Schertz Gets Movin

THE ANNUAL MOVIN ON MAIN EVENT ROLLED INTO THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF SCHERTZ ON APRIL 2ND BRINGING THE CITY TOGETHER FOR A DAY OF FUN IN THE STREETS.

This Ciclovia-style event promotes an active lifestyle and healthy living alongside vendors in the community specializing in these areas. The length of Main Street was closed to traffic allowing pedestrians to bike, skate, stroll, and even hoverboard their way through the event. Over 60 local businesses attended the event and inspired eventgoers to get out and move in the beautiful spring weather as they promoted a healthy body, mind, and spirit.

Various fitness demos and exercise stations were free to experience as well as music, local food vendors, a rock wall, soccer darts, and connect-4 basketball!

This year’s event brought a Vendor Bingo challenge and raffle where eventgoers collected stickers from all the vendors as they visited and took part in the individual activities they had set up. The raffle offered a chance to win one of 15 prizes donated by local businesses and participants earned one raffle ticket for every 5 stickers collected.

An estimated 2,500 residents came out for the activities sponsored by Northeast Methodist Hospital, Schertz H-E-B Plus!, Schertz Cibolo Emergency Clinic, and Raising Cane’s and hosted by Schertz Parks and Recreation, the City of Schertz, and the Schertz Family YMCA. Alongside all the fun, the day marked some celebratory moments for a couple of city services as well. Schertz Animal Services found a home for three of the four pups they brought out - and Schertz Public Library signed up 10 new cardholders to their branch! All of this was made possible with the help of 21 event volunteers, city staff, event sponsors, local businesses and vendors, and everyone who came out to support the community and a healthy lifestyle.

CITY

Appreciation Weeks

As a result, the week that date falls is known as Police Week. This year, National Police Week will be held May 14 – 20. This nationally recognized week pays special gratitude to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others while honoring America’s law enforcement community still serving today.

National EMS Week

EMS: Where Emergency Care Begins

May 21 – 27, 2023, is the 48th annual National EMS Week. In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation's communities. This year's theme is EMS: Where Emergency Care Begins.

National EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line." EMS Week is the perfect time to recognize our EMS staff, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Paramedics for all that they do for our City and surrounding areas.

Schertz EMS continues to educate the community with several different health courses including CPR & First Aid, Stop the Bleed, and Babysitting classes. This year Schertz EMS also launched the Yellow Dot Program which is a new initiative that assists in the "golden hour" of emergency care following a traffic crash when someone may not be able to communicate their needs themselves. Learn more about these programs at Schertz.com/communityhealth.

Join us in thanking our Schertz EMS personnel for caring for our community, and make sure to follow Schertz Emergency Medical Services on Facebook to keep up with all they have going on!

National Police Week

Respect. Honor. Remember.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The Cibolo Police Department will be hosting a Police Memorial on Monday, May 15, at 6 p.m. The ceremony will be held at Santikos (18124 IH 35N). The community is welcome to attend the ceremony as we honor the lives of fallen brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, Texas leads the nation in officer casualties in the line of duty. In 2022, 36 officers made the ultimate sacrifice.

Please join us in honoring our police officers this May for their service and sacrifice to our community.

National Public Works Week

Connecting the World Through Public Works

National Public Works Week is May 21 – 27 and this year’s American Public Works Association (APWA) theme for the week is "Connecting the World Through Public Works." Public works is the thread that connects us all, no matter where we live in the world. Every public works professional strives to improve the quality of life for the community they serve, leading to healthier, happier communities.

The "Connecting the World Through Public Works" theme highlights the way public works professionals connect us physically, through infrastructure, and inspirationally, through service to their communities, whether as first responders, or daily workers carrying out their duties with pride.

Public works connectors help keep communities strong by providing an infrastructure of services in transportation, water, wastewater, and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds, emergency management and first response, solid waste, and right-of-way management. They are what make our communities great places to live and work.

Join us in celebrating the quiet work these professionals do that makes life better for all of us.

On Friday, May 26 we encourage you to wear orange in support of our Public Works team and invite you to take a moment to say thank you to those who often work behind the scenes and at the heart of Schertz to improve everyday quality of life.

Economic Development Week

Enhancing Our Local Economy

The City of Schertz Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) marks the week of May 8 to May 12, 2023, Economic Development Week. During this week, communities across North America will celebrate and recognize the contributions made by professional economic developers to create more economically vibrant and livable communities.

Created in 2016 by International Economic Development

Council (IEDC), the largest international professional trade association for economic developers, Economic Development Week aims to increase awareness for local programs that create jobs, advance career development opportunities, and improve the quality of life in communities everywhere.

Within the City of Schertz, economic development efforts are led by the SEDC, a non-profit industrial development corporation that was established by Schertz residents in 1998. The mission of the SEDC is to grow the Schertz economy through projects. Specifically, projects that focus on the creation/retention of primary jobs and infrastructure improvements. This is exampled through street improvement efforts in the Tri County Industrial Park and the participation in regional job fairs and round tables that foster open dialogue, identify challenges, promote information sharing, and allow primary job employers to share best practices.

Visit SchertzEDC.com to learn more about the SEDC’s role in economic development for the city through the SEDC’s blog post series and reports found at SchertzEDC.com/blog.

Developing Future Community Leaders

SCHERTZ AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS WHILE LEARNING ABOUT THEIR COMMUNITY AS PART OF THE FIRST CLASS OF THE SCHERTZ YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM.

The program is conducted by the Schertz Parks & Recreation Department and was developed to give area students a behind-the-scenes look at their local government in action while developing future community leaders and informed citizens.

