Fur Babies and Winter Weather
November is all about the start of winter for me. The beginning of the snowy season means spending time winterizing various things and necessities. We do our vehicles by replacing our regular tires with studs, we also prepare by digging out the snow shovels and snowblower. We shut house vents and dust off our winter clothes and gear. Another thing that we do in our household is brainstorm alternative things for our cat to do when he cannot adventure outside for as many hours as he does the rest of the year. Our cat Tron is one outdoorsy cat. He loves to be outside regardless of the weather. Seasonally, the issue is with heavy snow there are less places for him to explore. I do keep a close eye on him because he ventures where areas are plowed, meaning the streets and driveways. Tron is very adventurous and from the moment we got him we

weeks I would stay inside glued to the window and wouldn’t take my eyes off him and when he ventured too far, I’d run outside and shake the treat bag so he’d return. I never go to sleep without making sure he is inside at night, even if that means calling him and shaking the treat bag until he comes home at 3am, yes this has happened a couple times. That being said, we’ve tried hard to establish property boundaries for Tron but he still ventures into the woods and into other people’s driveways.
knew he was an outdoor cat. We kept him inside for the first four months of his life and it was no easy feat. He’d bolt for the door anytime someone came in or went out. We’d have to plan exit strategies and hang signs on the doors warning people not to let the little escapee out. When we felt like it

was appropriate for Tron to see the great outdoors we put him on a leash and harness and walked him daily for the entire summer to establish home boundaries for him. We then let him out off the leash but stayed outside with him and then finally we let him out on his own, for the first few
Now back to winterizing the cat; my husband and I have a number of games we play with Tron and we’ve found it’s funny that pets choose the cheapest non-pet things to keep themselves entertained. Tron’s favorite thing is something we call “mint-ing him.” We take a dinner mint that’s wrapped in crinkly plastic and slide it back and forth on the floor between
us. Tron loves the sounds of the wrapper and chases it. We will throw in a bounce here and there and he will stop at nothing to tackle and subdue that mint. Then when that becomes monotonous we move to the laser pointer on the carpeted stairs, we race him up and down as many times as he will go, treating him at the end of the session of course. Tron also likes to play tag for very short periods of time and only likes to be the tagger. He occasionally
will fetch a crumpled up piece of paper. Our daughter is old enough now to help play with Tron. We give her a long rope and she walks it all around the house with Tron tagging behind chasing and bouncing it. Also, for being a cat, he sure loves certain forms of water, he hates a bath but loves snow and ice cubes. Anytime anyone puts ice in his or her cup from the dispenser on the fridge he makes a dash for it. Once given a piece of ice, he chases it all over the house until it’s lost forever under the stove or fridge. When the holidays come around he likes to “help” wrap presents and he especially loves boxes. When we get something new that comes in a box we don’t immediately recycle it but leave it out in the living room for Tron to jump in, explore and spontaneously pop out of. And, if all else fails to keep him entertained there’s always catnip... a little catnip on his cat tree or the floor and he’s occupied and then sleepy for at least a little while.

TIPS FOR KEEPING KIDS (BPT) - With all the distractions on today's roads, parents are feeling increasingly anxious about keeping their children safe while driving. According to a new study by Volvo Car USA and The Harris Poll, more than six in ten American parents believe roads today are more dangerous than ever, and are actively seeking guidance on how to properly protect their loved ones when they're on-the-go. To help parents overcome their anxiety around child safety on the road, Volvo Car USA and Britax, two leaders in the field, worked together to curate helpful tips to keep children protected from harm and give peace of mind to parents everywhere. Parents are
overwhelmed when researching child safety products. Parents have never had more options or information available to help them make decisions, yet for nearly two-thirds of parents, this is causing more confusion and stress. Almost all new parents (97%) find it overwhelming to research products - with 58% citing car seats specifically as a product they are seeking more guidance on how to install and use properly. Tip 1: Keep children in rear-facing car seats as long as possible. In some states, children are required by law to sit rear-facing until a certain age. However, that does not mean they should move to a forward-facing seat immediately when they come of age. Safety experts recommend children remain rear-facing until reaching the maximum height or weight restrictions for that seat. Rear-facing seats spread crash forces more evenly across the back of the car seat. Besides keeping children rear-facing as

