elcome to the August edition of “Enjoy Opatija”! Although, August is a great month to enjoy swimming, we prepared again a lot of fun and activities for you. In order to have lots of highlights in your visit, we have special tips and topics made for you. In this month we suggest you to visit a couple of traditional fishermen and captain feasts (p. 11) in Ičići, Lovran or Mošćenička Draga. Fresh fish and live music are very important on the riviera! If you are a fan of Blues music (p. 11) you have found yourself in right place at right time becaouse, in Kastav (p. 6) you can join other music lovers at Kastav Blues festival. Invitation to Volosko goes to art enthusiasts since, that small town, at the end of this month, turns in one big open art gallerie. We also have something for film lovers, Solo positivo film festival (International music documentary film festival) is something you sould not miss by any chance! In the “Kids Corner” (p. 14) once again we have a colorful children’s program and some playfull tipps. M
ein Name ist Vedran Ružić - Musiker und Maler! Meine Reise in die Welt der Malerei wurde mit der Serie von Gemälden „Galeasse und Segel“ im Jahr 2010 zu einer ernsten Angelegenheit, bald gefolgt von einer Periode, in der ich Motive der Kvarner-Bucht malte. Nach einer kurzen schöpferischen Krise im Winter 2013 in einer kalten Wohnung in Volosko, malte ich zuerst eine Katze! Seitdem übertrifft die Zahl meiner Katzengemälde wahrscheinlich die tatsächliche Zahl der Katzen in Volosko! Seit der Veröffentlichung des Bilderbuchs „Der Kater aus Volosko” (Text von Elizabet Jovanović) wurden meine Katzen um die Kvarner-Bucht herum bekannt und eine Anzahl von Kopien geriet in die Hände von Kindern aus deutschsprachigen Ländern, als es ins Deutsche übersetzt wurde. Mein letztes Katzenprojekt war die Veröffentlichung des Bilderbuchs „Morčić“ mit Gedichten von Drago Gervais. Ein besonderes Merkmal dieses Bilderbuch ist, daß es Abbildungen meiner großen Acrylbilder auf Leinwand enthält. Natürlich sind die Katzen aus Volosko nicht die einzigen Motive meiner Bilder. Während des Studiums an der Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Rijeka begann ich an einer Reihe von weiblichen Akten zu arbeiten und nannte sie einfach „Nackte“. Mein Endziel ist es aber Musik und Malerei zu verbinden, darum habe ich vor kurzem versucht, auf verschiedene Weisen Musik auf die Leinwand zu übertragen. Die Kombination dieser beiden Kunstformen schuf eine Reihe von Werken, die ich „Konzertkunst“ nenne. Die meisten meiner Arbeiten sind schwer in Worte zu fassen und sie lassen sich kaum in Standard-Kategorien einstufen, so dass ich Ihnen wärmstens empfehle vor meinem Studio in Volosko eine Pause einzulegen und einen Blick auf meine Arbeit zu werfen.
M
y name is Vedran Ružić - musician and painter! My journey in the world of painting became a serious affair with the series of paintings called Galleass and Sailboats in 2010, followed soon after by a period in which I painted motives of the Kvarner Bay. After a short creative crisis in the winter of 2013, in a cool apartment in Volosko, I made the first painting of a cat! Since then my cat paintings probably outnumbered the actual cats in Volosko! Since the release of “The Cat of Volosko” picture book (text by Elizabet Jovanović) my cats became recognizable around the Kvarner Bay and a number of copies came into the hands of children in the German-speaking countries when it was translated into German (Der Kater aus Volosko). My last “cat” project was the release of the “Morčić” picture book with poems by Drago Gervais. A special feature of this picture book is that all illustrations are reproductions of my large acrylic paintings on canvas. Of course, cats of Volosko are not the only motives of my paintings. During my studies at the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka I started working on a series of female nudes called simply Nudes. My ultimate aim, however, is to connect music and painting, so recently I tried to convey music on canvas in different ways, one of which is a painting on stage during the concert. The combination of these two art forms created a series of works which I entitled Concertual Art. Most of my works are difficult to put into words or classify within the standard categories, so I encourage you to stop by my studio in Volosko and have a look at my work.

