Great Performances Broadway — Beyond the Golden Age SDPB1: Friday, Aug. 20, 7pm (6 MT) Filmmaker Rick McKay’s film Broadway: The Golden Age delighted theater fans with its compilation of intimate interviews with the stars of Broadway’s “Golden Age” in the 1940s and 50s, creating an invaluable first-hand archive of fascinating backstage stories and reminiscences. The insider’s history of Broadway from 1959 through the early 1980s captured the theater scene during a tumultuous time both onstage and off U.S. history. McKay was long at work compiling a sequel before his untimely death in 2018 disrupted its completion. But in great news for Broadway fans craving

theater after the long COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, a new team of producers has undertaken the film to finally bring it to fruition. Fit as Fiddles SDPB’s Fiddles and Friends returns this August with three live concerts. A fan favorite since its inception in 2015, Fiddles and Friends features the fiddlers three: Kenny Putnam, Tom Schaefer and Owen DeJong. This year the performances include vocalist Kaija Bonde and beloved backing musicians. Owen DeJong plays throughout South Dakota with the Poker Alice Band and the Public Domain Tune Band. Tom Schaefer is a former South Dakota State Fiddle Champion and belongs to several regional bands. Kenny Putnam is a member of the Red Willow Band and toured the United States as a member of Roy Clark’s band. Kaija Bonde is a vocalist with the harmony-rich East of Westreville and starred in Always, Patsy Cline.

“These three fiddle players have known each other a long time, are very accomplished in their own styles of professional music and in other careers, and these three guys are like our ‘Three Tenors,’ says Larry Rohrer, SDPB Director of Content and bassist. “It’s just magic. SDPB August Listings On April 2, 1936, when 22-year-old Jesse Owens entered the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, he was barely able to control his anger because of the insults that Hitler and the other German leaders had hurled at him and his teammates on the Olympic squad. The young athlete would channel his raw emotions into some of the most remarkable achievements in the history of athletics, winning four gold medals. American Experience Jesse Owens begins in the poor Cleveland neighborhood where the young athlete grew up; details his early career; describes Adolf Hitler’s outsized ambitions for the 1936 Olympics; explores the movement in Western democracies to boycott the event; and explains the pressures on Owens to attend, yet representing a country still so entrenched in racism. SDPB Education Specialist Steven “Science Steve” Rokusek develops resource materials for specific content areas and provides in-service training at schools and education conferences across South Dakota for both educational staff and parents. His engaging science demonstrations intentionally use everyday objects to make science accessible and fun for everyone. Originally from Tyndall, Rokusek graduated from Dakota State University with a degree in Biology and Computer Education. He has taught physics, physical science, anatomy, biology, and earth science. Reed Two Bulls, vocals & keys Douglas Two Bulls, guitar Dan Carroll, bass Micheal Two Bulls, drums According to founding member Micheal Two Bulls, The Wake Singers emerged in 2009 in Tewa territory (aka Santa Fe), metamorphosizing from Micheal and Douglas Two Bulls’ previous band called Chocolate Helicopter. Micheal says many iterations of the group have existed but he and Douglas have endured. Their younger cousin Reed Two Bulls has sung lead vocals for the past five years. Reed’s voice at the center of their Tiny Desk Contest entry “Mirrors over Skies” is notable – refreshingly lowpitched, unaffected, and somewhat reminiscent of 1980s/90s Concrete Blonde lead vocalist Johnette Napolitano. Reed’s throat-rich vocals, Douglas’s raw-toned guitar and the tune’s unrushed rhythm make for a pleasingly grainy texture: it’s atmospheric and broody in the “hurts so good” vein of the best basement rock love songs. To create “Mirrors over Skies,” the band says they packed up everything and spent a week writing and recording, intensely and intentionally, in Red Shirt Table. “It started out as a letter to someone I used to know,” says Douglas. “The last time I saw her I was taking her to the airport seven years ago. She wanted love; I wanted all tomorrow’s parties. It took me a long time to see what she meant.” That original letter gets delivered. The wistful music and lyrics encourage the listener toward play, pine, repeat. Each 18 18

Douglas says he gets his inspiration from Red Shirt Table. When not writing and recording there, the band members call Mni Luzahan Otunwahe (aka Rapid City) home. Reed was born in New York City, and lived in Los Angeles and Minneapolis before moving onto homelands. “I’m not separate

from my homelands,” says Micheal. “My homelands ground me and are present in everything I do and create.” Reed concurs: “Music and homelands will always be tied as one for me. The Wake Singers are blood. Family is Red Shirt Table, music is family.” Bassist Dan Carroll says he first fell in love with music as a passive and active participant in South Dakota. “As far as how it’s expressed? Probably me saying ‘ope’ a lot.” The band name sounds like what it is. Douglas and Micheal

say they imagined actual wake singers and thought of relatives who would do just that – sing at wakes for family. Rose, another member of Chocolate Helicopter, interpreted the band name as an invitation to awakening. Micheal says at this point in life, the name has an element of remembrance and commemoration of relatives who have passed on, often too young.

