespoons butter, at room temperature, divided 16 ounces Emmental cheese, grated 8 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 cup tomato puree
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 425˚F. Arrange baguette slices on a baking sheet. Toast in oven until lightly browned, approximately 4 minutes. Remove from oven. Spread toasted baguette slices with butter (about 5 tablespoons). Set aside. Lower oven to 350˚F. In a large saucepan, melt remaining butter over medium heat. Add the onions and season with salt. Sauté, stirring frequently, until golden, approximately 15-20 minutes. Line the bottom of a 5-quart casserole dish with a third of the baguette slices. Top with a quarter of the grated cheese. Spread one-third of the onions on top and then drizzle with a third of the puree. Repeat for 2 more layers. If there are leftover baguettes, place them on top. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Be careful that the casserole is not more than two-thirds full. In a saucepan, combine 1½ quarts of water and salt. Bring to a boil. Slowly and carefully pour the hot salted water into the casserole dish near the edge. Use enough liquid to extend to the top layer of cheese without going over it. Place the casserole on the stove and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Transfer to the oven and bake, uncovered, for 1-1½ hours until a browned crust has formed. Remove from oven. To serve, spoon the baked crust with gooey center into bowls. Present as an entrée with lightly dressed local greens or serve as a starch side dish.

Are you looking for a coastal f loor plan that takes advantage of panoramic views? If so, look no further than the Sanibel.
W
hen we approached resident designer, Susan Herring, about
developing a fresh look for our Sanibel model at Bayside, she had just returned from the High Point Furniture Market held biannually in North Carolina. “I always come home inspired to start a new project with all the amazing things I see at market,” said Susan. Instantly, she knew she would use the Sanibel model to showcase what is arguably America’s hottest design trend: Modern Farmhouse.

In the Sanibel’s inverted layout—often referred to as a reverse f loor plan—the positioning of the secondary bedrooms on the lower level enable us to capitalize on the open ceiling created above the main living areas. Susan married old with new by adorning the dramatic ceiling with a modern f lair that included reimagined farmhouse elements such as white exposed triangular beams and planking in the window dormers. The cathedral ceiling presents an old-world charm with high windows and soaring ceilings that are visually striking while also providing an abundance of natural light. Positioned under a windmill ceiling fan, the expansive great room easily
accommodates the sizable furniture that invites comfort and coziness—all anchored by an area rug that inspired the home’s color palette. Another dramatic feature of the Sanibel is the two-story open stairwell adjacent to the great room. Staying true to the theme, Susan used a black iron railing and matte black light f ixtures to contrast the soft surrounding color palette. “I always design a unique wall treatment for this important space because it is seen from both the f irst and second f loor,” explained Susan. For this model, she incorporated an architectural statement in the form of simple black candle lanterns.

The Sanibel kitchen is easily described in two words: captivating and functional. With a large counter-height bar that comfortably seats six, and a center island conveniently located near all the appliances, this kitchen instantly doubles your dining and entertainment space. If you prefer the “command center” benef its of one large island, there is an option for that, too. To accommodate the busiest chef, this workhorse kitchen features numerous decorative cabinets and storage cupboards as well as a walk-in pantry. Just when we thought white painted cabinets were the only way to achieve a farmhouse appeal, Susan wowed us
with her ability to think outside the box. “I chose a dark gray stain called Gauntlet to add a sense of richness,” she explained. The dark cabinetry paired with rustic wood f loors, a subtle pastel glass backsplash, white modern wainscoting, and black accents create a quintessential farmhouse setting that makes visitors leave with kitchen envy. By adding the square footage for an extended dining room, Susan was able to include a large dining table while incorporating a focal point along the wall that backs to the primary suite. The extended dining room also allows for a deeper covered porch off the great room, providing ample space for an outdoor

doubt that this space will increase the amount of time you and your guests will spend outside, especially if you create a small dining area, as Susan did. This brings us to the dreamy primary suite, nestled just off the dining room. Susan took this incredibly spacious enclave to the next level by adding horizontal planking on the bed wall and

seating alcove. The small round dining table in front of the window seat invites homeowners to enjoy the view while sipping morning coffee or ending the day with a glass of wine.
The primary suite bathroom is just as impressive. Its generous size gave Susan the opportunity to feature a new rustic-patterned f loor tile, along with a complementary gray subway tile on the walls for a modern vibe. The model features an optional freestanding tub, a large shower, two spacious walk-in closets, and a separate water closet. Uniquely designed with a secondary access to the laundry room, the bathroom is also especially convenient for those most likely to be responsible for laundry duties. To accommodate a family’s evolving needs, the f lex room includes a large closet, ideal as a complement to a

