It was sad to hear that in nearly all the communities of those represented, there is an increase of residents that are not kind. The lack of kindness is not directed toward any specific group. It seems to be a phenomenon that appears to originate since Covid became a household word and resi dents were required to stay at home for many hours, days andHeremonths.atSCOV we are not immune to this type of behavior, but thankfully, it is much more rare than what I heard other general managers describe. I only bring this to your attention to remind all of us that we live, work and play very close to one another. A kindness shown goes a long way and is remembered with fondness. Like the horn honking resident/friend that drives by my office many mornings, it always brings a smile to my lips. Please look at your life and see who you can bring a smile to. Con sider using something that won’t cost you anything, such as a compliment or a simple greeting to someone who may not get any other interaction all day. I know many of you. I know how kind you are and the wel come words you share with me. I encourage all of us to be just a little more kind today and everyday. Thanks to all of you for the many kindnesses shown to me, my wife and all of our staff. I think you’re the best. PM, WC3

I had the opportunity to spend a few weeks with two of our granddaughters this summer. One is 16 and the other is 14. It was quite an enjoyable and eye opening experience as they tried to bring grandpa up to speed on the latest and greatest teenage slang. New words and recycled old words are created, and used, by this teen age subculture on a continual basis. Remember the words and phrases that we used way back in the 60s? Well, this generation has their own and understanding can sometimes beTodaunting.getyou up to speed, and maybe help you understand a few of the things that your grandchildren are saying, here are four examples that I found most interesting: Bussin’ – Something that you found extremely good, usu ally referring to food Cheugy – Someone who is out of date, referring to style of dress such as knee high boots Dapper – A way of describing something as cool or awe some. I pointed out to my granddaughters that this word has been around for quite awhile and has been used since the 1920s, to indicate how well a person is dressed. I was in formed that dapper has a broader meaning and can refer to anything, not just how a person is dressed. Rent Free – This phrase is certainly one that I appreciate. It indicates that you are so caught up with someone, or some thing, that you obsess about it. It’s taking up space in your head and you are receiving nothing but anguish in return.
Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, September 2022, Page 3 Association News
As residents of SCOV, we need to be aware of the future and what changes we will need for our community’s viability and relevance. That means that we can’t remain in the past and accept things just because it’s always been that way. Sometime during the first of this month, we will know the outcome of the vote for raising the Capital Contribution Fee. It’s passage is a key factor in keeping our community relevant with other 50+ communities. If we don’t continue to change,

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Share Some Kindness
Of course, none of this new fangled slang is really relevant to us. It’s for a younger generation. Each generation has dif ferent ideas, thoughts, needs and desires.
At a national conference of Community As sociations Institute (CAI) earlier this summer, I had occasion to visit with many of my col leagues. Many being more than 100. The subject came up of kindness of residents within our respective communities. Most people know and understand what being kind is. I know of many within our SCOV community that exhibit this special attribute on a regular basis. It would be difficult to try to define by example, as it can be shown in so many ways.

It’s still hot and you’re looking for something to do. How about a little road trip, in your air-condi tioned car, to check out some of our ar ea’s extraordinary outdoor murals? According to www.thisistucson.com, there are more than 100 murals in Tucson and Oro Valley. These public showpieces have become part of Tucson’s signature for all to enjoy. If you decide to go on a mural trek, start by planning your route before you go. There is a map of the downtown-area murals at www.tucsonaz.gov/muralmap/#. The downtown murals are a great starting point, because you can see about 25 of them in a relatively small area. Parking and walking around downtown tend to be much easier on Saturday and Sunday, where you can park for free at metered spaces and there is less traffic. When you go, plan to get out of your car so that you can see the murals in their entirety. Usually, this necessitates standing across the street from the mural. Last year SCOV Hiking Club members explored the downtown murals. Several of the photos are from their walk.

In the modern age, people have become a little more con scious when it comes to cleaning gym equipment and dis infecting it when they are finished using it. Whether you’re going to a fitness class in person or using the equipment, the equipment needs to be cleaned after each workout. If you are in a gym with other people, it is common cour tesy to clean the equipment for a variety of reasons. Nobody wants to share sweat. Even if you are the only one who is going to use the equipment, you should definitely wipe it down. Using your wipes, try to get all the awkward areas such as nooks and crannies, as well as the seams around the seat. Also focus on any area of high contact.

