n this remodel we were presented with blending the modern cleanlined style of one homeowner with the rustic natural style of the other. Another wish was to bring in a fireplace and address the need for additional lighting in the living room space. We started with the fireplace as the focal point and extended a bold soffit off both sides of it to allow us to install wall

washing light down onto cabinetry while a upward track system washed the wall above, highlighting the fir ceiling. This same soffit was pulled into the kitchen for consistency and to achieve the same lighting goals. A natural stone tile was installed throughout the floor to provide a textural and color contrast against all of the wood found in the space. We selected a granite countertop to bring in a reflective element into the kitchen. The granite also provided a durable, low upkeep, beautiful addition to the material pallet.

The cabinetry was built by Showplace Wood Products in natural cherry. Brushed nickle hardware, lighting, and faucet were selected to satisfy the mod-

Welcome to Spuhn Island

Contributed by Holly Cerne

J

ust off the coast of Auke Bay, Southeast Alaska’s Spuhn Island has a long and vibrant history. It was first homesteaded in the early 1900‘s by a gentleman named Mr. Dahl, who journeyed to Alaska seeking adventure and fortune. At the end of his life, Dahl sold his island to Gene and Marie Weschenfelder. The Weschenfelders stepped off the steamer and onto the shores of Juneau in the Spring of 1913. The beauty and bounty of the Last Frontier captured their hearts... and they stayed. After many years running the local grocery and meat market in the town of Treadwell, Weschenfelder heard rumor of Spuhn Island, and was intent on owning it. After contacting Mr. Dahl and spending much time learning about the all the wonderful possibilities for the homestead, they bought the island and began their adventure. The Weschenfelders and their son Ernest moved to Spuhn Island and made themselves at home. They set up a small farm and made a living raising silver fox on the island. At the time they got a handsome payment of $150 a pelt! There are still remnants of the old shed and fox pens that sustained

Today, Spuhn Island is owned by a local family and their vision for the island is not too different from that of the Weschenfelders; to provide a place for families to live surrounded by all the beauty of Southeast Alaska, yet with all the comforts of home.

After purchasing the island in 2004, Spuhn Island was subdivided into 38 parcels varying in size from 1.3 to 3.4 acres. Each lot includes a minimum of 200 feet of waterfront and provides

May 2012: Shoot, score, soccer! Whitehorse adult international soccer invitational

Soccer Festivities Photos by Anna Hoke The end of April and the month of May was certainly filled with a lot of soccer. April ended with an adult international soccer invitational. This event was held in Whitehorse, British Columbia over the weekend of April 27, 2012. Each team involved in the tournament played a total of five games in the Canada Games Centre. Two teams traveled from Juneau, Alaska. One Juneau team played in the men’s over 35 division, and the other in the coed division. All other teams resided in Whitehorse. On Tuesday, May 15 the JuneauDouglas and Thunder Mountain high school girls’ and boys’ soccer teams hosted several Cancer Awareness games. El Sombrero served dinner, and a bake sale was also included in the event. The Bears and Falcons programs provided cancer information, collected donations to start a fund to assist youths in the Juneau School District that have recently been diagnosed with cancer. They sold purple awareness t-shirts and wore purple attire during the matches in support of cancer awareness. On May 20 the Annual 7-A-Side Soccer Tournament took place in Juneau, Alaska at the Thunder Mountain High School Turf field. This event is organized by Capital City Soccer League, who donated 100% of this year’s 7-A-Side tournament proceeds to Dorothy Brent, a JDHS senior who has grown up playing soccer in Juneau. Brent is currently spending her final high school soccer season undergoing chemotherapy in Seattle.

Siding and Exterior Wall Components E

xterior walls of a home are its barriers to the outside world. Exterior walls are what keep us warm and dry. In today’s wall strucBy Greg Stopher tures there are Stopher Construction many components that help to keep the weather out. Let’s take a look at all the different materials that can make up an exterior wall from the wall sheathing all the way to the siding.

