Dakota Life: Recipes of Our Grandmothers
Explore South Dakota’s heritage through food, family and customs. Tết: Vietnamese Lunar New Year Each January or February, Sioux Falls’ Vietnamese-American community celebrates Tết Nguyên Đán or “Feast of the First Morning of the First Day.” This year, the lunar new year falls on January 25. Join Suong Pho, Anh Nguyen and Tina Nguyen as they prep traditional foods and Chi Tran and Vince Danh as they emcee the celebration. “I enjoy doing this because I’m first-generation Vietnamese-American,” says Danh. “We are kind of caught in two worlds. Part of us is embracing the new culture, the new country that our parents moved to. The other part of it, we hear stories from our families, how they used to do things back in their country, how they used to do this, and it’s up to us to kind of like digest both and figure out, where are we gonna do this? How do we celebrate both, how can we be both, true to our heritage but also embrace what opportunity we have now?” Aebleskiver Aebleskiver is a celebration of memories with family and gathering around the breakfast table. Roberta Rasmussen and Kayla Nielsen share their recipes and favorite techniques for making the morning treats. In Denmark Aebleskiver is a Christmas treat, for Danes in Viborg the sphere shaped cakes are enjoyed during the community Danish Days celebration. Aebleskiver requires a special pan, simple recipe and practiced technique.

Pasties: Portable Pies Typically associated with Cornwall, UK, the baked pastry goodness that are pasties are found throughout the world. We’ll visit Lead, SD, to tastetest the meat-and-veg hand pies. Dalesburg’s Midsommar Smorgasbord Dalesburg’s Midsommar celebration reveals the area’s Scandinavian roots. The spirit of that Scandinavian “Velkommen” is best experienced in the smorgasbord supper served in the church’s basement dining hall. Diners buy tickets weeks ahead of time to feast upon potatis korv, frugt suppa, and, of course, Swedish meatballs. Food traditions tie the small congregation together and help cement its relationships with the next generation. Tune in for an all new episode of Dakota Life, Thursday, Jan. 2, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1. Rebroadcasts Sunday, Jan. 8, at 1pm (noon MT).

Jane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817, when she turned her thoughts to a happier subject. She started work on a witty and delightful novel set in a seaside town. She never finished it. Now, noted screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Les Misérables, Primetime Emmy® winner for Little Dorrit) picks up Austen’s plot and takes it in a provocative direction on Masterpiece Sanditon. The bold, lavish adaptation of Jane Austen’s final work stars Rose Williams (Curfew) as Austen’s lively but levelheaded heroine, Charlotte Heywood; Theo James (Divergent) as the humorous, charming (and slightly wild!) Sidney Parker; Anne Reid (Years and Years) as the forthright grande dame of Sanditon, Lady Denham; Kris Marshall (Love Actually) as Sanditon’s compulsively enterprising promoter, Tom Parker; and Crystal Clarke (Ordeal by Innocence) as the West Indian heiress, Miss Lambe.

