Don’t Feel Like the Lone Ranger! by Ronna Heinig As we commemorate our second anniversary of the Covid pandemic, I feel compelled to take a serious look at how far we have come. In the beginning, like many others, I saw this as nothing more than the flu, but as people got sick and died, I quickly reversed my position and started taking COVID seriously. As I enjoyed my quarter pounder with cheese while sitting in my car, my spirits were lifted with the certainty that surely, soon a vaccine would be on the way and save us all. I learned that wearing a mask was primarily to protect others from me, but I had to hope that somehow, masking up also provided some protection for me from everybody else. January 2021, thank goodness, we did get the vaccine, but apparently not everyone shared my excitement at the chance of getting inoculated and ending this pandemic, so the mask debate continues. Today I have a veritable buffet of masks…surgical, cloth, a gaiter with the MSU logo on it, even one with vents and filters. I’m pretty sure most of you can identify with me on this. But what have I learned? The EPA has researched masks and the percentage of Covid-size particles they filter out, and this is what I found. My MSU gaiter is the worst, filtering only 38% of particles. The cotton mask, 49%; the “surgical” mask, 60%; but the best mask to wear to protect myself is the N95 or KN95 at 80%-95% filtration. So, as we hopefully transition from the pandemic and learn to live with the Covid virus, I am being proactive and, when necessary, protecting myself with my KN95 mask. I suggest following the CDC pages (https://bit.ly/3GgD87H or https://bit.ly/3HBzve5). Since I am vaccinated and boosted, my risk is markedly lower for contracting Covid, being hospitalized or dying from the virus. When you see the statistics by age and vaccination status, the picture that is painted is markedly different than the scary stuff you hear on the news. We’ve learned a lot in the last two years. Get vaccinated, wear a KN95 mask in risky situations, and we don’t have to rely on others to keep us safe.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Here is to the Horn Honkers of Sun City Oro Valley A few times each week, one particular resident drives past my office window in his golf cart and honks his horn. Sometimes I’m able to get to my door in time to open it and exchange greetings with this wonderful man. More often than not, I’m busy or too slow to catch him before he is on his way to golf. Don, that is his name, always honks even though I don’t always make it to the door. He will never know how that lifts and brightens my spirit for the day. His kind actions caused me to stop and ponder, as I contemplated this month’s Tipster article, how many of these acts of kindness he and others in the community perform each and every day for their neighbors and the community. Don and those like him in the community go about their daily activities never asking for recognition for doing good, they just do it. They are the unsung heroes of Sun City Oro Valley. So this short but sweet article is in recognition of all those residents who honk their horn, so to speak, in our community. Whether it is checking on a neighbor, cooking a meal for someone who is sick, calling someone just to visit or serving in a million other ways, my hat is off to you, and you all deserve a standing ovation. You are a major part of what makes this community great. Thank you and please never stop.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! Monitoring Wildlife in Our Area by Marsha Dean