Building Papers and Air Barriers There are many building papers and air barriers on the market. These papers are applied directly to the exterior wall sheathing under any exterior wall siding that may be applied. This building paper is the number one de-

fense against the weather. It is what keeps the wall structures dry. This paper acts as an air/weather barrier and allows the walls to breath. The most common building paper and the one that has been around the longest is tarpaper, which is a tar impregnated felt paper. Tarpaper is waterproof and a wind and air barrier but cannot be left exposed to the weather because it is susceptible to wind and UV damage. Other very common air and weather barriers are Tyvek and Typar building paper. Both are made from a highdensity polyethylene. This family of building papers allows water vapor from inside the building to escape while eliminating exterior moisture and air infiltration from the exterior. It also cannot be left exposed to the weather because it is susceptible to UV damage. With hundreds of building papers and house wraps on the market today, the key is to find

RESIDENTIAL ENDORSEMENT #1949 CONTRAC TOR LICENSE #35624

one that will keep the weather out of the interior structure of the wall.

Flashing Detail Another key to keeping the moisture out of the structure is good flashing detail. Flashing directs any moisture that has made it through the building components on the exterior of the building back to the exterior of the structure. Most flashing details are above windows and at other wall and roof intersections.

Insulating the Exterior of a Home In current practice it is common to add rigid insulation directly to the building paper and sheathing. There are some other variations to the insulation, such as spray-on foam, or a total rigid foam exterior insulation. I see exterior (and interior) sprayon foam as the future of insulation in the building industry. Spray-on foam leaves no voids and completely air seals all in one application. One of the benefits to exterior applied insulation is that the dew point of the water vapor on the interior of the building falls within the foam and nowhere near the organic components of the building structure. This is important because it helps to keep the wall cavity dry.

Rain screen siding is any siding applied on furring strips to allow drainage behind the siding. Since most exterior siding is not impervious to moisture and wind driven rain, a drainage plane behind the siding is necessary. This allows the siding to dry and allows any moisture driven through the siding to drain out the bottom and not into the wall cavity. The building papers can then perform the way they are supposed to and keep moisture out. Insulation is fastened to the structure with the ½” x 3” pressure treated furring strips (see “rain screen siding”), again, fastening all the way into the studs in the wall cavity. When fastening 2” of rigid foam to the structure a minimum 5” screw must be used. A 5” screw will be driven through ½” of furring strip, 2” of rigid foam, ½”

of sheathing, plus 2” of fastening to the studs. The siding can then be applied to the furring strips and again this creates the needed drainage behind the siding. I have also read that a cavity behind the siding can lessen the pressures directed on a building from the wind, thus creating a tighter more efficient home. When siding is applied directly to the building paper or the insulation, it will sandwich the moisture between the siding and building paper or insulation causing it to hold moisture and not properly drain. Pressure treated furring strips ½ inch thick by 3” wide are applied to the insulation and fastened into the interior studs. The furring strips are also installed around windows and doors and flashed with an ice and water shield. Insect screens are applied to keep critters out of the 1/2” air cavity behind the siding at the top and bottom of each wall. Siding is then applied to the furring strips.

Siding Some of the most common sidings today are vinyl, cedar shingles, cedar lap siding, cement board, stone, stucco, brick, T-1-11, and steel sidings. Steel probably creates the most weather or moisture resistance of the sidings and come in a wide variety of colors. The steel channels naturally create a drainage plane and allow the structure behind it to dry. Most vinyl siding, like steel, can be applied directly on the building paper or insulation. The weep holes in vinyl allow moisture to drain from behind the siding. Vinyl siding also comes in a variety of colors and textures and is also very durable. All other types of siding do not serve as weather or moisture barriers therefore I highly recommended they be applied on furring strips to create the rain screen siding. Brick, stucco, and stone have been applied to structures throughout the years with weep holes to allow proper drainage of moisture. Brick, stucco, and stone are very durable and also come in a variety of colors and textures. Cedar siding and cement board siding commonly come in lap siding or in a shingle variety. Both come in a variety of colors

“In today’s wall structures there are many components that help to keep the weather out.” and are very durable when applied on rain screen.

projects. He can be reached at 907321-2350.

