It all starts
at home.
Each autumn, we settle in and prepare for the holiday season, and despite the manic hustle and bustle that may accompany it, the season’s warm tidings evoke a feeling of warmth and comfort in us all. We pause to breathe the crisp autumn air, to give season’s greetings, and to cherish our family traditions. We reach out to loved ones, and embrace the less fortunate. We give, we receive, we gather. The smells and flavors, the sights and sounds, the laughter and light—they all culminate in holiday gatherings. And, although we repeat this beautiful ritual year after year, we never tire of its simple beauty. Whether it’s the comfort of the season’s food, the warm, autumnal hues and tones, or the familiarity of its traditions that leave us feeling so grounded this time of year, there’s no denying the fulfillment and simple joys that come from a gathering of our loved ones. Friends, coworkers, family, new acquaintances … we all come together to revel in the abundance and beauty of it all. This season, we encourage you to slow down and take it all in. It’s gathering season, and it all starts AT HOME.

Don’t stop believing ... or dreaming! Resident designer Jaime Senard shares her insider tips for turning your wildest design dreams into a tangible reality.
What’s the secret to designing the perfect home for you? YOU! That’s right, your dream home starts at home, with your own inspirations. I am a huge believer in designing a home that is not only functional and beautiful but also makes you eternally happy. It’s not home without you in it, and it certainly isn’t your dream home without a collection of spaces that reflect your imagination.
DO: Be conscious of the scope of your space. DON’T: Push all the furniture to the walls. A good rule of thumb is that all of the furniture in your room should be able to fit on the rug. Bigger is always better when it comes to a rug, so go big, or go home! An undersized rug results in a room that feels smaller than it really is and furniture that looks cluttered and uncoordinated. To that end, don’t forget about proper spacing. While you don’t want to crowd your pieces (or your guests for that matter), you also don’t want to position your furniture against the walls. Centralize to create a more conversational and intimate feel.
DO: Embrace the bold and the beautiful. DON’T: Forget to bring textures into the mix. When it comes to the smaller rooms and spaces in your home, don’t shy Sherwin Williams Paint Selections (shown on anchor wall) Top: SW7005 Pure White; Bottom: SW6229 Tempe Star 6 at home with Schell Brothers

PRO T I P Utilize texture and color via area rugs, pillows, artwork, draperies and accessories. You would be surprised at how much extra character a few throw pillows can bring to your space.
DO: Splurge on new finds. DON’T: Break the bank in one fell swoop. OK, OK. We’re all guilty of splurging on that ‘gotta have it ... absolutely can’t live without it ... head over heels in love with it’ find. And you should! But it doesn’t have to completely derail your budget. Mix your new favorite find with your older pieces. The result will be an eclectic feel that is true to you.

AT FIRST SIGHT LIFE AT PENINSULA LAKES WITH TIM AND KRISTEN SLADE
It’s often said that the best things in life are the unexpected, that the path you least expect is what opens widely and serendipitously before you. This sentiment rings true for Tim and Kristen Slade, who never expected to find their happily ever after in the small, but oh so unexpectedly perfect, town of Millsboro, Delaware.

Love at first sight struck again when the Slades walked into the model home. “As soon as we stepped into the Kingfisher we knew it was the house we wanted and the community we wanted to live in,” explained Kristen. “It felt like us and it just felt right.” Of course for Tim, it was a done deal the moment he saw the basement. “Joe walked us downstairs and I was sold!” Tim’s ‘must have’ feature was a man cave, ideally in the form of a basement, where he could realize his dream of having a bar, TV, and sports memorabilia all in one place that he and his friends could enjoy. For Kristen, who had been living in a row home in Wilmington for the past 10 years, it was the abundance of natural light in the Schell model that had her hooked. “Everything people had told us about expecting a difficult process really wasn’t true with Schell,” said Tim, with Kristen adding, “We really had no clue what we were doing, and yet it wasn’t a difficult or stressful experience. They held our hands the whole way.” Once the Slades were officially settled in at Peninsula Lakes, it was time to explore the community and the area, but they didn’t have to travel far. TURKEY TIP For a smaller gathering, say 6 to 8 people, try roasting a bone-in turkey breast instead of a whole bird. You won’t have as many leftovers, but more importantly, you won’t run into the age-old problem of over-cooking the delicate breast meat while the legs and thighs cook through. About one-half to three-quarters of a pound per person is plenty.
Thanksgiving has arrived, bringing with it those bold, fresh flavors you look forward to all year long. It’s the season of giving thanks, but it’s also the season of giving an extra helping of hospitality to your loved ones by opening your beautiful home and cooking up a downright delicious holiday feast. We’ve teamed up with Lion and Meg Gardner from Blue Moon to bring you some of the season’s tastiest recipes.
OV E N-ROA ST E D T U R K E Y BR E A ST 1 bone-in turkey breast (5 to 6 lbs) 1 cup celery, large-diced 1 cup carrots, large-diced 2 cups onions, large-diced 1 head garlic Sprigs of fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, sage) 3 tablespoons olive oil or butter Salt and fresh cracked black pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 375° F. Generously season turkey cavity with salt and pepper, then stuff the turkey with garlic and herbs. Arrange the largediced vegetables in the bottom of a roasting pan to form a bed of sorts, then put the turkey breast on top skin-side up, using the vegetables to support the turkey if necessary. Brush the skin with the oil or butter and season it with salt and pepper. Cook the turkey breast for about an hour, basting every 12 to 14 minutes or so. Begin checking the temperature in the thickest part of the breast and remove when it reaches 155° F. Let the turkey rest for 20 minutes before carving.

