A

s we said farewell to the bitter bite of winter and looked forward to spring’s budding blossoms, a new

season of challenges greeted us. Suddenly, everything

we knew to be normal or unwavering seemed to shift

and fade away. Required to face harsh truths, we were forced apart and often left questioning. Yet somehow, our community became stronger, finding answers together. And, as we rode out the storms of 2020 at home, we began to see home in an entirely new light. Now, with sunny rays heating up summer’s breezes, we take solace in the return of the season’s sweet innocence. We look to the fertile growth in our gardens, to the exhilarating rush of that first dive into the ocean’s waves, and to the evenings that linger, with moments we wish we could bottle up and hold on to forever. Those reclaimed feelings will continue to bring us a sense that, while the new normal will never be the same as before, it will be one that we craft with care, consideration, and community.

It will be a new normal that begins – and endures –

at home.

Resident designer Cori Bane shares her tips and tricks for crafting a home that feels uniquely you. We are all guilty of getting wrapped up in the latest polished and completed looks on Pinterest and Houzz. After all, beauty inspires! But it can also overwhelm, and the path to the perfect home may be wrought with indecision and stress if you’re not careful. Start simple; trust your gut when it comes to your staple pieces and let the inspiration grow from there. For your next decorating project, I challenge you to begin with something tangible and let it be your anchor. What was once a daunting process will quickly become your newest obsession.

Inspiration photo from Cori’s travels to Paris

Do: Draw inspiration from something tangible that speaks to you. Don’t: Get hung up on defining your look. In my opinion, the hardest part about designing and decorating spaces is that we know what we like, but we have trouble putting it all together. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. If there are things you like, identify them. Then shift your focus to establishing your overall palette. What I’ve learned is that, for each of my clients, there is at least one invaluable element that drives the overall home design. When

Pictured: Darlana Medium Lantern from Visual Comfort

they are stuck or uncertain about something, I often stop and ask clients which piece(s) of the puzzle they absolutely cannot live without. If there are one or two items they aren’t willing to part with (i.e., a countertop, cabinet finish, floor tile, etc.), I suggest that they put the others aside and build on what they know they love. I don’t give up on a design space—and you shouldn’t either—until I’ve gotten that smile of approval or honest “I’m in love with it” feedback from each client.

DO: Consider natural and artificial light sources when selecting paint colors. DON’T: Select a paint color without studying it first. If you don’t have a trained eye, selecting paint colors can be a daunting task. The secret to choosing the perfect paint colors the first time around is recognizing that artificial and natural lighting emit different hues. Maybe you made your color selection from a Pinterest post that you’ve been swooning over, or perhaps you’ve been carrying around a swatch of the color in your purse for weeks. The truth of the matter is, you must let lighting be your guide. Observe the color in natural light, artificial light, and at different times of day. In these varied settings, you will be surprised that even neutral colors will reveal different aspects and undertones (such as greens, purples, or blues).

Do: Consider trends. Don’t: Play it safe. Anyone who believes you shouldn’t latch onto trends hasn’t figured out how to do it in a less permanent manner. So, how do you balance trendy and timeless when it comes to décor? Consider selecting popular accessories that can be swapped out over time. Often, trends are geared toward paint colors, fixtures and finishes—all of which can be easily changed. So, order that gold kitchen faucet, cabinet hardware, and dramatic pendant lighting that you’ve been too afraid to buy. I’m not suggesting that you purchase the most expensive fixtures on the market; but, don’t

flight LIFE AT COASTAL CLUB WITH RYAN AND ALEX

Once upon a time, a pre-med student and a military officer exchanged glances across the bar. That glance was quickly followed by a game of darts, a long-distance courtship, an engagement and, well folks, the rest is history. They landed right here in Lewes, Delaware with two children and a deep love for our coastal community!

In addition, Ryan dedicates his free time to an assortment of interests from cooking and reading to LEGO building and drawing, while Alex prefers to relax and unwind in the garden. “I find nurturing plants to be very soothing and think it probably stems from the same place as my commitment to caring for patients,” said Alex. “Planting was my nesting activity during my pregnancy last summer and I completely redid the front beds, including digging up the oak tree and replacing it with a flowering redbud.” Of course, downtime is rare for this couple with two little ones in tow. Family outings are a top priority, with favorite activities including trips to Lewes Beach, Funland in Rehoboth, local farmers markets, or—for some rainy day fun—Shell We Bounce. “We love to go to Lewes Beach to dig in the sand or dip our toes in the water,” said Ryan. “We often dog watch on the Rehoboth boardwalk and venture into Browseabout Books to choose some new books for Adeline and Charlie.”