Using variations of different siding textures on a structure can create a very aesthetically pleasing home. By using the right exterior components and flashing details on the exterior of your home, you can create a very durable structure. Greg Stopher has over 16 years of experience in the construction field and earned a degree in Construction Technologies from the University of Alaska – Southeast. Things to Give Up to be Happy For Southeasterners Lately I’ve read several articles circulating online about what to give up in order to be happy. In general these articles suggest we give up non-material items such as “blame” and “jealousy.” I agree that this is probably a good idea, although not one easily accomplished. I don’t want to imply that we here in Southeast Alaska are unhappy, but I think there are special things that we, as Southeast residents, must give up in order to be truly happy.

Give up the idea that you are going to be able to pop into the store without seeing anyone you know

to Fred Meyers without bothering to check on your appearance, thinking, no one will be there this time of day or night. But this line of thinking has never served me well. It is not possible to just run in and out of anywhere here in Juneau and I can only imagine that it’s worse in the smaller communities. Nothing puts a damper on a good icecream run like bumping into a classmate who you haven’t seen in 5 years when your hair looks as though you haven’t brushed it for approximately the same time frame. Unless you are thrilled to run into your spouse’s boss while wearing dirty sweat pants and your awesome Twilight t-shirt, it’s time to give up on the anonymous trip to any public area in Juneau, for your own happiness.

It is very tempting to make a dash

Give up on having a

perfect lawn As a kid growing up in Juneau all I wanted was a broad, flat lawn where we could play soccer. However, as we know from several dirt fields and three turf fields here in Juneau, grass doesn’t grow well in Juneau, and if you can get it to grow, playing soccer is the best way to kill it. My mother eventually planted clover in her front yard just to get something that would take hold and come back after the snow melt. The other issue is that most Juneau yards aren’t perfectly flat. Yards that have embraced the elements and feature a lot of decorative rocks seem to do best in this town. I love the smell of fresh cut grass, I love the feel of grass on bare feet, but I have given up on a perfect lawn for my own happiness. Rocks never need to be fertilized; I celebrate that!

By Hannah Lindoff

Give up on planning an outdoor party Go ahead and have an outdoor party if you want, but just don’t try to plan it more than five hours in advance. Nice days in Southeast certainly deserve a celebration, but if you are hosting a birthday party or getting married, save yourself the heartache and plan for rain. After a really beautiful week of sunshine, the day my husband and I got married big, fat, ugly rain clouds rolled in over the channel and menaced all my plans. While we avoided getting rained on by about 15 minutes, it wasn’t warm. The happy moment after we were wed my husband’s family wrapped us in a large, wool button blanket and my sister grumped, “That’s not fair.” There is

“Unless you are thrilled to run into your spouse’s boss while wearing dirty sweat pants and your awesome Twilight t-shirt, it’s time to give up on the anonymous trip to any public area in Juneau, for your own happiness.” not a single date that is truly, 100% safe for an outdoor party so for your own happiness, have impromptu BBQs in the sun but don’t plan a big event in a strictly outdoor setting.

Give up on wearing dressy clothing You can wear expensive clothing here in Southeast, i n fact, my ideal outdoor gear wardrobe would set me back quite a bit, but there is really no point in investing in dressy clothing. Yes every now and then there is a wedding to attend but even then really dressy clothing isn’t necessary and can look out of place. Next time you are trying to rationalize something frilly or fancy please recall that the Governor wore Xtra Tufs to his inaugural ball. Yes, the theme was

“Tuxedos to Xtra Tufs” but in addition to the sea of rubber boots on the dance floor that night, I saw a lot of women in old prom dresses and plenty of men sporting khaki. I myself squeezed into the dress my sister nearly froze in at my wedding. I’m tried of looking at the nice clothes in my closet and wishing I had an opportunity to wear them so from now on, for my own happiness, I will skip the dress racks and get a snazzy rain coat instead.

