s the sun stretches ever higher, it carries our hopes for
an idyllic summer to a new zenith before dipping into
the cotton candy sky. Finally, after all this diligence and
perseverance, we unwrap our prize and are so ready to shine,
like kids unshackled by the last day of school, free to roam with a permanent grin on our newly revealed faces. The cliche is real: what a breath of fresh air!
This brings us home. What we used to cherish as a rejuvenating but rare staycation was dutifully reimagined as a private island refuge to weather an unprecedented storm. Now those menacing clouds are receding, chased away as sunbeams refresh the stratosphere, cracking open the door for us to reemerge and invite other castaways back in. And it feels good.
Now go do something extraordinary.

GET theLOOK Ken Norman, designer and owner of Floral Inspirations in Lewes, explains
how to recreate the cover look at home and transform your entryway into a summer feast for the eyes.
“On the day of this photoshoot, an unusually warm spring breeze blew down the street, taking with it the last fading tulip petal. We were looking forward to the bright and hopeful moments of an idyllic summer. For its relaxed pace, longer days, and warmer weather, summer is my favorite season. I love the bright, vivid, crisp color palette which can be seen in gardens all around town, at local produce stands, and around farmers markets. Even the clothes we wear are lighter and brighter with summer’s juicy hues. I hope you enjoy the bold and vibrant colors of the season evident in this entry décor.”

TURNING ON THE
CHARM When two members of the on-site sales team have decided to build homes in the community, you know it must be a special place. With extraordinary amenities, beautiful homes, and a convenient location east of Coastal Highway, this community is a destination of its own. And, while you might be tempted to think of Governors as a hidden gem, it is actually a shining jewel in the heart of charming Lewes, Delaware.

Conveniently located along Gills Neck Road near downtown Lewes, Governors pairs an idyllic setting with unmatched amenities. Community Sales Manager Adam Pettengell is a self-described walking billboard for the Gills Neck corridor, having lived in the area for the past ten years. Only half joking, he attributes his love for the area to a need to be close to Agave. If you’ve dined at this posh Mexican lounge and tequila bar on 2nd Street in Lewes, you understand what he means.
Fellow sales team member, Amanda Kincaid, is also planning a move to Governors this summer. According to Amanda, the

“I’m a walking billboard for Governors and the Gills Neck Road area. This is the perfect location for people who are socially and physically active. I can come and go as I please, without having to factor in the traffic on Route 1.”
With unparalleled access to resort-driven amenities and beach-oriented benefits that include outdoor sports, restaurants, and shopping, Governors is the perfect home base for an active lifestyle. It’s where you can bike to the beach without getting near a major highway or pedal to dinner in Rehoboth any night of the week. Location, location, location. It’s about more than where a community is situated. It’s where it can take you. As many have discovered, at Governors you’ll enjoy the ride.

“Lewes has always felt like a favorite sweatshirt—it fits us just right. I think we knew it was home when we first came to the area 20 years ago, but life pulled us in slightly different directions. Our return to living in Lewes was about ten years in the making, and so when we were ready, we knew that we were looking for our forever home. Just as important, we wanted a homebuilding experience that reflected that understanding. From the beginning, our interaction with Schell has been the perfect combination of quality, attention to detail, a sense of family, and a little bit of fun. At every point along the way, we truly felt like partners in this process. We’ve both always viewed life as a journey. Our Schell experience has enriched that journey with new friends, a beautiful new home in a fantastic community, a lot of fun, and that feeling of family.”
KAREN
“There’s the obvious: nice homes, amenities, location, and neighbors. And then there’s the unexpected which is shaped by a four-step process beginning from the moment you walk on site through the first year of ownership. Step 1 connects you with the Sales Team and most builders stop there, but not Schell. Step 2 takes you to your awesome design team while Step 3 introduces you to the construction process. My construction manager called me weekly and emailed pictures so I could witness the progress throughout construction. Schell stays with you even after you move in, with Step 4, when you meet an awesome Warranty Team that addresses your questions and needs. And then you get to live here, near biking trails, Cape Henlopen State Park, historic Lewes, Beebe Hospital, schools, farmers markets, and events.”