EAT LOCAL, TASTE FRESH WITH FAVORITES FROM FIFER ORCHARDS 14 at home with Schell Brothers

Oh, those first signs of summer! Is there a more perfect symbol than the simple, gorgeous strawberry? That small fragrant flower on its dense green leaves gives way to a luscious early summer fruit. When in season, strawberries are abundant at fruit stands and farmers markets, in pies, ice creams, and on local menus. One of the best-known farms for strawberries is Fifer Orchards in Camden-Wyoming.

Over 100 years ago, Charles Frederick Fifer began his farm with 300 acres and a passion for growing vegetables. Today, the fourth generation of Fifers continue to grow a diverse array of fruits and vegetables while supplying grocery chains, farmers markets, and community-supportedagriculture systems (CSAs), along with their own endeavors: a Farm, Country Store and CSA in Camden-Wyoming and Farm Market Cafe in Dewey. At the farm, the Fifer team hosts a variety of family-friendly events, from you-pick strawberries to fall and cider festivals.

Our local restaurants love to work with Fifer products for high-quality, seasonal goodness. According to Meghan Lee, owner of Heirloom in Lewes, “They showcase strawberries and asparagus in late spring and then blueberries are right around the corner.” La Vida Hospitality Group (Fork + Flask, Big Chill Beach Club, and Crooked Hammock Brewery) holds a truly magnificent dinner on the farm every year. Now in its twelfth year, the dinner is described by Executive Chef Sean Correa as the event their guests ask about each summer. His explanation reveals how much Chef Correa truly enjoys it, too. “Personally, this is my favorite event all year,” he said. “I love the closeness to nature, the overhead lights, the farm tours! But truly, the best part is when guests round the corner into the seating area and you can hear them gasp. It is magical, Photo Courtesy of La Vida Hospitality

making all the logistics of cooking and serving a gourmet dinner in the middle of a farm— with no electricity or running water—totally worthwhile!”

BISCUITS We used these biscuits to make sandwiches with Virginia ham and honey mustard, but there are so many yummy ways to incorporate them into a delicious handheld meal. Try them with apple jam and sharp cheddar or leftover fried chicken and pickles. Yield: 9 (3-inch) biscuits

I NGRE DI E N TS 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon

1 cup buttermilk

baking powder

1 stick unsalted butter, cold

1 tablespoon sugar

DI REC T IONS Preheat oven to 425°. Using a cheese grater, grate the butter directly into the flour. Add remaining dry ingredients and use your hands to combine, being careful not to over mix. Add the buttermilk and mix with your hands until just incorporated; dough will be shaggy and falling apart. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface (it will be sticky). Press together and roll until dough just comes together. Fold dough over itself 5 or 6 times and roll into a ¾-inch-thick rectangular shape. Cut dough using a biscuit cutter (for round) or a knife (for square). Place biscuits on parchment paper and bake for 6 minutes. Rotate baking sheet and continue to cook until browned, approximately 6 more minutes. Cool on rack.

L A N D I N G Forget farm to table, we’re talking farm to beach in our latest model home, The Mayberry. Décor Direct’s Susan Herring gives us the rundown on what makes this model a perfect balance of function and form.

W

hen your home designs are anchored in Coastal Delaware,

the pervasive ask is typically for a coastal or beachy look. Add current trends to the mix and you’ve got quite the conundrum when it comes to balancing beach chic with modern farmhouse. This is precisely how The Mayberry at Tidewater Landing was born. After receiving numerous requests for a farmhouse-style model, Susan opted to put her own spin on things, delivering what she aptly terms, “coastal farmhouse.”

Nothing speaks to this more, of course, than the original inspiration for the model home— an Assateague-inspired art piece that Susan discovered in Atlanta. “It reminded me of the horses at the beach on Assateague Island. I was just waiting for the right model to use it in!” Susan envisioned her new favorite find on a dark blue or charcoal-colored wall. “That was the starting point for this model,” explained Susan. A dark blue backsplash tile followed suit in the kitchen, and voilà, the color palette for the model was born. Susan artfully used the white shiplap along the great room wall to weave the coastal and farmhouse elements together while providing the perfect complement to those deep-dark blues. “It’s dramatic, without closing in the space,” said Susan. Of course the vaulted ceilings serve as a space-opener as well, with wood beams that epitomize the quintessential farmhouse style. SW 6257 GIBRALTAR ↑ WALLS “The dark blue colors were a must! It is definitely a trend to use dark colors on walls right now.” HONED MARBLE ON THE FIREPLACE (right page) “This is a new offering by Schell, and I love the casual vibe it creates. Of course I also love that it doesn’t show fingerprints!”

