SDPB1: Monday, July 8 through Wednesday, July 10 at 8pm (7 MT) July 2019 marks 50 years since the Eagle has landed. To commemorate Neil and Buzz’s historic first moon landings, this summer SDPB presents American Experience: Chasing the Moon, a new six-hour documentary series that lets you and your family experience the thrilling era of the space race, from its earliest days to the 1969 moon landing. A fascinating mix of scientific innovation, political calculation, media spectacle and personal drama, the series brings the Space Age to vivid life. Photos :NASA

SDPB1: Thursday, July 18 at 8pm (7 MT) Approximately 238,855 miles (or 30 Earths) closer to home, SDPB celebrates the lunar landing with programming and events highlighting the role of South Dakota places and people who helped shape and continue to contribute to space exploration, tech innovations, and the aerospace industry. Produced by SDPB’s Brian Gevik, the 30-minute documentary begins with the record-setting high altitude balloon flights launched out of the Stratobowl in the Black Hills in 1934 and 1935. We’ll look at how Raven Industries, now Aerostar Raven, grew and continues to prosper as a leader in high altitude platform technologies. We’ll visit EROS and look at how the Earth Resources Observation Satellite network has contributed to knowledge of the Earth’s surface and how those changes could be related to climate change. We’ll also speak with young South Dakotans just entering various fields in space science to learn their visions for the future of space exploration.

Lee Solid, Rocket Man from Martin

We’ll visit Florida’s Kennedy Space Center to meet Lee Solid, a 1959 graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT). Originally from Martin, SD, Solid first worked as a rocket test engineer for a company called Rocketdyne. Solid’s first project involved testing and monitoring the systems on the Atlas rockets used in the Mercury flights. Solid also worked on the rocket that sent John Glenn into space and was present at the launch. Solid went on to work in the Gemini and Apollo programs.

Scott Vangen, One Step from the Shuttle

Getting ready for balloon flight into the Stratosphere Bowl. July 27, 1934.

We’ll also meet Scott Vangen, a 1982 SDSMT graduate who has worked for NASA in roles from engineering to project management. Vangen was part of the shuttle program and was a backup payload specialist. If anyone had gotten ill, Vangen would have been on a shuttle. Vangen is currently involved in projects that could lead to another lunar landing and perhaps even a Mars landing.

Among the stars in the night sky wander the eight-plus worlds of our own solar system— each home to truly awe-inspiring sights. Volcanoes three times higher than Everest, geysers erupting with icy plumes, cyclones larger than Earth lasting hundreds of years. Each of our celestial neighbors has a distinct personality and a unique story. In this fivepart series, NOVA The Planets will explore the awesome beauty of The Planets, including Saturn’s 175,000-mile-wide rings, Mars’ ancient waterfalls four times the size of any found on Earth, and Neptune’s winds—12 times stronger than any hurricane felt on our planet. We Are Superman Kansas City has suffered from hypersegregation for over 60 years. We Are Superman chronicles the story of Troost Avenue, which lies in the heart of KC. Troost draws a geographic line between black and white, rich and poor. A growing movement unites to transform Troost from a dividing line into a gathering place. On the corner of 31st Street and Troost Avenue, a community of people are battling against prejudicial legislation, exploitative corporations, and a stereotype that has stigmatized the urban core since the suburban revolution. This is the story of their work, their vision, and how they are no longer waiting on a Superman to come save them.

Dream with Me Saba is one of the more than 800,000 “Dreamers” who availed herself of the DACA program in 2012. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama era program, provided some temporary protections to undocumented immigrants who entered the country as children. In 2017, the Trump administration made the decision to rescind DACA. With her immigration status once again in limbo, Saba must now face a new set of challenges.