CHERYL & MELVIN “One of the unexpected treasures has
been our community. It started with Adam and the team planning happy hours (preCOVID) and outdoor events to bring us all together. Because of this, we got to know our neighbors—not only on our street but throughout the neighborhood. There is a sense of family and fun that has developed and it all started with that vision of bringing the community together around shared fun events.”
MARYANN & JONNA
“The two main reasons we selected Governors were to improve our location and decrease our home maintenance. Once we chose our Tradewind townhome, Schell Brothers laid out a very detailed process from start to finish. The sales team, construction manager, and design team worked very closely with us throughout the entire process. We are very pleased with our decision to be part of the Governors community.”
DAVID & SUZANNE
“Governors is a wonderful community, where neighbors are family. From the time we began the process, we knew this place was something special!”

PRO T I P When it comes to DIY, small accessories are a good place to begin. After years of experience in building décor for Anthropologie, creating event displays in Sydney, Australia, and drawing floor plans for a local contractor, this talented Baltimore native has landed happily at the beach. In addition to celebrating the joy and inspiration she’s found here, Liz Ottey shares some tips she learned along the way.
Do: Focus on the things you love. Don’t: Overdo it! As your designer, I want to create a space that is uniquely yours, so it’s important to understand what matters to you. For example, if you love plants, use them as art—but do so sparingly. Don’t overdo it! Too many plants can be junky and make it feel like you’re in a jungle. Unless that’s the look you’re going for, all you need are a few touches of greenery here and there. Another plant/art tip: just because a wall or space is empty, that doesn’t mean you need to fill it up. For me, less is more. Subtle hints of nature are just what you need to warm up a space, especially at the beach.
Do: Buy new pieces. Don’t: Get rid of all your old stuff. New furniture or accessories can be the perfect way to add a focal point to the room or to pull a look together. A vanity light might be just okay on its own, but when it’s paired with a new mirror, artwork, or area rug, the whole space is elevated. With that said, I’m begging you to hang

incorporated across various metals, patterns, and styles. When it comes to color, avoiding tunnel vision may be the most important piece of advice I can provide. You don’t want to create a flat space, but that’s exactly what you’ll get if you choose one color (and tone) and put it everywhere. Just because your walls are grey, that doesn’t mean your couch, floor tile, cabinets, and area rugs have to be grey too. Think of it like the hair on your head, which tends to be a variety of subtle shades. Likewise, you want to mix coordinating tones or introduce some fun complementary colors into your décor.

With retirement on the horizon, New Jersey natives Stephan and Linda Kelly dreamed of relaxing in a beautiful home. But first they had to decide where to live. While Stephan was thinking of Florida, Linda wasn’t ready to move that far away from their children and grandchildren in New Jersey. After plenty of discussions—and a few compromises here and there—the couple set their sights on coastal Delaware and never looked back.

In addition to the home’s location, some of the things Stephan and Linda love about their Bella are the open concept design, generous room sizes, and a first floor owner’s suite that overlooks the lake. In addition to these features, the couple fell in love with the second floor loft and huge bonus room with accompanying bathroom. “I chose to have the bonus room painted lavender in honor of my beloved mother,” Linda mentioned thoughtfully. “Lavender was one of her favorite colors.” While focused on the room, Linda shared two lessons her mother had taught her: to “treat others the way you want

Happy as a Clambake This summer we reached out to Chef Dom Pandolfino of Greater Good Events for recommendations on easy recipes for a summer crowd. As the chef of this catering and event company, he is responsible for menus at parties large and small. The Children’s Beach House on Lewes Beach was the perfect backdrop for a meal meant to be shared with friends. Chef Dom gave us two recipes with impressive presentations and tons of flavor without any complicated preparations. The only thing missing was the right beverage, so we called our friends at Revelation Craft Brewing Company to get some recommendations on beer pairings for this summer feast.

Clambake Nothing says summer more than a clambake on the beach but who wants to do all that work? Chef Dom Pandolfino layers the ingredients in one huge pot to make both preparation and clean up a breeze. The end result is one of the most impressive one-pot meals you can serve. He keeps it simple, saying, “Take quality shellfish, layer, cook, and serve it to friends who love to share. That’s my kind of dinner!” Serves 4
INGR EDIENTS: 8 medium red potatoes, scrubbed and quartered 4 smoked kielbasa, sliced in 3-inch slices 1 can beer (we suggest 16 ounces Revelation Mother-in-Law IPA) 2 bay leaves 3 tablespoons Old Bay or J.O. Seasoning ¾ pound unsalted butter, divided 1¼ pound lobster 1 pound littleneck clams, scrubbed ½ pound unpeeled shrimp 1 pound mussels, rinsed and debearded if necessary 4 ears corn, shucked 1 loaf French bread, sliced
DIR ECTIONS: Place potatoes and kielbasa in a layer in the bottom of a very large pot. Fill the pot with beer and enough water to rise 4-5 inches above the potatoes. Add the bay leaves, seasoning, and ¼ pound of the butter. Place a lid on the pot, bring to a boil, and then simmer over medium-low heat for about 15-20 minutes. Carefully add lobster. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Add clams, shrimp, and corn to the pot. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the mussels and simmer another 5-6 minutes until mussels open. Turn off heat. Remove all ingredients from pot and place on a large platter.
In a separate pot, melt remaining butter for dipping. Slice the French bread and serve it with the clambake platter.