CANDIED SWEET POTATOES 3 lbs sweet potatoes, cubed and cut into 2-inch chunks 1 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt ¼ lb butter ½ cup toasted pecans, chopped
Preheat oven to 400° F. In a large pot of gently simmering water, cook the sweet potatoes until they just begin to soften, about 12 minutes. Strain the potatoes and while still hot, gently toss with the butter, salt, and brown sugar. Arrange the sweet potatoes in a baking dish that is at least 2 inches deep as the sweet potatoes and sugar will combine to create a fair amount of syrup. Bake the sweet potatoes for 45 minutes until lightly browned and very soft and syrupy. Top with the chopped pecans and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes. Remove, allow to cool for at least 15 minutes and serve.
MAPLE-GLAZED BRUSSELS SPROUTS & BACON 2 lbs Brussels sprouts, halved and cleaned
Salt and fresh black pepper to taste 2-3 strips of thick-sliced bacon
¼ cup sliced onion
1 tablespoon butter
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
1 tablespoon cooking oil
¼ cup maple syrup
1 tablespoon sherry wine
Preheat a cast iron skillet or other heavy-bottom sauté pan over medium heat. Add the bacon to the pan and cook until it is slightly crispy and brown and the fat has rendered. Remove the pan from heat, take out the bacon and set it aside. Leave the rendered bacon fat in the pan and return to heat. Add the oil and butter. When the butter begins to brown, add the Brussels sprouts to the pan, cut-side down, without crowding them. Work in batches if necessary. Cook the Brussels sprouts until the cut side appears golden and crispy, then add the rosemary. Toss the pan and continue to cook until the Brussels sprouts have begun to soften. Add the sherry and cook a minute or so until the liquid has mostly evaporated, then add the maple syrup and cook another minute until the vegetables are evenly glazed. Season with salt and fresh cracked black pepper and serve.

CORNBREAD STUFFING with Chesapeake Oysters & Bacon 2 lbs cornbread (fresh made or store bought) 12 fresh Chesapeake oysters (or substitute 1 pint shucked) 4 oz bacon, chopped 1 cup onion, diced ½ cup celery, diced 1 cup chicken stock ¼ lb butter 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped 1 teaspoon celery seeds 1 egg, beaten Salt and pepper to taste
The day before making the stuffing, preheat oven to 250° F. Tear or cut the cornbread into roughly ¾-inch pieces and arrange on a baking sheet. Cook in the oven for 15 minutes, then turn the oven off but leave the tray of cornbread chunks to dry in there overnight.
Preheat oven to 350° F. If using fresh oysters, shuck the meat and be sure to reserve the liquor. Heat a large, heavy-bottom pan (such as an iron skillet) at medium-high, add the chopped bacon, and cook for several minutes until browned and slightly crispy. Remove the bacon from the pan and set aside. In the same pan, cook the onion and celery in the rendered bacon fat for 4 to 5 minutes or until translucent but not browned. Add the sage and celery seeds and cook until fragrant, about another minute or so. Transfer sautéed vegetables to a large mixing bowl, add the dried cornbread and oysters, then drizzle with the oyster liquor and about ⅔ of the chicken stock. Mix well to combine, then gently fold in the shucked oysters, egg, bacon and parsley. Transfer mixture to a lightly greased baking dish (or back to the cast iron skillet if using), and stud the top with a few cubes of butter. Cook for 45 minutes or until golden brown on top and hot throughout, and serve.

PONZI PINOT GRIS Willamette Valley A true Oregon gem! The Ponzi family has been making Pinot Gris for nearly 40 years and winemaker Louisa Ponzi is well-known for making a food-friendly crowd pleaser. This is a juicy sipper with ripe pear and orange flavors that will complement the variety of flavors spread across your Thanksgiving table.
STOLLER PINOT NOIR Dundee Hills A beauty of a wine with concentrated red cherries and baking spice. This wine, with its hints of hazelnuts and earth, pairs nicely with turkey and all the gorgeous, fall side dishes that Thanksgiving brings. It is a structured Pinot that tastes a great deal more opulent than its price point suggests.