New homeowners may not be aware, but SCOV has a wonderful Library in the Welcome Center. Use of the Library is part of your HOA amenities. Our Library contains current fiction and nonfiction books, DVDs, audio books, puzzles and magazines. Most of these items are purchased thanks to the generous support of Friends of the Library (FOL). FOL started with about 400 members in 2016 and has almost doubled in size since then. To join FOL and keep our Library growing, pick up a form in the Library. Membership is $15/sgl or $20/family. Becoming a Friend will not only help purchase items, but will allow you to attend exclusive FOL events and be the first to be able to buy tickets to the popular annual HomeCheckTour.Coming Events for information about our exciting Book Bingo. If you move within SCOV, your old directory listing is re moved. Why? Many people own more than one house here. Sometimes this is temporary while the owner buys a new house and sells the old one. Others are permanent and used as rentals or bought for rehab and resale. All new owners are unlisted by default, even if you were listed at your old ad dress. You can update your listing at any time by completing the online form, “To change your directory listing.” Are you a new resident? Check your new owner emails from SCOV for information about how to list your information in the online and printed directories. In addition to names, landline and mobile phone numbers, addresses and email addresses, we can list your hometown and occupation. We don’t list “retired” as that’s the case for most SCOV residents.
Featured artists this month are Ken Rosburg and Char lotte Landis. Ken Rosburg Settling in SCOV in 2018, Ken found his second home in the Wood Shop. After discovering a six-point-star de sign on paper, he figured out how to cut twelve triangles of exotic and domestic woods and fashion them into a star. The result was a beautiful tissue box cover. His works include clocks, coast ers, wine glass covers and charcuterie boards, incorporating his star and ro sette designs.

The recent Oro Valley mayoral debate was a great suc cess. In fact, those wishing to attend the forum exceeded facility capacity. SCOV insurance requires that we restrict attendance to the capacity rating for each location. The allotted time frame did not allow all of the suggested questions to be put to the candidates. The remaining ques tions were provided to the candidates and their written re sponses were subsequently returned and are now posted on the SVOC website under Committees/GAC/documents.

Neighborhood Pride Chair: Bill Bable Questions 520-917-8079 scoroval@ciramail First Wed., 9 AM, Catalina Vista Congratulations on choosing to live in this glorious community. You may have selected SCOV because of its natural beauty, amenities, or available activities. Equally important is that SCOV is so beautifully main tained. This is a direct result of the efforts of staff, maintenance crews, the residents and the active members of several committees. Neighborhood Pride is one of these commit tees. Now under the leadership of Bill Bable, there are some big goals. Consistency. Simplicity. Communication. Togeth er, we’re up for the task.

September is the time of the year that we overseed winter ryegrass on the golf course for the upcoming season. During the time we are closed for overseeding, the driving range tee will have limited access but will be accessible to hit balls off the artificial turf tee line.
Semiannual inspections of SCOV facilities are one of the Properties Committee’s primary functions. The purpose of the inspections is to identify the condition and maintenance needs of SCOV facilities and grounds. Committee members together with HOA maintenance staff will conduct a variety of inspections during September and October. Specific inspec tions will include general facilities, golf course cart paths, the golf course irrigation pump station and the Chalk Creek Wash. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. The calendar on the SCOV website has scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.
Golf Advisory Chair Kevin Devaney 708-732-2943 SCOVgolfadvisory@gmail.com Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3
September is the time of the year that golf course maintenance shifts its priorities. In stead of trying to grow healthy Bermuda grass on the tees and fairways, the focus changes to slowing down the Bermuda grass in preparation for overseeding. Healthy Bermuda grass provides a great seed bed for the germinating rye grass seed, versus a thin stand of Bermuda grass that ex poses the seed to heat and lack of moisture. However, if the Bermuda grass is still rapidly growing while the ryegrass is trying to establish, it will out-compete the new seedlings and cause the ryegrass canopy to thin out. The Bermuda grass growth is slowed down in several ways. Fertilization was stopped on fairways and tees around August 1. Mowers are vertically mowing to thin the canopy which slows the rapid growth and density. Growth regulators are applied that limit excess growth as well. The week prior to overseeding, another growth regulator is applied that puts the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. This allows the mowers to scalp the Bermuda grass down so the ryegrass seed can better enter the canopy. The dormancy ends as the irrigation is started, but it lasts long enough to allow the ryegrass canopy to establish. This year all the fairways will be overseeded. Of concern is hole #2, and an anticipated poor transition into next sum mer. The high golf cart traffic is so focused going down the middle of the fairway, it leads to many bare areas. Some kind of traffic control will need to be implemented for the health of the grass.