Berry Cobbler This recipe offers an unfussy but delicious end to the meal. Toss it in the oven as your guests are sitting down and the aroma will fill the air just as they finish their entree. Chef Dom says, “I like using a fruity sour beer to add a little tang to this dessert. You won’t go wrong using whatever sour Revelation has on offer.” Serves 8
INGR EDIENTS: 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup granulated sugar, divided ¼ cup unsalted butter ½ cup whole milk 2 cups berries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries or a combination ½ cup framboise liqueur or sour beer
DIR ECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 375˚F. Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.
In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a separate bowl, beat ½ cup sugar and butter until smooth. Add flour mixture and milk, stirring until well combined. Pour batter into prepared baking dish. Combine berries and liqueur or beer in a small bowl. Spoon berries on top of batter. Sprinkle with remaining ½ cup of sugar. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes.

Revelation Craft Brewing Co. The innovative team at Revelation Craft Brewing Company is known for pushing the boundaries in creating beer and experiences you’ll remember. Founder and brewmaster Patrick Staggs has built a craft beer sensation composed of easy-drinking brews, family-friendly hangouts, and enough whimsy to keep things fresh. Conveniently positioned on the bike path between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, this local favorite has created something truly special through the team’s focus on people, passion, and process.
From their original Rehoboth location to the beer garden in Hudson Fields (and a future site soon to open in Georgetown), Revelation offers a variety of styles to satisfy any palate. As Staggs explains, Revelation’s cutting-edge brewing system was designed for consistency, flexibility, and efficiency. From start to finish, it’s all about craftsmanship—and that begins with Revelation’s highquality, USA-made tanks. Their creative beer selection includes lagers, sours, IPAs, bocks, stouts, and everything in between. They even brewed up the Co-Conspirator Apricot Sour just for gluten-free beer enthusiasts. Whether you’re a bona fide beer geek or just beginning to wet your craft brew whistle, you’ll find plenty to love at Revelation.

Given The Chesapeake’s classic architectural details, f lexible f loor plan, and luxurious accents, it’s easy to see why so many of Susan Herring’s appointments at Décor Direct begin with homeowners asking to recreate this popular model. So, naturally we asked her to share some behind-the-scenes insights.
W
hen homeowners tour The Chesapeake, the most common
reaction we receive is their admiration for the well-appointed aesthetic. For many, it’s the whitewashed hardwood paired with the aqua cabinets and stunning quartz countertops, affording a coastal-chic, yet relaxed vibe. “I just love the clean, fresh, beachy feel of this new Aqua cabinet finish from Wellborn,” said Susan. Along with the finishes, it is the combination of size and positioning that make this kitchen and dining area so desirable.
“IT IS EVEN MORE SIGNIFICANT NOW THAT OUR SURROUNDINGS ARE COMFORTABLE AND CURATED.”

The kitchen accommodates an enormous island with a direct path to the dining room wet bar, creating the perfect hub for entertaining. Two-story windows in the great room set the stage for dramatic features throughout The Chesapeake. Providing an abundance of natural light, these windows are guaranteed to bring joy even on an overcast day. The deep coffered ceiling in the great room is another feature that does not go unnoticed. “I incorporated white built-ins in the great room and a lot of wainscotting throughout the home; then I was able to use a bold blue paint color
in the coffered ceiling to complement my upholstery selections,” explained Susan. She also featured a stone fireplace that gives the home a cozy feel while providing a sense of warmth amid the pastel, navy, and whitewash palette. If you need another reason to fall in love with this floorplan, look no further than the owner’s suite. Its generous size offers plenty of space to make it your own personal oasis. Susan carried the same color palette from the open-concept living areas into the bedroom with a navy linen covered desk and a bachelor chest that provide a bold contrast to the