Learn. Dream. Grow.
With four acclaimed Austen adaptations to his credit (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey and Emma), plus the Pride and Prejudice modernization of Bridget Jones’s Diary, Andrew Davies is no stranger to Jane Austen’s story strategies and an experienced creative spirit to interpret one of the world’s most amusing and penetrating novelists. The storyline, as Austen left it in 11 beautifully crafted chapters, is as follows: Tom Parker (Marshall) is obsessed with turning the sleepy seaside village of Sanditon into a fashionable health resort, and he enlists the backing of local bigwig
Lady Denham (Reid). Through a mishap, Tom makes the acquaintance of the Heywoods and invites their eldest daughter, Charlotte (Williams), for an extended stay at Sanditon. There, the sensible Charlotte observes hypochondria, avarice and attempted seduction run amok. Lady Denham, a widow, is playing matchmaker for her destitute nephew, Sir Edward (Fox), who is determined to seduce Lady Denham’s ward, Clara (Sacofsky). The arrival of wealthy, mixed-race heiress Miss Lambe (Clarke), under the thumb of Tom’s upright brother Sidney (James), adds complications. Eligible men find Miss Lambe fascinating, while Charlotte is intrigued by Sidney. With many promising loose ends and romantic possibilities, how will the young people pair off? Who will Lady Denham designate as her heir?
Will Tom’s tourist spa finally catch on with the public? Where will that lead? Andrew Davies imaginatively enters this world of Georgian-era suitors, hustlers, and health cranks and boldly imagines what happens next. Even as Jane Austen was succumbing to the ravages of her fatal illness, she chose to lampoon the contemporary fad for tonics, sea water cures, and other medical remedies. Undiagnosed at the time, her malady was probably Addison’s disease, which today is easily treatable. She might have had many years of writing ahead of her, but Jane Austen died at age 41, on July 18, 1817. Masterpiece Sanditon premieres Sunday, January 12, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1.
Indulge in a fresh adaptation of the E.M. Forster’s classic Howards End. Often considered Forster’s masterpiece, this is the story of independent, unconventional Schlegel sisters seeking meaning and love as they navigate an intensely changing world in turn-of-the-20th-century England. Margaret Schlegel (Hayley Atwell of Captain America, Duchess) is an intelligent, idealistic young woman courted by older Henry Wilcox, (Matthew Macfadyen of Spooks, Pride & Prejudice), a conservative, self-made businessman, after his wife Ruth Wilcox (Julia Ormond) dies unexpectedly and he becomes owner of Howards End. Meanwhile Margaret’s passionate and capricious younger sister Helen Schlegel takes up the cause of Leonard Bast, a young bank clerk who falls on hard times at work and at home with his partner Jacky. In the absence of their late parents, the sisters’ loving but interfering Aunt Juley (Tracy Ullman) tries to keep the young ladies and their brother Tibby on the straight and narrow. The Queen’s Favourite Animals tells the story of Queen Elizabeth’s life and character through her relationships with her animals. The documentary profiles the 13 generations of corgis the Queen has bred since her 18th birthday (when she received “Susan,” the matriarch of this corgi dynasty), to her triumphs in the horseracing world. This is a portrait of the queen as the person she perhaps always wanted to be — a countrywoman. SDPB1: Sunday, Jan. 5, 9pm (8 MT)

A streaming device, like Roku, Amazon Fire, or Google Chrome – along with Wi-Fi and an HDMI cable are all you need to get the PBS Video app. Plug the device of your choice into an HDMI input on the back of your digital TV and you’re set. The best news of all? You aren’t required to have any of this. If you have a digital TV and a properly oriented antenna you can receive dozens of signals free, over-the-air. SDPB offers four channels on TV (PBS Main, World, Create, and PBS Kids) plus both of our radio signals (SDPB Radio HD-1 and SDPB Classical 24).

Learn. Dream. Grow.
If you have a new TV and you’re wondering how to make sure you receive all that SDPB has to offer, here are a few things you should know.
• Have a “Smart TV?” Smart TVs act much like a computer, tablet or smartphone – they connect to the internet and provide you access to a variety of streaming services, including TV shows. Most Smart TVs support such popular streaming services as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Pandora, and PBS Video. Some sets offer only a handful of apps that rarely change, while other models deliver several screens of offerings, ranging from MLB to Facebook to Stitcher.
• If you want to access PBS programming – in addition to
what we broadcast – make sure you have the PBS Video app (more on apps next page). If you have a Samsung Smart TV manufactured after 2017 the PBS Video app is included. If not, you’ll need a streaming player, like Roku, Amazon Fire or Apple TV.
• If you receive your TV via cable or satellite – or even an
antenna – you can connect directly into your Smart TV and follow the instructions to tune it to receive the signals.
Having trouble? PBS has a “how to” page with walkthroughs for setup on smart devices that can recieve the PBS Video app. For help with smart TVs, streaming devices, tablets, or phones go to help.pbs.org/support/solutions. NPR also has a setup walkthrough for smart speakers at npr.org. Search “how to listen to NPR on your smart speaker.” Prefer human contact? Call SDPB at 605-677-5861 and we will do our best to help get you connected!

