Letter from the Publisher Welcome to February! I wish I was on Vacation. I booked tickets to Hawaii a couple months ago but stalled on reserving a place to stay and as we got close to the time of departure, we collectively decided it just wasn’t in the cards. So we canceled. I have a number of family members and friends traveling to their sunny destinations, many with young children so I decided to write a travel column anyway, despite our no-go trip. If you are traveling with children you know it’s no easy task, and if you are traveling without you know it’s not always pleasant to listen to a crying baby, fidgety toddlers or sassy kids. Here are some travel tips for those with kiddos. New Toys: several of my mom friends suggested that we get a few new toys for the trip and bring them out, one
by one on the plane. Keep the toy in it’s original packaging if at all possible so that unveiling it becomes apart of the process and takes up as much time as possible. Some good ones we like are magnetic blocks, stacking cups, stickers, and some window Suctioned toys. Personally I try to avoid “noise making” toys to try and spare other passengers, but sometimes the beeps and repetitive songs are better then the sounds of a bored or unhappy kiddo. Coloring: Kids love the process of coloring. From pulling the pens or pencils out of the box, taking off and putting the caps back on the markers and the actual coloring bit. They also enjoy drawing on themselves and surroundings as much as they do paper. Thank you wet wipes!
February Travel Music: It’s a nice way to drown out the chatter, and some kiddo headphones are a must so they can rock out without sharing their playlist with the rest of the plane. IPads/Kindle: Ehhh… I hope you can sense my enthusiasm, or lack there of. Personally, I have a somewhat negative knee jerk reaction to screen time, and am not a fan of introducing electronics to my kiddo but sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures. Load it with educational games and a few cartoons. Snacks: Who doesn’t love snacks. A wide variety of healthy snacks goes a long ways and can be fun and exciting to pick and choose from. One mom suggested bringing some sort of organizational tupperware to organize the snacks so they are arranged in a pleasing manner and can be mixed, matched or resorted by your toddler. Car seat: I’ve had this internal debate over checking or carrying a car seat. I’ve learned that this is a personal choice varying from child to child. Personally, unless it’s in a vibrating, music playing car, my kid isn’t thrilled about being strapped in and we check ours. Some kiddos however find comfort in their car seat, it’s familiar and can feel secure to them while they are traveling in a new and unfamiliar environment. Carrier: Since I have small children, I don’t go anywhere without my Tula. Depending on the age of your child, any sort of soft carrier or wrap or even a stroller will do. It saves time if you’re running to your gate and don’t have the time to wait for a walking toddler. And for older kids, make them walk by all means, burn that energy! Books: There’s something magical about books. You can have smart devices with all the bells and whistles

that reads and animates for you and it still wont compare to a parent or loved one reading aloud. Your child loves that you are participating with them, so put down your phone and join in. The Role of the Doula Everyone wants to feel loved. It is a human condition that cannot be ignored and is crucial to our well-being. What if you could have complete, unbiased support from another, during the most delicate time of your life? Take pregnancy and birth for example. Our view of pregnancy and birth is skewed by what we see on television, social media and a culture taught that pregnancy and child birth is a condition, not a natural process. How does a woman overcome these fears, reduce her anxieties and find continuous support throughout the process? This is where a doula comes in.

Partners are also benefited by the doula, as they provide answers, ease anxieties and allow the partner to rest, knowing the laboring woman is under constant care. The doula may offer suggestions to the partner to help the laboring woman, engaging the partner as they feel comfortable during the birth process. Physical support includes comforting touch, massage, breathing techniques, counter pressure and suggestions for positions. A skilled doula can suggest these positions to aid a malpositioned baby in navigating the mothers pelvis and safely arriving into a mother’s embrace. After baby is born, a doula can help initiate breastfeeding and continue breastfeeding support through postpartum. The birth of a child means the birth of a mother. Everyone wants a healthy baby, but not everyone understands the importance of a healthy minded mother. Especially if there were complications throughout pregnancy, delivery and postpartum, the doula can help the mother process these events in a healthy, productive way.
Our society often focuses on the face value of pregnancy and motherhood. We admire the perfect round pregnant belly, a smiling woman holding her content newborn, losing pregnancy weight fast after baby is born, quickly returning to work postpartum, and maintaining a perfectly spotless home. This is not always realistic and can impose much unnecessary pressure on a mother. In the United States one in nine mothers experience postpartum depression. (Depression Among Women, CDC article https:// www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/ depression/index.htm).
