” Magical is probably the best word to

describe what it was like to spend my summers on Lewes Beach as a kid. I’d wake up in the morning, throw on a pair of shorts (shorts only - never shoes or a shirt) and head outside for a day of pure adventure with my brother and cousins. The activities were endless. Making drizzle castles for hermit crabs on the sandbar, crabbing in the canals, sailing the Sunfish down to Lewes Yacht Club for swimming and volleyball, BBQs on the beach followed by a bonfire and flashlight tag, skimboarding at Cape Henlopen, making forts in the sand dunes, going to Funland on the boardwalk, riding bikes to King’s Ice Cream in Lewes...incredible memories. What more could a kid ask for? My love for Delaware grew as I got older and became a lifeguard with the Rehoboth Beach Patrol. We’d work out and lifeguard during the day, play beach volleyball after work, and then head into Dewey at night for some fun. Not a bad life, right? As time went on, I tried to move away from Delaware - a few times actually - but each and every time I felt like I was holding my breath, trying to figure out a good excuse to move back. Something was always pulling me here. Finally, I realized - Delaware is absolutely where my heart is. My brother and I have this theory that if you love this area it will love you back and take care of you. I can honestly say this has proven true with me. I’m never leaving again. There isn’t a place in the world I’d rather live than right here. At home.

to hone in on your favorite designers and let the beauty unfold in your own home.

DO: Embrace change. DON’T: Change everything all at once. You know what they say, slow and steady wins the race! Not sure what your style is? It’s ok! Start with a timeless approach to your core space; then, start swapping in fun colors and trends through accent furniture and accessories. Choose pieces that don’t require a longterm commitment. Sometimes a new pillow, throw rug, or paint color is all it takes to revamp a space and infuse it with new life.

DO: Keep practicalities in mind. DON’T: Cut corners on your signature pieces. When it comes to saving money on design, there are plenty of options for designing on a dime, but don’t cut corners in all the wrong places. Artwork, drapes, and bedding are three areas I never eschew. Quality drapes can transform a room. It’s entirely worth it to invest in artwork you love and will stand the test of time. And bedding... Just avoid the bed in a bag altogether. Opt for classic white bedding (sheeting, two white euro shams, a white bed skirt, a white duvet cover) and spice it up with a brightly patterned coverlet and pillows.

LET THE GOOD TIMES

ROLL You know you’re at home when the

neighborhood embraces your dog as the community mayor. Then again when you’re Stella Lynn - a skateboarding

bulldog with a penchant for leading the neighborhood watch - it’s no wonder you’re a local celebrity. Stella and her parents, Doug and Pam Lynn, have been calling Sawgrass North home for the past 5 years. But truth be told, their love for the Delaware beaches started long before the foundation of their Schell home was laid.

The taste of summer is irresistible. Crisp, fresh flavors abound, from the seasonal menus of our favorite local restaurants, to the grill and party platters in your very own backyard. For the avid or novice host, a courtyard party is the perfect way to fully embrace the summer season. Stock up on local produce, mix up some inspired cocktails, and fire up the grill - it’s courtyard season!

hen I’m cooking in the summer, I like to let the ingredients do most of the work. It’s hard to improve on a perfectly ripe heirloom tomato in August or an ear of sweet corn p icked that same day. As a result, you will find these recipes don’t require much to p ut together. At the height of summer, I spend my time gathering fresh, amazing ingredients instead of doing extra work in the kitchen. We are lucky to live in a community with a number of great farmers' markets and farm stands, not to mention some of the best growers on the planet; so getting local, seasonal ingredients all summer long is super convenient. - L ion Gardner, Owner/Executive Chef at Blue Moon

COFFEE AND ANCHO RUBBED GRILLED FLANK STEAK WITH CHIMICHURRI · 2-3 lbs trimmed flank steak or skirt steak

1. Rub the steak with the coffee and ancho seasoning and set in the refrigerator

· ¼ cup coffee and ancho rub (recipe follows)

for at least 4 hours or up to one day.

· ½ cup chimichurri (recipe follows)

2. Grill on a hot grill over high heat for 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium rare. The high heat will help turn the rub into a delicious charred crust.

COFFEE AND ANCHO SEASONING

3. Remove from the grill and allow to rest at least 5 minutes before slicing and

· 1 tablespoon good quality coffee grounds

serving. When you cut the meat, always cut across the grain for the best texture.

