The genealogy lab is open. The weather is getting warmer, and now is an excellent time to get back to your family search. Members of the Genealogy Club may access the lab and library anytime the Welcome Center is open. Please contact Holly Gibson at ghgibson@live.com to learn about the procedures for the lab, or to set up a time to check out the lab and become a new member.

The Genealogy Club will be meeting again starting in October to accommodate the Activity Center remodeling. Check the club calendar and mark your calendars for the new schedule. We have a great lineup of speakers scheduled who will speak about history and genealogical methodology. The club anticipates continuing to have in-person speakers, as well as nationally recognized speakers via Zoom, utilizing the audio visual capabilities of the meeting room.

Our club provides an opportunity for discussions of challenging ideas using the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. The topics and genres vary widely, but the conversation is always thoughtful and lively. We meet twice a month, October through April, and will start a new volume, Great Conversations 3, in the fall.

Newcomers are welcome. For more information, please contact Barbara or Maryfaith.

ILR - Institute of Learning in Retirement Pres. Mary Lee Fitzgerald fitzgerald.marylee@gmail.com www.suncityilr.com

The Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) is returning to mostly in-person courses in the fall, and Samplers will be back on Thursday afternoons in Catalina Vista. Samplers are open to everyone in SCOV; no ILR membership is required. But courses in both fall and winter terms require a one-time life-long initiation fee of $25. Randy Myerson, ILR’s curriculum chair for five years, is retiring on December 31 but will oversee the eight-week fall schedule. A Transition Curriculum Committee is being formed. If you feel inspired to help create the 2023 winter term of courses, please contact Mary Lee Fitzgerald. Much of the planning can be done online. Filling the position of curriculum chair is an obvious priority; we welcome both questions and suggestions. Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-331-1092 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10 AM-Noon, WC1, Zoom meetings first Mon. of the month

Poetry has always been a vehicle for expressing an entire spectrum of feelings, from love to hate, despair to elation, discord to harmony and everything in between. Even before the present invasion of Ukraine, the daily photos of death and destruction, occasional glimpses of valor and fortunate escapes, we all are witnessing the price we pay for divisiveness, the ailing of democracy that once was proud and hale. Poets Corner member James Pavlakis has packed a serious message into this seemingly simple poem about a flower that also contains a great big dose of hope: A Flower is Born

It takes a while for seed and soil to get along. To warm up have some drinks get comfortable. To bond, each getting what it needs to make from two a new one and lift it up to meet the sun.

All resident poets are welcome to join our weekly meetings on Zoom.