BU T T E R N U T SQUA SH PI E CRU ST: 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sugar ⅓ lb cold butter, cubed ¼ cup ice water Sift together the flour, sugar and salt. Cut the butter into the flour mixture using a handheld pastry blender or in the bowl of a stand mixer using the paddle attachment. When the butter pieces are roughly nickel sized and smaller, add the cold water and mix until the dough comes together and can be shaped into a ball or block. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate at least one hour (or up to three days) before using. When ready to make the pie, remove the dough from the refrigerator and let rest at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes. Then roll out to approximately ¼-inch thickness and place in a lightly greased 9-inch pie dish, cutting off the excess dough. The crust is now ready for filling and baking. F I L L I NG: 2 cups pureed roasted butternut squash* 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ⅛ teaspoon ground clove ½ teaspoon kosher salt Preheat oven to 350° F. In a large mixing bowl, mix all the ingredients until completely blended. Pour the filling mixture into the pie crust until it’s about ¼-inch from the top of the crust. Bake 25 to 30 minutes until pie filling is set. Remove and allow to cool before serving with fresh whipped cream and homemade cranberry sauce.
* To roast the butternut squash, cut each squash in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds from the round end and place each piece cut-side down on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Bake at 350° F for 30 to 45 minutes until the squash is soft and easily pierced with a knife. Allow the squash to cool and scrape the flesh away from the skin. Puree the squash in a food processor until smooth.

TIDEWATER LANDING
At Schell Brothers, we know that there are many options for new home communities in Southern Delaware, which is why we take great pride in partnering with only the best developers when deciding where the next Schell logo will land. After an amazing and award-winning experience building in Bayside, we were thrilled at the chance to work with the Freeman team once again. With wooded lots and mature trees, Tidewater Landing makes the most of its beautiful Love Creek location. The thriving gatherings at our new Clubhouse and the feeling of caring and community are ever present here. We couldn’t be more pleased with our home, our neighborhood and Schell Brothers!”
THE FIGGS “Tidewater Landing is such a great fit for our family! We love the mature trees that adorn the neighborhood and the inviting nature trail that encourages our son to play outdoors with our two dogs. We feel so fortunate to have met wonderful neighbors and have enjoyed many afternoon pool gatherings with our new friends. We are looking forward to creating many more memories here at Tidewater Landing!”

RICK & CELIA KATZEN “We’re so happy to be enjoying life at Tidewater Landing. We can’t believe we’ve been here over a year already! Tidewater is the perfect size for us. We love the amenities and are especially excited about our future kayak launch and dock at Love Creek. The surrounding area has some great restaurants, and that makes it easy to go out to dinner with all of our new friends!”
MACK AND ALICE MORRISON “We fell in love with Tidewater Landing when we first visited in August 2017. Back then, there was only a trailer for the sales team and lots of dirt and mud, but plenty of trees! The peacefulness of the woods was mesmerizing and that’s what sold us on the community. We love being surrounded by nature – especially the trees, the walking trail, and Love Creek. We are so happy that we chose to build in Tidewater Landing. Our neighbors are wonderful and we look forward to building a terrific community together.”

ave you ever wondered how our model homes seem to transition
effortlessly from a blank canvas to a dazzling display of artistry? Believe it or not, the magic starts with you. With each floor plan and design, our team looks closely at customer feedback. What’s working or not working? What’s trending in or out? Finally, what are you absolutely craving in a new home? The Lilac is no exception, boasting an incredible mix of pragmatic functionality with impeccable style. Ranging in square footage from 2,431 to 4,820 with four to seven bedrooms, this floor plan is the definition of versatility, making it the perfect fit as the showcase model at the newest section of The Peninsula, Sailside. “Decorating this home was fun for me,” said Designer Susan Herring. “The Peninsula is one of our neighborhoods where we see the retiree buyer who is looking for a more traditional forever home, along with the seasonal buyer searching for that weekend getaway—so we wanted to appeal to both.” The outcome is a modern take on the traditional, communicated in a cohesive theme that effortlessly reverberates throughout the Lilac, both in floor plan layout and interior design.