Das „Small Room Atelier“ oder „Das Kleine Zimmer“ begann seine Geschichte Anfang des Jahres 2013, als die junge Künstlerin aus Volosko Tanja Prodan, nachdem sie an der Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Rijeka ihren Abschluss machte, die Gelegenheit bekam ihre Arbeit in ihrer kleinen Heimatstadt fortzusetzen. Bald darauf kamen ihre Kollegen und Freunde dazu – zuerst Lorena Žuvić und später drei weiteren Künstler - Bruna Tomšić, Vedran Ružić und Gloria Dragičević. Jeder von ihnen konzentrierte sich auf eine bestimmte Kunstform, die aus Malerei, Mosaik, Skulptur, Szenografie, Kostümentwurf, bis zu Schmuck und Modebekleidung bestand. Das Atelier „Das kleine Zimmer“ ist ein Ort an dem Chaos, Freundschaft und Kreativität die Oberhand hat. Alle Künstler in diesem Atelier freuen sich auf Ihre Ankunft und möchten Ihnen ihre Kunst in einem freundschaftlichen Gespräch vorstellen.
The atelier “small room” started writing its history at the beginning of 2013 when the young artist from Volosko Tanja Prodan, after graduating from the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka, got the opportunity to continue her work in her little hometown. Soon after, she was joined by her colleague and friend Lorena Žuvić and another three artists: Bruna Tomšić, Vedran Ružić and Gloria Dragičević. Each of them focused on a specific art form, encompassing painting, mosaic, sculpture, scenography, costume design, all the way to jewellery and fashion clothes. ls Opatija noch kein mondäner Urlaubsort war, galt Volosko als der Sitz des Verwaltungsbezirkes - ein lebhafter Handelshafen und administratives Zentrum. Diese Relevanz ist Volosko heute verloren gegangen, geblieben ist aber die zauberhafte Anziehungskraft einer malerischen Küstenortschaft, und einer unerschöpflichen Inspirationsquelle für Künstler. Es wurde zum Zufluchtsort für alle, die in den engen Altstadtgassen, bei einer Tasse Kaffee am Ufer im einmaligen Ambiente des Fischerhafens und der Hafenmole eine Oase der Ruhe suchen. Dazu bietet sich vom Ufer in Volosko ein besonderer Ausblick: An dieser Stelle öffnet sich dem Betrachter die gesamte Adria in Richtung Süden… Seit Jahrzehnten präsentiert der internationale Malwettbewerb Mandrać das wertvollste der Kunst – den schöpferischen Akt selbst, der direkt vor den Augen der Besucher und der anderen Künstlerkollegen zur Schau gestellt wird. Es handelt sich dabei um einen „ex tempore“ Malwettbewerb, bei dem Kunstwerke „vor Ort“ entstehen und deren schöpferische Atmosphäre jedes Jahr zahlreiche Künstler nach Volosko lockt. Die Veranstaltung dauert zwei Tage – am ersten Tag malen Kinder im Alter bis zu 14 Jahren, und am zweiten Tag treten ihre erwachsenen Kollegen in zwei Gruppen (Amateure und Profis) auf. Die besten Kunstwerke werden mit wertvollen Preisen prämiert, und die Veranstaltung endet mit einem Konzert im kleinen Hafen von Volosko.
B
efore Opatija became a holiday resort, Volosko was the seat of the district, an important trade port and the area‘s administrative centre. Today Volosko has lost that type of importance, but not its magical appeal as a picturesque fishing village, an inexhaustible source of inspiration to artists, a haven to those searching for peace in the narrow lanes of the old town, or for a cup of coffee on the waterfront, in the unique atmosphere of the harbour. There is something very special about the view of the sea from Volosko‘s waterfront: the whole Adriatic seems to open up towards the south from here… During the last several decades, the Mandrać international painting competition has been presenting the most valuable aspect of art – the creative act itself, which takes place directly in front of visitors and fellow artists. This is an „ex tempore“ painting competition where artwork is created „on the spot“ and which every year attracts numerous artists and art lovers to Volosko. The event lasts two days: the first day is dedicated to children up to the age of 14, and the second day to their older colleagues in amateur and professional categories. The best works win valuable awards, and the event ends with a concert in Volosko’s small and picturesque harbour.

