Good Neighbors

Letter from the Publisher

vehicles at all hours of the day and night.

Welcome to the new year! This month while struggling to come up with a topic to write about I was staring out my office window and watched my neighbors walk by with their pup. And then it clicked. I’ll write about my neighborhood and what it means to be a good neighbor.

Vehicle Safety: because we live in an area with lots of families, many with small children it is also important to us that everyone drives at a reasonable speed and is cautious and on the lookout for kids and/or pets. We, in turn have educated our kiddos to watch out for cars, to stay in the yard and to always to go the side of the road when encountering a vehicle.

First and foremost everyone wants respectful neighbors. And I am lucky to say that we have a very respectful neighborhood. There are a few key components in my opinion to being a good neighbor, and here they are. Noise: Noise is the number one thing that I hear people most often complain about. Loud music, fireworks, power tools at unreasonable hours. Luckily this is something I’ve never had to worry about in my immediate neighborhood. We live in an area

with a lot of families so bedtimes and daytime noise dies down at relatively the same time in every house. On the occasional holiday where parties and noise level is usually an exception, we still have never had any complaints.

Knowledge. Getting to know your neighbors is beneficial in many ways. You get to live next to potential friends instead of strangers. You look out for each other. When someone’s animal escapes their fence, you can confidently put their doggo back in instead of calling animal control. When mail is mis-delivered, I trust

Our house does however back up to Thunder Mountain which amplifies the valley’s noises, and I must say I don’t understand how some people have any eardrums left after driving with their bass so loud in their

Surveillance: Like I mentioned before, I watch unfamiliar vehicles that come down our street, review our security cameras and keep a close eye on strangers in the area. It’s also nice to know that my neighbors do the same. I’ve sent and received texts about the various wildlife venturing around the properties. We’ve texted about bears, deer, and eagle babies in surrounding yards.

my neighbors to hold onto it and/or bring it to the house and of course I will do the same. Since I am home most of the day, I see all the goings on and take notice of unfamiliar vehicles. I’ve texted neighbors asking if “description-of-person” is supposed to be on their property. I’ve reviewed our security cameras for others when something goes missing and so on. Also knowing more about your neighbors and their professions

are helpful. We are lucky enough to have two different neighbors who are in the medical field. I’ve knocked on their door when I thought Ari ate an unidentified berry from the woods and she stayed with me while I called poison control. It’s comforting to know that if something were to happen at home, I could potentially have access to someone with medical knowledge.

House Sitting: Because we’ve gotten to know some of our neighbors on a trustworthy level, it makes going out of town a breeze. We have a high school aged neighbor who is an awesome, responsible kid and she checks in on our house and gives our cat lots of love when we are out of town. We also feel comfortable letting everyone know we are going to be gone and to keep an eye on things. Helping Hand: I’ve literally borrowed a cup of sugar from my neighbors, as well as candles for carved pumpkins, soy sauce, tools. On occasions when I ambitiously pull out too much fish

from the freezer I can always count on my nearby resident to accept some of our bounty. A neighborhood is essentially a small community. If everyone contributes, is respectful then a bond will form. If you haven’t already gotten to know your neighbors or neighborhood and you want to, there are a couple of ways to do so. We did a get together where everyone brought their favorite soup. If that’s not your jam you could always start a neighborhood Facebook Group, or start a group text. And with all that said, you can’t always have good neighbors. There will always be someone who isn’t respectful, doesn’t play nice or live a healthy life. And for that, I am sorry to them and to those around them. Happy New Years to you and your neighbors! DON’T LET WINTER SPORTS INJURIES (BPT) - For many people, dropping temperatures mean it's time to bundle up and head outdoors for their favorite winter activities. Whether you're a sports enthusiast hitting the ski slope, a casual skater heading to the local rink or a parent ready to tackle the nearby sledding hill with your child, great times and memories await. However, it's important to make sure your fun winter day isn't spoiled by an accident or injury. "Winter sports and recreational activities have great health and cardiovascular benefits," says Joseph Bosco, M.D., FAAOS, orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and first vice president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. "However, it's important not to underestimate the risks that cold weather can bring. Hospitals and health care clinics across

the country see an increase of bone and joint injuries related to winter activities, and many could be prevented with the right planning and preparation." Injuries can happen to anyone at any time, whether you're on the ice or on the slopes. You don't have to be an extreme athlete to experience the risks. Common winter sports injuries include sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures, but more traumatic injuries to the head and spine can also occur. Consider these tips from Dr. Bosco and the experts at the AAOS. Be prepared: Keep in shape and condition muscles before participating in winter activities. What's more, on the day of your activity, warm up thoroughly before playing outdoors. Cold muscles, tendons and ligaments are vulnerable to injury. Finally, have ample supplies ready, including water for before, during

and after activities. Dress correctly: Always wear well-fitting protective gear, including goggles, helmets, gloves and padding. Wear several layers of light, loose and waterand wind-resistant clothing for warmth and protection. Finally, proper footwear that provides warmth, dryness and ankle support is key. Know the rules: Know and abide by all rules of the sport in which you are participating. If you're new or need a refresher, consider taking lessons from a qualified instructor, especially in sports like skiing and snowboarding. Learning rules of the hill and skills like falling correctly and safely can reduce the risk of injury. Watch the weather: Pay attention to warnings about upcoming storms and severe drops in temperature. Seek shelter and medical attention

immediately if anyone is experiencing hypothermia or frostbite. Make sure everyone is aware of proper procedures for getting help, if injuries occur. Use common sense: Never participate in an outdoor sport or activity alone. If you become injured, you need someone to help you and respond appropriately so you can get necessary medical care. What's more, if you become exhausted or start to feel pain, stop the activity for the day to avoid injury. "Don't let winter sports injuries freeze your fun," adds Dr. Bosco. "By keeping in good physical condition, staying alert and stopping when you're tired or in pain, you can enjoy the best of winter and reduce your risk of injury." New Year Detox