How do we prepare the Tipster for publication? The con tributors submit articles on the SCOV website by the eighth of the month. Marsha Dean, our SCOV Communications Coordinator and editor, reviews the articles as she enters them into the Tipster format, highlighting issues for the edi torial committee to consider. She chooses the color theme and cover photo. Next, she divides the copy into sections for teams of Tipster editors to review–to ensure the articles meet Tipster Article Standards, are clear in meaning and useful to the community. Submitters are consulted if significant changes are needed. After editing teams have met, Marsha uses their edited copy to make the indicated changes. Next, the second draft. The chair and a member of the committee review the entire issue for additional editing. Marsha again revises the copy, arranges the ads and photos, and it’s off to the printer. We hope you enjoy your community magazine.

From time to time, we have all been told to speed up play or to pick up your ball and move to the next tee. We may have even grumbled under our breath at the reprimand. But not having a player assistant on the course can create a less enjoyable playing experience. The player assistant, along with the tee host are golf’s version of a traffic cop. They help prevent bottlenecks and keep the pace of play at a reason able speed. They help players who are unfamiliar with the course and even remove dangerous wildlife such as rattle snakes. So when the tee host is reminding you to report to the first tee or the player assistant tells you to catch up to the group ahead of you, give them a smile and a nod, and help everyone to have a pleasant day on the golf course. Thank you to Bob Telban, Brett Sims, Carsten Knight, Gary Letter man, George Peppe, Jaren Keating, JC Castano, Lynn Wildwood, Owen Nutley, Richard Weirsma, TJ Hall, Tom White hall and Wilson Wright.

Volunteers play such an important role in mak ing SCOV one of the top retirement communities in the United States. From the HOA Board and associated com mittees, to Tipster colla tion, to assure accuracy and distribution of the phone books, to lead ership of the clubs and organizations and many others; all help in making everything run so smoothly. Your Foundation is one of these volunteer groups that particularly help support SCOV by financially supporting health, cultural, recreational, educational and charitable needs within the community and the surrounding area. Your Foundation is governed by nine volunteer residents who evaluate grant requests from clubs and organizations. Grants have been made for as little as $100 up to $7,000. The biplane is a model of the Boeing-Stearman PT-17, a World War II trainer for the Navy and Army Air Force. It had to be handled exactly according to the pilot operating manu al or the trainee would get a big surprise. In this vignette by Fred Faust, the plane is parked on a runway made of PSP (pierced steel planking), a common construction method for building airstrips quickly and in remote areas during World War II and later. Two trainees in the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) program are checking out their plane. Maybe they are wondering where the leak on the runway came from. Pictured is a recent sculpture project completed by Dale Foster. Originally, Dale intended to make a “hound dog” as a 3-dimensional sculpture that would rest on top of a cactus spine mounted on a piece of wood. As the sculp ture developed it morphed into a “skinny coyote.” Dale realized that the cactus spine was too delicate to use as a base, so the piece became a wall hanging. This project is a good illustration on how initial ideas change over time due to unforeseen reasons. Seniors for Kids Co-Pres. Jean Sax 651-436-4243 jeanazmn@gmail.com Co-Pres. The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets Tues day mornings in the Sewing Room throughout the year. If you are interested in our group, stop by the Sewing Room on Tuesdays between 9-11 AM. The group provides materi als and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited to join our group. The picture is of two different foundation ma terials used in hooking. On the left is monk’s cloth and the other ma terial is rug warp. Monk’s cloth is pliable, soft and has a close strand count. It is a good material to use for punch rug or when hooking a rug with a random pattern. Rug warp has stronger strands, thus it tends to be stiffer. It is good material for hooking straight lines. Re cently one of our members started a project using monks cloth for a design that required straight line hooking. She ended up switching to rug warp because of the difficulty of keeping a straight line when hooking on the monks cloth. Show ‘n Share Leader Deb Wehrung 267-377-6760 debwehrung@gmail.com