The members are working artists and musicians. Carroll is currently doing carpentry. Reed runs a hand-painted earring business. They practice in their recording/art studio and most of their performances have been virtual for the past year, but they’ll be playing the Native POP Festival in downtown Rapid City and other venues as the pandemic allows, as well as releasing their debut album.

Scott Tong has been named co-host the national live news program Here & Now. Tong debuts on-air August 9. Tonya Mosley and Robin Young also co-host. Tong has worked at WBUR’s Marketplace for more than 16 years, where he is a senior correspondent reporting on sustainability issues and the U.S.-China relationship. He was also Marketplace’s China bureau chief in Shanghai from 2006–10. He has guest-hosted the Marketplace podcast Make Me Smart and KQED’s Forum. Financial Times said Tong’s book A Village with My Name: A Family History of China’s Opening to the World (University of Chicago Press, 2017) “uses a radio journalist’s sense for sound and place to create a vivid and readable account.” Here & Now airs weekdays from 1pm-2pm (noon1pm MT) on SDPB Radio and SDPB.org. University of South Dakota alum and pole vault standout Chris Nilsen has qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Nilsen won gold at the Olympic Trials event in Eugene, Oregon to punch his ticket to the big show. He cleared 19-4 ¼ to win the competition. “I have been thinking of this day for the last five years, and even more so the last two months. It is such an honor to be able to represent

the University of South Dakota here on the big stage,” stated Nilsen. “Tonight, I get to go to bed as an Olympian.” “Coach [Derek Miles] told me, ‘Don’t think about pole vault, don’t think about winning, don’t think about top three – just go out there and have fun.’ That probably sounds cliché, but that was probably the only time he’s actually said that to me,” explained Nilsen. “After I won, he congratulated me and gave me a hug.”

Originally from Hubbell, Nebraska (population 44), the country music artist Lucas Hoge’s album Dirty South debuted at No. 5 on Billboard’s overall Country Albums chart. “To me, music is a universal language,” says Hoge. “It breaks down barriers for communication in other ways that normally you might not be able to communicate with that person or that group of people. But as soon as you start playing some music, it’s just a different language. It speaks to everyone.” Hoge regularly performs for U.S. troops overseas. With many family members in the military, but not feeling “wired” for the military himself, Hoge says he wants to give back by directly thanking and showing his appreciation to servicemen and servicewomen where they are stationed. “The loyalty, the dedication, the sacrifice, that all these men and women do for us is beyond compare. Getting to see exactly what they go through day in and day out intensifies my respect for what they do for us.”

Dallas Chief Eagle

Dallas Chief Eagle (Rosebud Lakota) is a K-12 art teacher with a Master’s degree in guidance counseling and personal services. A recognized hoop dancer, Chief Eagle presents and teaches stories, dances, and song that help people from all cultures navigate difficulties and face fears . “Our people were very good at developing songs, a language, and a way of life that was very close to nature,” says Chief Eagle. “It was interrupted, so what we are doing ourselves is we are re-emerging that part of our culture in our schools and in our homes.” Chief Eagle discusses the spirit that can be found in the world around us, including “Grandpa Rock,” a stone he uses to help students improve selfawareness and self-management exercises. “How does this rock teach us? It’s not moving, so we’re not going to move, we’re not going to make noise. I teach the students how to turn off all the channels in their brain and we go into spirit. Eventually, they can turn off their brain and their spirit gets most of the attention. Then we can start to see nature and other people as spirits and start treating them that way.”

Generation 9/11 follows seven young people who lost their fathers in the events of the catastrophic day in September of 2001. When they were born, the nation was drawn together. And now on the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, in a divided America, they enter adulthood with a sense of responsibility that stems from their own personal tragedy. Frontline In the Shadow of 9/11 tells the story of the so-called “Liberty City Seven” — a group of young Black men accused of assisting Al Qaeda in a plot to blow up buildings within the United States. The Liberty City Seven were not Muslims, had no weapons, and never communicated with anyone from Al Qaeda. Two were acquitted, while the other five were convicted and have since been released from prison. Before she assumed principal duties at Sioux Falls Lutheran School three years ago, Brenda Bernard worked as an elementary special education teacher and administrator for Sioux Falls Public Schools, including nine years as an early childhood administrator at Hawthorne Elementary School. She grew up on a farm south of Canton and attended the University of South Dakota. “Pretty much I have been a South Dakota girl all my life,” says Bernard. Bernard has been partnering with SDPB’s Early Learning Initiative to incorporate Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) into Sioux Falls Lutheran’s curriculum. “I was really excited to get connected