· 1 tablespoon ancho chile powder

4. Top the platter of sliced steak with a drizzle of chimichurri, a pinch of salt and

· 1 tablespoon kosher salt

serve immediately.

· 1 teaspoon black pepper Combine all ingredients to create seasoning.

CHIMICHURRI · 1 tablespoon olive oil · ¼ teaspoon mustard seeds · ¼ teaspoon coriander seeds · ¼ teaspoon cumin seeds · ¼ cup chopped parsley · ¼ cup chopped cilantro · ¼ cup chopped oregano · 1 clove minced garlic · ½ teaspoon fresh lime juice · Salt and pepper to taste In a food processor, combine all ingredients. Proccess until smooth; season with salt and pepper.

GRILLED FARMERS' MARKET VEGGIES WITH MOZZARELLA BURRATA · 8 oz mozzarella burrata

1. Fire up the grill at least 30 minutes before cooking and give it time to really heat up.

· 2 fresh zucchini, cut into ½” slices

2. Brush the sliced zucchini and eggplant with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

· 1 large eggplant, cut into ½” slices

3. Grill until just cooked through, about 3 minutes per side depending on the grill.

· 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved

When you start seeing decent grill marks, it is a good sign to flip the vegetables over.

· 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

They should be a little soft to the touch, but not completely wilted.

· Fresh herbs such as basil, parsley

4. Remove the zucchini and eggplant from the grill and arrange on a plate. Top with

or cilantro

fresh tomatoes, burrata, fresh herbs and a drizzle of the remaining olive oil.

· Salt and pepper to taste

PRO TIP Mare sure the entire grill is nice and hot - not just the cooking surface. The grill will lose less heat when you start adding food; and everything will grill quickly, evenly, and the vegetables won’t stick to the cook surface as much.

5. Finish with a sprinkle of salt and allow to rest about 5 minutes before serving.

1. Shuck the ears of corn and grill for several minutes, turning regularly, until charred on all sides. 2. Transfer the corn to a platter and slather with butter, then season with salt. Drizzle each ear with ranch dressing, crumbled bacon, diced tomato and fresh herbs. 3. Finish with a little black pepper and serve immediately.

GRILLED PEACHES & CREAM · 6 ripe local freestone peaches · 1 pint blueberries · 6 buttermilk biscuits · Fresh basil · 2 cups fresh whipped cream · ¼ cup local honey

1. Halve the peaches and remove the stone. It’s best not to use overripe peaches for this recipe even though they can be the best for eating. Peaches that are still a little firm will hold up better on the grill. 2. Place the halved peaches on the grill, cut side down, and close the lid. (If you don’t have a lid, use an overturned metal bowl or even a tin foil tent.) Grill for 5 to 7 minutes until they begin to soften slightly. 3. Tear the biscuits into chunks, arrange in a single layer in a baking pan, and put the pan on the grill to toast for several minutes. 4. Arrange the grilled halves in a bowl or on a platter and add the toasted biscuit, fresh blueberries and a drizzle of honey. 5. Top with fresh herbs and whipped cream and serve immediately.

In my op inion, summer cocktails should be simple and refreshing. I often infuse lemonade with fresh fruit or herb simple syrup and serve it in a large p itcher. WATERMELON COOLER · 1 large watermelon, juiced · juice of 2 limes · ½ cup mint simple syrup (recipe follows) · 2 cups of liquor (gin, vodka or tequila)

1. Juice a large watermelon. If you don’t have a juicer, you can cube it and put in a blender and blend for 1 minute. 2. Strain the juice with a fine mesh sieve. Store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use. Shake or stir before using. 3. In a large pitcher, combine a ½ gallon of watermelon juice, the juice of 2 limes, ½ cup of mint simple syrup and 2 cups of your preffered liquor. 4. Pour over ice and serve with a slice of cucumber.