OFFICE DESK ↓ “I love the industrial feel of it. One of my favorite things is to incorporate furniture pieces that show versatility or multifunction. This piece can be used as a working desk but also as a craft space, library table, or an area where children can sit to do homework.”

There’s a reason this home consistently ranks as one of the top-selling f loor plans year after year. In true Schell style, The Mayberry has both function and beauty at the heart of its layout, with wide-open spaces and natural light that evoke an uncanny balance of grandeur and comfort. It incorporates thoughtful touches around every corner, each of which were born from extensive customer feedback. The pocket door that separates the secondary rooms from the living space provides a true sense of privacy—and quiet—for children or overnight guests. It’s just one of the reasons this f loor plan appeals to growing families with a busy lifestyle as well as retirees looking for a home that will comfortably accommodate beach visits from relatives and friends.

In the basement, the options are endless, with ample room for storage, hobbies, entertaining or, in this case, games. From the air hockey and pool tables to dice-inspired artwork on the walls, Susan kept the avid gamers in mind when outfitting this eclectic space. On sunshine-filled days and magical, twilight-inspired evenings, it’s an absolute must to get outside, which is why the courtyard rivals the basement as a gamechanger for entertaining guests or unwinding solo after a long day. And, capturing your ideal living space doesn’t have to hinge on breaking the bank. “In an effort to cut costs, I found this inexpensive outdoor furniture collection that offered a lot of bang for the buck,” Susan explained. “I love that it has a dark, charcoal-striped accent, giving a high-

end look for a fraction of the price.” Paired with a black wicker sofa, armless chairs, and a round cocktail table with club chairs, the end result was exactly what Susan envisioned: a great spot to relax and socialize. It’s that unique combination of comfort and style that sets this home apart, and one could argue that it was the pairing of coastal and farmhouse styles that ultimately achieved that result. In fact, a quick stroll through The Mayberry is all you need to to tap into the uncanny balance of spaciousness, splendor, and comfort that can only be evoked when you feel … at home.

When the world is your oyster and you’ve traveled and lived throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, it’s not easy deciding where you want to settle down. YOU ARE BOTH DELAWAREANS NOW, BUT ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM DELAWARE? RICH: I’m originally from Chicago while Diane is from New Jersey, where we met over 40 years ago. Our love for travel brought us together and we’ve been fortunate to have lived and worked in multiple places across North America, Europe, and Asia. We’ve had short work assignments in various locations around the globe, and we used these assignments as opportunities to see the world. Our extensive travel allowed us to experience places as far reaching as Nepal, South Africa, Bali, and Borneo. While living overseas with a vantage point from outside the U.S. looking in, we gained a greater appreciation of our own country, along with up-close perspectives on diverse cultures around the world.

DIANE: Those international experiences inspired me to return to college and obtain a second degree in International Studies. Following that interest, I pursued a new career in the field of Intercultural Training and Development.

BEYOND SENATORS, TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. DIANE: Rich and I are both thoroughly enjoying our participation in local community activities. I love to garden, and as a Board Member of Lewes in Bloom (LIB), I help to promote the beautification of the historic city of Lewes with 250 other volunteers. LIB is recognized nationally and internationally for their beautification efforts.

RICH: I’m a member of the Board of Directors for the Lewes Junction Rail & Bridge Association that is working to preserve and display the history of Lewes and Eastern Sussex County railroads. The group is currently working to save the unique, hand-cranked swing bridge over the Lewes Canal. Built in 1916, the bridge was a crucial link in the rail system that made Lewes a hub of agriculture, fishing, and national defense. Additionally, I’m managing a project with the Lewes Public Library and Art in Bloom to construct an enclosure on the west side of the library that replicates the Lewes Junction Rail Station. During the winter months, Diane and I often cook and serve at the Immanuel Shelter for homeless people in the Cape Region.

PROJECT KUDOS A LOOK INTO THE GRASSROOTS MISSION THAT HAS MOVED MOUNTAINS IN OUR COMMUNITY At Schell Brothers, we take deep pride in our unique company culture, which is heavily rooted in the pursuit and practice of happiness. An integral part of that culture involves lifting one another up through thoughtful words of encouragement. A simple “great job” or “I appreciate you” can be incredibly powerful, and we’ve found that the ripple effect of such statements are immeasurable. By giving kudos to each other at company meetings and throughout the workday, we have successfully created an environment that is overflowing with optimism, gratitude, and happiness.