Solo Positivo Film Festival 01.
I
n diesem Jahr stellt das Solo Positivo Film Festival in Opatija sechs Tage lang Filme, Musik und zahlreiche Veranstaltungen innerhalb des Festivals vor. Das Bewerbungsverfahren für die Filmeinreichungen für das 7. Solo Positivo Film Festival ist nun beendet, und das vollständige Programm wird in Kürze auf der offiziellen Webseite des Festivals veröffentlicht und verfügbar sein. Auch dieses Jahr kündigte die Festivalleitung eine reiche Programmvielfalt an – dieses Mal mit dem Partnerland Italien. Ab diesem Jahr wird ein Querschnitt aller regionalen Leistungen im Rahmen des Programms „Regio‘n ‚Roll“ gezeigt, während im retrospektiven Programm Filme des bekannten britischen Regisseurs Julien Temple vorgestellt werden.

Diese Veranstaltung wird auch in diesem Jahr sicherlich einen Hauch von Glamour in das Kulturleben unseres Landes zaubern. Den Verehrern der siebten Kunst bietet dieser Event ein weiteres Vergnügen in der unvergesslichen Welt von Film und Musik.
T
he Kastav Summer of Culture Festival takes place during June and August at various sites of the town - stage and music performances on Crekvina, the Parish Church of St. Helena the Crusader and Municipal Loggia; there are exhibitions in Lokvina square and The Holy Trinity gallery, as well. It was first featured in 1992 and is held annually ever since. The Guitar Festival has been held annually since 1997 and is remarkable for its quality and its great attendances. It features leading guitar players from Croatia and all over the world. The music and poetry event locally called Spinčići va muzike i domaćoj besede takes place on the last day in July as a part of the Kastav Summer of Culture Festival. The event is hosted by members of the Spinčići Music Association and the programme usually ends in mass partying until dawn. Vela umjetnička radionica - The Big Art Workshop - has been a part of the Kastav Summer of Culture since 2003. It is a one-day prize competition and exhibition event that takes place in the streets and squares of Kastav. Visual artists from Croatia and abroad exhibit their art and compete for the prizes in four different categories; painting-graphics-drawing, sculpture-design-applied art, photography and extempore works from one of the art forms.The closing days of
the Kastav Summer of Culture were marked in the past few years by the well-attended Čansonfest - a chanson song festival with performances in the čakavian dialect. The most prominent Croatian singers respond with pleasure to appear on the festival. Come along and get to know some Croatian culture!

Beach Bar 69 - Lovran
Da der August der Monat ist, in dem wir versuchen jede Minute unserer Zeit der Erholung am Strand zu widmen, haben wir uns entschieden, einen Ort zu finden, wo man gemütlich in der Sonne liegen, gut essen und am Abend zu Cocktail Spaß haben kann. Das ist die Strandbar 69 - am Hauptstrand in Lovran, wo alles für eine komfortable Erholung in der Sonne (Liegestühle, Sonnenschirme ...) bereit steht. Dazu bietet ein Grill-Restaurant sowohl köstliche Gerichte vom Grill, als auch leichte Häppchen, wie Sommersalate und eine große Auswahl an Eiscreme mit der man sich am Ende den Abend versüßen kann – da wird auch die Musik lauter und die Limonade mit feinen Cocktails ersetzt – die Beach-Party kann beginnen! Since August is the month in which we are trying to spend every minute of our time relaxing on the beach, we decided to find a place where you can enjoy lying in the sun, eating well and having fun in the evening cocktail parties. Beach bar 69 is located right on the main beach in Lovran and it offers all the facilities needed for a comfortable rest in the sun (deck-chairs, umbrellas ...) as well as a grill restaurant where you treat yourself to delicious dishes straight from the grill, light summer salads and, as the last sweet touch, choose from a selection of ice creams. In the evening, the music gets louder and the lemonade is replaced with fine cocktails. The beach party can begin!