The months are passing and soon the seasonal residents will return to SCOV. When they return, activity in the Technol ogy Club starts to brew. The seasonal residents frequently have issues getting their Internet working, their printer work ing or their cell phone emails available to contact all those they left behind.
Well, we are here to help. Join the Technology Club and we can be of assistance, not only with your computers and printers, but we can also provide help on both Apple and An droid devices, setting up your modem or router and evaluat ing or fixing issues with your smart home devices. In keeping with our increasing activity, we will offer a num ber of new classes such as “How the Internet Works,” “How Your Cell Phone Works” and “What’s a QR Code and How Can I Read It?” In addition to our normal Windows 10 help sessions and Apple help sessions, we will offer continued iPhone classes and new Android (tablet and phone) help sessions.Looking forward to seeing you in our classes. The eight-week fall term of adult learning classes begins the first week in October. How wonderful to have our own educational campus right here in SCOV. No need to drive to the university, hunt for parking or pay a pricey tuition. ILR’s courses are either in Catalina Vista, the Welcome Center or in the Native American rooms (when the Activity Center re opens in 2023). There is a modest fee to cover minimal costs (purchasing equipment, etc.). All instructors are volunteers, and most are residents of SCOV with an array of impressive backgrounds and experiences. There are descriptions of the fall courses on our website and video previews with the in structors. You can register and pay the appropriate fees online.

Next meeting Sat., Sep. 17, 1 PM, Zoom Come join us to hear our special guest, Kathy Hoffman, running now for her second term as Arizona’s State Super intendent of Public Instruction. Much of her work is oversight of the wide-ranging schools in Arizona. Equally important is the State Superintendent’s leadership role where she serves on all statewide public education boards which give her a unique opportunity to develop best practices and strategies that take into account the needs of our children at every stage from birth to college to the workforce. A lifetime edu cator, Hoffman is passionate about preparing children for success in schools across the state. For this she is focused on growing Arizona’s educator workforce through targeted recruitment and retention efforts. As election day draws nearer, we have invited all three Democratic LD17 candidates for the Arizona Legislature so you will have a chance to meet them again. We’ll have an update on all our 2022 election projects as well.
One of the three new shade structures Project updates: This has been an exciting and productive summer for our club. In July, the old entrance sign to the dog park was updated to conform to the SCOV signage standards and we now look like a true amenity of the neighborhood. In August, we erected three much-needed shade pavilions to the delight of the members and their dogs. This will provide shade as well as some protection from the rains. Because of our increased membership, the next big proj ect we will undertake is to line the parking lot for more efficient use and ease of access to allow more vehicles. A big thank you for all of the donations received and people who are making this happen.
Save the date: The fall kickoff dinner for the Prepare and Share Dinner Club is scheduled for Monday, November 14. This is one of the few catered events for our club. Yearly membership renewal information and details on the dinner will be provided to club members in October. The Prepare and Share Dinner Club provides an enjoyable social evening for the months from November through March with a themed monthly dinner. You will get to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking (and eating) interesting food. Please check out our website for photos of some of our dinners. If you have interest in our club, please contact one of the officers shown above.

It’s still summer and a great time to commit to a core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Classes are still small, making it a good time to learn. SCOV offers Joseph Pilates mat classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. The benefits that come from performing spe cific strengthening and stretching exercises strengthen the body’s core muscles (your abdomen and back). These exercises increase spine mobility and build flexibility. More ben efits include better balance and muscle tone plus increased stamina. Our instructors will modify the exercises for you as necessary. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just come by and watch. Call Mary.

Imagine the most sophisticated computer yet built. Our brains are far more complex and sophisticated than most of us realize and researchers are learning more and more about how word games and crossword puzzles keep our minds sharp. The game of Scrabble is often used to help brain injury patients regain cognitive abilities and hand/eye coordination. While luck plays a role in how well you play Scrabble, computer analysis shows that playing still requires a certain amount of skill. The Pickleball Club takes great pride in the courts they play on. In July, Nelson Brown, Tony Masterjohn and Bob Shull cleaned the courts with a power washer provided by Craig Jones to clean the courts, which now look great. Thank them for their hard work. Now, if we can keep the birds off the courts, we should have clean courts. A new task force was created, Hard Courts Task Force, to explore other options for location for the racket sports in SCOV. So far, they have de termined eight locations in the community where construc tion could be possible. Further investigation is necessary to decide if any of the locations are feasible to construct courts. The decision should be available in late September.
The Mini Golf Club objective is to promote the use and enjoyment of the mini-golf course for socialization, with an emphasis on providing an outdoor activity for those unable to play more active sports. Do you remember your first bike? Wheels for Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing re habbed bicycles to children and families in need in the Tuc son area. To date, we have donated 3,000 bikes to local non profits who then distribute the bikes to their clients. Some of our partner organizations include Refugee Focus, Boys and Girls Club of Tucson, Children’s Advocacy Center, Casa de los Niños, Ronald McDonald House and Youth On Their Own. Wheels for Kids is an all-volunteer effort, and we are always happy to welcome new people to our team. If you are interested in learning more, please visit our website or call Tom Terfehr. Help kids experience the same joy you had when you got your first bike.