Give up weather envy As the rain poured down this May it was difficult not to scan the forecasts online, hoping to find a break in the drizzle predicted within my lifetime. But the trouble starts when looking at the

weather in other towns. Taking a peak at Seattle, Honolulu, even Anchorage can be tempting, but it never adds happiness to your life. You are not there and knowing the weather isn’t going to get you to Waikiki Beach. Next time I see a friend from out of town posting about their sun burn on facebook, I will do my best to rid myself of all weather envy. After all, wishing to be elsewhere can’t help you when the weather’s bad. It’s much better to think of other things we don’t have, like tornados, big snakes or ticks. In fact, the more I think about a walk in the woods, with just a little drizzle and not one scorpion, the happier I am. Rhubarb Sorbet Recipe Contributed by Amber King

Ingredients

3 1/2 cups of chopped fresh rhubarb (4-5 stalks) 2 1/2 cups of water 1 2/3 cups of sugar 1/4 teaspoon of salt 2 teaspoons of orange zest 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh ginger 2 tablespoons of dark agave nectar

Method

1. 2.

Place rhubarb, sugar, water, salt, orange zest, and ginger in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for a few minutes, or until the rhubarb easily falls apart and the sugar has dissolved.

Cool for 10 minutes. Working in batches if needed, purée in a blender until smooth. Press through a fine mesh strainer to remove the pulp; discard the pulp (or save and freeze to add fiber to smoothies). Stir in agave nectar. Cover and refrigerate until completely chilled, several hours or overnight. (Can more quickly chill in the freezer if you check it and stir it every 15 minutes.)

3.

Process in your ice cream maker according to the instructions. If you do not have an ice cream maker and you have a bit of time you can place in the freezer and every 20 minutes or so mix by hand, it’ won’t be as smooth as a machine but works for a more rustic sorbet. I prefer to use a hand crank version I found at the local thrift store or my Kitchen Aid. If using a machine the sorbet will have a soft texture right out of the ice cream maker. If you would like a firmer consistency, transfer the sorbet to an airtight container and place in freezer for several hours. Once frozen, you may need to let it sit for a few minutes at room temperature to soften before serving. (Side Tip: If you have a Vitamix you can make a quick version by adding in 1 ½ cup of ice to your chilled sauce and there is no need to strain and blend to speed 7 until thoroughly incorporated, you will hear the sound of the machine change as four mounds form. Stop the machine as soon as this happens or the friction heat of the blades will melt the sorbet too much.. Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container. Makes about one quart.

I

t’s that time of year when our favorite Southeast Alaskan garden starts to produce its first crops of ruby red rhubarb. I love most things rhubarb, from rhubarb/strawberry pie or rhubarb crumble to rhubarb garlic sauce over halibut but my favorite and most refreshing summer treat is a simple sorbet, it’s light, clean and refreshing to the pallet and perfect for a summer treat.

I’m hopeful this year as my starts were slug free this spring and the crowns are looking very healthy and will be thinning soon. Always harvest the reddest stalks first to allow for further ripening of younger stalks. Make sure to throw away the leaves, all parts of rhubarb except the stalk is poisonous with oxalic acid. Also if your rhubarb crowns have been around for a while it might be a good time to thin them. This can be done by digging around the crown .com

and dividing the crown in into sections (for replanting, giving or barter within your community) It’s best to keep a bit of native soil with the clump to avoid shock and ease new growth. Also make sure to pinch of any flowers that might start as you want to avoid the flowering seed production cycle of the plant life (like most herbs) since flowering takes most of the plant’s energy and we want the energy focused on leaves. Don’t forget the kids too, to make popsicles

you can also pour the mixture into molds and freeze. Amber King, chef, mom, Slow Food SE member and usually found near children & cooking, I like growing foods and inspiration. Amber King can be followed on Twitter at akamber or emailed at accereek@ gmail.com