Each

year we think about healthy resolutions and how we can better care for our bodies as we age. I thought it might be a good idea to put out some cleanse information, I’ve recently had a few people asking me about it, especially after the holidays and people are looking for ways to give their bodies a break from the rich foods of the holidays. We do a lot of work to keep our kitchens, our cars and the outside of our bodies clean but we rarely put much thought regarding the insides. If you are like me and are working hard to feed yourself and your family nutritious and clean foods, you still have a toxic overload in your body due to environmental toxins. Most importantly non-organic food sources play huge roles in our body’s natural abilities to detox from normal environmental dangers, heavy metals in particularly can wreak havoc on the cellular level with mitochondria under attack and endocrine system, including shikimate pathway (which regulates essential aromatic amino acids, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan,

Mono Fasting is when you only consume one type of fruit for an extended period of time, although you are still eating food you are giving your digestive system a break by eating simply and avoiding food combining. Whether you pick one food for a meal, or time of day or the same food every day it’s gives your body a chance to catch up and spend more time on the body than processing complicated dishes, as a chef this would be my purgatory. Some of the benefits are it forces you to eat a higher quality of foods, since you wouldn’t pick the overripe banana if you were only eating bananas on Tuesdays, you would also know when it’s time to stop eating, you can only eat so many avocados, even though I’m sure I’ve pushed this boundary more than once, but avoiding the guacamole additives and well I eat far less. It’s the only way to know for sure how your body reacts to certain foods. With so many allergies and sensitivities out there, if you think something you are eating is too much, the only way to know is to reduce your options and find out which one is to blame. (The most common allergenic foods are Dairy, Yeast, Wheat, Gluten, Soy, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Shellfish, and Fish) You have a much greater appreciation for the foods that you do eat, growing up commercial fishing this is by far the best. Water Fasting is where one only consumes water for an extended period of time, this is the most powerful form of fasting, and must be under the supervision of a qualified fasting expert and medical attention, not for the faint of heart by any means. While this was the ancient philosophers’ favorites of the likes of Plato, Da Vinci and Aristotle, and has been done for thousands of years it carries serious implications compared to our modern toxic soup of life. It is recommended only if you have a serious health condition and need 110% impact and can commit to medical supervision. There are also modifications of using bone broths as well. Oxygen Colon Cleanse, this is one of the best natural detox methods, a six or seven day cleanse using distilled water, organic raw apple cider vinegar (ACV), aloe vera juice, Oxy-powder and probiotics. Basically it’s a week-long cleanse where you eat small frequent healthy meals during the day (mostly raw and fresh) and drink half your body’s weight in water ounces adding in a Tablespoon of Organic (with the mother) Apple Cider Vinegar, abstaining from coffee, dairy, alcohol, and all other beverages. Recommended Fruits are Apples, Avocados, Bananas, Blackberries, Grapefruit, Oranges, Pineapples, Raspberries, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Watermelon and White Grapes, organic raw nuts and seeds and deep rich green leafy salads. The Oxy-Powder works with your body’s stomach acid to help cleanse the colon by using oxygenating action to remove impacted waste and toxic matter. http://www.oxypowder.com/research, it is best to avoid fiber capsules (usually psyllium husk) anthraquiones and two herbal supplements Sascara sagrada and Senna, they are far too powerful for the human body and much better at creating hydrogen peroxide or making paper. Sticking to herbal teas, fennel seed, licorice root, milk thistle and dandelion are much better remedy. How do I know it’s working? are incredibly important and make sure they are also organic, most are not. • Drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily, more if you consume foods known to dehydrate • Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your body. • Transform stress into positive emotions and actions • Hydrotherapy, the practice of taking very hot showers, followed by cold water, back and forth

After a cleanse or detox program it’s important to ease back gently into life, start regular foods slowly and with a food journal, keep in tune with how your body is reacting to the food you are feeding it. Don’t lose sight of it! • Eat light, “breakfast” is the “break the fast” and your stomach will shrink while fasting, start small and simple and hopefully healthier from here on out • Chew your food slowly and savor the moment. • Embrace yourself, love yourself unconditionally, say it out loud, write it, whatever you need daily. • Take bitters and herbs to protect the liver such as dandelion root, burdock, milk thistle, Bush flower essence, spirulina, chlorella, seaweeds/greens and green tea • Take your vitamins, Vitamin C (which helps produce glutathione) and vitamin B’s and Omega oils

• Exercise, that’s right you need regular exercise, daily walks, cardio, sports, yoga, whatever you can do get out there and start soon!