Hale County This Morning, This Evening Hale County is Academy Award-nominated and one of the year’s most critically acclaimed films. A dreamy and intimate journey through the world of Hale County, Alabama, a richly detailed glimpse into life in America’s Black Belt. Full of sublime moments, the film immerses the viewer in the southern black American experience in a place where Walker Evans and James Agee once chronicled the lives of poor, white sharecropping families in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men in the 1930s, but today is an oft-misunderstood African American community. The film is “pure cinematic poetry” wrote A.O. Scott in The New York Times. SDPB2: Wednesday, July 3, 5pm (4 MT)

Cash Wilson’s Wild Ride SDPB’s Nate Wek talks with Cash Wilson, a 2019 Wall High School graduate who has rodeoed, wrestled, tackled, and sprinted his way through his high school career. Of all his extra-curriculars, Wilson’s favorite sport is rodeo, and he plans to attend the University of Wyoming this fall. The cowboy’s trophy buckles are many, from the 2017 National Little Britches Rodeo Association Saddle Bronc Riding Champion, to multipletime state champion, to taking first in the National High School Rodeo twice, and in 2019 is hoping for a third win at Nationals. Nate Wek: When did you fall in love with rodeo? Cash Wilson: “My whole life has been around horses and stuff, bucking horses. My family rodeos – cousins, uncles, and they’re all my role models, and I look up to a lot of them. My Uncle Mike, he’s played a big role in my success in rodeo. I worked for him for four or five years in the summertime, and he just got me started in bronc riding. We used to get on ponies, and he has this bucking machine out there, and we just kind of set my saddle for me.” NW: Out of all your events, how did you choose saddle bronc? CW: “When I look at a saddle bronc rider, it’s the classy event. 16

Learn. Dream. Grow.

They always call it the classic event. I just look up to a lot of saddle bronc riders – all my cousins and uncles and everyone in my family has done it. The people I looked up to have all done it. So it inspired me to do it, I guess.” NW: Let’s talk about what it’s like to compete at the state level for rodeo. Can you explain what that atmosphere is like during the state rodeo championships? CW: “State, it’s a whirlwind. Get on every single day and kind of have a lot going on, usually, if you’re in multiple events. You’re up all night and all morning, and you just got to stay focused. There’s a lot going on. Stay focused and do your business, I guess.” NW: How did you react when you found out that you were going to nationals that first time? CW: Well, my freshman year at nationals, I was just a little bugger. I was nervous. I missed out [disqualified] both of my horses. I covered both of them, but I missed them both out. I was just kind of jittery and it was nerve-wracking to kind of experience it. And then sophomore year when I experienced it, I was like, okay, I’m meant to be here. I can compete with these guys. Sophomore year went well. I made a

few mistakes and ended up fifth, but then last year, I knew I could win. I had it in my mind that I could do it, and not cocky at all but confidence. You’ve got to believe it if you want to do it.” NW: To have that success at nationals, and now you’re a senior, what’s the goal? CW: “Do it again. Do it again. I think there’s only been a couple guys to do it in the saddle bronc. Just to do it two years in a row would be a good accomplishment. And just know that it wasn’t just a fluke.” NW: A good chunk of Division 1 college athletes have come out of South Dakota. To be put on that list, what does that mean to you? CW: “My decision with college, University of Wyoming is pretty cool. The rodeo in Wyoming, they treat it as any other sport. It’s pretty cool. Set goals and achieve them. It’s a pretty big school and I hope I can get good enough grades to stay.” South Dakota 2019 State High School Rodeo Finals SDPB brings you highlights and results from the state rodeo finals, held in Belle Fourche, June 13-16.

SDPB1: Thursday, July 11, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB1: Sunday, July 13, 1pm (noon MT)

High School Rodeo: Labors of Love Ann Sundermann has been the Executive Secretary of the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association (SDHSRA) for 14 years. Sundermann and her husband Ann Sundermann. live near Baltic, SD, where they farm, raise cattle and horses, and run a manufacturing business. SDHSRA activities are largely volunteer run. The only full-time paid staffer, Sundermann helps coordinate 14 volunteer board directors, three host committee members, and between 50 to 100 volunteers who get over 300 state finals contestants up and running every June, as well as pitch in for the care and feeding of hundreds of horses, stock animals, family, and fans. Katy Beam: What does it take to get high school rodeo events off the ground? Ann Sundermann: “The SDHSRA board of directors and the host committee members are, I would say, your full-time volunteers. They plan everything, including the finals, but also the association rules, regulations, and any other events. All the directors’ spouses usually help in some way. The South Dakota Rodeo Association (SDRA), put on a fall rodeo for the kids. At the Black Hills Stock Show, the Suttons put on the high school extreme rodeo for the kids. State finals, of course, takes the most volunteers, and the host committee coordinates a lot of those volunteers. The SDHSRA gets a lot of volunteers as well.” KB: Where do your volunteer recruits come from? AS: “We all have our own bank of people if we need help for things. For registration, for gate-running. A person I think is amazing and has always helped run the gate in Belle Fourche, since finals have been there, is Mel Schmidt. She is out there in the heat of the sun and wind, from moon to moon. Mel calls on people willing to help. I’ve got my own little bank of people. The host committee folks, they recruit to be arena cleaners, bring the hay in,