American Experience Joseph McCarthy SDPB1: Monday, Jan. 6, 8pm (7 MT) SDBP2: Saturday, Jan 11, 2pm (1 MT)
A compelling chronicle of the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin Senator who would test the limits of American decency and democracy. Free of restraint or oversight, he conducted a crusade against those he accused of being Communists and enemies of the state, a chilling campaign marked by groundless accusations, bullying intimidation, grandiose Senator Joseph McCarthy and showmanship and cruel victimization. Finally, Senator Millard Tydings. after years in the headlines, he was brought down by his own excesses and overreach. He died a broken man, but his name lived on. For more than half a century, it has been linked to an all-toofamiliar phenomenon, the modern-day witch hunt we call McCarthyism. Photo: Food & Drug Administration

For months, Weaver, his wife Vicki, and their children holed up on their property on Ruby Ridge with a cache of firearms. Shortly before dawn on August 21, 1992, six heavily armed U.S. marshals crossed paths with members of the family and a firefight broke out. The standoff that mesmerized the nation would leave Weaver injured, his wife and son dead, and some convinced that the federal government was out of control. The film features intimate interviews with Weaver’s daughter, Sara, and federal agents involved in the confrontation.

In April 1944, Jewish prisoners Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler miraculously escaped from Auschwitz concentration camp and fled through Nazioccupied Poland to find refuge in Žilina, Slovakia, where they connected with the Jewish Underground. Once safe, they recounted what they left behind. Their harrowing testimony revealed the true horror of the Holocaust to the outside world, describing in forensic detail the gas chambers and the full extent of the Nazi extermination program. Join historians, survivors and experts as they consider one of the great moral dilemmas of the 20th century. Should the Allies have risked killing Auschwitz prisoners and bombed the camp to stop future atrocities?

Whale Detective
September 2015, a 30-ton humpback whale breached and almost landed on natural history filmmaker Tom Mustill and his friend Charlotte Kinloch as they kayaked in Monterey Bay, California. Incredibly, they survived the incident, but the traumatic experience haunted Mustill and left him wondering if the whale was deliberately trying to hurt them or trying its best not to. To find the answer, Mustill returns to California to investigate, meeting those who have survived similar close encounters with whales and the experts who know the whales best. What he discovers raises far bigger questions, not just about what happened that day, but also about humans’ relationship with whales and their future alongside us. No Passport Required, hosted and executive produced by renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson, returns this month to SDPB for a second season. Samuelsson will explore six different American cities, visiting professional chefs and home cooks, for an in-depth look at the rich diversity of immigrant traditions and cuisines woven into American food and culture. An immigrant himself — born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden, now a celebrated chef, restaurateur, author and resident of Harlem — Samuelsson is passionate about sharing and celebrating the food of America’s vibrant communities. “I’m so happy to be working on a second season of No Passport Required,” says Samuelsson. “We have only begun to scratch the surface of the amazing range of immigrant cultures and cuisines found in the U.S. It’s exciting to go on this journey once again and bring attention to these diverse communities that contribute so much to our nation.”
No Passport Required Los Angeles
No Passport Required Houston
Marcus visits Los Angeles, where the largest Armenian community outside of the homeland thrives in the foothills north of downtown L.A. Resilient and entrepreneurial, Armenians are scattered across the world, and Marcus meets Armenians from Russia, Lebanon, Syria, Ethiopia and Egypt. From lule kabob — the dish that holds the diaspora together — to Ghapama, pumpkin stuffed with apricots, rice, Aleppo peppers and other trimmings, Marcus learns what sets this cuisine apart. Thousands of years old and full of tradition, food is a source of pride and cultural identity that has helped Armenians survive. Traditional recipes are now being reinvented by young chefs, while a new generation is being introduced to the history and foodways of their grandparents.
Marcus goes to Houston, America’s most diverse city, to explore West African food. While many may be unfamiliar with Nigerian, Senegalese or Liberian cooking, West African foodways were brought to this country through slavery, and dishes like jollof rice and yams are the foundation for soul food. From pepper soup to the iconic Nigerian suya — grilled meat skewers with peanut and other spices — Marcus learns about the big, bold tastes of this unique cuisine and meets innovative chefs who are pushing hard to bring the taste of West African food to mainstream America.