n 2006, Pima County voters approved a $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan to address comprehensive transportation improvements across the region. During the planning process, information about the effect of transportation activity on wildlife was presented by the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection (CSDP). Included in the package was $45 million to protect and enhance wildlife linkages. Among the projects to receive funding, the Arizona Department of Transportation received $11 million to construct two wildlife crossing structures (one overpass and one underThe yellow area shows nearby wildlife corridors between the Catalina pass) along and Tortolita Mountain ranges. The top pin is the overpass and the State Route bottom pin shows the location of the underpass. Fencing is used to 77 (Oracle Road) as funnel wildlife toward the passes. Courtesy CSDP part of their project to widen the road from four to six lanes. These structures were completed in 2016, enabling local wildlife to cross safely over and under the busy roadway, improving the health and safety of the wildlife populations as well as reducing risk to motorists from swerving or hitting animals in the roadway. The overpass and underpass have cameras placed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The surrounding areas leading up to both sides of the passes have cameras that have been placed by CSDP. A number of SCOV residents volunteer with CSDP to assist with monitoring wildlife in our area. home (see SCOV Resident, page 13). Desert Identifiers use their home computers to review the photos captured by the cameras. They identify the wildlife in the photos, which helps the Coalition track the Oro Valley Wildlife Crossings Project that reports the following information: • There are 20 active cameras divided equally east and west of the highway. Many recorded species include birds. • Mule deer activity increased west of the highway after construction of the crossings and has been steadily increasing, with a short pause after construction of the Big Wash multi-use trail. • A female mountain lion used the underpass coming from Big Wash last summer, and cameras photographed her continuing to move northeast into Catalina State Park. Jessica Moreno, Conservation Science Director for CSDP, reports that the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation provided funds to replace SCOV resident Jack Welch observed a five cameras in the Big Wash, which mountain lion in his backyard in were lost due to flooding. Eventually, it is hoped that big horn sheep will return to the Tortolita Mountains. As the current RTA bond expires in the near future, it is hoped that similar wildlife linkages will be included in the next regional plan. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Home Inspection If you’re getting ready to sell your home or thinking about selling, you need to have an inspection of the exterior of your property by the Association. This can happen in three ways: courtesy inspection, listing inspection and escrow inspection. Each inspection is handled a bit differently, so this information is to make you aware of the differences. All inspections look at the entire exterior of the home and property for violations. The courtesy inspection is done at your request. The Association inspector comes to the home, conducts the inspection, and then turns over the findings to you. Any violations found during this inspection are not recorded against the home. This provides an opportunity to correct violations prior to listing your home. The listing inspection is requested by either you, the owner, or your realtor at the time of listing and is good for a 90-day period. Violations found during this inspection are not recorded against the home but are submitted to the title company in a mandatory compliance inspection report when the home enters escrow. Both the seller and buyer receive a copy of this report. Violations listed here may be negotiated as to who will resolve them during the resale process, either the owner or the buyer. If the buyer agrees to resolve a violation, a form is completed indicating as such. The Association follows up on the violation(s) 30 days after close of escrow. If the violation still exists, it is then entered against the home, and the violation resolution process begins with the Association. The last inspection is the escrow inspection. This takes place if a listing inspection was not requested. Violations found during this inspection are submitted directly to the title company, and both seller and buyer receive a copy of the report. The disadvantage of the listing inspection is that both seller and buyer are made aware of the violations after resale negotiations are completed. There is no chance to resolve the violations prior to entering a contract for purchase. If the violations have not been corrected when the home is re-inspected after close of escrow, the violation resolution process will begin, and the new owner inherits the existing violations. You may want to consider the benefit of the courtesy inspection to avoid surprises during the busy time of listing and selling your home. It is a seller’s market out there. As of February 10, 2022, there were 15 homes on the market, and the average time for a home to be on the market was 12 days (YTD) and the cost per square foot was $267 (YTD). The revised Development Standards and Board Policy ARC-006 can be found on our website at www.suncityorovalley.com > Members > Documents. You may also pick up copies at the Welcome Center. Board Policy ARC-006 explains the submittal procedures that are necessary if you are contemplating building a room addition or a patio cover. It is important that you know the model name of your house as you reference this policy, so you can ascertain whether the footprint of your house will be impacted by your project. You will meet the qualifications for either a Prequalified Expansion Submittal procedure or Major Home Expansion Submittal procedure. Each has a different process. The Library will host two author events this month. Chris Enss, Bill Markley and Phil Mills will discuss their numerous books on the legendary West on Wednesday, March 9, 10 AM, and JA Jance will speak about her newly-released book, Nothing to Lose on Thursday, March 10, 1 PM. Authors will sign books after both events. These are ticketed events. Tickets will be available in the Library. The Tucson Festival of Books returns this year. This incredible event takes place on the University of Arizona campus March 12 and 13. The Friends of the Library (FOL) plans to run a bus from SCOV to the campus on Sunday, March 13. See Coming Events, March 1 and 2, on page 12 for ticket information. A huge thank you to the Sun City Vistoso Foundation for providing a grant to the Library for large-print books. We are receiving many requests from patrons for this collection. This grant will fund almost 100 new large-print books from best-selling authors over the next year. FOL members, mark your calendar for the annual FOL Great Views event, scheduled for Monday, April 4. Garry Buck will offer insight on, and play trailers for over 20 movies, all available in our Library or through online streaming services. “This Week in SCOV” will have more information and ticket availability.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Stretching Stretching helps maintain flexibility. It is often overlooked in youth, when muscles are healthier. But aging leads to a loss of flexibility in the muscles and tendons. Muscles shorten and don’t function properly. That increases the risk for muscle cramps and pain, muscle damage, strains, joint pain and falling, making it tough to get through daily activities, such as bending down to tie your shoes. Likewise, stretching the muscles routinely makes them longer and more flexible, which increases your range of motion and reduces pain and the risk for injury. Aim for a program of stretching every day or at least three or four times per week. Warm up your muscles first, with a few minutes of dynamic stretches–repetitive motion such as marching in place or arm circles. That gets blood and oxygen to muscles and makes them amenable to change. Then perform static stretches (holding a stretch position for up to 60 seconds) for the calves, the hamstrings, hip flexors, quadriceps and the muscles of the shoulders, neck and lower back. However, don’t push a stretch into the painful range. That tightens the muscle and is counterproductive. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Are you a new resident or have you moved within SCOV? I use the monthly SCOV Resale Report to update the directory database. Those who have sold their homes are removed from the database, and the new owners are unlisted by default. This includes those who move within SCOV. Why? Many people own more than one house here. Some of these multiples are temporary while the owner buys a new house and sells the old one. Others are permanent and used as rentals. And others are bought to rehab and flip. Thus, all new owners are unlisted by default. To add or update your information, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. You can choose to have certain information unlisted in the paper phone book and/or online.