Er befindet sich im einem Jahrhunderte alten barocken Gebäude auf dem Platz St. Juraj in Lovran, wo das berühmte Relief „Mustaćon“ auf der Fassade des Gebäudes über den Köpfen der Passanten lächelt. Beginning with the last year the Nona Tonica store in Lovran is open. It is situated in a baroque building several centuries old on the Square St. Juraj in Lovran. The famous relief Mustaćon smiles down on the passers-by from its façade. on der Welt etwas abgesondert” lockt die Ortschaft schon jahrzehntelang Touristen, neugierige Besucher, Wochenendler, Wanderer, Sportler, Künstler und Naturfreunde an. Durch seine autochthone mediterrane Architektur, die Traditionen der Küstenlandschaft, den Fischfang und die eigene Geschichte erobert sie die Herzen aller zufällig oder gezielt gekommenen Besucher. Falls Sie ein Liebhaber der Geschichte sind, dann begeben Sie sich nach Mošćenice und Brseč, zwei auf Felsen gelegene mittelalterliche Städtchen; das erste auf 178 m über dem Meer (753 Treppen) und das andere auf einem 157 m hohen Felsen über den Wellen der Kvarnerbucht. Die Gemeinde von Mošćenička Draga erstreckt sich von Medveja bis Zagore auf einer Länge von 16 Kilometern. Sie umfasst 7 Kieselstrände und eine ganze Reihe von Wald- und Bergwanderwegen. Die Gegend ist ausgesprochen gebirgig und erstreckt sich auf 63 km² mit einer Oberfläche von 4396 ha. Ein Teil ihres Gebietes gehört zum Naturpark Učka. Die Bevölkerungszahl beträgt kaum 1700 Einwohner. Während des Spazierganges - auf dem Lungomare - zum Strand des Heiligen Johannes (Sveti Ivan) werden in unserem Innern gewiss romantische Gefühle wach und am ganzen Weg entlang
des Meeres begleitet uns das Geräusch des Meeres und die Düfte der aromatischen Mittelmeerpflanzen. Der Höhepunkt der Promenade ist die Villa Zagreb –ursprünglich Villa Ossoinack - gefolgt von weiteren bezaubernden alten Villen. Die Altstadt von Mošćenička Draga mit ihren dicht nebeneinander liegenden Häusern und engen Gassen liegt am steilen Hang über dem Meer und an einem bezaubernden kleinen Fischerhafen mit Fischer- und Ruderbooten. In den Sommermonaten wird der Hafen von Touristen zu einer kleinen Marina umgewandelt. Mošćenička Draga ist eigentlich als kleiner Fischerhafen der Stadt Mošćenice entstanden und wird in
alten aufbewahrten Schriften als die Ortschaft „am Hafen bei der Heiligen Marina“ erwähnt, da sich im Ortszentrum auch die Kirche der Heiligen Marina befindet. Wir empfehlen Ihnen, mit einem Boot aus Draga abzufahren, damit Sie während einer langsamen und angenehmen Fahrt einen Blick auf die felsige Küste und die Vegetation genießen können. Legen Sie im Hafen von Kraj - nur 2 km von M. Draga entfernt - an und steigen Sie zu Fuß bis zum Dorf hinauf. Zwischen Mošćenička Draga und Brseč befinden sich zwei größere Strände – Uboka und Jelenšćica. Diese Strände sind entweder zu Fuß oder mit dem Boot zu erreichen. Von der Hauptstraße Rijeka- Pula gibt es Pfade, die zu den Stränden führen.