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly three in five (59%) car seats are installed incorrectly. One of the most common misconceptions in car seat installation is that utilizing both the LATCH system and safety belt together adds a layer of protection, when in fact, it's not recommended by most car seat and vehicle manufacturers. Read both the seat instructions and vehicle owner's manual to determine the best way to install the car seat and ensure the seat does not move more than one inch side-to-side or frontto-back at the belt path once installed. Parents are distracted when driving with children. Two-thirds of parents surveyed said they often feel distracted while driving with children. About one in three parents reported children throwing a tantrum or getting sick while they were driving, leading them to shift their focus away from the road. As a result, one in four new
parents said they unintentionally ran over a curb while driving with children, while one in five admitted to getting into a fender bender with their child in the car. Tip 3: Avoid reaching into the back seat while driving. Whether you're reaching for an item, consoling a child or breaking up an argument, it's safer to pull over and address the issue than to take your eyes off the road, even when stopped behind stalled traffic, at a stop sign or traffic signal. Better to arrive at your destination late than to end up in an accident. Parents also said they've experienced children throwing a toy (22%) or food (18%) at them from the backseat while they were driving. Tip 4: Secure items inside the car. Limiting the number of items accessible to children in the back seat not only to makes it less likely to have an unexpected item hurled at the driver, but also prevents the possibility of items becoming projectiles that could harm passengers in the event of a crash. Juneau Public Market features vendors who sell décor items and artwork that can add character and personal touches to a recently purchased home. This, the 37th annual Public Market, will again host dozens of vendors offering art, photos, hangings, and stained glass. But let’s look at the kitchen—often the first renovation target of new homeowners. Many Public Market vendors will offer utensils, pottery, and food products that can add personal, Alaska-flavored accents and scents to your kitchen.
Stoked Beekeeping Co. of Homer returns for their second year at the Public Market offering raw honey from the wildflower and fireweed fields of South Central Alaska. Simply displaying the jars of the clear, amber-colored honey will add that “only in Alaska” ambiance to a kitchen, but it is the taste of the product that truly amazes. “Fireweed is my favorite,” says James Reid, who owns the company with his sister Ana. “It is uniquely delicate, what we call the ‘champagne of honey.’ Fireweed honey is hard to find because it is hard to produce. It is a smooth honey with unmistakable floral notes, and it dissipates quickly. But there are those who prefer our more traditional honey that comes from Sitka rose, yarrow, goldenrod, and blueberry blooms, a diverse honey that produces a super unique, complex flavor.” Ana and James maintain about 100 hives that they positioned this past summer amid pristine alpine meadows of South Central. Goat Cheese And Berries Tarts
Recipe
Makes 4
For the goat cheese mousse:
For the pate sablee:
¾ cup heavy cream, cold
2 tablespoons slivered almonds
4 oz goat cheese, at room temperature
1/4 cup sugar, divided 1/2 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature pinch of salt 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 egg yolk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup sugar, depending on your preference juice and zest of half a lemon or a touch of orange ¾ teaspoon vanilla or scrape of ¼ vanilla bean 2 cups assorted berries such as raspberries, red currants, blueberries, etc...
Prepare the pate sable: Preheat oven to 350F. Place almonds and 2 tablespoons sugar in a food processor. Pulse until the nuts are finely ground. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter, vanilla bean seeds, groundnuts and salt on medium speed until wellcombined. Slowly add the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar and flour and mix well. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract and mix until incorporated. Shape the dough into a ball and flatten into a disc. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for two hours or overnight. Contributed by Amber King
Pate Sable the original Sablee su-sarthe near Le Man’s is the French origins of this soft crumb pastry dough with high butter and low ratio egg, much like shortbread but added in the ground nuts. There might be other reasons why its name is “sablée” though: in French, “sable” means “sand“, and this tart dough happens to have a sandy (“very crumbly”) texture when baked. Moreover, the kneading method is called “sablage” as well, since it involves making a coarse “sand” by mixing flour and cold diced butter. This recipe is a great easy recipe, that makes beautiful bases to cover in fruits and berries. While this one is with traditional berry mix including currants (love white ones if you can find them) you can also cover with a stone fruit or apple/pear/cranberry compote as well. They look amazing on a tray and work well for dinner parties, Thanksgiving extras and a great fall dish with a classic tart. From my table to yours -- enjoy! Place the dough in between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper and roll it out to about 1/8-inch thick. Cut out four 6- inch rounds and fit them inside four 4- inch tartlet rings, patting the dough in with your fingertips if it breaks on you as you transfer the rounds. Gather the scraps and set aside. Prick the dough with a fork and refrigerate 30 minutes. Bake for 18-20 minutes until edges are lightly browned. Preheat the oven to 350F. Place a piece of parchment paper inside the tart shells, fill with beans or pie weights. Bake the shells for 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool completely on wire racks and remove the pie weights. Prepare the goat cheese mousse: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the cream to medium-stiff peaks and reserve it in the refrigerator while you prepare the mousse. In a medium bowl, whisk together the goat cheese and sugar with a spatula (if the goat cheese is soft enough there is no need to put your mixer to use on that one). Add the lemon zest and juice and mix thoroughly until incorporated. Carefully fold the reserved whipped cream into the goat cheese base by placing your spatula in the center of the bowl, scooping the bottom over the top. Fill tart shells with goat cheese mousse and refrigerate for 2 hours or freeze covered up to one month. Cover in fresh berries and serve.
