Letter from the Publisher July is the month I consider the middle of summer. All the summer activities are in full swing. Camps are started, we celebrate Independence Day, summer sports are half way over, we’ve all gotten our first sunburns by now and for me personally it is the month of my firstborn’s birth. I am in awe of most of my friends who plan awesome parties for their kiddos. By the time July rolls around I am in an all out panic because I didn’t order party favors, let alone think of a theme (I am ashamed to say her birthday has been Ninja Turtle themed quite a few times… and she’s turning four), or done any cute crafting projects I often see at parties. I also haven’t thought far enough ahead as to secure a venue. We are lucky in that we have a home that can accommodate everyone we need to but it’s crowded. I usually cannot hear myself think, it gets humid with all the extra bodies, we don’t have enough counter space for the last minute pizza order and god forbid it rains and then we cannot

utilize the yard. I see several inquires on social media regarding where to host various events and it got me to thinking, I should assemble a venue list. Location in Juneau often depends on the weather, and anyone who has lived here knows that the weather is not predictable nor is it dependable. If I could have my way, it would be partly cloudy all the time and every event would be outdoors. That being said, it usually isn’t sunny so there is a need for shelter and depending on what time of year, a need for heat. Beach Pavilions: There are a number of beach pavilions in Juneau which include Sandy Beach, Auke Rec, Lena Beach, and Eagle Beach to name a few. Some of these locations are rent-able, and some are first come first serve. Pros: Scenery is beautiful, and it’s FREE! Cons: Wind and rain can make it less than comfortable. Plus you have to haul everything in and out. Field House: I recently went to an

Party Planning event at the Dimond Park Field House that was spectacular. They rented Bouncy Houses, had a photo booth, set up tables for food and drinks upstairs and my kiddo was absolutely exhausted after this fun affair, which is a major accomplishment. Gymnastics Academy: We are lucky enough that our house backs up to this facility. It’s a great place again for kids to run around, you don’t have to worry about the weather and there’s all sorts of fun equipment to use. Diamond Park Aquatic Center: Going to the pool always gets the kiddos excited. I don’t think I was ever more hungry and tired when I was a kid as I was after a pool party. Now, normally you don’t rent the whole pool. You rent one of the rooms they have available for private events. Send the kids with the masses, feed them sugar and send’em home! Whale Sculpture: This one is new to me and I’ve never actually done it. There is a small pavilion with a grill and covered tables, and the scenery cannot be beat! You don’t have any control over the weather or how many people are visiting the area so it may not be an ideal place for a large party but it sure is beautiful. School Gyms: Many of the gymnasiums at the public schools are available for rent. This is again another great way to fit a lot of people in a large space, and expend energy to equalize the sugar kids usually consume at parties. Though I’ve not rented a gym yet, I imagine there is equipment that can be used such as balls and gym related things. Even if there isn’t, it’s not too hard to find beach balls, rent a bouncy house, and get some large scale games like twister going. 24 hour excursions: There are a number of cabins that can be rented for smaller parties. This is very ambitious and there is no way I’d do it with a group of four year olds but it would be fun for an older, more mature group. Cabins range anywhere from big hikes to rustic cabins, or drive up to luxury accommodations. I’ve attended a number of parties at rent-able “cabins”

located at the Shrine and it has always been a big success. The lodging is gorgeous, you can do a day party or an overnight party and it’s just a fun, unique way to celebrate. Planning Ahead: Not only do you have to rent a space ahead of time, unless you plan on doing it at your house or on the beach, there are other things to consider, such as party favors, games, the cake, and all that jazz. Our family tradition has always been a store bought ice cream cake, which is fine with me. I am always amazed by the moms who make beautiful cakes from scratch. If I do get my act together, I usually order small party favors online, in bulk and then buy bulk candy at the store. Party favors are the best kept secret to getting your emotionally drained, sugar crashed kid to leave a party. Again, if I have my ducks in a row, I will order party decor online, and if not, I will go into my storage bin of old party decorations and wing it, hello Ninja Turtles! I’m lucky enough that my soon to be four year old isn’t picky, and just gets excited and happy that she’s being celebrated and she doesn’t get to hung up on the decore. Yet... 7 Tips for a Positive First-Time Cannabis Experience With the legalization of cannabis, many people are considering the plant – and with a head full of questions. Maybe you’ve never tried it, or perhaps it’s just been so long that jean styles have gone out and come back again. Either way, I’ve got some advice to help ensure that you have a positive experience. Many people are missing out on the benefits of cannabis because they’ve had a negative time in the past and fear repeating it, but that’s absolutely avoidable. I’ve earned much of my cannabis wisdom the hard way, as I have a couple of health conditions and depend on it to control the symptoms; but I also had the pleasure of doing the marketing for a California dispensary, and now get to write about cannabis for all kinds of companies. (Though I definitely learned to appreciate it in Juneau, long long ago.)