Volunteers help ready riders and livestock at the gate.

all the behind the scenes stuff.” KB: Give us a sense of the volunteer time commitment involved with rodeo finals. AS: “I and another office worker arrive Sunday, the week before to start getting ready. Directors and host committee members arrive Monday to start setting up the arena, getting all the banners hung, prepping everything. South Dakota Farmers Union provides a kickoff meal and giveaway prizes. Everybody stays through the short go for sure. And then there’s some clean up, of course, that needs to be done afterwards. The national meeting and breakfast are held Sunday morning. The last of us leave Sunday afternoon.” KB: And everyone hunkers down at the grounds? AS: “The majority of our contestants and their families camp on the grounds, in their horse trailers, so they can be by their horses who are in stalls or pens they put up. Belle Fourche has beautiful grounds and a lot of room. People in the rodeo world tend to have their little encampments. They’ll circle trailers, have a fire at night, cook together, cheer each other on, help each other out. It’s kind of like living in little neighborhoods throughout the grounds.” KB: Long, hot days and camping at night. What do you think the volunteers get out of volunteering? AS: “It’s kind of in their blood.

I would have a hard time going to a rodeo and not just stepping in somewhere where it was needed. It’s probably that way in a lot of organizations, whether your passion be rodeo, basketball, softball. They just feel good about helping. They’ll do anything for the kids. And rodeo families will do anything they can to help their neighbor compete. Even though their own kid is competing against them. If a horse gets sick, or their equipment breaks, they’ll let them use theirs. Even though that might risk their own kid’s competition.” KB: The state finals move to Fort Pierre next year. What has it meant for Belle Fourche to host it since 2006? AS: “Belle Fourche has been wonderful. City employees, everyone, they have gone above and beyond to make it a good event for the kids. Each year when the state finals bids come up, for many years we’ve not had anybody else interested. This year we did have bids from other towns. So, we’re going to put on the best finals that everybody can for the kids and athletes this year in Belle Fourche. After that we’ll focus on the future.”

Volunteers bring their horses to help.

Good Morning and Good Luck, Gary Ellenbolt On behalf of SDPB’s listeners and supporters, we wish longtime Morning Edition host Gary Ellenbolt best wishes as he and his wife move on to new adventures in California. Gary and his wife Sandy are choosing to relocate to be near family, including a new granddaughter. Sandy also has a new job in institutional research compliance at a university. “Gary Ellenbolt has shown up each and every morning to do his job,” says Cara Hetland, SDPB Director of Radio. “ It’s a job he takes very seriously and professionally. He has kept South Dakotans informed on severe weather conditions, election

results, gas prices, high school sports and the news of the day – day in and day out. Gary has shared things he wonders about, interesting facts about places and people, and really bad puns. He was serious when he needed to be and when it was appropriate he attempted to be funny. Sometimes he succeeded and sometimes he made listeners groan. I appreciate all Gary has brought to SDPB and we wish him well with his new adventure in California. I will miss him. I know many in South Dakota will as well.” Best of luck to the Ellenbolts and thank you for your committed service to SDPB, Gary!

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: Woodstock, Three Days That Defined A Generation Woodstock turns the lens back at the audience, at the swarming, impromptu city that grew up overnight on a few acres of farm land. What took place in that teaming mass of humanity — the rain-soaked, starving, tripping, half-a-million strong throng of young people — was nothing less than a miracle of teamwork, a manifestation of the “peace and love” the festival had touted and a validation of the counter-culture’s promise to the world. Who were these kids? What experiences and stories did they carry with them to Bethel, New York that weekend, and how were they changed by three days in the muck and mire of Yasgur’s farm? In celebration of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary, Passport members can stream the film ahead of its August 6 broadcast premiere. Available July 15.