with Sesame Street in Communities. I noticed early on that we had very common goals in serving families, and the top three focus on helping families stay healthy and stay connected, and helping our teachers have access to high quality materials that are developmentally appropriate for the ages of kids we serve.” Bernard explains why Sesame Street in Communities is so impactful. “In our program, we spend a lot of time talking about brain development. Research tells us that learning is more likely to be stored in long-term memory when it’s paired with a high level of excitement or emotion, be it happy or sad. And who else has higher emotions than Elmo? And is so excited about learning? Part of why Sesame Street works so well is that we can intentionally insert a high level of emotion while we’re helping our kids learn or helping them to overcome something. We can be assured it will stick in their learning.” Kids respond to Sesame Street characters for multiple reasons, says Bernard, and Sioux Falls Lutheran plans to more fully integrate SSIC and SDPB’s early learning resources into their family nights and learning events this fall. “They really speak on a child’s level. There’s a level of trust that the kids have with these characters and a level of stability. We’re excited for our families to get connected and feel supported in helping their children. And it doesn’t take a purchased program that costs a lot of money.” “Sesame Street engages in what’s going on in current times and connects with families by paying attention to what is going on right now in the world. As I’ve worked in special education, I was thrilled to see the character Julia who has autism come to life to acknowledge and validate our families who have special needs. My daughter is 25 and has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. My personal connection is the characters who have a disability. When she was young, it was important for her to see other kids like her.”

Friends of SDPB Welcomes New Board Members Kara Flynn, Rapid City

Kara Flynn was born and raised in Sioux Falls and graduated from Lincoln High School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Latin American Studies from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in Geography from South Dakota State University. In 2004, she and her husband Leo moved their family to Rapid City. Kara has been an educational advocate for years, serving as the Executive Director of the Public School Foundation and as a school board member for RCAS. She is the current cochair of the Black Hills SDPB Sound Vision campaign. Kara, Leo and their sons Leo K. and Nathaniel enjoy skiing, hiking, paddle boarding and fly fishing in the Black Hills. Kara is an avid SDPB radio listener and takes pride in the fact that her boys listen to public radio in their cars too. “SDPB brings me the world and reminds me what it means to be a South Dakotan,” says Kara. “The value of SDPB is the community that it creates. It provides stories, music and now studios for people to gather together to learn from one another.”

Josh VanLaecken, Aberdeen

Josh VanLaecken is a full-time faculty member in Northern State University’s School of Business. He graduated summa cum laude with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accountancy and holds an active Certified Public Account (CPA) license. Prior to entering academia, Josh worked in both public and private accounting environments. He served a variety of clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to locally-owned small businesses; and, from energy, agricultural, and financial institutions to governments and nonprofits. Josh is married with two young children and enjoys spending time lifting and playing sports, reading, and working on various car, home and small electronics projects.

Roberta (Bobbie) Clark, Mitchell

Roberta (Bobbie) Clark is a Registered Nurse and holds a bachelor’s in business and an MBA from Sioux Falls University. She is a substitute nurse for the Mitchell School District. She has served on the Mitchell Main Street & Beyond Board, Avera Institutional Review Board, and for numerous other community organizations. She received the Mitchell Lion of the Year award in 2014 and 2018 and the George McGovern Service Award in 2013. “I have been a consumer of public broadcasting for many years and a member of the Friends of SDPB since 1979,” says Bobbie. “Listening to SDPB in the car and watching at home is a quality experience. My husband and I especially enjoy the Prairie Doc®, NOVA, South Dakota high school activities tournaments and the fundraising specials.” She and her husband Pat have been married for 46 years. They have two children and four grandchildren.

Rapid City’s Emily Graslie Co-Hosts New PBS Nature Series Emily Graslie, born and raised in Rapid City, announced she is back online and onscreen as a co-host of a new special limited series In Our Nature, as part of the PBS It’s Okay To Be Smart franchise found on the PBS Video App and Passport. The digital short-form documentary series explores how seemingly distant ecosystems, even half a world apart, are connected in surprising ways. Emily joins Trace Dominguez and It’s Okay To Be Smart host Dr. Joe Hanson looking at the universal rules of life that tie together Earth’s living ecosystem.

Episode one takes Emily back home to South Dakota as she travels to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to learn how the bison is being restored to the native prairie ecosystem and its people. She and co-hosts examine how large mammals like the bison in North America and the wildebeest in Africa are cornerstones to their respective grassland environments. In 2020, she made her broadcast television debut on PBS in Prehistoric Road Trip, an original three-part series exploring the paleontology and natural history
