And just like that, it’s October. The month of day and night sideways rain cut in half by Alaska Day and finished with Halloween, and Halloween means the start of the holiday season! Now that we have two kiddos at home, we are getting excited for all the holidays we get to relive through a child’s eyes. And now that we are a little more “experienced” parents, I have some Trick-or-treating tips to share with you.
Costumes
The warmer the better, costumes that is. Let’s face it, we live in Alaska -- even if it’s not raining or snowing, it’s still gonna be chilly. Incorporate longsleeves into a

princess dress, pad that spiderman outfit and get some hand warmers. Or do the opposite, let’em get cold and cut your trick-or-treating short! Hey, why haven’t I been doing that?! In all seriousness, nothing stops fun like being cold and wet.
Location
If you don’t want to chance the weather, there are a number of indoor activities to attend, but they can be very busy so plan accordingly. In year’s past the malls, field house and schools have participated in some type of Halloween or Autumn themed festival. It’s a great way to stay dry, and have your kiddo burn some candy-fueled energy with other children.
Influence
I know we want to live through our children but this is one of the only nights, if not the only night a year they get to dictate exactly what they want to be. My husband and I are guilty of that in our house. “I want to be a princess...” “But wouldn’t you’d rather be something scary like a ghost?...” That being said, when they are really

young and aren’t quite sure what’s going on, dictate away, we did!

Glowsticks, flashlights, reflectors. Even though most people know it’s Halloween and are extra vigilant about being aware of the littles walking around, being easier to see never hurts.
Safety Education
There’s a lot about this holiday that allows for a great teaching platform. Educating our children to be observant and watch out for traffic is so important, not just on Halloween but all the time. Teach them to pay attention to their surroundings, to remember details that stick out to them in case they get lost or need to describe a location later for some reason. I always ask that my kiddo doesn’t eat any candy she collects until I can inspect it to the best of my ability and make sure everything looks “ok.” Continued on PAGE 8

Allergies
Put a bowl of candy out, but also a bowl of something that isn’t for eating. There are a lot of kiddos who want to participate in trick-or-treating but have allergies to nuts, wheat, lactose and so on. Costco usually has some great non-candy options. Last year we put out a bowl of miniature containers of play-dough.
Respect
Teaching kiddos to only take a piece or two of candy and to also be respectful of the decorations around other people’s houses. I’ve been the recipient of smashed pumpkins and people who empty the entire bowl of goodies into

Leftover Candy
There are a number of businesses that take leftover Halloween candy for a good cause. Or there’s always the option of donating it to the good’ol office breakroom, but not everyone is a fan of that. I’ve heard of a number of recipes that incorporates candy into cookies, muffins, or ice cream... Or just shove it in a drawer, forget about it like I do and throw it away in 2-4 years. Even when in-person contact is brief, it can go a long way toward helping people feel connected and more like friends than strangers. 2) Take new neighbors housewarming gifts. Make newcomers feel wanted and welcome by acknowledging their arrival with a thoughtful gift. One meaningful and sure-to-be-welcome idea is a beautifully fragranced soy candle from Bright Endeavors, a Chicago-area nonprofit that employs young mothers. Every purchase helps empower young women by teaching them job training and giving them the skills needed to gain permanent employment and provide for their children. Or choose from a wide variety of local vendors and artists. 3) If your new neighbors are new to being local, give them contact info for neighbors and neighborhood amenities. services, doctors’ offices, dentists, schools, babysitters, entertainment options, sources of great takeout food, dry cleaners and any other assets you think may be helpful. People will appreciate your insider view into local amenities, and they’ll be more likely to communicate key information to others if their contact info is readily available. 4) Organize a neighborhood event. It could be as simple as a front-porch open house or as strategically planned as a neighborhood cleanup, but any gathering that brings people together to socialize is bound to create goodwill and a friendlier neighborhood vibe. 5) Stay aware of who needs help. When possible, organize meal delivery, dog walking, transportation or other assistance for neighbors going through tough times. Teaming up to help others may make your neighbors feel more connected, and people on the receiving end of such kindness tend to pay it forward. 6) Live by the golden rule. Treat your neighbors as you would like to be treated. Clean up after pets and kids, drive through at reasonable speeds, don’t be overly loud, mow at reasonable hours, return anything you’ve borrowed and generally stay aware of how you’re coming across to others. It feels good to live in a neighborhood that feels more like a community than an anonymous collection of strangers. Consider how you can take the initiative to create warmth and peace within your own neighborhood.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Combine pears, juice, and nutmeg in a large bowl; toss well. Add brown sugar and flour; toss gently. Arrange fruit on dough leaving a 2-inch border. (Pears will be piled high on dough.) Fold edges of dough toward center; pressing gently to seal (dough will only partially cover pears). Bake at 400° for 30 minutes or until crust is lightly browned (filling may leak slightly during cooking). Add the burnt sugar topping at the very end and sprinkle with more cheese for the last few minutes of cooking. Cool galette on a wire rack.