Alright, here’s what you need to know when getting acquainted with this powerful herb: Don’t eat it and absolutely do NOT dab. Though no one has ever died from a cannabis overdose, it can be very unpleasant to get too high and the experience can last for some time. This is especially true in the case of edibles, which often also cause dosing confusion as they can take a considerable amount of time to activate. For smoke-free partaking, try letting a tincture dissolve under your tongue. Start low and go slow. And dabbing is for high tolerances only! If you’re new to cannabis and someone offers you a blow torch, ‘just say no’ definitely applies. You have an endocannabinoid system. The job of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is to find homeostasis within the body, which basically means balance – to

put it simply, it makes sure various processes are working just right. Our bodies make small molecules called endocannabinoids that fit into the ECS like keys into locks. And, as it turns out, cannabinoids (a compound from the cannabis plant) also fits into these receptors. There are cannabinoid receptors all over your body, concentrated in the brain and spinal cord, but also within many other bodily systems. This is how cannabis is able to treat a wide variety of ailments. Your ECS will grow more receptors after you partake. Many people don’t get high the first time they smoke, and the reason is that they don’t have very many receptors to take advantage of all the cannabinoids coming in. But your body will actually create more receptors after you try it, enabling you to enjoy more of the plant’s benefits and effects. (So don’t feel like you’re ready to dab if you don’t get high

It’s created when THC is exposed to light and/ or air; so if you have really old sativa buds, they’re probably going to feel more like an indica. Due to its federal status, cannabis studies are pretty limited, but there are more compounds in cannabis, many thought

creativity. Indicas usually create a sedated effect that’s very relaxing, great for being mellow. (Though these labels can be a handy guideline, most strains are actually hybrids.)

For example, CBD is celebrated for it’s anxiety-squashing effects and THCa helps promote a healthy nervous system. You don’t have to get high. THC is actually one of the only cannabinoids that has a psychoactive effect. Most cannabinoids are non-psychoactive, like the aforementioned CBD and THCa. Microdosing is also an increasingly popular way to benefit from cannabis without intoxication; sometimes a lower dose of cannabinoids is actually more helpful than a higher dose, like in the case of THC and anxiety.

But how cannabis makes you feel isn’t that simple. There’s other

If you could feel better in any capacity, it’s worth seeing if cannabis is the medicine for the job. It’s safe, effective, legal, and good for Southeast economies – why not?

Kale Salad with Fresh Blue Cheese Dressing INGREDIENTS: 1 bunch of lacinato or dinosaur kale from your local market 1 small red onion ½ of a red bell pepper ¼ cup of toasted sunflower seeds or toasted sliced almonds

½ cup of golden raisins or canned pears ½ cup of fresh Blue Cheese Dressing 1 Clove minced garlic 2 tsp scallions minced (green onions) ¼ tsp Dijon Mustard 1 oz of Red wine vinegar ¼ tsp Worcestershire or coconut aminos ½ cup of Sour Cream 1 and ½ Cup of Mayonnaise ¼ cup of Buttermilk 4 oz of Blue Cheese (crumbled) White Pepper and Salt to Taste In a bowl whisk together the garlic, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and vinegar.

Dinosaur kale, also known as lacinato or Tuscan kale, is more tender than curly and red kale, making it a good candidate for raw and shortly cooked dishes. It is high in beta carotene, almost five times higher than curly kale (think the crap they used to put around salad bars in the ’80s) and tons of vitamin K, vitamin C, B6 manganese, copper, calcium and magnesium as well as high in fiber. This variety of kale contains tons of phytochemicals like glucosinolates, enzymes that are released when crushed or chopped or eaten. It’s great to wash well, shred or cut and then massage with a little olive oil and sea salt in your hands to release its full nutrition potential. It’s also easier to digest. I’ve dug lacinato kale out of my snow bank in Juneau buried in two

feet of snow which was still happily growing away. It is great in containers and should be in everyone’s garden for year-round nutrition. Highly nutrient dense foods always need to be eaten with fats and oils so this pairs well with blue cheese dressing and the fruits and nuts to round out the texture and flavor. Making blue cheese dressing from scratch is very simple and recent studies found that this variety of cheese actually has anti-inflammatory properties, and gut microbe and skin benefits, especially the longer aged varieties, so eat like t h e French for ultimate health, add a glass of rose or semillion to this dish and find the long summer nights to your delight.

Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk and whisk the dressing until it is combined well. Fold in the blue cheese and green onions, season to taste and chill the dressing. The dressing keeps covered in the fridge for 2 weeks. Wash the Kale, dry with paper towels, slice thinly add a dash of olive oil and sea salt and massage for 3 minutes. Thinly slice the red onion and submerge in a bowl of cold water for 5 minutes. In a large serving bowl, add the thinly sliced kale and red pepper (also thinly sliced), pepper, sunflower seeds or almonds, raisins or pears. Drained red onion and add ½ cup of the Blue Cheese Dressing and toss until well coated with dressing. From our heart healthy summer salad table to your’s -Amber