MINT SIMPLE SYRUP · 1 cup water · 1 cup sugar · 1 cup mint leaves

1. Combine water, sugar and mint leaves in a sauce pan. 2. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves, and simmer for 1 minute. 3. Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes. 4. Strain through a fine mesh sieve and set aside to cool. I like to strain into a large mason jar. The syrup can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

LIFE WITHOUT LIMIT A master-planned community has a certain feel to it. It’s hard to define, but you know it the second you drive past the glistening water fountains and gated entrance. You know it when your head swivels back and forth in an attempt to take in the beauty and grandeur before you. You realize that your first thought was, ‘where has this oasis been hiding?!’ This is precisely what happens when you drive through the notably impressive entrance of The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay in Millsboro, Delaware. Not at all what you would expect to find, but, oh boy is it exactly what you’ve been looking for.

athomewithschell.com |

Homeowners at The Peninsula are proud, and rightfully so. They’ve hit the jackpot after all, with a community artfully positioned so that you’re far enough removed from the daily grind...but close enough to access all you need. Just a few hours’ drive from the East Coast’s big cities, and only a short drive from the famed Delaware Beaches, you truly get the best of both worlds. Even better is the fact that just steps from your front door is a seemingly never-ending list of amenities. Indoor and outdoor pools, athletic club, Jack Nicklaus golf course, award-winning clubhouse, spa, nature trail, private beach, tennis, pickleball, kids’ activities center, wave pool...seriously, the list is never-ending.

But as the saying goes, ‘there’s no place like home,’ which is why the homes are the heart of this Sussex Community of the Year. For starters, the options are varied, with floor plans ranging from low-maintenance townhomes, to right-sized ranch homes fit for families and retirees, right on up to the large-scale homes that meet the needs of avid entertainers with a bevy of out of town guests to accommodate. The curb appeal is unparalleled, as are the homeowners residing within. This is a group who knows how to live life to the fullest, relax in style, and LOVE where they live.

According to Community Sales Associate Kathryn Hanlon, what sets The Peninsula apart are (of course) the unique amenities, but also its member involvement. “The Peninsula is one of those communities where

There is truly something for everyone, but especially for those looking to unwind and take a little time to enjoy the finer things in life.”

For Community Sales Manager Austin Oswinkle, it’s the people who make this community all that it is, so much so that he plans on calling The Peninsula home one day. “What I truly love about The Peninsula is that the community has an ‘at home’ feel. From the amazing residents, to the incredible staff, to the overall tremendous care for the community, it never feels like I am going to work; it always feels like I am going home, and that is what makes this community so special.”

Q&A WITH SUSAN As someone who lives in Ocean View, what is your favorite thing about this area? I love that the Ocean View/Bethany area is a quiet, family focused town. The downtown area is full of small Mom and Pop stores. Nothing is a big box store or franchise. Everyone is very friendly and pleasant. The Bethany Beach Chamber of Commerce is committed to keeping the town quaint and beautiful. They do an awesome job!

While designing a model in your hometown, did you shop locally to accessorize The Bluebell? I always try to do some local shopping in the area, especially when accessorizing the models. My favorite go-to shops in Bethany are Gypsy Teal and Su Casa. They have unique accessories that add some personality to the homes that I design.

What excites you about helping people design a home? Bringing their personality into the end product. It’s very important to me that their home feels like them, not me.

RENEE & KATE Renee and Kate are one of those couples who immediately draw you in.

Vibrant, excited, ambitious, adventurous, and head-over-heels in love with one another, the pair is living life to the fullest in Lewes, Delaware. Renee, who just so happens to be Chris Schell's Executive Assistant, and her lovely wife Kate moved into Governors earlier this year, and they couldn't be more excited about the new adventures it brings. Good food, good times and good neighbors are what's on the horizon this summer, paired with plenty of nights relaxing on their screened-in porch with their adorable pup, Sookie.

harming Lewes has long maintained bragging rights for its historical roots, taking deep pride in their designation as ‘The First Town in the First

State.’ And now Lewes basks in the spotlight as one of the most beautiful towns on the East Coast. Take a stroll through the town and you’ll be instantly drawn to the color and natural beauty that is sprinkled throughout. Less discerning visitors may not be able to put their finger on it, but they’ll nonetheless leave with a new love for Lewes. Others will take note of the floral beauty and chalk it up to a town that takes pride in its aesthetic - and they would be right. These hard-working volunteers graciously donate their time year after year and join forces to complete an enormous job overseeing more than twenty gardens in the city of Lewes and planting upwards of 5,000 annuals and 20,000 tulips each year.