bedroom or for organizing off ice supplies in the study as shown in this model. What makes this space even more f lexible is the opportunity to add a full bathroom in lieu of the storage closet. Since the Sanibel includes a dedicated powder room off the foyer, this bathroom off the f lex room transforms the space into a true guest suite. The f irst f loor recreation room is open for personalization and may be used as a second living area or a game room with an optional entertainment wall or wet bar. Having showcased this room as a secondary lounge space in the last two

models, Susan chose the entertainment wall with a mini bar here. “I wanted to do something a little different in this model to show another way to use this space,” explained Susan. Just off the recreation room is a screened patio that provides an alternate outdoor lounge area where you and your guests can enjoy the fresh air without the nuisance of insects. If you need one more reason to fall in love with this f loor plan, it is the only home in our lineup that includes a 3-car front entry garage, offering generous space to store your favorite ride along with kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes— all the essentials for your new beach lifestyle. Even if you opt for the elevator option that occupies a portion of the double garage door bay, you’ll have plenty of room for two vehicles and storage. From high ceilings to out-of-thisworld entertaining spaces, the Sanibel is without a doubt a fan favorite. In life, it’s all about the details that make a day so memorable. We believe the same rules should apply when designing a new f loor plan. We’ve mastered the structural part. Now it’s up to you and the help of our design team to make it your own! Q&A
WITH Y VONNE & CHARLIE Ever wanted to live in a model home? Get the inside scoop from our Sanibel model buyers.
Which boxes did The Sanibel model check for you? All! Charlie and I love the open floor plan with the main living space on the upper level. For us, the important features are bedrooms with private baths and hardwood floors throughout. Having the laundry room off the primary suite is also a big plus.
What are some benefits of buying a model home? The biggest benefit of buying the model home is that all aspects of the decision-making process were done for us. Having the talented design team select every detail resulted in a perfectly coordinated look and feel. We especially like some features we never would have thought to choose, such as the black plumbing fixtures.
Do you have any favorite rooms or spaces in your home? This may sound surprising coming from two retirees, but one of our favorite rooms is the study. I just love the furnishings! They speak to me personally, especially the large painting of the telephone because both my dad and I worked for the telephone company for many years. The kitchen and primary suite are very special to us as well. Three features that sold us on the model home are the pot filler, the window bench, and the double slipper tub.
Anything else you’d like to share about your experience? Charlie and I truly feel that this purchase was one of the best decisions we’ve made in our 40-year marriage, and living in our new home at Bayside gets better each day. We cannot say enough about our purchasing experience with Schell Brothers and the team that made it all so pleasurable—shout out to Natalie, Joni, Jared, Susan and Kathy! Our neighbors are wonderful as well. Bayside truly is a very special place to live!

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WORKED IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY? My father was a construction manager before I was born, and he later retired after 34 years in the field. I was about 10 years old when I started in construction myself with a broom and dust pan. My dad would take me to work with him on the weekends and make me sweep out houses. As I grew up, I learned more and more. I got involved in all kinds of construction work, went to college, and became a construction manager at the age of 22. I’ve never done anything else.

HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT SCHELL BROTHERS? I remember first hearing about Schell Brothers while I worked at another area homebuilder and thought it sounded like a really cool company. A couple years later, a good friend who had been with Schell for about a year told me that this was a different kind of builder and I should come to work here. I’d say he was right.
TELL US ABOUT BUILDING TOWNHOMES AT GOVERNORS. Building the townhomes has been great, and I enjoy the change of pace in moving from single-family to multi-family products. During my entire career I’ve been fortunate enough to go back and forth between townhomes, singlefamily homes, and even apartment buildings. I like the variety.
HOW DOES WORKING AT SCHELL BROTHERS COMPARE WITH OTHER BUILDERS IN YOUR EXPERIENCE? To be honest, working here is harder than at any other builder I ever worked for, but I think that is part of why it’s more rewarding. With the incredible number of options we

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST MOST ABOUT LIVING IN LEWES? We really like the small-town feel that Lewes has while still putting us close to everything we need. Of course, we also enjoy the beach and the Indian River Bay. We love going to the Lewes beach at Roosevelt Inlet in the summer on weeknights when it’s not too crowded. We spend a lot of time on our boat and jet ski in the bay.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SON... Our son Ethan is 5 years old. He started kindergarten this year and is loving every minute of it. Ethan definitely keeps us very busy, with ice skating on Fridays, soccer on Saturdays, and soon he’ll resume swimming at the YMCA. In between all his activities, you won’t find Ethan without his Nintendo Switch.