Spring is right around the corner, and here are spring cleaning reminders concerning personal yards: • Trees must be trimmed up at least seven feet over sidewalks and not block visibility of stop signs. • Plants should not extend out over sidewalks, and frost damaged parts of shrubs and trees should be cut off and removed. • Cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt in the street are the responsibility of homeowners to keep weed-free. • Maximum height of hedges, is three feet, six inches (3’6”) in the front yard area within twenty feet (20’) of the front property line or six feet (6’) in the side or rear yard areas. • Shrubs near the entrance of a driveway should be cut to less than 42” in height so as not to block visibility of vehicles and walkers. • Make sure your house number is visible from the street and that all lights in the fixture are lit, so it can be seen at night. • Outside light bulbs are not to exceed 250 lumens per Oro Valley regulations. We’re excited this month as the season comes into full bloom. You will see the Bermuda grass start to green up on the golf course. As a reminder, the decision to not overseed was for the long-term health of the golf course. The decision was made considering the advantages and disadvantages of playability. It has provided the opportunity to accomplish many projects with the extra time we wouldn’t normally have. Thank you for understanding how important it is for the golf course. The golf course condition has improved over the last few years, and will continue to improve. Ultimately, the decision not to overseed the golf course will have long-term agronomic benefits. Golfers and non-golfers alike, Chip & Putt league is back. Join the fun on Thursdays at 4 PM. The entry fee is $15 pp, which includes golf, dinner and prizes. The Cure for Cancer event is Sunday, March 13. The golf course will be dedicated to the tournament that day. If you have not already donated or registered to participate, please do so. March usually is when the weather begins to warm up in Tucson. That is important this year because it means the Bermuda grass will start to green up on the golf course. It takes weeks for the grass to become a uniform green color in the fairways and roughs, but starting the process to break dormancy will be a welcome sight. During January, the roughs and fairways were sprayed with herbicides to remove any existing weeds, while also preventing future weeds in the spring and early summer. This was one of the big reasons for not overseeding this year. The Poa Annua that appears every spring in overseeded fairways was also removed as part of this application. Over the next several years, the fairways and approaches will have fewer weeds throughout the overseed season leaving a much cleaner appearance. The decision has already been made concerning overseeding this fall. The fairways, approaches, driving range tee, short-game area fairway and tee boxes that transitioned well will be overseeded starting September 19. The golf course will reopen on October 10, followed by the usual two weeks of cart-path-only restriction for golf carts to allow the fairways to dry out. The plan moving forward in regard to overseeding will be following the USGA recommendation of not overseeding every 5 to 10 years for the health of the turf. Based on this recommendation, the next time the golf course will not be overseeded is 2030, after eight years of consecutive overseeding.