MASTERPIECE: Grantchester Season 4 Binge all five episodes of the latest season on the night of its broadcast premiere. Remember, Grantchester Seasons 1-3 are available now for catch-up streaming with SDPB Passport. Available July 14.

Molly of Denali Premieres on SDPB First nationally distributed kids series in U.S. features Alaska Native lead character

Molly of Denali, a new animated series from WGBH Boston and PBS KIDS debuts this month on SDPB1, SDPB4 (the 24/7 SDPB KIDS channel) and all PBS KIDS digital platforms. Molly of Denali is an action-adventure comedy that follows the adventures of feisty and resourceful 10-yearold Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native girl. Molly helps her mom and dad run the Denali Trading Post, a general store, bunkhouse, and transport hub in the fictional village of Qyah, Alaska. Each episode follows Molly, her dog Suki and her friends Tooey and Trini on their daily adventures in Alaska, from fishing to building snow forts to delivering a camera to friends on a volcano via dog sled. Molly of Denali is designed to help kids ages 4-8 develop knowledge and skills for interacting with informational texts. In each episode, Molly’s life and

adventures are enhanced, illuminated, and broadened by using and creating books, online resources, historic documents, indigenous knowledge from elders, maps, charts, photos, and more. Molly also shares the information that she gathers through a vlog, offering short-form videos in which she shares aspects of her life in Alaska with kids in the lower 48 states and around the world. One of the goals of the series is to bring Alaska Native voices into all production aspects, both on-and offcamera. A working group of Alaska Native advisors and consultants are working with WGBH. Princess Daazhraii Johnson (Neets’aii Gwich’in) producer and Fairbanks resident, is creative producer of the series. Molly of Denali will also feature Alaska Native voice talent in key roles, including the lead role of Molly, and Alaska Native scriptwriters. WGBH and its animation partner, Atomic Cartoons, will host Alaska Native interns for production and animation roles. “Molly of Denali showcases values paramount to all Alaskan Native cultures,” says Princess Daazhraii Johnson. “These values will be woven into each storyline and provide important learning moments. I’m especially excited that Alaska Native children will get to see themselves in Molly, who’s such an inspiring role model for all kids. The project’s Alaska Native advisors worked hard to ensure that our children will get to see our beautiful cultures in a respectful light.” Molly of Denali Series Premiere SDPB1: Monday, July 15, 7:30am (6:30 MT) & 3pm (2 MT) Molly of Denali airs weekdays on SDPB1 at 7:30am & 3pm and also on PBS KIDS 24/7 on SDPB4. Check listings at SDPB.org.

Sesame Street Introduces Character Who Lives with Foster Family Historically, PBS KIDS – from Mr. Rogers to Electric Company to Odd Squad have been at the forefront of ensuring that those who are chronically under-represented in the media are better represented. The education specialists and producers at PBS KIDS work mindfully to portray multiple cultures, abilities, and backgrounds – not merely in trite, surface ways, but as multidimensional characters with agency. From some of the first characters of color, to showing Buffy St. Marie (Cree Tribe) normalizing breastfeeding, to smart girls like Molly of Denali and kind-hearted boys like Elmo, to the autistic character Julia. Now Sesame Street is introducing you to Karli, who lives with her foster family. “My mom can’t be with me right now, even though she loves me

very much,” Karli tells Elmo in a scene titled “A Heart Can Grow.” It’s all part of Sesame Workshop’s new initiative to offer support to children, foster parents, and providers who serve foster families. Children in foster care often experience many transitions—from their separation from birth parents, to their placement in foster care, to many moves—and the new resources are designed to help children in crisis cope along the way.

In response to the introduction of Karli, social media is erupting with messages posted by fostering families reaching out to others who may be thinking about fostering. Kids who grew up in foster families are posting, “thank you for representing me.” The number of children in foster care in the US has grown for five consecutive years. In 2017, nearly 443,000 children spent time in foster care—6 out of every 1,000 children in the US. Every 47 seconds a child is abused or neglected, and children under age 6 made up nearly half of all child maltreatment cases in 2015. Over 40 percent of all children in foster care in 2016 were under age 6. Once again, Sesame Street and public media fill the gap. July July2019 2019 25 25
