ILR - Institute of Learning in Retirement Pres. Mary Lee Fitzgerald fitzgerald.marylee@gmail.com www.suncityilr.com

There are more than 600 Institutes for Learning in Retirement (ILR) around the country, often associated with a college or university. SCOV’s ILR was founded 20 years ago by Gene and Lei Lane Bammel after they had spent several years driving down to the UArizona for SAGE classes (Senior Achievement through Growth). ILR courses in both winter and fall provide on-site learning opportunities with your neighbors at a modest price. Check our website for information about membership. Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-331-1092 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10 AM-Noon, WC1, Zoom meetings first Mon. of the month

Club member Esther Berlot’s scathing poem conveys an important lesson: It is not only morally superior, but practically more effective, to praise and encourage before suggesting improvements. Our group has successfully followed those principles for over 20 years, creating a safe and nurturing environment that continues to foster friendships as we aid and encourage one another to better success in our poetic endeavors. Kindness and respect are bywords that we follow, and we’re always glad to welcome new members. Inquisition

A poet sits in the docket. / A jutting jaw leans forward / listening to a monsoon / of slashed phrases.

Hands flail like birds / pecking at ramblings, / demanding perfection.

The incoming verbal storm / rips up roots. / Revised phrases, grammar, spelling and punctuation / leave clauses to dangle in limbo.

After storm subsides, / a shattered ego hides in arrogance / to defend her stance.

The inquisition has silenced / a poet’s lyrical voice.

March is Pet Poison Prevention Month. One of the most common causes of toxins in pets is over-the-counter and prescription medications. Since we reside in a 55+ community, many of us are taking a mix of medications and supplements for various health issues. Even small quantities can be dangerous for our pets. Please make sure that your meds are kept out of reach and if you do drop any on the floor, pick them up immediately. If you do suspect your pet ingested something harmful, call the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661.

Our next club meeting is Thursday, March 17. Theresa Gonzalez, DVM, will be giving a presentation on “Holistic Pet Care.”

Havurah Pres. Barbara Hamm 928-210-4735 www.havurahscov.org

This year, the Jewish holiday of Purim falls on March 17, celebrating Queen Esther’s thwarting of Haman’s plans to destroy the Jews in the 5th century BCE. It is normally a raucous holiday, when people dress in costume, eat delicious pastries called hamantaschen, and thoroughly enjoy themselves. This year Happy Purim! Purim festivities will be subdued due to Covid. Hopefully, some of us might want to celebrate in our homes with friends and family. Havurah group activities remain canceled, although we hope to have our yearly installation of new officers and ice cream social on Monday, March 21. Check our website for updates. Zoom Book Group meetings continue. We will discuss The Book of Lost Names by Kristen Hamel on Tuesday, March 8, 3:30 PM. Join us.

L-r: Jack and Sally Evert, Allan Mashburn and Charlotte and Bob Landis enjoying French bistro cuisine

This club provides an enjoyable social evening getting to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking and eating interesting food. Our monthly (DecemberMarch) themed dinners in individual members’ homes provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g., German) or get creative with more ambiguous themes (e.g., food in

songs). Since everyone brings part of the meal, it’s not a huge effort for the hosts. We also have several catered/ restaurant events each year, as well as an occasional potluck. Our January dinner theme was French Bistro. Visit our website to see more photos and details. Contact an officer for more information. Note: Proof of Covid vaccination is required to attend club activities.