omewhat ‘isolated from the world’, for many years M. Draga has been luring tourists, inquisitive people, weekenders, walkers, sportsmen, artists and nature lovers. It steals the hearts all of its visitors and chance travellers with its authentic Mediterranean architecture, the tradition of Primorje (the North coast of Croatia), fishing, and its history. If you are a history lover, then you must visit Mošćenice and Brseč, two medieval towns situated on high cliffs, Mošćenice at the altitude of 178 m (753 steps), and Brseč at the altitude of 157 m above the bay of Kvarner. The Community of Mošćenička Draga stretches from Cesara cove to Stupova cove situated at the foot of the village of Zagorje. There are 7 pebbled beaches and numerous paths through the woods and through the mountains. The land is extremely hilly and it stretches on the area of 63 square kilometers, covering the surface of 4,396 hectares. Its territory goes deeply into Učka Nature Park. The population barely exceeds the number 1 700. The promenade along the seacoast (lungo mare) towards Sv. Ivan Beach (St. John Beach) makes you feel very romantic, and all along the way you can hear the murmur of the sea and smell the scent of Mediterranean herbs. The high light of that promenade is Villa Zagreb (ex. Villa Ossoinak), and there are also a number of charming villas along the way to St. Ivan Beach, which are equally beautiful. The old town of Mošćenička Draga with its clustered houses and its ravines stretches steeply all the way to the sea. In ist foundation there is a beautiful small port with fishing boats,small boats, and in summer there is a mini-marina for the tourists’ vessels. Mošćenička Draga developed from a little harbour serving the town of Mošćenice, and recorded in the documents about the settlement ‘in the port near Sv. Marina (St. Marina)’, which is also the church in the middle of the village. We suggest taking a boat from Draga in order to enjoy the rocky coastal scenery and the vegetation while sailing along the coast. You can anchor your boat in the little port of Kraj (just 2 kilometers from M. Draga) and walk up to the village. Between Mošćenička Draga and Brseč there are two rather bigger beaches, Uboka and Jelenšćica. You can get there by boat or on foot if you take one of the paths leading there from the main road Rijeka – Pula.

ie es sich für eine kinderfreundliche Stadt gehört, hängt im Zentrum von Opatija eine Informationstafel, die 31 Kinderspielplätze in Opatija und Umgebung zeigt, mit Erklärungen in Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch, Deutsch und Kroatisch. Opatija wurde damit zur ersten Stadt in Kroatien mit einer Landkarte mit Kinderspielplätzen - in der Tat ein wahrer Führer durch 31 Spielplätze auf der Stadtkarte mit kurzen Beschreibungen, Fotos und dem Verhaltenskodex. Zur Karte sind auf der Tafel auch Informationen über die kinderfreundliche Stadt Opatija und den Kinderstadtrat zu finden, auf dessen Initiative die Spielplatzkarte entworfen wurde. Sommeraktivitäten für Kinder gibt es in Opatija schon seit Jahren. Das Ziel dieser Aktivitäten ist das Kinder zusammen kommen, Spaß haben und viel Zeit am Strand verbringen können, beginnend mit dem letzten bis zum ersten Tag des neuen Schuljahres. Die Aktivitäten sind für Kinder im Vorschulalter und im Schulalter gedacht. Kinder können schon ab 7.00 bis 16.30 Uhr betreut werden. Während ihres Aufenthalts werden viele kreative, Unterhaltungsund Bildungs-Workshops organisiert, zusätzlich zu den sportlichen Aktivitäten, Gesellschaftsspielen und Filmen.

n the very centre of Opatija, as befits the children-friendly city, the information board with a map of 31 children’s playgrounds in Opatija and its surroundings was erected and written in English, French, Italian, German and Croatian language. Opatija thus became the first city in Croatia with a map of children’s playgrounds – in effect a guide through 31 playgrounds drawn on the city map with a brief description, photographs and code of conduct. Along with the map, the information board contains also information about the children-friendly city of Opatija and the Children’s City Council on whose initiative the map of playgrounds was made. Summer activities in Opatija´s children society have been held for years. Activities are organized for socializing, having fun and spending time at the beach from the last day of the school year, until the beginning of the next school year. Activities are planned for children of pre-school and school age. Children may come as early as 7:00 am and are being taken care of until 4:30 pm. During their stay, many creative, entertainment and educational workshops are organized, in addition to sports activities, social games and watching movies.