The free program is open to any high school student (public, private, or home-schooled) who lives in Schertz or is part of the SchertzCibolo-Universal City Independent School District. It follows the same general calendar as the school year, beginning in November and consisting of one full-day session each month from November through April, with a graduation ceremony in May. The first class consisted of seven students who represented Clemens and Steele high schools as well as St. Mary’s Hall. They began the program last fall and will graduate this coming May.

According to Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Director Lauren Shrum, the Schertz Young Leaders Program was intended to

benefit both the students and the local community.

“We decided to establish the Schertz Young Leaders Program to provide opportunities for exceptional high school students to learn more about their community and local government in hopes that they become the leaders of tomorrow who will go on to serve this community,” said Shrum. “The program shows young people the many facets of a great communityeducation, economic development,

quality of life, core services, and our military connection.”

Each monthly program session has a different theme. This year’s themes included leadership, education, local government, and community partnerships. The sessions begin with leadership training in the morning, and the City has partnered with consulting firm Operation Total Leadership to provide this training on various leadership subtopics including personality styles, decision-making, communication tools, and emotional

Feature 14 / SCHERTZ MAGAZINE May 2023

intelligence. In the afternoon, the students visit places like City Hall, the Police and Fire Departments, and Randolph Air Force Base to hear from various community leaders who serve as guest speakers for the session.

After each session, the students create an action plan including a selfassignment for them to practice one of the skills that they’ve learned. During the graduation ceremony in May, each student will give a short presentation about the results of one or more of their action plans, explaining how they’ve been able to implement the program skills in their lives and how it has benefitted them.

Marisa Estremera is one of the members of the current class, and she believes that the program has been an enjoyable and impactful learning opportunity that has helped to prepare her for the future.

“Getting the opportunity to meet and learn from all the people that make the city what it is was a truly fantastic

experience,” she said. “It allowed me to learn how a city conducts its business and how many passionate people it takes to make Schertz what it is today.”

As they look forward to the completion of the first year, the program staff are already planning for the next.

Recreation Manager Cassandra Paddock notes that they are considering expanding the timeframe of next year’s program to begin in October with a leadership teambuilding day. She also stated that they plan to gather feedback directly from the students as they look for opportunities for improvement.

“At the end of each program year, we plan to survey the students to get ideas for next year,” she said. “We’ll also meet with our application review team and evaluate how we can continue to grow and improve the program.”

Students who are interested in participating in next year’s class will

need to go through an application process which includes filling out an application form, writing an essay, and providing their GPA and information about their extracurricular activities. The program is expected to begin accepting applications for the 20232024 school year in the fall, and the application form will be posted on Schertz.com/youngleaders.

For more information on the Schertz Young Leaders Program, please contact Schertz Parks & Recreation at (210) 619-1850.

The program shows young people the many facets of a great community—education, economic development, quality of life, core services, and our military connection.

International Firefighters' Day

MAY 4, 2023 IS RECOGNIZED AS INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS' DAY.

INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY IS A WAY TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE WORLD’S FIREFIGHTERS FOR ALL THAT THEY DO TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE.

Born out of a tragic loss of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia, it was a way to honor their lives and the sacrifice that firefighters are willing to make for us on a daily basis. We invite our community to join us in celebrating and highlighting the great work firefighters do every day, and to thank them for all that they do to keep us safe. We also encourage residents to make fire prevention a priority and take the proactive measures in preventing fire-based emergencies and reducing the damage caused by them.

For more information on what the Schertz Fire Department has going on follow them on Facebook or call (210) 619-1300.

Clemens Bowling Makes School History

Samuel Clemens High School Bowling has continued to have winning seasons since their debut back in 2011, but something about this year made the outcome different.

The Samuel Clemens High School Bowling team recently took their talents to one of the biggest stages in high school bowling and found themselves in new yet familiar territory. Clemens Bowling Head Coach, Evan Johnson touched on the team’s motivation for the year, “As a coach, you always want your team to achieve everything you know they are capable of doing. After finishing state runnerup last year, I told the team there was only one way to improve on the season." The Clemens Bowling Team recently went to the 2023 THSBC State Tournament where they had two players compete in the men’s individual competition and one player compete in the women’s individual competition. To top off their time at the

State Championship, Samuel Clemens took the State title for Team Bowling!

Clemens Bowling Senior, Riley Tabuyo, spoke on the team’s success saying, “The work and time our coaches and my teammates put in showed character and passion, for that I’m

thankful. My final season was full of the greatest fun and finished off with a fulfilling end.” The Samuel Clemens Bowling Team made school history during their season, and Sponsor Jeffrey Gideon CMSgt. shared, “The best part is seeing them grow as a team and as individuals.”

LOOKING BACK Schertz

Something To Think About . . .

“Most do not listen to understand, but rather to reply.”

Schertz History

The earliest settlers to the area built homes using building techniques developed in their native lands to include the use of half-timbering “fachwerk” (insulation and construction technique) design for adequate insulation. With the abundance of limestone, the stone provided a strong material for home building and soon larger two-story homes began to be built. As the town prospered, new homes with metal and wood construction with porches, fireplaces, decorative trim, and wide entryways was a reason for pictures of their homes.

Texas History

After the Civil War, the United States entered the era of Reconstruction, during which former Confederate States had to meet certain conditions for readmission into the Union. This included recognizing the U. S. constitutional amendments that ended slavery and rewriting their state constitutions. Nine African Americans were delegates to the 1868 Constitutional Convention. One of these delegates, George T. Ruby, was elected to the Texas Senate a year later, becoming the first African American to serve in the legislature. Texas was readmitted to the United States on March 30, 1870.
