Poets Corner Sharyn Rafieyan 520-331-1092 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10:30 AM-12:30 PM, WC1

“In this world of pain, even half a rainbow, even one cherry blossom.”

Writing and reading poetry helps us define and process reality by allowing us to examine what we see, think, feel and imagine. The brevity and seeming simplicity of this haiku by Deborah A. Bennett encompasses the current status of our world with one sufficient descriptor: “pain.” It then offers the means to abate that pain with the hopeful symbol of even “half a rainbow” and the living beauty of “one cherry blossom.”

Printed as part of a series called “Five Haiku in Spring,” this selection seems to celebrate a welcome reversal of the Covid closures that began last March and the gradual return of what this season used to mean.

Experience the panacea that poetry can be. Newcomers are always welcome at the “Corner.”

SCOV Technology Club Pres. Paul Sherwood 520-329-7661 paulgsherwood@gmail.com www.scovcomputer.com

For help with basic and advanced digital problems, email scovtech@gmail.com or call 520-329-7661. Facebook access is also available, allowing members to consult with each other.

The club board is developing plans to reopen the lab at the Welcome Center for on-site help, special interest group use and research, as well as limited meeting space for other clubs to use during the lengthy Activity Center remodel. SCOV club presidents are encouraged to contact Paul Sherwood with any digital needs that can be provided in the lab.

Monthly general club meeting options are being considered for online and in-person attendance. Topics like how to age in place using electronics, accessing the medical industry from home, electronics for your motor home and exciting virtual tours may be discussed, if our members express interest.

Annual club membership is still only $10 per household. Visit the website for PayPal or debit/credit card options.

Politics doesn’t take a holiday, but the SCOV Democratic Club will pause for the summer months and not hold general meetings during July or August. We will meet again on Zoom at our usual time: Saturday, September 11, 1 PM.

Please stay tuned. Until then, we wish you a safe, enjoyable summer.

Dining - Prepare & Share Pres. Debbie Kotlarek 262-899-5810 dlkotlarek@gmail.com VP Sandra Fisher 208-860-3431 sandrafisher2703@gmail.com www.scovprepareandshare.weebly.com

Given that so many people in SCOV have been fully vaccinated, we are optimistic that we will likely be able to resume our in-home dinners in the fall. The board will be communicating with membership about the conditions under which members would feel comfortable hosting. As our name implies, our members usually prepare meals that follow an agreed-upon theme and share our dishes in the home of a host. The board is considering a club activity in September and possibly earlier. Anyone interested in joining the club should email Debbie dlkotlarek@gmail.com to get on our email list.

Dog Club - Fido’s Friends Membership Chairs: Peggy Perkins 650-279-0347 peggyandpups@comcast.net or Carol Tombre 208-961-1133 mctombre@yahoo.com Membership meetings and lectures will resume in the fall www.scovff.weebly.com

Bob Abel (Fido’s Friends founder) and Chic Garner (Fido’s Friends president)

On May 14 we hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the new small dog addition and expanded large dog section of the K-9 Korral. This was originally envisioned by Dr. Bill Abel back in 2005. In 2018, Ron Brown and Allan Keller volunteered to research and propose upgrades to the dog park. They visited other local dog parks, surveyed Fido’s Friends members, researched costs and prepared presentations. In 20192020 Kari Durfur and Chic Garner (co-presidents) presented the findings to the SCOV board. After several board presentations and discussions, and with the lobbying by Ronna Heinig (even though she is a cat person), the expansion project was approved.

The ribbon cutting ceremony marks the first of several improvements planned for the K-9 Korral. With the SCOV project money and the generous donations from club members, we are continuing plans to install a new entrance sign, provide more shade structures and additional seating.

We want to extend our thanks to all persons who made this project a success and to Phil Fisher for photographing this event.

Garden Club Co-Pres. Joyce Wisbey 520-825-5425 bwisbey90@msn.com Co-Pres. Peggy Knapp 520-825-0664 pegnap@gmail.com VP Charlotte Herbert 541-580-6289 charlotte.h12@gmail.com https://sites.google.com/view/scov-garden-club/home

The Tucson Botanical Gardens recommends the following for your gardens in July as monsoon rains arrive. Use the rain delay function on your irrigation timer to delay irrigation. Clean and repair drip-irrigation systems if needed. Inspect water harvesting systems and other garden structures after heavy rains. Plant a monsoon garden of southwestern heirloom seeds such as beans, corn and squash. Fertilize container succulents at one-half strength. Finally, tidy up your herbs and flowers. Over the summer, Charlotte Herbert, our new VP, and Judee Wickersham, member at large, are planning some desert-focused informational speakers for our monthly meetings and some great tours, too. Check out the club website for upcoming events in the fall. We begin taking new and renewing memberships for 2022 in October. If interested in receiving club communications, contact Annette Munoz queenanne9@yahoo.com.

In keeping with the baseball theme, we will be serving hot dogs, sides, cookies and, of course, popcorn with the movie. Cost is $5 pp and seating is limited. For information on buying tickets, email havurahscov.info@gmail.com. We are also planning a Break the Fast buffet dinner on Thursday, September 16, and general meetings will start up again in October. Come check us out. Have a safe and joyous summer.
