Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Modelers love to share the fruits of their labors with the families who come to our four open houses each year as these folks did in December. But, visitors are welcome to come in any time we’re working in the club workroom in the Artisan Center. The history of the prototypes of the models we build is important to us. It adds to our appreciation of the miniature world we are creating and leads to more accurate representations. Presentations at our monthly meetings in Catalina Vista help us learn more about the planes, cars, boats, buildings and trains we build. On February 11, club member Bruce Dewald (USN retired) will talk about the role of the B-24 Liberator (PB4Y-1) in naval combat during WWII. All are invited to join us. This 45-minute talk will begin at 9 AM.

Sculpture Pres. Laurie Lichaa 520-991-9953 Mon., 9 AM-5 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio
The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in the Art Studio in Catalina Vista. If you are interested in becoming a member of our club or learning more about what we do, please stop in on Monday mornings or contact Laurie Lichaa, president. If you would like to see some of our work, we have sculptures in the display cases in Catalina Vista and the SCOV Library. When a sculpture is close to being finished, the piece is often checked by the artist for imperfections. In the picture above, Janet Szumlas is using a flashlight to inspect her sculpture. Imperfections such as air bubbles, fingerprints, small cracks, etc., can be detected by viewing the piece in various lights or turning the piece upside down or side to side. One trick that sculptors use to look for symmetry is to place a mirror next to the work to compare one side of the piece to the other simultaneously. Seniors for Kids Co-Pres. Calling all crafters, quilters, woodworkers, toymakers and multi-talented adults that just love to bring joy to children.
Seniors for Kids works to supply the needs of children and to keep smiles on their faces. We believe that “Living is Giving and Giving is Living.” For all the joy that we are able to give to the children we serve, we feel that in return, we receive the ‘busy..ness’ that keeps us moving no matter how tired we feel at times. This chance to give gets us out of our beds and houses daily and gives us the meaning we all need in our lives. When we think about the years we have just been through, we all need something to put our lives in order and to help those who have not had all that we in SCOV are blessed with. If you are looking for such a place, come join us and enjoy the friendliness that abounds in our group. We definitely have a use for your talents and friendship, and we welcome you to come and get involved.

The quilters of Casa Amigas are an amazing group of women who love to quilt but have run out of quilts to make for friends and relatives. Making quilts for babies and children is what they love to do now. We provide many quilts to several organizations who see that their clients get a lovely homemade quilt to call their own. Much love, time and effort goes into these quilts, and the feedback we receive makes it all worthwhile. If you are interested in joining Casa Amigas to fulfill your quilting creative juices, come in on Monday or Thursday mornings to see what this group in the back room is all about. Even if you want to expand your quilting skills and learn new techniques, this is the place to be. Our quilters are happy to share their expertise.
Cheer Bears
Pat Norton 480-993-8762 panpan9803@yahoo.com Wed., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing
We are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies, stuffing them with love, and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Our shelves are filling fast and happy faces are smiling at each other as they work. It is good to have people in the room and around the table again.
If, in your sorting and cleaning out, you find you have some polyester fiberfill or flannel pieces, we are in need of the fill to plump up the tummies and flannel to make the bodies of the bears. Donations are always accepted. Thank you all for your support.
Thank you to Seniors for Kids for continuing to sponsor our bear making.

If you have a dog or cat, you probably already have a comfy bed for them. It’s cold outside, and we want to provide comfy beds for the Humane Society animals waiting for their adoption. We create all sizes of colorful pet beds using washable fabric scraps and polyester fiberfill. We can always use more large pieces of fabric and more volunteers. We do have a good time with plenty of conversation while we work, so why not join us some Tuesday afternoon in the Sewing Room? We look forward to seeing our winter residents return.

Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts

If you are interested in being part of our group, stop by the Sewing Room on Tuesday mornings or contact Coni Arseneau or Carrie Wiley. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People interested in other arts using fiber are invited and welcome to join our group.
The photo is a project completed by Carrie Wiley. She used a technique for rug hooking referred to as “Proddy.” Proddy is an old-fashioned British variation on rug hooking. The proddy tool in the lower right in the picture is used to push cut pieces of wool fabric through the foundation backing which makes a three-dimensional design. Here, Carrie used traditional rug hooking for the base of the project and Proddy to give the 3D effect of the holiday flowers. An entire rug can be made just by using the proddy technique.

The featured artist for this month is Carolyn Scono Shisler. She has been a member of the club since 2016 and enjoys working with our club’s creative members for inspiration and support. Her featured art is a malachite gem sterling prong set pendant. The malachite is one of her favorite stones, a pear-shaped gem with intense green colors of a springtime pine. The stone is mounted in a custom prong setting handcrafted in sterling. The setting is open in the back and shows off the circular lines and gradient shades of green. You’ll find this gem in the window outside our club.
SCOV residents interested in joining our club are invited to speak to a monitor to schedule observation time and one-on-one training. Mini workshops will be offered to members in the coming months.

All of us in the studio want to give Jo Anne Bowman a big thank you for being our president for many years. Congratulations to Dan Stasi, who is our new president. We appreciate both of you. Now that we are well into 2022, have you been thinking about joining a new club? May we suggest checking out the Stained/Fused Glass Club and the endless possibilities presented when working with glass. We provide the proper equipment and safety in place for a great experience. We offer monitors Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We also offer training by experienced people. These people are friendly and willing to help, whether you are fusing or creating something wonderful with stained glass. There is always a great enthusiasm within our club to welcome any new member. Although it is commonly assumed that woodworking is strictly a man’s hobby, nothing can be further from the truth. The SCOV Wood Shop has a number of female club members that love the opportunity to be creative with wood. Today’s featured woodworker is Karen Curry. Karen is a registered nurse and has been a resident of SCOV for the past several years. A Wood Shop monitor, she was recently elected as the 2022 Woodworking Club vice president. Karen’s sunny disposition is always appreciated and her skill with the scroll saw is unmatched. SCOV residents of all genders will find a welcoming home at our community woodshop. A new member orientation is held at the Wood Shop the first Wednesday of each month at 4 PM. Call Bill Norton at 480-980-5493 for further instructions. For questions or more information, please visit the website or call an officer.