the balance of the walls neutral and added a touch of color in the tray ceiling, guaranteed to draw your eyes upward,” said Susan. Custom drapery in this room adds a fun, bold pattern to the space and complements the colors in the bedding and upholstered headboard. Just when you think it cannot get any better, you’ll find yourself in what is arguably one of our most luxurious bathroom designs. While the included bath footprint is already large, the luxury owner’s options make the bathroom and closets even more spacious. “I chose
Luxury Owner’s Bath II because I loved the idea of the window seat,” said Susan. “Let’s face it, even social butterflies need a tranquil place to curl up with a good book from time to time!” Susan applied a bold wallpaper to the window seat alcove and flanked it with wall sconces to give the space a cozy ambiance. She reintroduced the navy theme by selecting Wellborn’s Bleu cabinet finish and then optimized the look with a white and gray contrasting wall and floor tile. Even the smallest of details, such as the pebble tiled shower floor, have resonated with our homeowners, making

this bathroom one to remember. Despite the blurred line between one’s personal life and career that comes with working from home, many of us have adapted and grown fond of this new routine. Almost every Schell home includes a flex room that can be converted to a study. In this model, the study is positioned at the front of the home to effectively divide work and leisure. The Dove finish that Susan selected for the study built-ins mixes well with the blue and aqua tones throughout the remainder of the home. “I love the calm, casual feel of
this room, and how private it is. It’s a space I would love to work in,” added Susan. There are so many design features that make this floorplan the ultimate showstopper, but what we love most about The Chesapeake is its flexibility, giving buyers the opportunity to personalize it based on individual preferences. This model even features laundry room options, so, whether you want a large “family center” with built-ins or a laundry room with separate walk-in pantry, The Chesapeake has you covered. It also offers something that very few of our homes

include: a secondary bedroom on the first floor, which is great for in-laws, guests who need accessible accommodations, or a second home office. You can even convert this bedroom into a private, second owner’s suite for in-laws. When you venture upstairs, you will be surprised by the roominess of the loft. Large enough to divide into separate entertaining spaces, that is exactly how Susan chose to outfit it. She created two areas: one that could be used as a second living space and another for playing games, building puzzles, or doing homework.
Susan did an impeccable job of making the loft feel like an extension of the first floor living areas by continuing the wainscotting and adding small art pieces and rope sconces to maintain the casual, coastal vibe. Another feature that is a big hit for families with children is the included Jack and Jill bathroom that can be accessed from the loft and third bedroom. In this model, Susan chose to feature Bath 4, creating a private upstairs suite off the fourth bedroom for overnight guests. The finished bonus room above the garage—not featured in this model—offers yet another

suite option for those with large families and/or frequent visitors. And believe it or not, you can even add a fifth bedroom to the rear of the loft if you don’t need the extra lounge space. What was once our sanctuary—separated from the hustle and bustle of daily life, careers and social interactions—now functions as our workplace, a makeshift gym, and a place of stability. We believe that creating beauty around us stimulates productivity, improves relaxation, and promotes happiness. Thus, it is even more significant now, as we weather a pandemic, that our surroundings are comfortable and curated. If you are looking for the perfect new home in coastal Delaware and you haven’t found your match, visit one of our beautiful models and let us help you design your dream. ARE YOU BOTH FROM DELAWARE? CORI: I was born and raised in Ocean City, Maryland. I moved to Delaware shortly after I started working for Schell, in the spring of 2014.
MARK: For most of my childhood, I lived in Covey Creek off Savannah Road, which is only a few miles from downtown Lewes. I could ride my bike to school and into town to hang out with my friends. High school was even closer to my house. Some of my best memories are of walking home with my friends after school to play basketball.

FAVORITE ROOM OR SPACE IN YOUR NEW HOME? CORI: This is a tough question. Pretty much daily, we pick a new favorite aspect of our home. There is not one thing that we would change—honest! My favorite space would probably be the kitchen and great room area. We hosted Christmas this year in our new home and all ten of us were comfortable and had plenty of space to dine and lounge.
MARK: The garage! Since moving in, we’ve painted the garage walls, epoxy coated the floor, and installed cabinets, a workbench, and other storage solutions. A true flex-space, the garage also serves as my home office.
YOU SHARE A LOT—A HOME, AN EMPLOYER, AND ALSO A LOVE FOR FITNESS! HOW DO YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE AREA TO ENJOY BEING ACTIVE TOGETHER? CORI: We are fortunate to work for a company that provides an amazing workout facility; so, any opportunity we get, we work out together at the Schell Brothers gym.
