Vistoso Cyclists membership is only $15/year, hard to believe, given we are one of the best cycling clubs for seniors in the nation. Aside from the rides, our members enjoy our very useful website, including a searchable member directory, club classifieds, online ride schedule, cycling resources and more.

We offer several hundred scheduled rides year-round, among four different ride subgroups, from 20-60+ miles, to cafe destinations within Tucson and nearby towns, utilizing both pathways and roadways. Occasional away rides are offered as well. Our cafe stops offer coffee and conversation, greatly enjoyed by our members.

The club has e-bike, mountain biking, and Women on Wheels subgroups. There’s also our monthly club newsletter email.

All schedules can be found within the excellent member area of our website. We also host social events and support both the Interfaith Community Services Food Bank and Wheels for Kids. For more information or to join, visit our website.

Miles, smiles and tailwinds.

Technically, the Billiards Room is reserved for members only, Monday-Friday, Noon-4 PM; however, if there are open tables, any resident can play.

Our club championship has reached the final pairing. Jim Baker will be playing Mike Connoy to determine our 2021 champion.

The red-tailed hawk is one of several large hawks that can be seen here in SCOV. This stocky hawk, with a wingspan of 49 inches, is resident in almost all of the U.S.A.; however, the Western population is the most variable in looks, ranging from light to dark morphs (color variations). Unlike the Harris hawk, it hunts solo, but like them, helps thin out our rodent population.

All SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds here in Arizona. Below are listed upcoming bird outings. If you are interested in going on any of these, contact the trip coordinator for details at least three

days in advance and ask to be added to our mailing list.

Thursday, February 3, Cienega Preserve, Nancy Bern, lanbern@hotmail.com

Tuesday, February 8, Reid Park, Mona Connoy, mjconnoy@gmail.com

Thursday, February 17, TBD (local), Barbara Gates, bgates@udel.edu

Dear gun enthusiasts: Covid and other illnesses have kept us from regular meetings; however, we need to recruit and elect new officers to keep our club alive. If we can find a suitable location, we will meet in February. Contact Bill Snead to volunteer ASAP.

The SCOV Hiking Club has seven new hiking guides this year. Their hikes are included in the February schedule. With our annual spring picnic set for February 22, there is still time for members who have paid their dues (still only $7) to complete hikes toward their next mileage patch. Oracle State Park will be the site of this year’s picnic, where we hike, eat, talk with fellow hikers and present mileage awards. See our website for more details. Hello fun. Welcome men and women. No experience necessary. Bring your own equipment. Easy to learn. The more you play, the better you get. Did you know seniors 70 and older pitch from a shorter distance with less effort and more accuracy? The shorter distance also makes the game more fun for women. YouTube has several videos of everything related to horseshoes. Check it out.

Good exercise, good people and friendly competition.

Pickleball Pres. Tony Masterjohn tmasterjohn15@gmail.com VP Training Doug Brown wizisland@comcast.net Sun.-Sat., 8 AM-9 PM www.scovpb.org

Moon rising over the Catalina Mountains

If you are ever in the vicinity of the pickleball courts Monday, Wednesday or Saturday evenings, you will observe several things. The lights are on and there are women playing who are a having a whole lot of fun. The camaraderie and laughter which is shared by these women, is just what the doctor ordered. Not only do these women have frequent socials with cookies, hot chocolate and pizza, they have an excuse to have fellowship. They also raised $360 for Youth On Their Own this past Christmas. What is most exciting is they experience beautiful sunsets and moonrises. The group was formed in 2013 by Bonnie Baird, who not only saw a need for just women to play causal pickleball, but also mentored those who are just learning the game. Check the schedule for starting times or show up around 5 PM.