← GREAT ROOM “The fun round ottomans feature a swivel base. They are one of my favorite elements in the room.”
KITCHEN ↓ The creamy tones of the backsplash tile contrast nicely with the Drift Pewter finish of the cabinets. The White Ice granite countertop is a great complement to the cabinets and tile.
The design inspiration was sparked from the fabric on the great room sofa. ”The raisincolored fabric was a favorite of mine that I spotted at the 2018 Fall Highpoint Furniture Market,” Susan explained. “It was an unusual and unexpected color, so I decided to run with it as the inspiration for this model. When I paired it with dark wood tones, I felt that it embodied a deep, rich, sophisticated and cozy feel.” This eclectic combination was the perfect way to showcase Schell’s role as the exclusive builder and developer for the Sailside neighborhood. Those same hues continue into the kitchen, with dark cabinetry along the perimeter. In contrast, a sandstone-colored island and coordinated backsplash were selected to lighten and brighten the kitchen, while modern furnishings were introduced to balance the traditional color scheme.

Sophisticated notes are woven throughout the owner’s suite as well. “I chose more traditional furniture pieces in a dark wood and used neutral paint colors and bedding choices to give the space a relaxing atmosphere,” said Susan. For a pop of color, she favored bold fabric with a red dragon design for the iron bench. Upstairs, fun meets function in the wellappointed loft space. “The lofts are large and really can be anything you want them to be,” explained Susan. “The first step in decorating any room is to consider how you plan to use the space. We wanted to showcase the loft as an additional area for welcoming guests, so we added comfy leather sofas, a functional entertainment wall, and as much seating as possible.”
↑ OWNER’S BATH This is the first Lilac where we added the soaking tub as an option. It transforms the space! OWNER’S BEDROOM (right page) The dark shutters complement the rich tones of the furniture. The red and gold dragon print on the bench give the bedroom a sophisticated look.

BONUS ROOM → This beautiful pingpong table was custom made by Schell Brothers employee Chris Hershey. ↓ STUDY This room inspired the decision to use wood tone shutters. The deep hues of the paint colors combine with the rich textures of the drapery and rug to further enhance the casual, masculine feel of the room.
In the convivial bonus room, the black and white surfer mural adds just the right touch of drama to the active space. Paired with the ping-pong table, the room artfully conveys its purpose as a recreational area that’s sure to become the gathering point for future homeowners to kick back, relax, and have entirely too much fun. Of course it wouldn’t be beach living without casual vibes and a nod to the nautical. The twin bedroom achieves both, with nautical artwork, stone-washed striped fabric for the slipcovered headboards, and pulley-style sconces above the bed.

Q&A WITH SUSAN
How do you deal with the different personalities or styles that clients bring to a home? It’s tough; I always joke that I’m part designer, part marriage counselor. More often than not, clients have different visions for their home, so I try to negotiate happy mediums and make sure everyone comes away with a must-have piece.
Which room responds best to wallpaper? I love small spaces with bold prints. I also love using wallpaper to accentuate a bed wall or ceiling. Textures are so popular right now, too. You can transform a space by adding wallpaper in small ways, such as at the back of a built-in.

As the holiday madness sets in, one of the best ways to take a much-needed time out is by way of the kitchen. Paired with the magic of a mouth-watering Christmas cookie, a good baking session is just what the doctor ordered. Of course the best-tasting cookie is one that has nostalgia baked into every delicious bite. Tradition thrives in the kitchen, and there’s no better time to bring your most cherished recipes to life than during the holidays. For some inspiration, we’ve shared some Schell team favorites. Let the baking begin!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF LIFE IN LEWES AND LIFE AT BREAKWATER? MEGAN: What’s not to love? Our neighborhood is beautiful, especially at night. I always walk while my seven-yearold rides her bike after dinner and it’s such a peaceful experience. Schell puts a lot of thought into the design and curb appeal of their communities and I appreciate that. We have sidewalks (which many communities lack), street lights, gorgeous landscaping and fantastic neighbors passing us with their dogs or waving from their front porches. MIKE: Lewes fits that need for us. The Breakwater trail runs right behind our neighborhood. With a quick, 10-minute bike ride we’re in downtown Lewes, and 30 minutes in the other direction has us walking the boardwalk in Rehoboth. All this, without having to drive on Coastal Highway!
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR KIDDOS. MEGAN: Our kids, oh man! They are a lot to handle but we love them to pieces! Our oldest, Michaela, is seven and she’s in second grade. She is spirited and inquisitive and keeps us on our toes!

Whether you visit the State or Federal side of Assateague Island, you’ll be fully immersed and totally in awe of the park’s natural beauty. And that’s true any time of year: sunshine or snow, swimsuits or sweatshirts. Enjoy the beach, set up camp (literally, you can camp out in a tent or camper; but plan ahead, these sites go fast), rent a paddleboard, schedule an ecotour, or explore one of the marked trails. Bonus: The beaches are dog-friendly, all year long! Pro-Tip: DO NOT touch the ponies or try to feed them ... as tempting as it may be. You’re on Ponies at Assateague Island
their turf, so please, be respectful.