Gay Russell is one of the volunteers from SCOV who participate in the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection wildlife monitoring program. “I am not able to physically tramp around in the desert, but I volunteer as a “Desert Identifier,” someone who is sent the photo files from the chips on the motion-sensitive cameras mounted in the washes, and then goes through the photos, one by one, and identifies the animals. Records are kept of the animals sited on camera. We count the numbers in each scene. Each camera chip is examined by two volunteers and then the record totals are kept by the Coalition headquarters. It is fun to see all the different animals that live in the area. Seeing that these animals live around us and they should be enjoyed and protected is important to me. Without something like the Coalition and its volunteers, we would begin to lose some of our native animals. We need to respect that the animals also live here and protect their safe passage from place to place.” –Gay Russell

One hundred years later, the count of farm families is 3.4 million, 10% of what it was a century earlier. They now comprise just 1% of Americans. Yet they still feed our country and others, even if too many people mistakenly believe that food comes from Safeway. Despite agricultural consolidation, the Underland family farm on the border of Minnesota and South Dakota lives again in miniature on our model railroad. Modeler Bob Underland has recreated the family homestead, building many of the structures and fencing from scratch using recycled wood. Store-bought machinery and cattle bring the scene to life. Pride of place belongs to the prize-winning Black Angus beef cattle Bob would still like to breed. Modelers create worlds both new and old; come join us and make yours come to life.

The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in the Art Room in Catalina Vista. If you are interested in becoming a member of our club or learning more about what we do, please stop in on Monday mornings or contact Laurie Lichaa, President. If you would like to see some of our work, we have sculptures in the display cases in Catalina Vista and the Sun City Library. In mid-January the Sculpture Club started a class for new and current members taught by club member, Aleda Haug. The class is focused on sculpting a head using a skull armature like the one shown in the picture. Aleda is guiding students while they use techniques illustrated by Juliana Lepine, sculptor, who is known for her miniature sculptures. The picture also shows the beginning stages of a head sculpture with clay applied to the skull armature and the beginning stages of developing the eyes and nose. Students were tasked to choose a model for this sculpture project.

The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking, and people interested in other arts using fiber are invited to join our group. This project, by Carrie Wiley, is a good illustration of using a unique yarn to obtain a special effect. Carrie found this yarn on sale and thought she could use it in a hooking project. Since she was looking for a furry effect for the bunnies in this picture, she used the yarn she purchased. If you notice, the middle bunny looks a little darker than the other two. The difference in color is due to the way she pulled the yarn through the hooking material. This is a good example of obtaining two different effects using the same material.

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band (you’ll need to bring your own). A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

We offer several hundred scheduled rides year-round, among four different ride subgroups, from 20 to 60+ miles, to cafe destinations within Tucson and nearby towns, utilizing both pathways and roadways. Occasional away rides are offered as well. Our cafe stops offer coffee and conversation, greatly enjoyed by our members. The club has e-bike, mountain biking, and Women on Wheels subgroups. 2022 Tucson Senior Olympics for bocce, held at Sunflower the week of January 17-22. Fourteen teams from SCOV competed, and out of a possible nine medals, won six. In both the women’s and men’s divisions, SCOV teams won gold and bronze, and the coed division won silver and bronze. The SCOV Bocce Club conducted our own “faux” Olympics the week of February 7-11, with medals awarded at our annual pizza dinner February 11. The task force agreed through a consensus that one tennis court will be striped for two pickleball courts, one on each side of the tennis net. This striping will be on a temporary basis until additional permanent courts are constructed. Thank you, Tony Masterjohn, for your hard work.
