There are more than 600 Institutes for Learning in Retirement (ILR) around the country, often associated with a college or university. SCOV’s ILR was founded 20 years ago by Gene and Lei Lane Bammel after they had spent several years driving down to the UArizona for SAGE classes (Senior Achievement through Growth). ILR courses in both winter and fall provide on-site learning opportunities with your neighbors at a modest price. Check our website for information about membership.

Club member Esther Berlot’s scathing poem conveys an important lesson: It is not only morally superior, but practically more effective, to praise and encourage before suggesting improvements. Our group has successfully followed those principles for over 20 years, creating a safe and nurturing environment that continues to foster friendships as we aid and encourage one another to better success in our poetic endeavors. Kindness and respect are bywords that we follow, and we’re always glad to welcome new members. Inquisition A poet sits in the docket. / A jutting jaw leans forward / listening to a monsoon / of slashed phrases. Hands flail like birds / pecking at ramblings, / demanding perfection. The incoming verbal storm / rips up roots. / Revised phrases, grammar, spelling and punctuation / leave clauses to dangle in limbo. After storm subsides, / a shattered ego hides in arrogance / to defend her stance. The inquisition has silenced / a poet’s lyrical voice.
